Driving on Beijing’s Most Beautiful Winding Mountain Road – Xiongnan Road | 4K

Today we’re driving along Xiongnan Road in Pinggu District, Beijing — this road was named one of Beijing’s “Most Beautiful Rural Roads” in 2024. It is China’s first international-standard hiking trail, and also a widely recognized golden route for self-driving and cycling in the suburbs of Beijing.

Our self-driving journey officially starts from Beizhai Village, Nandulehe Town, Pinggu District, Beijing. Known as “China’s No.1 Red Apricot Village”, it has a history of over 600 years of red apricot cultivation. With more than 10,000 mu of red apricot orchards, it is the largest red apricot production base in North China. Every spring, apricot blossoms blanket the mountainsides, forming a sea of pink and white flowers; in summer, the branches are heavy with ripe red apricots, and the sweet and tangy Beizhai red apricot has long been an iconic specialty of Pinggu. Nestled at the foot of the mountain, the village features clean, tidy roads and well-arranged houses, making it the most peaceful starting point of this cloud-kissed mountain road.

The entire route stretches 26.4 kilometers northward to Xiong’erzhai Township, taking about 50 minutes at a normal driving pace, with an elevation ranging from 200 to 730 meters. The whole road is a smooth two-lane asphalt road with flowing curves and unobstructed sightlines, no tricky terrain, and is perfectly suited for family cars, motorcycles and cycling. Filmed in the early morning, with blue sky, white clouds and mist winding around the mountain peaks, the road winds through the green mountains like a jade ribbon.

The first 8 kilometers lead out of Beizhai Village, with the road climbing gently along the river valley, flanked by endless acres of apricot and peach orchards. The early morning sunlight filters through the thin mist, casting light on the tender green leaves, and the air is filled with the fresh fragrance of grass and trees. Distant mountain peaks are half-hidden by milky white mist, looming in and out of view like a flowing ink wash painting. There are very few cars along the way, only the sound of birds chirping and wind blowing, allowing you to instantly escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

The middle 12 kilometers is the essence of the entire route, and also the most enjoyable section for driving and cycling on Xiongnan Road. The road winds and twists through the mountains with more than 40 curves of various sizes, climbing all the way up to the foot of Silou Mountain at an altitude of over 700 meters. As the altitude rises, the mist becomes thicker, flowing slowly between the valleys — sometimes wrapping around the mountainside, sometimes drifting across the road, making you feel as if you’re driving above the clouds. Along the way, we occasionally encounter one or two lone cyclists, pedaling forward among the green mountains, becoming a quiet, lovely sight on this mountain road. Both sides are covered with dense natural secondary forests with a vegetation coverage rate of over 85%. Dark green pines and cypresses interweave with light green shrubs, looking exceptionally fresh against the blue sky and white clouds.

The final 6.4 kilometers descend gently from the mountain top, passing by Huayu Reservoir. The lake surface is as calm as a mirror in the early morning, perfectly reflecting the blue sky, white clouds and mist-shrouded mountain peaks, where water and sky blend seamlessly like a fairyland. Continuing forward, the road gradually flattens out, with rolling mountains and open valleys on both sides offering panoramic views. We finally arrive at our destination, Xiong’erzhai Township, This enjoyable 26.4-kilometer Beijing mountain drive comes to a perfect close.
