Sales Journal Prologue 2 In the previous video, we started from the parking lot and arrived at Haneda Airport This time, we will begin from outside the Taxi Waiting Area 2 at Haneda International Airport From here, I will show you the structure of the taxi waiting area at Haneda International Airport, the flow to the boarding area, and the actual video of picking up passengers and taking them to their destinations, along with the sales performance and total revenue for the day If you watch until the end, you will understand how the Haneda specialized private taxi operates The internal roads of Haneda Airport are all one-way On the left is the Villa Fontenu Hotel, and on the right is the exit to Parking Lot 5, followed by the entrance to the bus waiting area The taxis waiting outside in line are station wagons and vehicles with ECD (English Certified Driver) certification The qualification for taxis to enter the international taxi waiting area is that they must be vehicles with excellent (優良) qualifications, and only drivers who have completed intermediate or higher English training at the taxi center are allowed to enter Vehicles with intermediate or higher training in salmon are in the general line Wagons can be placed on the wagon line and the regular line, and ECD-qualified vehicles can be placed on both the regular and ECD lines In the second terminal, on the far right is the ECD line, followed by the wagon line, then the general line 4, next is the incoming ECD line, followed by the incoming wagon line, and on the far left is the incoming general line Because there are many general lines, general vehicles do not wait outside and just enter, but since there is only one line each for ECD and wagons, they often wait outside I have ECD qualifications for wagon vehicles, so I can park in any of the three lines, but the general line has narrow vehicle spacing and many waiting vehicles, so I tend to avoid it So I entered the ECD line ECD qualification is awarded to those who have completed advanced foreign guest English training, finished universal driver training, and passed the practical English proficiency test I obtained my qualification 8 years ago when the corporate taxi system was implemented At that time, there were fewer than 200 vehicles in all of Tokyo, so when international flights arrived, it was nice because you could go directly to the boarding area without much waiting Now, with more than 1,700 people, there is always a long line to wait in, so it has become less beneficial In my time, it was difficult to make an exam reservation, and the waiting period for the exam was long, with a pass rate of about 50% Now, I’ve heard that the exam format has changed and become easier These days, even if you can’t speak English fluently, just memorizing some basic customer service English is enough to pass It seems to have lost a lot of its original meaning It feels like the administration of the taxi center is being used solely as a means to increase exam fees and textbook sales If you turn like this and go towards the ECD line, you will advance There is a monitor on the left,
and you can see the very end of Gate 1 I will move to the first waiting area by observing the movement on this monitor If you proceed to the first waiting area like this, The far right is the waiting area, then to the left is the international terminal drop-off area, Next is the way to domestic terminal 2, and the far left is the road to Kanpachi (环八) The first waiting area has the two leftmost rows for ECD, followed by two rows for wagon vehicles, and four rows for general vehicles, with a total of 8 vehicles per row Typically, 14 rows of vehicles are waiting, and if the first waiting area is full, about 96 taxis will be waiting Since the ECD stands in two rows on the far left, it prefers to be able to exit the line when there is a wireless call or something similar Currently, one has exited, so we cross the rows in order There is also an effect of slightly reducing the waiting time as we can move one row forward At Haneda, the principle is to proceed in the order of arrival for each row So in the waiting area, if one vehicle leaves like now, we fill it in order On the left, you can see the drop-off area for the international terminal Finally, I have reached the front row to head to the boarding area When you stand in line at the taxi stand like this, about 16 taxis will enter the taxi stand, and the first 8 will pick up passengers in order The vehicle standing on the right is one that has been called in via radio and is waiting If the front of the boarding area becomes empty, we will move forward as directed by the staff It seems that there are about 20 passengers waiting due to a delayed train, and they will be boarded in order from here The male passenger who came to me was a customer from a fixed-rate area that I