Itä-Lappi Saaga / Arctic by Cycle: Korvatunturi Gravel Loop – part.1/3 – Tunkkausta Tunkkausta…
Greetings to the followers of Arvon Fillaripäiväkirja’s channel. As many of you probably know, we are often on the bike saddle on this channel. And so it is this time too. Now we would like to plan such an epic video series. We are on this kind of Eastern Lapland adventure. welcoming the autumn colors on both the Korvatunturi gravel loop and then the Posio gravel loop. And in a bit of a tense mood. I haven’t been on such a long trip for a while and now I have a friend with me, Ville. From Morje. Ville is probably familiar to many from the Roll Outdoors days. Yes, he came there once. Sometimes after a few years of being busy with mountain biking. guiding and between Fiskars and Kiilopää and Rovaniemi. Probably familiar to many. But now you are in a bit of a different job. Yes, currently in this kind of cycling tourism development project called Last Arctic Frontier, which is a joint project of the Eastern Lapland Municipal Federation of Municipalities, this kind of five municipalities. We’re trying to make this Eastern Lapland cycling and canoeing route. I don’t do canoeing myself, but I do cycling to make the routes better known. And I’m here for this project. So I’m making videos of both of these routes. Now we’re jumping in the saddle and heading for the Korvatunturi gravel loop. What can we expect? We’re expecting 300 kilometers and about 1,600 meters of elevation gain in five days. We’re leaving from Savukoski, driving for a couple of days, a little bit of a chemical branch past it, and then we’re expecting one day of a little less cycling and walking, then to Korvatunturi itself and then coming back from Savukoski for a couple of days. It sounds like a very adventurous trip, with a bit of hiking included, so you don’t have to sit on a stool the whole time. Yeah, it’s not a very restorative day, that third day of walking. Yeah, great. Oh my, I was really excited to go on the trip, because I’ve done Bikeback trips, but quite a bit on a gravel bike. I have a bit of a new setup here and had to adjust the tires a bit and everything, so it’s a bit of a thrill to jump on those routes, because I don’t know what’s coming. It’s going to go well. But so I’m dividing this video series into two parts, the Korvatunturi gravel loop, and then after Korvatunturi we’ll go on the Posio route. And what can we expect from Posiola? Posiola is a newer route like this. Let’s go and map out what that route will be like. It’s about 270 kilometers long. It might be a bit of an adventure, the route will be shorter or longer, that’s how the trip will be. The plan is to get to know this route in three days and see what kind of loop we can make there. Yeah. So we have about a week and a half to sit in the saddle and get to know the wonderful landscapes of Lapland. Yeah. We’ll be doing over 500.. 550.. It depends a bit on Posio. So, without further ado, stay tuned. And if you’ve watched the Posio trip in advance, remember to go back on my YouTube channel and watch the Korvatunturi adventure as well. Or the other way around. So, stay tuned and come and wonder what these routes look like and what the autumn trip to Eastern Lapland will bring. So, let’s hit the road. Let’s go . See you. And then smoke in the eyes next. Where are we at the moment? We’re in Savukoski and now we have to snowshoe at the Hirvikaltio wilderness hut. And I’m getting a little confused about the words here, because we’re already getting confused in the days. So let’s go back to the beginning so that… And our guy came here yesterday. I pedaled a 60-kilometer slice. And let’s go back to those feelings for a moment. From Morje! That would have been the first day of the Korvatunturi Graveloop. And such 60 kilometers came with a crank. Yes, the roads here have been drawn with a ruler. It’s been straight for a long time. And that’s it… Yeah, I left early in the morning. It would have been half past eight already. I woke up in Savukoski. Yesterday I went to Mettämau. There to replenish my snacks. Then I went to look for a campsite. I found one in the center of Savukoski. There was a boat launch and a parking space. I was in the car in the parking space overnight. In the morning I drove to the other side to the beach. To the beach and to make some breakfast. To make coffee. It was a nice and peaceful morning at sunrise. The sun was shining brightly in the morning. There was nice coffee and snacks there. From there I started from the center at Savukoski. Would there have been about five kilometers of that dirt road? Then we turned right onto a dirt road. It has been dirt roads all day. Or there might be a small section there, a dirt road too. Mostly dirt roads. Then I had to deviate from the route. So I got on the trails. It wasn’t exactly a single track. Like that… Is it bad for the fell? It’s not a fell. Danger. Swedish, a little higher place. I thought I’d go and see the scenery. Like I’ve said in a video before, or maybe go to Hanko Nuorgam for a bit. When you go to Lapland, it’s worth getting up. The roads are a bit congested. The landscape