Cycling in Japan | Kyoto to Hokkaido part 1
hi everyone so today I woke up in Mayuru which is in uh Kyoto basically Kyoto prefecture and uh yeah there is a long ride ahead i plan to ride to Sapuro so basically I came here by a ferry first from Saporo to Otaro this was close to 40 kilometers and uh yeah then took a ferry yesterday came here you can see I slept in this kind of mixed dormatory room it has uh basically 10 beds in this room uh but it was all for me yeah I guess it’s not a popular tourist spot and also it’s after a golden week which means uh Japanese also have kind of finished their travels for now basically today’s plan is to ride about uh 90 kilometers i will go to Turuga and it’s going to be a sunny day according to weather forecast so I think it’s going to be good anyway see you on the road just started riding so of course they’ll admire it’s interesting how the atmosphere is so different so different from uh Hokkaido Sappo cuz of course uh the climate is warmer here so basically where I stayed yeah it was really beautiful place i mean very clean and organized and uh cheap it was about uh 4,000 yen a night so yeah I I liked it well maybe especially because I happen to be alone in the dormatory room but uh yeah overall nice so I would recommend and right before coming out I had some uh breakfast that I bought uh just last evening what I really like about this place is that the nature is so different in sense that uh I’m uh originally from Estonia and in Japan I’m living in Saparo Hokkaido so basically the climate is quite similar between uh Saporo and Estonia but uh in this part of Japan in Kyoto the climate is really different it’s something that’s somewhat maybe exotic to me I would say so yeah I’m uh really enjoying it [Music] there are several strings together yeah this is one of the main things to see in my opinion just so beautiful and so well organized there are some uh cool rice fields here yeah it’s a nice place some beautiful first rice fields ready to feed the Japanese people wow a hotel here looks cool the view must be great but yeah there is a tunnel ahead now this is uh something that uh probably most people who have been cycling in Japan don’t like because uh quite often it’s uh very narrow and uh dark and dangerous let’s see how it goes but as you can see there is not much space i turn my backlight on hopefully they can uh see me [Music] wee heat and another strain and what have we got here wow nice i really like this kind of countryside atmosphere in Japan i wouldn’t say I want to leave in here because I do like to see people also but uh yeah it’s still very good here you can see my bicycle yeah it’s not too heavy but uh still I think that bag is close to maybe 8 kg something like that i mean their air back the front is maybe three to four plus the extra stuff a few kilograms so yeah maybe in total about 15 kg extra possibly not too bad but uh yeah actually I came here because of this let’s take a glimpse inside it’s really well maintained yeah very beautiful well honestly this place looks just great the flowers look a bit wilted already so I guess it’s the end of the season for these flowers we’re a bit late this time but nevertheless a beautiful place so this is kind of my lunch can uh see some yogurt tuna mayonnaise and chicken i will enjoy back on the road stomach is full enough well the thing is I think while cycling I need to eat around uh maybe four times a day unlike my usual three times a day because I can’t eat uh too much at once otherwise I’m going to throw up when I’m riding or just feel sick maybe so yeah I’m uh trying to not eat too much at once and just eat more often trying to Let’s see how it goes though just listening to one of my most favorite artists in Japan she’s at Taka yeah I like her songs a lot this is uh from 80s though so quite old music but I like I like that kind of old music some beautiful seaside view [Music] [Music] hey [Music] very interesting [Music] sink not even sure how it [Music] works there’s a [Music] railway ooh cool [Music] oh [Music] So beautiful so calming i mean uh wow there’s really a lot to see i want to stop every now and then but I can’t stop too often though because I need to make it to my next destination so basically I have booked all uh places where I’m going to stay because I was uh afraid I may not get a place if I don’t book in advance because some places are quite countryside in some sense like uh there are only a few options available and if uh those few options are going to be taken then it’s going to be a big easier you So yeah I have booked everything in advance and of course paid also so now I just need to make sure I will make it bought another yogurt and an ice cream i’m uh not sure what’s the taste really how it’s called but this is what it looks like it’s good [Music] heat heat [Music] [Music] oh hey oh [Music] according to my GPS about 47 kilometers to go i like how Driion clean up the moss from the roof i don’t know somehow it makes it look even cooler [Music] [Music] suruga this is where we are going and about uh 42 km more to go but first let’s see a shrine another one [Music] so we just finished seeing a few shrines in the city named Obama quite an interesting name I would say but actually before that there was a city named Oi so Japan’s cities have quite interesting names [Music] [Music] less than 14 kilometers to go sweet also it says it’s still 24° outside but it was about 29 today peak yeah quite warm but I like it now that’s a long tunnel definitely longest so far but at least there’s a safe [Music] path we have arrived to Suruga good morning everyone so it is basically day two and I’m in Turuga today I will go to Kaga which is about 85 kilometers away and yeah I just ate good breakfast and from convenience store and uh yeah this is basically where I stayed last night yesterday I noticed something was quite noisy now I know where it was and why it’s uh broken so yeah it’s sad because it’s