I Couldn’t Believe This Existed in Venezuela – EP.439

Colonia Tovar is such a surreal place. It’s called the “Germany of the Caribbean.” One moment you’re riding through Venezuelan landscapes and the next, you’re in Bavaria. Check out why it all happened!

In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don’t know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Throughout my journey, I’m raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family lead as normal a life as possible so please donate generously: https://gogetfunding.com/arewethereyet/

None of that would be possible without my official sponsors:

  1. Very good video. I just wanted to point out that the Colonia Tovar is not located in the Andes Mountains. The Andes Mountains ends in Lara State (near its capital, Barquisimeto). The mountain range located in the north part of the country is known as the Coastal Range. It covers parts of several states and is divided into two sections: central and eastern. As you noticed, its elevation is lower than that of the Andes. The highest point in the Andes within Venezuela is Pico Bolívar at 4,978 meters, while the highest point in the Coastal Range is Pico Naiguatá at only 2,765 meters.

  2. The following was said by a journalist from the german network DW
"The germans in Venezuela aren't nazis who fled europe; those are in argentina and chile"

    I was like 🫴
    My Goodness 🤭🤭🤭

  3. X. Humanidad los, VENEZOLANOS. Le. Cedieron. Un. Terreno. X. Q ellos. Venían. Huyendo. De LA. Guerra en. Su. Pais. Y. Como el. Venezolano A,,sido. Siempre ,solidario con. Otras. Nacionalidades no Como USTED dice. Q lo. rechazaban LEA. BIEN. LA. HISTORIA PARA Q. HABLE. CON. LA,,REALIDAD

  4. It's so strange, you seem to never have time even what you are doing is riding a bike. I couldnt do that, the point of this type of adventure is to make your own time, else you'll miss a lot. That first restaurant in the top of the mountain past the military checkpoint had the best view of the city, yet you just cruised by, just saying. If you want to stay, stay, you won't get this change again, and a night spent at Colonia Tovar, eating strawberry and cream, german beer, best bbq, all kinds of fruit, blackberrys, blueberrys, etc it's a unique magical experience. Cheers.

  5. I used to visit often the Colonia Tovar when living in Venezuela. Love the german food. Thanks for sharing. Dios te bendiga 🙏

  7. Colonia Tovar was a project of the italian cartographer, war criminal and pedophile Agustin Codazzi. He convinced president Carlos Soublette, himself a war criminal, to give him funds to chart a boat, go to germany, find the most impoverished and wretched peoples he could find, ideally orphans, widows and war refugees from the napoleonic wars, and sweet talk them into immigrating into a tropical paradise, all expenses paid by the government of Venezuela. He promised them that there would be a town ready for them, but all he could manage was to build a dirt road from La Victoria and a single shed with some vital supplies, basically grain and wood working tools. For the first two years, the colony lived from the scarce grain that Codazzi could send them in mule packs from La Victoria. All paid by the government of Venezuela. About half of the settlers escaped to Caracas and were helped by the small local german community. After two years of support, the settlement began earning money from agriculture and stabilized. Why do i call Codazzi a pedo? Because he writes in his letters to Soublette about how he kept a few girls for himself.
The whole project was lunacy and served nothing to no one. A waste of money and lives. It was just a chance for Codazzi to score some orphans.
You can read the original documents here, mostly are decrees by the government of Venezuela in the 1840s and also the letters of Agustin Codazzi

The government of Venezuela would continue to do such silly "whitening" population replacement projects roughly until the 1970s, trying to attract european migrants with offers of land, cash and quick granting of the nationality, such as the Turen Colony, the cacao plantations of Sucre, given to corsicans, and discrete land grants south of Maracaibo lake.

  9. I have been there, they speak an old german language. I forgot the name of this old german language. And no, they didn't walk 100 miles to get there. They were brought from Germany by an ex-venezuelan president in the 1800s, I think they were 300 settlers, including kids. And thanks for your beautiful video !!

  10. It's very interesting. A piece of Germany inserted in South America. Thank you for showing such beautiful town, not to mention the gorgeous landscape.

Bienvenida!!! 🇻🇪

  12. Hi! The landscapes are beautiful, but your information is way off. You aren't in the Andes Mountains; you're in the Coastal Range. Also, they weren't abandoned on the coast; they arrived sick and had to quarantine. They were part of an agreement that fell through later on (that part is true), but it happened once they arrived at that specific location, which was designated and donated for their stay. Anyway, you should do a bit more research to get your facts straight, but thanks for promoting our town. Welcome!!! 🇻🇪"

  13. I find it so low of Venezuelans to be proud of European immigrants but all other immigrants from Latin American countries they would complain about.

  15. Hi, I'm so happy that you're having a great time in Venezuela. Hope you enjoy your visit and have a great time. There is one thing, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I heard you say that you thought you were in the Andes, in the Colonia Tovar area? This is not the case; the Andes begin in the state of Trujillo, extend only through the states of Mérida and Tachira, and continue into Colombia.

  17. That is the story we were told since I was a child living in Caracas. Not completely true. Venezuelans were aware of the German immigrants from the beggining and even helped them and trading with them. How else would they have been able to build such a wonderful village. The Germans chose to stay isolated because of their beliefs and heritage. It is a facinating story that is worth anybody to do more research about Colonial Tovar.

  18. 8:41 you asked him: do you speak German ? and he replied: Yes.

Then, you start speaking to him in English , looool.

Nice video, I miss my country so your video makes me feel really pleasant

  19. That's not quite the correct story. The migration of the 400 German settlers was a planned affair, lead by Coronel Agustin Codazzi. The lands were donated by Manuel Felipe de Tovar (former Venezuelan president) and his uncle Martin Tovar who the was guarantor of the affair (Hence the name, Colonia Tovar). They were "stuck" in Choroni for a few days because they had a chickenpox outbreak in the boat and were instructed to be quarantined, but were released early after Codazzi pleaded to the authorities by claiming that the Germans, unaccustomed to the hot Choroni weather and after such a long trip, would probably die if they remained there much longer.
