【徳島→東京】自販機しかない激安フェリーに初めて乗船、18時間越えの船旅は想像以上に…

Hey there, it’s Yuuka! Right now, I’m in Tokushima Prefecture. I’m about to hop on the Tokyu Ocean Ferry and ride all the way to Tokyo from here! I’m guessing it’s this ferry, maybe? I’m getting on the one called “Ferry Dogo.” Anyway, time to grab my ticket now! *The terminal has the ticket counter on the 1st floor, and the boarding gate on the 4th floor. It’s a little past 9:30 AM right now. I left Kitakyushu at 7 PM yesterday got here in Tokushima at 9:20, and my ferry leaves at 11:20. So the ship’s already here! I’ve got about two hours to kill, so I’m gonna go ahead and board early. Just got my ticket! Tonight I’ll be staying in a four-person private room. But even though it’s a 4-person room, since I’m solo— they’re giving me the whole space to myself! I’m SO excited! Alright, let’s go check it out. The ferry I’m taking today is called “Dogo” — this one! Looks like they have different ships too. There’s “Bisan,” “Shimanto,” and “Ritsurin.” I wanna try them all someday. But like… I haven’t seen a single staff member around. Even the ticketing was totally self-service. The sign says “Boarding Gate” but… there’s literally no one in this waiting room either. It’s kinda spooky, not gonna lie… Is this really okay…? Spotted the Dogo! I wonder if I can board already? Still two hours to go. Ah… it’s locked. Let me check when boarding actually starts. Looks like boarding starts 30 minutes before departure. So I still have like an hour and a half to kill. *She’s a proud 90-mins-early type. Well, it is what it is. Guess I’ll pass the time replying to some comments. Finally, it’s time to board! Turns out only three of us are walking onto the ferry. That’s… not a lot. Here’s a little pack of tissues to remember your trip! And here’s the key to your room! Your room’s down the hallway on the left. Looks like I’m in Room A4. I think it’s this way. As expected, most people are boarding by car. But once you’re inside, you do see people here and there. Found it—A4! Walking into the room… It looks like this! It’s actually pretty spacious. There are four beds in here. Next to the door, you’ll see stuff like— blankets and mattresses all neatly stacked. I’m guessing I’ll be making my own bed tonight. Over here, we’ve got pillows, hangers, and some sheets too. There’s a TV right here. And a desk as well. On this side, there’s a floor cushion and a fridge. It’s totally empty inside though. I’ll put in whatever I buy later. And when I open the curtain… The ocean is this stunning emerald green color— it’s absolutely gorgeous. The weather is way too good today—blindingly bright! *Solo traveler perks 💁‍♀️ I think I’ll make this side my base for my stuff, and sleep over on this side. Living the high life, huh? Lately, my travel setup is always a suitcase plus a little bag like this one. I’ve realized this combo is the easiest and comfiest. I boarded kinda last minute… There’s only about 20 minutes until departure now. So I’m gonna take a quick look around the ship and then head out to watch us set sail! This is my room, but— down this way, there are a ton more rooms lined up. *Spotted a ship map! Looks like there’s even a relaxation space. And what’s this “Ocean Plaza” thing? Sounds intriguing… From the looks of it, this ship is super well-equipped. I think this area is called the Ocean Space? The view here is absolutely amazing. And the desk even comes with built-in outlets! Whoa, it’s a photo spot! *Yeah, no way I’m brave enough to pose solo… This is awkward… Abort mission! Anyway, there are a bunch of vending machines here. I mean, I’m not gonna go for the beer… probably. There’s even one for ice cream! And of course, cup noodles. They’ve even got a hot water dispenser here. You can grab snacks, soup, noodles, all kinds of stuff. Here’s a little shelf with sweet breads— just some light bites you can pick up. Oh, they’ve got udon too! Looks sooo good. And some grilled tripe and takoyaki! Honestly, the food selection’s pretty legit. This ferry doesn’t have a restaurant, but there are so many vending machines that everyone just eats using these. *It’s like a floating izakaya! Since it’s all vending machines— they’ve got plenty of microwaves too. Uh-oh… I’m already getting