海を越えたハーレー。
2011年、東日本大震災の津波により流された1台のハーレー・ダビッドソン。
それは約6,400kmもの太平洋を1年以上かけて漂流し、カナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州の海岸に打ち上げられました。

持ち主は奇跡的に特定されましたが、「自分の代わりに世界中の人に伝えてほしい」との願いから、バイクはそのままアメリカ・ミルウォーキーのハーレー・ダビッドソン博物館へ。

展示には、心を込めて南大阪のハーレーディーラーが捧げた千羽鶴も添えられています。
失われたもの、繋がった想い、そして走り続ける記憶——
それは、ただの鉄の塊じゃない。

2011年3月11日、東日本大震災の津波によって、宮城県の横山育生さんの愛車ハーレーダビッドソン「ナイトトレイン」は、自宅ごと津波に飲み込まれ、バイクも収納コンテナごと流されてしまいました。

その後、バイクはなんと**約1年1カ月（2011年3月～2012年4月）**もの間、コンテナのまま太平洋を漂流。日本から約6,400km離れたカナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州グレアム島（ハイダグアイ諸島）に2012年4月18日、打ち上げられているのを地元の方が発見しました。発見時、コンテナのドアは外れてバイクのタイヤが飛び出しており、錆びついてはいたものの、ナンバープレートが判読できたため、現地メディアや日本の領事館、ハーレーダビッドソン社などが連携し、最終的に持ち主が横山さんであることが判明しました。

ハーレーダビッドソン社はバイクを修理して横山さんに返却する意向を示しましたが、横山さんは「私だけが特別な扱いを受けることはできません。津波で多くの方が大切なものを失った。ぜひこのバイクを現状のまま、津波の記憶として博物館で展示してほしい」と希望。その願いが受け入れられ、バイクは2012年10月からアメリカ・ミルウォーキーのハーレーダビッドソン博物館で展示されています。

展示には、南大阪のハーレーディーラーが捧げた千羽鶴も添えられ、失われたものと人の想い、そして震災の記憶を伝え続けています。

この“TSUNAMIハーレー”は、コンテナごと1年以上かけて太平洋を横断した奇跡のバイクとして、今も多くの人に感動を与えています

On March 11, 2011, the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck the Tohoku region. Among the countless losses was a Harley-Davidson “Night Train” owned by Mr. Ikuei Yokoyama from Miyagi Prefecture. The powerful tsunami swept away his home, and his beloved motorcycle was carried off inside a storage container.

Amazingly, the Harley remained inside the container and drifted across the Pacific Ocean for over a year—about 13 months and a distance of roughly 6,400 km (4,000 miles). On April 18, 2012, the container washed ashore on Graham Island in British Columbia, Canada. When discovered, the container’s door had come off and the bike’s tires were sticking out. Although the motorcycle was heavily rusted, the license plate was still legible.

Thanks to cooperation between local Canadians, the Japanese consulate, and Harley-Davidson, the owner was miraculously identified as Mr. Yokoyama. Harley-Davidson offered to restore and return the bike to him, but Mr. Yokoyama declined, saying, “So many people lost precious things in the tsunami. I can’t be the only one to receive special treatment. Please display the bike as it is, so people around the world can remember what happened.”

Honoring his wish, the motorcycle—now known as the “Tsunami Harley”—has been on display at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, USA, since October 2012. The exhibit also features a thousand origami cranes (senbazuru) sent by a Harley dealer from South Osaka as a symbol of hope and remembrance.

This remarkable story of a Harley-Davidson crossing the ocean in a container for over a year stands as a powerful symbol of loss, connection, and resilience, touching the hearts of people around the world.
