The Route de Guillaumes (D2202) is a highly scenic and often dramatic departmental road located in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France. It serves as a vital artery connecting the region’s coastal areas with the rugged high valleys, particularly linking the Var Valley with the village of Guillaumes and the upper Cians and Vésubie Valleys. The route is famous for passing directly through the awe-inspiring Gorges de Daluis, often nicknamed the “French Colorado” due to its spectacular red schists and deep canyon walls carved by the River Var. While navigating the narrow, winding mountain passage, drivers traverse numerous tunnels and galleries carved into the cliff faces, offering breathtaking views of the river far below. Beyond the gorges, the road provides access to the western edge of the Mercantour National Park and serves as a gateway to high-mountain passes like the Col de la Cayolle and the Col de Valberg, making it a popular route for touring and cycling enthusiasts.
