We are in rural Yunnan, home to China’s last matrilineal society. Here, women are at the heart of family life, running the household and preserving family traditions across generations.
Among the Mosuo people, families live together under one roof, and the concept of conventional marriage does not exist. Instead, children are raised within their mother’s family, while fathers traditionally live separately and play a different role in family life. In some cases, children may not even know who their biological father is until later in life.
The Mosuo are a unique ethnic group living in the mountains of Yunnan and Sichuan, where centuries-old traditions continue to shape daily life in ways rarely seen elsewhere in the world.

    I have heard about the Mosou people before. Their culture and family structure are very interesting, especially in a modern world where people don't marry anymore, don't have kids anymore, and many are trapped in a cycle of loneliness and depression.

    In Meghalaya in the NE of India there's a well developed prosperous matrilineal tribe called the Khasis. They have exactly the same life style but modern influences are changing them.

Loved the traditional wardrobe of the Mosuo people, the woman wearing beautiful color clothing and head ornaments. Traveling on your motorbike seems like the perfect weather. The people of Ligiaju; not interested in marriage sounds strange, but they are happy and live harmoniously "all for one, and one for all" they all help each other and survive quite at peace. Amazing.     Yes, in the past, men weren’t so pridefully dominant and society in general was geared toward the protection of children and community. It doesn’t matter who’s the father of the child. The mother matters more than anything else. These people have got it all figured out. Look what patriarchy has done to the world. It kills men, women, and children. Boys and girls. Sex trafficking. Child marriage. Girls being denied education. Unequal pay . Lack of choice. The subjugation of women worldwide based on various religious or philosophical beliefs that at their core, are patriarchal. I encourage you to do some research about what societies create peace and what create war.

    In fact, the uncle will always know that the children of his sisters are of his genetic lineage, even if they are not directly descended from him. In patrilineal societies, especially very patriarchal ones, the husband could never know 100% that his wife's children were his offspring unless he very strictly controlled the lives of his wife/wives, basically making sure they could not interact freely with people from outside the home. This is still the case in many societies in the world. But the uncles will have a very strong family bond with his sisters and nieces and nephews, and there's no need to control or restrict the lives of the women since they are the foundation of the family and can choose freely who they want to have children with. The women will be confident and have high status, and the men will still feel important to their families. The children will grow up in a very stable home.

    Very strange culture without biological fathers raising children. So are they still monogamous? It's awkward because you are not upfront with them about questions. If you tell them you are interested in understanding their culture, they will share more.

    I first read about the Mosuo a few years ago but have never been to visit Lake Lugo on any of my China trips. I didn't realise it's so close to Lijiang so will definitely go there. Next time! Thank you for a wonderfully informative video. I really enjoy your documentaries on China.
