Ogasawara Night Wildlife Safari | Tokyo’s Secret UNESCO Island Adventure
Preview of night tour We ate our dinner first at our lodge. … before going to our night tour. Fresh sashimi… Fried fish… Miso soup and fruits… It was a delicious dinner… Our tour guide for the night tour picked us up from our hotel… This tour is mostly observation of nocturnal animals and plants. Please mind about the video quality as it is difficult to take videos during night time. TOBIUO PIER
とびうお桟橋 This is our first location of our night tour. We get to see different kinds of fishes near the pier. The tour guide said “We can see sharks going around this area.” “Puffer fish”. “Seems no sharks yet.” We are still waiting for the sharks to come… Well this is wildlife. You won’t expect them to show up always. Hello there, puffer fish! Well, we are unlucky today. No sharks… Moving on to our next location…. MIYANOHAMA BEACH
宮之浜 Tonight was a special night! Green Sea Turtle
緑海亀(Ao-umi-game) (Conservation Staff)
“Taking photos and videos are ok.”
“However, I will teach you how to carry it properly… We got to participate in conservation effort. We are going to release these cute sea turtles at this beach tonight! We are taught on how to carry them properly… … so we can release them safely and happily! Named not for its shell color but for the greenish fat under its shell. I wonder what was in my hair …. (hopefully not what I think it is ….) We also have other guests that are asking questions to the staff. Chichijima is a critical nesting site for Green Sea Turtle in Japan. Nesting season is from May to August (peak around July). Females crawl onto quiet, sandy beaches like Kominato Beach, Miyanohama Beach, to lay eggs. This is how you hold the baby turtle properly… “How many years old?” “Only 0 years old….” Hatchlings emerge after about 60 days and make their way to the sea. All of these baby sea turtles will be released tonight… It’s time to release the turtles! Each of us gets to release 1 turtle… It’s really dark in this beach as there is no lights at all… MIYANOHAMA BEACH
宮之浜
“Turn off the lights please…” MIYANOHAMA BEACH
宮之浜 (From here on, please listen to voice recording during turtle release because we are not allowed to turn on any kind of light source). The turtles in this island chase the moonlight by instinct…. The turtles might mistakenly follow us if we turn on our lights… Mostly you will see black screen… but will show you few pictures/ videos of the baby turtles. Please listen to our voice… “3…2…1 GO RELEASE THE TURTLES!!!!” (Imagine that they are walking towards the sea ^_^.) “I hope it can be recorded by my camera…. ” (Unfortunately, it’s too dark…) “Mine is already at the water…” (We can still see the turtles because of the moonlight…) All of us are clapping because all turtles are now at the sea. “They will come back after 30 years… if those we released are still alive…” “Sleeping…?!!” Seems there is still one turtle that went to sleep and doesn’t want to go to the sea…. We are still cheering for the last turtle to go to the sea… On to our next location… ROUTE 240
Somewhere along the Tokyo Prefectural Route 240 Our tour guide is using red light so that it won’t hurt the bat’s eyes. We are now looking for the bats that are only found in Ogasawara Islands… After searching for more than 30 minutes… Bonin Flying Fox
小笠原大蝙蝠(Ogasawara Ookomori) These bats are critically endangered… “Wingspan is about 80 centimeters (one of the largest bat species in Japan)” “It’s called Oo-komori (in Japanese)…” It’s a large fruit bats that roosts in trees. It plays an important role in pollination. The diet is primarily fruits, flowers and nectar. “Face looks cute….” These bats are only endemic to Ogasawara Islands. They are also known as Bonin fruit bats. This is the last part of our night tour… OGASAWARA NATIONAL PARK
小笠原国立公園 Green Pepe
夜光茸(Yakou-take) It means “Night Light Mushroom” This is native to Chichijima… This mushroom emits a soft greenish glow in the dark. It grows on rotting wood and fallen branches. Good thing our tour guide taught us how to take photo using our phone camera. That’s the end of our night tour… We really enjoyed observing nocturnal animals and plants in the island… Stay tuned for our Day 2 in Ogasawara! Thanks for watching! Sa uulitin!

I like your channel, and I like your videos about the Ogasawara Islands. But I didnt like how you handled the baby turtels. You hold them much too long, for filming reasons :-(. They are not toys and not there to make videos about them. They are endaegared animals and deserve more respect.
I love what I see from the Ogaswara Islands, but I dont think I will ever visit. Because the ferry trip there is very long, and as you confirmed, the sea gets really rough. So I would be terribly sick for 24 hours and much longer (I continue to be sea sick for at least one day after I am on land again). And also, without Japanese, I dont think that we could enjoy the islands like we want to enjoy them. So I am happy to discover them thanks to your videos.