don’t go to, so I directed him to the next car and called the next passenger I entered the destination as ‘Navi’ and started the trip My passenger’s destination was Akishima Station in Akishima City, Tokyo, which is about 50 kilometers from Haneda, so I was lucky to have a medium-distance customer If you go left at this intersection, you will head towards Domestic Terminal 1 and the entrance to the Bayshore Line High-Speed Airport Central If you go right, you will be heading towards the Tokyo outer ring road via Route 8 And this is the road to the West Entrance of the Airport and Haneda, heading towards Yokohama We are passing through the tunnel under the airport runway On the left is Domestic Terminal 1, and on the right is Terminal 2 across from the Bay Shore Line Entering the Bay Shore Line high-speed airport central entrance here As you merge, you’ll immediately come across a tunnel under the runway From here, it’s an 80-kilometer zone There are hardly any cars at this late hour You can find out the current traffic situation on the capital expressway here Even if you enter from the west entrance of the airport, you can join the Bay Shore Line here, but in terms of time, the Airport Central is faster Passing the Oi South exit and going past the Oi Service Area If you go straight, you can reach Narita via the Rainbow Bridge and Chiba If you go left from here, it connects to the city center via the Yamate Tunnel Here, there is a fork again; the left leads to the city center, such as Ginza and Ueno, connecting to the Yokohama Line, while going straight is the Yamanote Tunnel On this day, the Yokohama Line is closed for construction Now we are entering the Yamate Tunnel, which is the second longest tunnel in the world and the longest in Japan With a length of 18.6 meters, it is said to be the longest highway tunnel in the world, which opened in 2015 after 23 years of construction that began in 1992 The tunnel runs beneath Yamate Road, connecting Shibuya to the Tomei Expressway, Shinjuku to the Chuo Expressway, and passing through Ikebukuro to link to the Saitama area via the Metropolitan Expressway Line 5 Exit here onto the Shinjuku Metropolitan Expressway Line 4, Now entering the Central Expressway, Passing the speed camera There is another speed camera again, After passing the Central Expressway tollgate, the speed limit here will be 80 kilometers After driving along the Chuo Expressway and exiting at the Kunitachi exit, I will now drive about 10 kilometers on the national road Listening to the passenger’s story, they came from Yamanashi Prefecture by car, parked near Akishima Station, and took a train to Kunitachi Station, which is one stop away From there, they took a bus to Haneda Airport They went to the airport and departed, but on the way back, their flight was delayed, causing them to miss the bus, so they took a taxi to the parking lot where they had left their car Driving to Haneda by car is expensive due to tolls and parking fees, so they did it to save money, but the flight delay ended up costing them more So I felt that it didn’t work out, and I got off the expressway at Kunitachi There is also a way to get off at the next exit, Hachioji, which is faster but a bit of a detour The expressway toll is also a bit more expensive, costing an additional 4,500 yen The current time is fast because there is no car, so I came by the shortest route I have finally arrived in front of the parking lot I heard that it takes more than an hour to get home by car from here I was happy about it, but I think you’ll be very tired after returning from the trip This is the fare with late-night surcharge, including expressway fees, and a 10% discount for long distances When I set the airport here, taking the expressway from the entrance of Hachioji results in a long detour of 59 kilometers Passengers who unexpectedly take a taxi for unforeseen reasons may be sensitive to the fare, so I believe that considering this and planning a route to minimize the fare is also a part of customer service I turned onto the national road, and happily noticed a Chinese restaurant that is open 24 hours As a diabetes patient, I couldn’t resist the temptation of ramen, which my doctor advised me not to eat if possible When I saw the sign, I wanted to eat it, so I parked the car and went in I had Guangdong noodles, and perhaps because it had been a while, I enjoyed it very much Both the dumplings and fried rice looked delicious, but I held back Since becoming a diabetic, there’s almost nothing I can eat Not having the joy of eating in life is like torture Before that happens, I want to remind you to take care of your health Coming back to the national road, I decided to take the highway from Chofu without going through Hachioji due to time constraints Even if we arrive early, there won’t be any flights available Arriving