How much I eat to cycle across Japan! (it’s a lot…)

This is everything I eat in a day to cycle a 100 kilometers across Japan. On the agenda for today, we’re pushing a little over 63 miles from Morioa to a small town called Kosaka. But before setting off, Morioa has one of the most famous cop pan bakeries in the country. This dish is essentially a soft roll that’s stuffed with basically any filling that you want. So, I stopped in to grab their two most popular options. One with butter and peanut spread and the other with butter and sweet red bean paste. The texture of the bread is kind of like a hot dog bun. It’s super super soft and packs enough substance to balance out the subtle earthy sweetness of the red beans and the creamy peanut spread. This afternoon has a pretty fat stretch of remote mountain riding in store. So, after a little bit of riding through some quiet highways and farmland, I stopped at this roadside rest stop as my last chance to grab a proper meal. This spot was the epitome of old school. It had some manga available and plenty of classic seating and most importantly, very healthy portion sizes. I went with this katucate lunch set that had a fat pork cutlet and curry that was packing tons of fresh potatoes, carrots, and onions. And also some nice show you ramen as a side, which can never be a bad thing. I do not know how they can possibly make a profit here because this whole spread was only about six bucks. And every item in it had to be homemade. But regardless, now that the belly was full, I hit one last nearby convenience store to stock up on my hydration for the ride and also a little bit of extra pasta themed gummies to help keep my carbs up for the few thousand ft of climbing in store. I’m honestly surprised that this road hadn’t been abandoned yet like a ton of others that we’ve seen this trip because it was absolutely empty for a vast majority of the time. But eventually, I returned to civilization where I found some tiny villages with some traditional temples and shrines. And then finally, the one hotel that was available within like 50 mi each way. And it was a little bit older, but it was super spacious, especially for the price. Then for dinner, this town didn’t have too many options, but there was this quaint little shop with some demon slayer playing and a random leg of honico where I decided to go with their fresh tempura set. It had some interesting items like this pill leaf and a little flower. And for each item, the batter was light, hot, and crispy. And it all paired really well with the subtly sweet and umami dipping sauce. See you guys tomorrow.

  1. The price is right for that potato curry with fried pork katsu, but… is that their version of vindaloo, a spicy curry dish that is traditionally made with marinated meat, typically pork, vinegar, garlic, and various spices. Indian restaurants mostly make vindaloo with potato and either chicken, lamb or prawns and it is one of the fiery spiciest dishes next to phall (that is too damn spicy).
