土手町通（どてまちどおり）
土手町通は、京都市上京区・中京区・下京区にかけて南北にある通り。
名前の由来は、かつて豊臣秀吉が天正19（1591）年に京都を囲むように作った御土居が、
都市の発達により街の規模が大きくなり御土居が担っていた堤防の機能も、
寛文10（1670）年に新たに作られた堤防（寛文新堤）によって不要となり、
宝永5（1708）年に御土居は撤去された。
その撤去された跡に出来たのがこの土手町通となる。
かつて通り沿いには公卿屋敷があったが、現在は旅館や住宅地が立ち並んでいる。

Dotemachi-dori Street
Dotemachi-dori is a street running north to south through Kamigyo, Nakagyo, and Shimagyo Wards in Kyoto.
The street’s name originates from the “Odoi,” an earthen fortification built around Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1591. As the city expanded, a new embankment (Kanbun Shintei) was constructed in 1670, making the Odoi’s flood-protection function obsolete. Consequently, the Odoi was removed in 1708, and Dotemachi-dori Street was established along the former site of the wall. Although court nobles’ mansions once lined the street, it is now occupied by traditional Japanese inns (ryokan) and residential areas.