only day two but I will figure out some ways to still film it while riding also and now it’s time to go see a shrine which is going to be probably something we are going to do daily yeah let’s get going [Music] oh yeah hey [Music] And another beautiful sign i mean just wow so much effort put into sculpting crafting building and maintaining [Music] [Applause] [Music] Let’s see where does it lead us oh that’s interesting and another temple Buddhist temple [Music] a beautiful clock tower in Kagosagi Park nice i’m feeling safer already okay I think we are done in Suruga very beautiful city i really enjoyed it i hope yours did as much as uh I showed you and uh yeah I think it’s time to go a bit late already i was uh looking around almost 2 hours so yeah actually it’s already noon so I almost need to eat lunch and uh yeah really I want to still uh make it to the other place when it’s not dark so yeah it’s now a bit uh too difficult probably but uh let’s see and just when I thought I can continue the ride without having to stop I see this beautiful I guess temple on my way so of course I have to see how it looks like a bit closer and I can’t miss sharing this with you right [Music] [Music] and this is my lunch so this is basically how I have been riding past like uh 10 kilometers just uh on this narrow path so when uh trucks are passing by it’s quite scary because uh when I look to the left well I’m afraid of height so yeah it’s a bit uh scary but I can’t keep it to the right too much also because uh of course uh I don’t want to get hit by any cars yes [Music] [Music] [Music] yokohama i was just listening to a song from uh Marita Katisato named Yokohama interesting uh coincidence I guess but I love the song so if uh that’s really the place then I’m happy to be here [Music] i don’t know how visible it is from here but I’m somewhere quite high so yeah no wonder but it’s uh quite crazy i’m uh so tired lord but also I noticed uh Japan is known for its cleanliness it’s not like I want to say that it’s uh not clean but I think it’s very clean in the cities but actually I saw tons of trucks everywhere on the road outside of cities so basically you can see something right uh here and uh someone left their stuff on this pen also so yeah it’s not everywhere so clean but uh of course uh it’s not like people are coming here all the time to see what’s going on here so I’m not saying it’s excuse to have a truck here but but uh yeah I guess they are more concentrating on uh areas or places where people are actually more or less often spending time yeah time to continue i hope the uphill will end soon and I guess then it’s going to be downhill i hope so let’s go this is how high I have come i’m so tired [Applause] the worst part riding in the tunnel where it’s quite dark and uh right now there are no cars but I’m sure some will come soon i can already hear Heat up here heat okay the car’s bus i mean soon some more will come but I need to speed up to get out of here quickly and there are many such tunnels where there is no real bicycle path so yeah it’s it’s quite bad found uh some place maybe it’s going to be interesting there isn’t much time to stop but it’s right on the way oh that’s pretty cool [Music] i’m not so good at it there was a descending part also but uh I don’t understand how it was so short now it was again going uphill it’s just crazy i hope it’s going to get to more plateau so at some point it’s getting quite tiring I would say but uh the nature is beautiful so that’s [Applause] Bye good luck on your journey it’s a beautiful street how the trees have been planted and flowers around them also I like such traditional Japanese houses but I’m surprised to see there are actually quite many that are new enough i guess uh it isn’t a complete truth that uh there are no people living in countryides that uh country sides are completely empty i guess uh much emptier than uh it used to be but still many up another Buddhist temple on the way very beautiful very well maintained very well organized and another one i guess it’s a shrine let’s see and another one i guess it’s a tempo there are really so many that I am uh going to be in big trouble time wise but uh because it’s right on the way then uh I just can’t can’t pass it so easily actually passed quite many already but uh yeah I just kind of have to choose randomly at least some of them to see a bit closer because it’s so beautiful [Music] i’m uh eating like a homeless person here in front of uh 7-Eleven but uh yeah just some bread with sausage chicken breast and an ice cream yep i will continue to enjoy this we are in Fukui but uh there is no time to stop really have to just ride through it still about 30 kilometers more to go and it’s past 6 p.m but uh looks like this city is big enough though there is a lot of life going on here people are hustling and puzzling getting dark but 22 kilometers more to go well what can I do have to keep riding anyway nice bridge so so know they know but yeah I like bridges the quality is probably not that great because it’s a bit dark already but better than nothing maybe there is a really nice park down there sadly can’t see that much but you get an idea so this is in Fuku well it’s going uphill so long already maybe it’s going to end soon it was crazy in the end of the day in darkness when I’m in Russ i’m so tired jesus Christ i’d have to keep going can’t stop now 17 kilometers more to go in this dark forest jeez i hope no wild animals are going to come okay well today’s not normal and actually it’s darker than it looks in the video so it’s crazy i have no idea what’s going on reached the city well kind of 3 km more to go to my destination it’s crazy dark and I’m crazy tired about uh 20 kilometers riding in complete darkness all I have is my bicycle light but uh it’s clearly not enough because I was able to see maybe like uh 10 m ahead of me and that’s about it but uh you know on one side there is a a river on the other