hungry. Once we set sail, I might just grab something right away. What’s calling my name right now is— gratin, curry, and udon. Think I could handle all three? Okay… maybe not. Still debating—do I eat in my room or here? There aren’t many people around, so… I’m actually the only one here right now. Feels totally chill enough to talk out loud. *A dream setup for socially awkward folks like me. The ferry just started moving slowly. Like, *really* slowly— it’s kinda hard to tell if we’re actually moving. Bye-bye, Tokushima! I’ll be back again soon! Getting kinda hungry, so I’ll grab some food and head back to my room. It’s not super crowded or anything, but there are people here and there. I think I’ll feel more relaxed eating in my room. Got my lunch! I went with a doria. I think it was eggplant and meat sauce doria? They had beer too, of course, but it’s lunchtime, so I decided to behave. We left around noon today, and we’ll arrive at Tokyo Port tomorrow morning. *Wait… what?! *Apparently I started drinking beer without even realizing it. Let’s eat! Mmm, it’s good! It’s my first time doing a ferry trip with just vending machines, so I was a little worried at first. But honestly, it tastes great! I could totally eat four meals here—lunch, dinner, late-night, and breakfast. Now that I think about it, this might be my first time boarding a ferry around noon. I usually take ones that leave at 6 PM, or even 8 PM—pretty late. But spending the whole day on a ferry from 11 AM? That’s totally new and kinda exciting. Oh, and some passengers got on way back in Kitakyushu! They’ll be on board for like… 35 hours! Isn’t that insanely long? I think it’s the second-longest ferry ride in Japan, if I remember right. *For reference: Tokushima → Tokyo is 18 hours. They mentioned this in the announcement earlier, but this is one of Japan’s long-distance ferries. And apparently, there are only 15 long-distance ferry routes in the whole country. So this is one of that rare bunch! I haven’t done many long-distance ferry rides— mostly medium-distance ones. But today’s gonna be a long one, so I’m excited to enjoy it! Oh, and about the ticket prices— For a shared room (second class Western-style), it’s about $98 per person. If you want a private room for two (a bit smaller than this one), it’s around $165 in total, including the room fee and base fare. And this 4-person private room I’m in— came out to $178 with the room fee and fare combined. By the way, if you take the bullet train instead— an unreserved seat costs around $126. So the shared room option on the ferry is actually cheaper! All done eating! It was delicious. But… definitely not enough. I might sneak in a second lunch before dinner. For now, I’m just gonna lie down and chill a bit. *Time to set up my chill zone for maximum lounging. *The beds are fold-down types attached to the wall. *Just gonna relax for a bit, gently rocked by the waves. Took a little break, and now it’s 3 PM. Right now, we’re somewhere south of Wakayama. And since it’s 3 PM… it’s officially snack time! I grabbed some fries. Still 14 hours to go, huh… I knew it’d be long, but wow, this is LONG. I figured I might get bored today, so I brought some art supplies with me! *The kind of entertainment that doesn’t need Wi-Fi. Done! It’s the ocean. Since the ferry was floating earlier, I decided to draw it too. Honestly… not bad, right? *Low-key love drawing, so I usually carry this little art kit in my bag. All done! It’s my birthday event poster! It’s happening on August 9th—hope you guys come! *Had to go handmade… budget reasons. Still got 14 hours to go… what now? Maybe I’ll nap again and think about it later. *No signal anyway, so it’s basically nap or snack life. Here’s what it looks like outside right now. The sun’s starting to set—it’s that golden hour glow. Ahh, it’s cold… But wow, it’s so open and spacious. I love it. If you look down like this— you can really tell we’re moving at a pretty good speed. ♪ The sea is wide and vast ♪ Retreat!! This area isn’t part of the private rooms. No one’s around—maybe I’ll sneak a peek? Here’s what it looks like. It’s kinda similar to when I took the Sunflower Sapporo ferry. Same kind of vibe, really. Heading this way… Ooh! Found the women’s bath