Fukuoka(福岡) is a major city in Japan’s Kyushu(九州) region, blending modern urban life with traditional culture. Known as a gateway to Asia, Fukuoka boasts convenient transportation and numerous attractions, making it an ideal starting point to explore Kyushu. The Tenjin(天神) and Hakata(博多) districts are the city’s main commercial and entertainment centers, filled with shopping malls, restaurants, and yatai (屋台) food stalls, where visitors can enjoy local Kyushu delicacies like tonkotsu ramen and mentaiko.

Nearby Dazaifu(太宰府) is a historically rich area home to the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine(太宰府天満宮), dedicated to the deity of learning. It draws numerous students and visitors each year to pray for academic success. In spring, Dazaifu becomes a beautiful spot for viewing plum blossoms.

Yanagawa(柳川) is a scenic town known for its canals. The popular “kawakudari” (川下り) boat rides allow visitors to glide through historic canals, enjoying traditional architecture and seasonal landscapes, especially captivating during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Yanagawa is also famous for its eel dishes, and visitors should try the local grilled eel rice.

Kitakyushu(北九州), Kyushu’s industrial hub, offers a unique mix of modern and historical architecture. Mojiko Retro(門司港) is a highlight, showcasing beautifully preserved historical buildings that reflect Japan’s adoption of Western architectural styles during the Meiji and Taisho periods. With its charming museums, restaurants, and scenic spots, it’s perfect for strolling and photography.