doesn’t change that much. Then when you get higher up to Ruotsukainen, you had to push yourself there. Although it… Well, you can’t say it’s the hardest, but maybe the second hardest section I’ve ridden a bike on. It’s not like a kilometer of transition there. But there was a lot to do. I sweated. And it’s not any easier to bring it down either. It was slow. So why did I take the bike there? I did some work there. And of course, when all the camera gear and systems were with the bike, there was no way I would have gotten them there otherwise. Then we walked the bike there. There was a nice hut there. I greeted the people who came there, cooked fish soup, walked the bike away and continued on. The crank has been spinning nicely today. Somehow. It’s been such a relaxing day. Just pedaling, no one anywhere. Reindeer seen here and there. I was like this. Quiet and peaceful. It gives you a hint of a wilderness feel. It was really great. Before that, Routsukainen was a reindeer herder’s croft. I went there to wonder about it too. The Bikaland map really shows all the rest stops and streams on the route where you can get water. It’s worth checking it when you leave. It’s worth checking that app on this road, so you know the distances. For example, Routsukainen. I mean Routsukainen, there’s no sign there either. It’s worth looking at the map and it’s easy to recognize because it starts at the top of the hill. and then it started a really long and straight downhill. There’s a place to turn around for a car. But it’s like a quad bike rut. The quad bike had just gone through it, so that’s when I spotted it. There wasn’t any sign posted there. There are rest stops here. I went to Pahtakoski. It was right next to the road. A great place to make a campfire there too. I went here to marvel at the scenery. Since I pedaled here towards Leukkhamara, where I am now, there’s also a pretty huge reindeer herder’s hut here. I went to see that too. There would be plenty of room to sleep there. For example, the weather happens to be a bit worse, so I don’t want to spend time outdoors. You can also use the reindeer herder’s hut. I came to Leukkhamara. There was a guy in that canopy. I thought he should be in peace. I came a little further away. I managed to set up a hammock camp very well . There’s a nice river view to admire. He even had to go for a dip there.
It was damn fresh. Yeah. It’s already a great and expectant feeling with the coming week in mind. This was just such a little scratch. About 500 kilometers will be cranked up during the coming week. So that we can jump back in the saddle tomorrow and see where those routes will lead me and Ville. Yeah, good night and good night. So there was enough beautiful scenery for yesterday too. And last night Ville became my friend in Leukkhamara. Leukkamara cooking shelter. It’s not really possible to keep the names of the places on your tongue. To Leukkamara, though, and this morning we continued our journey from there. Now we’ve pedaled about 40 kilometers for today. We’ve been able to pedal in great landscapes. So really cool. We can get up and down and dangerously to the top. We haven’t reached the fells yet today. But it’s coming. We’re doing this Korvatunturi gravel loop with a four-night tactic, so we’re not in any hurry. That we’ll go pretty much like a filler diary. For peace of mind. We’ve been able to go through some seriously beautiful landscapes today and long straights. Yes, really long. There have been ups and downs, but we’ve been able to go in good weather. Now it’s starting to get a bit rough. We waited in the morning and watched the weather report. I promised a little rain, but it didn’t come. Not in sight, but maybe it will be transferred to today. Let’s see what’s going on here. But so that you don’t have any doubts about who this guy Ville is here, tell me something about yourself. Yes, Ville is indeed from this Last Arctic Frontier cycling and canoeing tourism development project. And I worked there as a project worker, a project worker. And I went here to keep company. As a local guide. And yes, we already talked to Ville while driving here that it’s actually pretty damn good to have a friend here. Because there are long stretches here, and there’s no network on the phone. So that if something happens, you fall, you hurt yourself, then you have a friend there a little bit like a jessama and there for support. And if you go on this route alone, it’s worth making sure that you know how to do at least basic maintenance on your bike. Because it’s pretty quiet here, because there are no houses, no phone connection, so you can call someone to fix your bike, but you have to know how to do the basic maintenance yourself. Yes. And there has to be a certain kind of self-sufficiency. Yeah. You get water from nature. A water purifier anyway. Good to be there. There are no shops or restaurants along the route, but I think there is one here. Yeah, so the Kairijoki wilderness center. Maybe it’s more known as a fishing spot, but now it certainly serves cyclists. They have food, accommodation there and of course you can go fishing, and you