【四國遍路 香川縣 ep.05】|前往第71番 彌谷寺|七處巡禮|Marugame Rent a Cycle|單車遍路|To No. 71 Iyadaniji|Shikoku pilgrimage
🥳 It’s now June 24th. I think it’s Tuesday 🤣 Just rented an electric-assisted bike in central Marugame City. I was riding through the city center earlier— Took a wrong turn and went in circles for a bit. Finally got back onto this main road. This bike feels much easier to ride than yesterday’s one. The kickstand— It automatically locks when you set the bike upright. Feels more secure that way. Today’s first destination is Temple 71 — Iyadani-ji. The “Seven-Temple Pilgrimage” officially begins. When planning the route, Google gave me two options — one through the city, and another along the coastline. I figured, since I always pass through the city, why not try the coastal route this time? Estimated distance is 13 km. After that, a small climb and I’ll arrive. With a full battery, the display shows I can ride 38 km. So maybe after Temple 77, I’ll head back and ask the shopkeeper if I can swap the battery. Because from Temple 78 to 80 and back, it’s close to 30 km. That’s a significant stretch. Realistically, the current battery probably won’t last the whole day. I’ll likely have to pay extra. Most of today’s roads should look like this. No steep climbs—maybe a few gentle slopes. We’re at the Kanakura River now. Just climbed a big slope to get onto the overpass. Unfortunately, today’s weather feels worse than yesterday. The sky’s even gloomier. I’ve figured out the trick to riding this kind of bike. Try not to sit too far forward—keep your posture upright. Don’t press down too hard on the seat, and your butt should last longer. According to the official site, Chūritsu Banshō-en charges an entrance fee. But if you show the bike key, you get a discount. Though I’m not sure what’s inside to see. If I can finish today’s route early and reach Marugame Castle— It’s really close to our hotel. Just head toward the city center and it’s nearby. Wow, we’ve already reached Tadotsu. I thought it would take much longer. This area is close to the sea—feels like a fishing port. But since this is the Seto Inland Sea, it feels very different from Kōchi’s Pacific coast. Totally different vibe. This side— Has more industrial-style buildings. Weather’s still the same. You can clearly see raindrops rippling in puddles on the road. 😁 You can tell the two uncles at the rental shop— They really took care of this bike. It’s way more stable than the one I rode yesterday. That one felt like it was going to fall over any second. From here, we’ll gradually move away from the sea. We’ve already covered half the route! Back on a road full of countryside vibes again. Keep going straight, then turn right. Turn right, then turn left. Now turn left. Whoa! Did I see that right? That bridge ahead is super steep! Definitely need to use power assist here. I’ve been using eco mode the whole time until now. There’s a broken glass bottle on the road. There are actually several special temples nearby. Like Kaigan-ji Temple. But we probably don’t have time to visit them. Next, we’ll enter a tunnel. There’s a small island over there with a building on it. Not sure what that is exactly. Once we turn at the next junction, the mountain climb begins. I’m going really slowly now. That interesting building by the sea earlier is called “Tonkyū Shrine”? I think that’s how it’s pronounced. Could’ve gone down to check it out, but it’s already 9 o’clock. Gotta make good use of time. This stretch is uphill. There’s a mountain climb in the middle of the route. We need to conserve both energy and battery. This path doesn’t go straight to the temple—it leads to a parking lot halfway up. From there, you can either walk or keep riding. You can choose to walk or ride up. But in the end, you’ll have to park the bike. 😂 There are roads on both sides… which one is correct?
