I’m just saying a quick hello, because we’re about to get started.
We’re beginning with a single Class 101 locomotive in Elmshorn I’m just saying a quick hello, because we’re about to get started.
We’re beginning with a single Class 101 locomotive in Elmshorn and are on our way from Itzehoe to Hamburg-Langenfelde
to park the locomotive overnight at the depot there. But before I forget in the rush,
here’s the overview map for you: Class 101; Adtranz, Bombardier Transportation; Year of manufacture: 1998;
Power: 6400 kW; Starting tractive effort: 300 kN. At Elmshorn station, the Marsh Railway from Sylt and Itzehoe
meets the railway lines from Kiel and Flensburg. Five regional and one private railway line stop in the town of 50,000 inhabitants,
which lies about 30 kilometers northwest of the metropolis of Hamburg. With approximately 18,000 passengers daily, Elmshorn is the
third largest station in Schleswig-Holstein after Lübeck and Kiel. Up to the exit signal, I may travel at a maximum speed of
40 km/h and, after passing the signal, accelerate to 80 km/h. At the end of the subsequent set of points, I may accelerate
to the maximum speed of 140 km/h indicated in the timetable. Lf 7 – Speed signal;
the indicated speed must not be
exceeded from the signal onwards. The locomotive pulled an InterCity train to Westerland on Sylt
as far as Itzehoe, where it was replaced by a diesel locomotive. Since there are no more trains from the island in the evening,
I’m bringing the locomotive back to Hamburg without a train. The level crossings along the line
have interesting names, so I’ll include them above. Some of them are from former block signals
that were still in operation until the 1990s. Lf 1 – Invalid Signals;
If signal Lf 1 (…) is marked as invalid, signals Lf 2
and Lf 3 are either not displayed or are obscured. The train driver is notified in writing of temporary speed
restrictions via an operational document (the La), which also specifies the start and end dates
of the speed restriction. If the reason for the speed restriction ceases
to exist before the stated validity period expires, the signals must not simply be removed. Instead,
the Lf 1 signal before the speed restriction is crossed out. This is the only way for the train driver to be certain that
the La signals have not been accidentally removed, because even without any signaling along the track, the driver
would have to brake to the speed indicated in the La signal. Tornesch was originally a junction station, as a railway line
branched off here to Uetersen, four kilometers away. The town of Tornesch only came into being after the construction of the railway line,
which was commissioned by the Danish King Christian VIII in 1842. Following the construction of the railway and station,
factories were established, attracting a large number of workers. South of Tornesch runs a high-voltage power line,
whose pylons are painted bright red. They are located near the Tornesch-Ahrenlohe airfield
and are thus more easily visible to pilots. To be more aware of my new videos, you can subscribe
to my channel and activate the bell icon 😉 Until its modernization in 2009, the Prisdorf stop
had a plank crossing secured by turnstiles. Today, there is a level crossing with barriers, but the historic
waiting shelter has been lovingly restored and is still standing. A regional train is ahead of us, making a brief stop
in Pinneberg, which is why it’s slowing us down. Vr 0 – Distant signal;
Expect to stop. Distant signals are usually located at a distance equal
to the braking distance of the track before the corresponding signal. “Expect to stop” “Train control, train control” The locomotive primarily uses its traction motors, which are reverse-polarity
reversed to act as generators, to brake, thus protecting its disc brakes. Nevertheless, it reduces the pressure in the main air line, because if a
traction motor should fail, the compressed air brake can take over directly. “And free”

