9分で冒険する【東京都・伊豆大島】。折りたたみ自転車プロンプトンが船を手に入れた!船輪行で東京の秘境を冒険する絶景ポタリング。

In just six hours— this view! Cycling across Izu Ōshima with a folding bike, the BROMPTON. The Book of Adventure has opened. The jet ferry we planned to take was canceled due to strong winds.
We arrived at the Tōshiki Campground in the evening. The next morning:
More strong winds were blowing across the island. Circling Ōshima with Birdy-san —
about 47 km. First stop: Habu Port. A volcanic lake carved open,
and turned into a port in 1801. A narrow lane usually crowded with tourists— in the morning, it’s silent. But the path ends here. Go back, or climb? We choose the climb. Odoriko-zaka.
248 steps. At the top, a short ride brings us to
the Ōshima Loop Road. A long, open road running along the coast. Such long straights are rare on the island. This is the shape of an ancient volcanic island, carved by erosion. And from here— the battle begins. Izu Ōshima Hill Climb! “Let’s see what this island’s slopes are made of.” “W–what? A sudden 10% grade?” “It has slopes on par with Mt. Yabitsu?” “Impossible—Ōshima’s hills are monsters!” A genuine hill climb. Jokes aside, the slope is steady and relentless. As I pedal upward, I ask myself,“What am I doing this early in the morning?” It’s only a 5 km ascent, but the elevation gain is 300 m. Finally, the descent. “Corners—fun!” “Easy, easy!” Japan’s only desert is here on Izu Ōshima. After about 20 minutes across black sand, it appears. A world completely out of the ordinary. The downhill return is slippery— but still fun! A gentle descent continues for a while. Since the grade is mild, climbing this section would be easier in the opposite direction. Deep green, refreshing air. These downhill hairpins—what elegance. We leave the loop road briefly. A famous power spot, like stepping into another world. A tunnel section—
Mt. Fuji appears beautifully ahead. From the port, the road climbs again. We head toward the coast. But first— Garlic cutlet.
Amazing flavor and satisfying volume. Mount Fuji, seen from here, is picture-perfect. You must ride the Sunset Palm Line—it’s incredible. Even under cloudy skies, the scenery is stunning. Passing through a green tunnel while the sea sits at your side, you let your mind settle a little. A short break here. A good hot spring— pure bliss. A brutal headwind. No views in this section. Then suddenly, it opens up. The sea rushes toward you, and your spirits rise. From here, the real show begins. To the left, enormous layers of earth. To the right, the coastline. This is the place I wanted to ride the most. During road construction in 1953, these striped layers were revealed— formed by more than 100 eruptions over 18,000 years. The slope beyond the Giant Stratified Cliff was also spectacular. The ocean spread out beneath us. The finish line is near. At the end of the loop, I gained a beautiful treasure— but the treasure turned out to be a Mimic.

If you’re wondering where to go for your next casual cycling trip, Izu Ōshima is a great option.
It’s a bike-and-boat adventure from Takeshiba Pier, and the high-speed jet ferry gets you to this island of adventure in just about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Starting from Tōshiki Campground as a base, I put together a 9-minute digest of a 47 km ride exploring spots like Habu Port, the Ura Desert, the Senzu Cut-Through, the Sunset Palm Line, and the Giant Stratified Cliff.

(While I camped in a tent this time, doing a full loop of the island as a day trip is definitely possible.)

I hope this helps anyone planning their next ride.