at the Chofu expressway entrance like that, Now, we will take the Chuo Expressway to the Shuto Expressway, and then go to Haneda Airport via the Yamate Tunnel This is the Yamate Tunnel junction The curve is large and long, and since it’s downhill, you need to be careful Also, when you come out of the Yamate Tunnel exit, what you see far to the left is the Tokyo Port container terminal, and right in front of it is the Shinkansen terminal Get off at the West Exit of the airport and go back to the international departure lounge There is a police patrol car patrolling in front, and at this time, there are no taxis waiting at the second waiting area Still, I am required to go in and check the monitor, and I will be moving to the first waiting area I check and enter the first waiting area I thought for a moment about which line to place it in, but since they were almost similar, I decided to place it in the ECD column If there are vehicles leaving, they might go to the front line, and it’s also easy to leave if there’s an Uber call As expected, there has been little movement and a lot of time has passed, and the day is gradually brightening The driver of the car in front seems to be dozing off as the line is moving, so I’m trying to wake them up Many company taxis wait during late-night hours for breaks, and as a result, there are many people sleeping It is completely getting bright Time has passed again Finally, we are moving to the second boarding area Move forward We are heading to Minamiazabu with foreign family passengers living in Japan I persuaded them that taking the highway is faster and cheaper, even though they asked to take regular roads Some people think that the highway tolls are expensive, but the meter fees that accumulate while waiting at traffic signals on regular roads often add up to more In other words, if you stop for a cumulative total of 1 minute and 35 seconds, it will increase by 100 yen If you wait at a traffic signal for a long time, you can expect it to increase by about 100 yen Moreover, if the traffic is heavy, it will take more time and the toll will be more expensive On the highway, there is a separate button that prevents the toll from increasing even when you are stopped In the end, we decided to take the highway, getting on at Airport West and getting off at Shibaura, which is the shortest distance to our destination There is a speed camera here too The right side is east, so the morning sunlight is dazzling I got off at Shibaura, and since I need to make an immediate left turn, I should be in the far left lane However, it’s a straight section where cars coming from behind are speeding, so it’s a place that requires caution Fortunately, there were no cars coming from behind, so I changed lanes smoothly Passing by the high-rise tower mansions of Shibaura Island If you go straight, you’ll reach Tamachi Station, and then turn right This intersection is also a place that you always need to be careful at Even with a green light, it’s unprotected, so you have to carefully avoid the cars coming from the front It’s the Hudanotsuchi (Satsu no Tsuji) intersection, which gets very congested during the day You can see Tokyo Tower in the distance This is a place called Mita, and we are passing by Keio University on the right This is where I first enrolled in graduate school when I came to study abroad 35 years ago I have arrived at Minamiazabu There is also the Korean embassy here, and Azabu is a place where many foreigners live The consulate used to be here but has now moved to Shinjuku I said I would stop by the Lawson convenience store, so I got off here Since I took the shortest route, the fare was indeed low At Haneda, we consider an average revenue of over 8,000 yen, including express fees, for each passenger during the daytime We calculate around 2,500 to 3,500 yen per hour The same goes for urban operations; we calculate it that way Private taxis are satisfactory if they charge around 30,000 to 40,000 yen for 10 hours of service, excluding taxes and highway fees If you go left at this intersection, you will find the Korean Embassy On the right is the Australian Embassy I am taking the express train from Shibaura back to Haneda It’s early in the morning, but there are waiting vehicles at the second waiting area We decided to wait in the ECD line again this time I’ve arrived at the first waiting area A colleague from the private taxi service said they just returned from a trip to Taiwan, and another person mentioned they went to Sendai I received a gift of snacks when I greeted them I see the private taxis here almost every day, so we tend to get along well Introducing the facilities of the international taxi waiting area, the first waiting area has restrooms, a smoking room, and vending machines Before COVID, there was also a convenience store that sold lunch boxes, cup