ENVEを日本の美で染めたい!カスタムペイントの旅【奥出雲・足立美術館】

Good morning. I’m doing well. It’s a bit chilly. It says it’s 16 degrees. We’re in Okuizumo, Shimane Prefecture—deep in the mountains. It’s a little cold. Did you come by bike? Nope, we came all the way by car today. I wanted to come by bike, but it just wasn’t possible. We’ve got something more important to do today. We’re in a bit of a pinch. Trying a bit too hard to sound cheerful. What do you mean? They told me to paint the ENVE Melee freely. Just go ahead and paint it however I want. Complete freedom. And maybe, just maybe… It could even be shared in the U.S. or worldwide. It might go global. I’ll be Takashi of the world. It’s either Takashi Murakami, or me. Murakami Takashi. Takenoshita Takashi. Since I’m painting the Melee, the design… I might have to storm into America. It’s possible. We need to show a Japanese essence. Bring out our identity as Japanese. To tap into that— We’re starting here in Okuizumo. At the Tatara and Sword Museum. To re-learn Japanese culture— And craftsmanship. To touch the soul— Even if it’s a bit superficial. It says ‘Land of Myths and Tatara’ here. Tatara and swords. We’re hoping to find some inspiration here. Something to rival Damascus. Something to rival Damascus steel. Tatara craftsmanship— Japan has Tatara. I see. See what? That’s a very flat-bottomed boat. It helps stabilize heavy loads. Designed to be pulled along a river. Flatter shapes are more stable, right? Yes, they are. This shape makes it easier to move even in rivers. Especially in shallow areas. Looks like traces of iron. As if they scattered iron sand for the display. This one is really interesting. From the Nara period, it seems. A kind of reconstruction, I guess. I’m quite drawn to this. They used a huge amount of charcoal. 570 kg for 263 kg of iron sand—more than double. No wonder Japan’s mountains became barren. Princess Mononoke would be furious. That’s how much charcoal they used. Was that what Mononoke Hime was about? She got mad when the trees were cut down. Oh, right, that’s what happened? Yeah, it took that much charcoal to make iron. And they only got 100 kg of iron in the end. And they just left it outside like this, so maybe— It’s not considered that valuable. Yeah maybe they’re not that interested. But the important part was probably taken— The slag or something. They used shells—so sparkly and beautiful. Looks like chopsticks. The top part has that vermilion lacquer feel. This finish looks easy to paint. Easy to paint? I didn’t want to hear that! But this one— Looks like they used computer data to make cut masks. Rejected! What are you even saying? That’s tamahagane steel! It kind of looks like a meteorite. ? a meteorite It’s cool, but— How do we apply this to a bicycle? Is this really going to work? It’s pretty cool. You think it’s cool? Don’t you think so? These kinds of patterns. And the wood grain too. Apparently, making springs was hard in ancient Japan. See this cherry blossom part? That part acts like a spring. Just like a pair of tweezers. Is this a matchlock gun? Yeah, it’s a matchlock. They say the screw structure at the back was complicated. But we can’t see it clearly here. That’s a gun, right? Yeah, it’s a gun. This one was imported too, right? Yes, but Japan didn’t just import it—they improved it. Japanese matchlocks are highly rated worldwide. They’re known for their precision. Apparently, they’re used in competitions too. Kinda like our current situation. Yeah, exactly. We barged in. This is the original kind of invasion. Something came from America— We messed with it here— And sent it back over there. But it wasn’t originally from America. It came from Portugal first. From Europe. America doesn’t have much history, after all. You’re gonna get in trouble for that. Don’t blue and red colors show up well? And yellow too? Is that from iron? The color probably changed due to oxidation, but it’s beautiful. Blue, red… If we do it, it would be with candy paint. Better take some photos. Already getting ideas. But it’s hard to capture it perfectly. So, how was it? Honestly, didn’t find much. Nothing useful? The exhibits were nice, though. But nothing that could be used for painting? It was kind of plain. The best takeaway would be— The Okuizumo soba map. Shall we head to the main event? Adachi Museum of Art? There’s bound to be something here. Please, let there be something! One of Japan’s most iconic artists— Yokoyama Taikan. Let’s draw on Taikan’s inspiration. But first, some soba? If we had come by bike, it would’ve been too far. Really? I came as a day trip though. Still, it’s pretty far, right? I thought it was closer to the neighborhood. First time eating soba here. Even though I’ve been to Izumo many times. And this is Okuizumo soba. Apparently, it’s different from Izumo soba. Izumo soba has a seafood-based broth. It’s a bit sweet. This one uses local soba flour— And a binder like yam