In order to understand this place , it is very important to first know its history.At the end of World War II, all Hateruma Islanders were forced to live here in Minami Kazumita by military orders. At the time, the area where they were evacuated was contaminated with the infectious malaria disease.Naturally , almost all of Hateruma Island’s residents were infected, and one-third of the islanders lost their lives.Forget Stone of Hateruma Island at the time. The population is 1671 people. Of these, 552 people died. This is the place where principal Shikina of Hateruma National School held entrance ceremonies and classes as an open-air classroom. In response to an attempt to continue education in the evacuation area, the military ordered forced evacuation. However, the malaria epidemic was canceled and many of the children lost their lives. Principal Shikina, who had his evacuation canceled at his own request, quietly carved these words when he returned to the island: Residents of Hateruma, do not forget this stone. There is nothing we can do about this sad history, but we can convey it to you in this way. It seemed like he was saying something melancholy .