side there is a mountain and I was already on a mountain or whatever i think it was two mountains because there were crazy climbs and then crazy descents so yeah it was uh quite crazy and uh I haven’t been drinking for a while so finally I can uh get something to drink also but yeah this kind of experience is not something I was looking forward to also some routes that Google Maps recommended me were just crazy it’s uh I don’t know unbelievable i have a I have not been so tired for a very long time i even felt like queuing up almost of course I shouldn’t but was really really crazy and do you know what’s the worst part my bicycle light just died i mean I got very lucky that it didn’t die when I was up on the mountain because then I would have seen nothing good morning it’s uh third day and uh yeah basically it’s going to be raining today according to weather forecast quite a lot so yeah I am uh prepared in sense that I have some rain clothes but at the same time it’s 28° so I’m going to be sweating a lot but yeah anyway sadly we don’t have much time to look around in this beautiful city where I stayed but uh we have many days ahead so I’m sure we will see many nice views but as it is not raining right now it’s time to get going and use this chance to get as far as I can kind of so yeah see you on the road because gladly it’s right now at least tailwind then uh rain is also going to come from behind probably but damn it’s hot in those rain gloves and it’s 28° nice fields here it’s countryside so yeah it’s full of such vegetable and grain fields and so on it’s like paradise even though it’s a temple but it’s just so exotic and so well made i’m so satisfied and it’s raining not too much yet i hope it’s not going to get worse but uh enough to get wet found another beautiful temple on the way i don’t know what’s with me i just can’t pass but uh well for now I’m in schedule so why not i just need to make sure I stay in schedule to not be late like yesterday but look at everything those sculptures statues wow another amazing site posing with a beautiful Japanese flag this is truly spectacular this is true work of art look at those carvings wow i also want to pose with a Japanese flag and the horse spot I guess someone has a really beautiful I don’t know how to even call it fence garden i mean it’s like a fence of roses cool and another temple there are so many i’m honestly surprised but looks so beautiful that again I can’t miss it so a quick quick peek the same horse i wonder what does it mean why a horse it’s made out of glass well that’s the first didn’t see any made out of glass so far but it looks quite new modern and here is my lines some uh chicken and vegetable on it then uh yeah some kind of chicken cutlet with cheese and milk cream crawl from Hokkaido where I’m coming from why not and of course something for stomach [Music] i’m on the bridge the wind is so strong I can barely ride [Music] oh for some reason always when It’s the end of the day i have to ride up some mountain or something like that as you can see yeah it’s it’s not fun i have like uh 15 kilometers more to go so it’s still light which is good while I’m uh pedaling up I think it’s good time to finish i will be catching my breath at the same time but yeah anyway so right now it’s been 3 days in average it’s about uh maybe 85 80 to 85 kilometers a day well to me it’s already something that I have never done i have done uh two days in a row both were close to 100 but uh still three days in a row is something new today I expected a lot more rain according to weather forecast so it’s good that it was a lot less but uh I’m just surprised that okay I’m just surprised that the weather forecast is this much wrong all the time but uh yeah okay more more incline as expected but uh anyway I I liked this ride so far a lot yesterday evening was I would say quite painful i was uh about to give up at some point well of course I wouldn’t uh give up completely but uh well the place where I had to go was booked already and uh yeah uh check-in time was until 9:00 p.m so I was just wondering if I can really make it is it really worth uh pushing my limits well actually I made it half an hour early even but yeah it’s crazy dark unbelievably dark but uh anyway I managed somehow and uh yeah whole time was pretty good of course it’s been tiring but uh I really enjoyed this ride a lot so far there was a lot to see beautiful trees or bushes anyway there was a lot to see and sadly of course I couldn’t stop everywhere I would have wanted to stop because otherwise I could never make it because it’s not only about making video in one or a few places but I need to complete this ride in certain amount of time it’s limited so yeah it’s uh it’s no joke but I’m sure there was still a lot to see and uh we have many days ahead so I hope there is a lot to look forward to but yeah no it’s also getting a bit dark already so I guess see you in the next video take care this is how high I am already and it keeps going higher [Music] there it is finally looks uh very fancy but it wasn’t actually expensive maybe I just got lucky

There are so many shrines, are they always this empty? They really look like movie sets without people.
Riding on highways feels a bit scary, especially for bicycle riders. They're more vulnerable and don't really have alternative paths like off-road tracks?
I see you never miss protein in your meals 🙂 I think it's cycling that keeps your endurance strong.
At night, I find the vibe quite scary, being alone on empty streets. Maybe you have gotten used to it?😯 Did you ever wish you have a company while travelling? like your friend in Estonia!
Cycling right after a heavy meal isn’t ideal, it can upset your digestion and lead to nausea or even vomiting. It’s better to keep your stomach only half full and choose light, easily digestible foods or liquids. Also, take short breaks during your ride; it eases the strain on your body and helps maintain stamina.