with the timetable change, this service will be reduced to six trains. In addition, EuroCity trains run every two hours to Copenhagen,
and several InterCity trains per day run to Westerland via this railway line. Both the EuroCity trains operated by Danish State Railways and the InterCity trains
operated by Deutsche Bahn are to be replaced by Talgo trains in the near future. Vr 1 – Distant signal repeater;
Expect a proceed. Where the view of the main signal is obstructed,
the distant signal may be repeated as a light signal. “And clear.” The departure signal is clear, so I can accelerate
again and will leave you with that for a moment 😉 In a short video, I once showed you that the locomotive accelerates
solo from a standstill to 140 km/h within 20 seconds, pressing you into your seat like
a passenger in a plane taking off. But even the short intermediate sprint from
60 km/h to 140 km/h in 14 seconds is quite sporty, at least for an 84-ton, 8600 hp locomotive
with a power-to-weight ratio of 73.6 kW/t. The line from Elmshorn to the metropolis of Hamburg
is Schleswig-Holstein’s busiest railway line, so the regional trains use high-capacity double-decker carriages,
while the S-Bahn trains consist of long trains with three units. We arrive at Hamburg-Eidelstedt station,
which is divided into several sections. These sections of the sprawling station are named
after the signal boxes from which they are controlled. Of the original 12 signal boxes, only four remain in operation today, and these
are scheduled to be replaced by an electronic interlocking system in 2027. In September 1990, the first ICE maintenance depot for the
then-new InterCityExpress multiple units opened in Eidelstedt. To this day, it remains the home depot for the ICE 1,
and the Class 101 locomotives are also officially based here. We pass the depot’s washing facility, where the white
multiple units are washed approximately every two weeks. The ICE might even be on its way to one
of these 45- to 60-minute wash cycles. Once an ICE has completed one of its regularly scheduled inspections at the depot,
it waits in the southern group for its next assignment. Invalid signals;
An invalid signal is marked by a white cross
with a black border or it is obscured. Vr 2 – Distant signal;
Expect slow speed. Distant signals indicate which
signal aspect to expect at the corresponding main signal. The approaching distant signal of Hamburg-Langenfelde station
already announces our destination; to the right are the first tracks of the operating yard,
where passenger cars, locomotives, and multiple units are stored. With the opening of the new Diebsteich long-distance railway station, a new
electronic signal box will also be put into operation; the signals are already in place. “Train control, train control” Hp 2 – Slow speed;
The signal prescribes a speed restriction of 40 km/h
unless a different speed is indicated by signal Zs 3. Take a look at the crossover; it cannot yet
be used because there is still a sign in the track. It will probably only be put into operation once
the electronic interlocking system is commissioned. The main line is already four-track here and will
branch off towards Altona and the main station a little later. We leave the main line here and
turn towards the operating yard; storage areas, warehouses, and the
workshop can be seen on the right. “And stop”
storage areas, warehouses, and the
workshop can be seen on the right. storage areas, warehouses, and the
workshop can be seen on the right. The train journey ends here at a raised stop signal;
from there I will continue as a shunting movement. Hp 0 – Stop signal;
Stop. The Hp 0 signal is displayed
at the main signal or the stop signal. Sh 1 – Protective signal;
Movement prohibited. Protective signals serve to block off
a track, (…) or to indicate the lifting of a movement prohibition. After I have made a shunting agreement with the signalman,
he gives me permission to shunt by means of signal Sh 1. In order to be able to take another ‘shoulder glance’
when approaching the crossing, I open the side window. Even though rail vehicles always have right of way in the depot,
I cross the crossing with particular caution. To the right, where the three locomotives are parked,
I am also supposed to park and de-engine my locomotive. However, since I cannot reach the group of locomotives directly,
I must first pass the track in a shunting maneuver. At the Langenfelde depot, ICE trains that don’t need to go to the ICE maintenance
facility and locomotive-hauled passenger trains await their next assignment. To the left, by the way, is a Danish Talgo train, which was in
Langenfelde for training purposes at the time of the video. Since November 3, 2025, the train has been operating
on its first run on the Hamburg–Copenhagen EuroCity line. I decided to pixelate the graffiti on the carriages to avoid
giving the “artists” of these works a platform online. You can find my own work, which I believe was legally created,
on Instagram, so feel free to check out @ic_lokfuehrer 🙂 Meanwhile, I’ve switched to the driver’s cab and
will now drive the locomotive in the other direction. As the ICE 4 rolls past, you can clearly hear the
inverters starting up after the main switch is turned on. The main switch connects the traction and
auxiliary circuits of the vehicle to the power grid. “Fault” “Fault” “Fault” For some reason, which I no longer recall, the locomotive
switched off the main power switch on its own. A fault message on the display informed me why
it had done so and also suggested possible solutions. However, since the reason didn’t seem serious, I was able to
switch the main power switch back on immediately. The intermediate cars of the ICE 1, which are standing to our left,
were presumably taken out of service as part of the LDV modernization. The first generation of the InterCityExpress is being refurbished
for the next few years as part of a service life extension program and is being reduced from twelve
intermediate cars to just nine per train. The classic EuroCity cars are also likely to be
phased out by the Swiss Federal Railways soon. In Langenfelde, there are two locomotive
yards for parking the locomotives. The tracks in these yards are further subdivided
into individual parking spaces using numbers, so the dispatchers always know exactly which
track and parking space a locomotive is on. I’m going to dismantle the locomotive now,
so thank you very much for your ride and see you next time! 🙂

goodness was that some wheelspin / wheel slip at 10:45? The torque those traction motors were putting out on those axles must have been real strong.
The DB Class 101 (Baureihe 101) probably will be one of my favourite Deutsche Bahn electric locomotives. It took the experimental nature of the 12X and turned into somewhat of a reality.
Sehr schöner Arbeitsplatz in dieser Traumlok. Allzeit gute Fahrt
"Legenden"

🐐🔥🗿🍷🐐🔥🗿🍷🐐
Was hältst du von ICE L?
IC Rennfahrer!…On
🔛🔝❤️🔥
Top Notch…!…
Love that acceleration!! Sounds like my Tesla (but much louder).
Is 140 Kph the speed limit for that locomotive always, or just on this trip?
Thanks for a lovely start to my Sunday – another great video.
Moin!
Bin mit ZMS (also beide Lokomotiven aktiv) gefahren…
👍🏻👏🏻🔝❤️🇩🇪
Don’t you use the ”cruise control?” Driving ”manually” using the power handle (and brakes) only?
Cooles Video aus meiner alten Heimat! Danke fuers mitnehmen und fuers Beschleunigungsgefuehl 😉 Klasse Schnitt und Erklaerungen! ..
Advent
Sir, really loved your video! I’m actually very interested in becoming a train driver in Germany, and your video motivated me even more. Could you please explain how you got this job, what qualifications or courses are needed, and how someone like me can start the process? Any tips about language requirements, training, or application steps would be super helpful. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience, and keep making these amazing videos