noodles, bread, and snacks With international flights halted due to COVID-19, the airport has now closed down To reduce management costs, even the trash cans have been removed, and the restrooms frequently break down, resulting in a more challenging environment than expected If the wait is long or if a friend is nearby, I usually ask them to move the car and go to the convenience store inside the terminal The airport taxi waiting area is operated by the taxi center, which collects operating fees from Tokyo taxi center Private taxis pay 15,000 yen per year, while corporate taxis pay 35,500 yen per vehicle per year Although this contributes to the airport’s overall operating costs, I sincerely hope they pay more attention to the situation Finally, we are going to the third boarding area These Chinese people seem to have reserved a Chinese Haiya, but they walked back because they didn’t know the location So I guided them forward and sent them off From 7 AM to 1 PM, there are no security guards at the boarding area, so each driver has to get out and assist, which makes it a bit crowded A foreign husband, a Japanese wife, and two mischievous boys were on board The destination is Gotanda, but they asked to take the regular road instead of the highway Since it’s in Shinagawa Ward, that might be the case, but even for a short time, taking the highway is more efficient However, since the passengers want it this way, we should follow their wishes It’s not really rush hour yet, and it seems like the fare will be a bit higher than taking the expressway, so it’s a win for me The weather is clear and sunny The boys were making a lot of noise, and their mom kept scolding them, but their foreign dad was sleeping soundly, oblivious to it all Anyway, it was noisy and I was overwhelmed So, I drove along National Route 1 and turned onto Sony Road This temporary suspension is a source of income for the police station right in front It’s a place that can be dangerous due to the frequent minor accidents This so-called Sony Road has now moved behind Shinagawa Station, but it used to be the location of Sony’s headquarters It’s also a place where many tower mansions are being built due to redevelopment It’s a tower mansion, but the parking spaces are all so narrow There are many even narrower places The children are very polite and say thank you The road isn’t blocked after all, and the fare turned out to be less than expected This area is still continuing to build tower mansions It is located not far from Gotanda Station, making it a fairly good location It’s been about 11 hours since I left the parking lot, so I’ve decided to wrap up for the day and head home The first job was a mid-distance run, and the other two were below average, so the sales aren’t that great, but I’m not pushing myself and I’m heading home, looking forward to the next opportunity As I go, I see that the hotel in Ginza has a checkout time, so I’m thinking of hoping for one last Uber The motorcycle police are referred to as ‘shirobai’ here, and they are hiding to catch vehicles that run red lights I’ll park the car in this empty spot and wait for just 10 minutes It’s Friday, but unexpectedly there are no Uber calls at all I guess I should just give up and head home However, I see a guest waving their hand in front of the hotel There’s a taxi in front of him, but since there are no bags, he’s pretending not to see it because it’s a nearby customer I will take you The destination is Marubeni Corporation in Otemachi, and as expected, it’s close But it’s fine since it’s in the direction of home They seem to be Chinese people who are on a business trip to the trading company Let’s take a moment to appreciate the morning cityscape of Tokyo The Imperial Palace is visible ahead It is the residence of the Emperor and is located in the center of Tokyo The perimeter of the palace is about 5 kilometers, and there are many people jogging around it On the right is Otemachi, the center of finance and business in Japan The Marubeni headquarters is visible ahead, but it’s across the street, so we decided to meet next to the building This is the last sales figure for the day I’m really going home now On this day, there were about 11 hours and 30 minutes of operation with 4 business trips, total sales including tax were 38,040 yen, and the distance traveled was 174 kilometers, resulting in a profit of about 218 yen per kilometer Finally, I will conclude Prologue #2 while watching the driving video from Akihabara to Ueno Station From next time, the business diary will continue as a segment showing the daily business status without much explanation If you’re curious about how Tokyo’s private taxis, which operate solely through Haneda Airport and Uber, do business, I would appreciate your support through subscriptions and likes Thank you for watching until the end
