Cycling in Sanjo: Ohtani Dam (60 km ride)

We’re starting here from SAKUNOYA
(a guesthouse in Sanjo). I’m going to be showing you one of my
favourite rides here in Sanjo. Now, I am at best a mediocre cyclist. This is a sixty kilometre ride, mostly
flat on the way there, with a big climb in the middle, to Ohtani Dam. Now you can do this ride from anywhere
in Sanjo. And that’s the beauty about cycling in Sanjo. From inner Sanjo, you know, Machiyama’s over there, you can be at the river cycling on an unobstructed bike path in less than
ten minutes. And then in another ten minutes, you
got rice paddies all around you, surrounded by the mountains riding alongside the river. It’s really beautiful. So if you’re coming to Japan to do some
cycling, or if you’re living in Japan and you like cycling, you’ve got to put
this route on your list. Let’s go check it out. No one behind me – let’s do it! Alright, look at this view. And there you go, you see that?
The cliff face? That’s an onsen.

My favourite cycling destination in Sanjo: Ohtani Dam!

I started my ride at SAKUNOYA, a guesthouse in central Sanjo. I made my way to the bike path along the Ikarashi Levee, following that to Route 289, then took the long way along Routes 331, 290, and 9 before returning to Route 289 to arrive at Ohtani Dam.

On the way back, I stuck to Route 289 the whole way to take in some different sights.