can also rent equipment there and buy permits there. Yes. For that. Jump on the taraka and stay on the taraka, because now it’s time for an epic trip. We’re welcoming autumn here in Eastern Lapland. The autumn leaves are starting to make their appearance and the birches are starting to turn nice and the smoke is getting into my eyes. So let’s continue twisting the trip from here. We still have 50 km on the route plan today, which we’ll be cranking out today. And today we’ll get to a great place. Yes, a sauna awaits us. So see you along the route. Moro! Moro! O-ho! Is that uphill really that long, or does it just look like that? Reindeer are grazing. And remember to close the reindeer fence if you’ve ever been there. Well, huh huh! Long day. Long day! But a really atmospheric and eventful whole. Yes. We covered 90 kilometers. It was, and 90 kilometers mostly. Yes, very nice dirt road. Yes, yes. We seriously set off from Leukkuhama in the morning. There was a fear of rain and we had to have breakfast. There were no surprises. But from there, just get on the bike and head towards a cloudy day. There was a bit of a rain threat in the Persians all day. When we set off, there were really heavy clouds. Yes, the rain surprised us a bit at some point. There, Hirvikaltio. Yes, Hirvikaltio. It was only a few meters from the main road to Jorpakko. We went to the hut there to take a break for food. We cooked there. A little snack under the breast. We were starting to get a little hungry by then. It was a really nice-looking place. There was a stream right next to it, where you could get fresh water for cooking. At the same time, we filled our water bottles. Yes. It’s a nice place. A good lunch spot when you leave Leukkuhama. That was a suitable distance. Was it 40km? Yes. That’s how it started after breakfast, towards the bend in the road. I would have liked a little snack. Yes. When we left Leukkuhama, then it started a bit like that. Some kind of long march. But it has been leisurely. But we have twisted that long straight several times. There were and there were quite a few of those long straights. Yes. And it seemed that at the end of every straight there was an uphill hill after that. At least at the end of one straight there was a shockingly long uphill hill, it seemed like a constant. whether we could make it up this hill. But we hadn’t walked uphill hills. No, yes. Everything had to be driven. But then to Kemihaara, when we drove, then this started a bit of a test section. When we came to the Urho Kekkonen National Park area, then here to the wilderness hut, where we are now. here to the Vieriharju wilderness hut. How far is it from Kemihaara? From Kemihaara to here was… Was it pretty much ten? Was that the first sign when the ATV trail started? Yeah. Really great new trail made. Such a grid trail that was easy to ride along. But sometimes there were such rootlets and rock formations that I started to get scared, that if it was a long way, I would happily jam. You pulled bravely. Yeah, yes I was. And I hadn’t been here once before, I knew the difficult parts. Yeah, but challenging. And this end, well then this end again, such a flat Singletrack forest, it was a joy to ride and look at. It was and is really wonderful that forest. Yeah. Yes, I have to compliment you, Ville, for the great route planning you have done for these day trips. Because especially in this autumn time we just got our camps set up and it’s five minutes past eight and the sun is setting now. Perfect timing for today. Of course it would be in a different summer time, when the days aren’t so long apart, so you could squeeze in a longer day. That’s right.
Perfect for this time of year. Yes. What are we going to do next? We’re waiting for the sauna. We joked while driving here that there must be some guys here that have already turned on the sauna so that we can go straight to the steam room. That ‘s almost what happened. Two women went there to warm up the sauna. Then this evening we can go for a little steam room. Yeah. And we can go swimming. A pretty sweaty day, anyway. My back is a bit wet on those hills. That’s right. Yes, it was a leisurely ride. Still, I had to throw my rain gear around my neck somewhere, so they’ll sweat a bit anyway. Yes. Yeah, but we’ll continue the trip tomorrow. Let’s go look at the earwigs. Yes. Rakit said it all the time. Yeah. What else can I say, remember the mosquito repellent when you come in the fall. Or the wood repellent. Yes. With such a warm autumn it has been, it has come as a bit of a surprise that there are mosquitoes and ticks here. Quite nice. Remember the repellents and Ville was still smart, so he had this one, I don’t know why he was so smart. Well, he lives here. A mosquito hat, that would be great. Because there’s really no other way for us to escape outside than with this hat. But yeah, remember the mosquito repellent. But we’ll continue the trip tomorrow, the story then. So we’ll come back tomorrow. It’s good night. See you tomorrow. Moro.
Itä-Lappi Saaga 7.–15.9.2025 / Last Arctic FrontierKorvatunturin Gravel Loop & Posio Gravel Loop550 km / 4700 nousumetriä
