日本縦断自転車旅行で食べたもの!(山ほど)
This is everything I eat in a day to cycle across Japan. On today’s agenda, we’re continuing our push through the Alps with a 42-mile ride from Gujo to Takyama. But first, this morning, I woke up sipping some tea in an old school riverside guest house. Here, they offer a traditional Japanese breakfast with your stay for about 1,200 yen. And this baby probably had about 20 different items ranging from simmering stew to some fresh fruits and yogurts to pickled vegetables to fish to bacon and eggs and even fresh pots of my own tea and rice. If this isn’t the greatest morning ritual of all time, I don’t know what is. The spread offered lots of traditional Japanese mountain foods, but still a fair dose of comfort options if those aren’t for you. This was easily my favorite of the trip. As I got moving, basically all of today’s route was along this quiet mountain highway that packed about 4,500 ft of climbing. So that meant I had to be pretty smart about stocking up on hydration for the long stretches of nothingness. But eventually I reached this highway rest stop to take a quick break and grab some lunch. My rule of thumb in Japan is when in doubt, pick up some katuc. And it’s never done me wrong. The flavor of the dish can vary massively from place to place, but today it was on the sweeter side with plenty of warm spices, caramelized onions, and a beautiful view to boot. After the meal, I was still feeling a little bit hungry. So, before pushing on, I snagged this little vanilla lavender soft serve, which was super creamy and smooth and was the boost I needed before the big chunk of climbing and pushing through the quiet roads that I had ahead. But eventually, I finally rolled into Takayama, home of the great 100 kg gold heist in 2007, where three dudes pulled up, grabbed the 100 kg gold bar that sat unguarded with no sensors, shoved the staffer aside, and then left. Anyway, tonight I’m staying at a semi-traditional hotel that set me back about 75 bucks. Then for dinner, this dude gave me some directions to this ultra busy gyoza spot nearby. So, after waiting for a couple of hours, I picked up some fresh karadag, which were nice and juicy with a sweet and umami soy sauce glaze, a non-alcoholic lemon sour that tasted like lemon sparkling water, and this flight of freshly grilled pork, beef, and vegetable gyoza. All of them were super unique and came with their own sauce to complement their respective filling. The total price for the day was 130 bucks.

Vanilla lavender is cream!!
The gyozas look good!❤
Seems you stayed at a ryokan. That is the absolute travel dream!
If it gets colder while you’re there, try finding one with an onsen (hot spring) if you don’t mind splurging a little! Some of them even have private onsen attached to your room! But if you can’t swing it, people usually aren’t there if you wake up suuuuper early (expect maybe a few of those hardcore ojii-sans lol).