or something. Seems like they use yam. 100% soba flour, no blend. Looking forward to it. I heard the soba-yu here is rich and delicious. Looks like a train station. Yeah, it’s a station. Castle of Sand You’re really excited. Super excited, yeah. It really is a station. Definitely a station. Here’s the soba place. A proper station soba shop. A train came! So it really does stop here. Did they just deliver soba to the train? They did, right? Didn’t expect that! The diesel engine is really loud. I want to visit that spot— The one with the switchback. Where trains climb steep slopes. Do they still run that? Was that the train we just saw? Whoa- Can I eat now? Finally, the soba we’ve been waiting for. Kama-age soba. Apparently older than chilled soba. Pour in the dashi soup. Here’s the soba-yu. Not sure how much to pour… I’ll go light. Let’s eat. Delicious! But a bit weak. That’s my fault. Still, it was really good. That was amazing. Wait, this really was a train station? It totally was. A train came, after all. Honestly— This place is worth cycling to. Totally! And— There are still more soba shops around. Tons of them. We need to start checking them off the soba map. And there’s also the mysterious grave of Izumi Shikibu. One of those graves that exist all over? Yeah, they’re everywhere. That was awesome. I want to come here by train too. Shall we go to the next place? There’s more soba to explore. It was so good. I even drank the whole soup. That might’ve been a first for me. It was thick and rich. Even the cooking water was delicious! Sorry for all the detours, but— we were kind of drawn toward the sake. We had no choice but to stop. There’s even a hot spring stand nearby. Are we taking some back with us? What are we supposed to do with it? That bucket’s too small for a bath. Are you supposed to drink it? But over here— it’s sake time. We at least have to take a look. No choice really. It’s part of the sake brewery. Lots of great info here. Okuizumo is seriously cool. And they’ve got souvenirs too. These soba buns are made with local buckwheat. They’re legit. Made right here in Okuizumo. I’ve got some too. For the podcast—yeah Yeah, from this place. Remove this That gradient is beautiful. Totally usable as a sample. Yeah, I like it. We finally made it. The journey of Yokoyama Taikan. Total coincidence it’s showing now. And it’s packed! On a weekday, too. We probably can’t film past this point. They’ve got Rosanjin’s works too. I actually bought a book on him. He’s fascinating. Looks like we’ll learn a lot from this. Yeah, definitely. Photography is allowed in the garden. This is what you wanted to see, right? Is this the one you were after? Well, I did want to see this too, but… I’m more interested in the actual artworks. Trying to capture this in the frame… In the frame? Seems hard to reflect this in the Melee’s frame design. You can’t just give up, you know. If you give up, that’s when the game ends. You were thinking of cycling here just to see this, right? Yeah, I really wanted to visit. I came up to the entrance last time. You passed right by, didn’t you? Brings back memories. I didn’t think it looked like this at all. Finally got to see it. There’s not even a single weed. They must maintain it every morning. The surrounding mountains… …blend right into the landscape. It all feels unified. That’s actually done on purpose. Apparently they even own those mountains. They designed it all with that in mind. I saw that on a program—maybe NHK. Yeah, the mountains and the garden merge perfectly. You can’t even see where one ends and the other begins. I’m beat. We really looked around thoroughly. To be honest… I think I’m even more confused now. No way! Didn’t you get any hints? Tons, actually—maybe too many. Isn’t having too many hints a good thing? I guess so… Now I just have to choose among them. But my skills aren’t exactly top-notch. Honestly, I’m pretty nervous. Feeling more pressure than ever. Feels like it’s finally time. We really don’t have any time left. There’s nothing more we can do at this point. Yeah, I guess you’re right. We seriously don’t even have a month left. We’re heading out somewhere soon, remember? We’ve got that mountain biking trip too. Well, I can stay behind if needed. Yeah, I could just stay and watch the shop. No way, I don’t want to miss it. Well, that’s pretty much a wrap. Turns out you can get by even without riding a bike. Wait, what do you mean? We didn’t ride at all today, did we? Today was just about choosing the colors. So what am I supposed to do? I think that’s about it for this video. Yep, that’s a wrap. And another day just slips away… Now that we’ve released this, people are going to start googling Yokoyama Taikan. Wondering what inspired the design? They’ll get curious. Now what? I guess that’s it. Shall we head home? Man, I’m exhausted. I don’t really wanna go home yet. Yeah, same here. That’s all, folks. Bye.
