Caos Tormentas en Santa Ana,El Salvador! ¡Fuertes Vientos y Lluvias Paralizan La Ciudad!
Santa Ana, the second largest city in El Salvador and one of the economic, cultural, and administrative centers of the country’s western region, witnessed a natural phenomenon on Thursday that caused both human and severe material losses. A severe storm paralyzed the city with intense electrical activity, strong winds, torrential rains, downed power poles, toppled trees, flooding, and structural damage. The storm began to take effect in various parts of the city, especially in Santa Ana Centro. Starting in the evening, as the rainfall intensified toward the city center, wind speeds gradually increased, quickly impacting infrastructure in many areas. Las Huertas Street, which provides access to the Santa Edubijes neighborhood, was closed to traffic due to downed power poles. Eyewitnesses reported that some of the poles fell on parked cars, causing severe damage. The cables stretched across the downed poles posed a danger to both pedestrians and drivers. At approximately the same time, a tragic incident occurred in the area of La Floresta soccer field in the El Ibu neighborhood. A 50-year-old woman, Anita, died when a large tree fell on the area of chalets, where residents were gathered to watch a soccer match. A woman who was injured in the incident was rushed to the nearest health center . Eyewitnesses stated that the tree fell suddenly and that the ground became slippery due to the strong wind, triggering the disaster. Independencia Street, just one block from City Hall, was the center of another major incident during the storm. There, two electric poles collapsed one after the other, completely blocking the street and causing power lines in the area to break. The blackout was not limited to this street. Many areas of downtown Santa Ana were without power for more than two hours. In neighborhoods plunged into darkness, residents chose not to leave their homes due to the severity of the storm. The storm severely affected not only the electrical infrastructure but also the city’s social and commercial areas. The metal structures of the stalls in the Santa Lucía viewpoint area were severely damaged by the hurricane-force winds. The roofs and support poles of the stalls were torn off and swept away by the wind. This situation represented a great economic loss for small merchants and market vendors in the area. The problems caused by the rain at the city’s entry points negatively affected transportation, especially in the Paso de Vaya area, where puddles formed on the main arteries. The roads surrounding a shopping center were covered in water, disrupting vehicle traffic. This situation posed a serious risk, especially for low-rise vehicles and motorcycles. Authorities warned drivers not to use these roads. Crews from the Santa Ana Centro municipality worked hard throughout the night to mitigate the storm’s effects. The Landscape and Green Spaces Unit also worked to remove a fallen tree in the España neighborhood. At the same time, personnel from the Department of Recreation and Sports were deployed to remove a large tree that had fallen in the Chal est Óscar Alberto Quiteño area. During this work, the perimeter of the area was blocked off with safety tape, and citizens were not allowed to approach. Personnel from the electricity distribution company also began removing the fallen poles and installing new ones early this morning. In particular, the repair of two fallen poles on Avenida Independencia Sur, near City Hall, has become a priority to restore power and open traffic. According to the meteorological service, winds of up to 30 were recorded during the storm . km/h, causing tree downfall and damage to structural elements in the area. Electrical activity caused by the storm frequently lit up the sky, causing concern among the population. Loud thunder and sudden lightning continued uninterrupted throughout the night. Residents of Santa Ana shared their situation on social media and asked for urgent help from the authorities. Some citizens argued that the municipality’s response to the crisis was insufficient and emphasized that civil protection teams should play a more active role, especially the prompt removal of fallen trees and poles was among the priority demands in terms of life safety. In post-storm assessments, it was determined that there had been severe property damage to both public and private property. Downed power lines, broken wires, damaged vendor stalls, flooded roads, and flooded vehicles disrupted the normal flow of life in Santa Ana. The need to strengthen the city’s electrical infrastructure, increase the capacity of storm drainage systems, and conduct periodic tree trimming has returned to the agenda following this incident. Authorities and residents report that these types of severe weather events in Santa Ana have increased significantly in recent years compared to the past, especially during the rainy seasons. The strong winds, which are effective with short-lived but intense downpours, cause similar emergencies almost every year in different parts of the city. Such storms, which were less frequent in the past, have recently become shorter in duration and more destructive in their effects. This situation tests both the resilience of infrastructure and the response capacity of the local government. Meteorological data shows that Santa Ana has experienced a higher-than- normal number of short but intense downpours and strong winds since the first months of this year. The city’s topography and residential density exacerbate the effects of these weather events, while insufficient infrastructure in some areas increases the risks. Officials state that the increased number of these events may also be related to changes in climate cycles, but one of the main problems is that existing infrastructure is not adequately prepared for these sudden and strong weather movements. According to expert predictions, there is a high probability of similar weather events occurring in Santa Ana and the surrounding area in the coming months. We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to those injured due to the loss of life, injuries, and property damage caused by the severe storm in Santa Ana. We believe it is of great importance that both the local government and all segments of society work together to restore the city to normal and safe conditions as soon as possible.