already! Apparently it’s open 24 hours! Yayyy ^_^ That means I can go in anytime! The men’s bath is over on the other side. *There’s even a space that feels kinda like a living room. Looks like they’ve got a forward lounge too. Let’s check it out! It’s super spacious. But the curtains are all closed. *Since it’s at the bow, they keep the curtains closed at night. Taking a quick break. Not sure if it’s coming through on camera, but— the ship is rocking quite a bit right now. I did take motion sickness medicine before boarding, just in case, but I’m starting to feel… kinda iffy… *Me conducting the ocean’s rhythm If the rocking is on a scale of 1 to 10, this is like… an 8. I once rode from Oarai Port in Ibaraki all the way to Tomakomai Port in Hokkaido, and that one was super rocky too. This is giving me similar vibes… That time, I got really seasick and it kind of traumatized me. Hoping I’ll be okay today… But honestly? I’m already struggling… The sun’s gone down and it’s turning into night, so I think it’s time to change into something comfy. Transform! Changed into my loungewear! I seriously love spending time in pajamas, but whenever I wear them outside, people always comment like, “Wait, are you seriously going out in *that*?” So today, I made my own pajama set that’s cute *and* outing-approved! Look—it says “GOLON”! I can lounge in it *and* go outside. Win-win. It’s a one-of-a-kind indoor outfit I designed myself! Isn’t it super cute? I drew the design on paper and had it made! I kinda wanna go “golon” and lie down right now, but I haven’t had dinner yet and I’m getting hungry… So I’m off to find some dinner! *Really wanted a beer, but I already had one at lunch… so I’m holding back. Cheers! So good. Seriously, so good. It’s all from vending machines, but the taste is surprisingly legit. I could keep eating this without getting tired of it. It’s 7:17 PM right now, but I can’t check my location because I have no signal. Actually, I’ve had zero signal for the past two or three hours. With no phone, I’ve been a little bored to be honest. We’re arriving at Tokyo Port tomorrow morning at 5:30 AM. If I fail to wake up in time, this might end up being my last meal on board. *I swear I’m waking up early. No excuses. All done! I’m stuffed. *Went for a post-dinner stroll and stopped by the gift shop. *These keychains would totally make cute gifts for friends. *Perfect little souvenir from Dogo! *Awa pork curry—this looks insanely good. *They also sell alcohol and some original merch too! *Came out to check the night view from the observation deck. It’s pitch black—can’t see a thing. But at least the ship’s still moving, so that’s reassuring. Alright, I’m heading into the public bath now! Bye for now! Can’t show you the bath area, though— sorryyy! Just got out of the bath. Bare-faced and proud. There’s this spot I’ve been curious about, so I’m gonna go check it out. Found the game corner! But there’s no claw machine—just slot machines and this game where you stick a rod into a hole. Well… let’s give it a shot! I’ve got my eye on #11—the Squid Game tracksuit. So I’m aiming for number 11! Nope, total fail… I’m a pro at claw machines, but this is totally out of my league. I’ll admit defeat and walk away. I’m back in my room! Got myself some ice cream after the bath. It cost me 200 yen—which is like $1.30! Even cup noodles were around 250 yen. Things are kinda pricey on board. Anyway—let’s dig in! YUM. It’s 9:27 PM now, and I still have zero signal. So I honestly have no idea where we are. Earlier this afternoon, the ferry was rocking a lot, and I started feeling a little seasick… But it’s calmed down now— it’s barely moving anymore. Oh, and the public bath was actually super spacious! No one else was there— I had the whole place to myself. Loved it. The only downside? The hair dryer was suuuper weak. Took me like 20 minutes to dry my hair. But yeah, that was the only issue. They had body soap, shampoo, and conditioner too— really thoughtful setup overall! So yeah, it’s only 9:30 PM right now, but the ferry arrives at Tokyo Port at 5:30 AM tomorrow, so I’m hoping to wake up around 4. Which means… it’s bedtime for me. Not sure if I can fall asleep this early though… Gonna try my best to sleep anyway. Good night!
