So schlimm hatte ich Ubud nicht erwartet – Mit dem Rad auf Bali 🇮🇩

After 25 years, no, 27 years, I’m back in Bali. or do they say in Bali? at least in Bali. but this time with a racing bike. and I’m curious to see how the island has changed. A lot will have changed, I’m already shocked at how much is going on here. That’s not how I remember it. but it was a while ago too. and we’ll take a look at the whole thing. I know a few people who come here every year to cycle. So far I haven’t developed any connection to any tours. But I’m also at the epicenter here. It’s no wonder either. Here in the south it’s like a fair anyway. Here around Denpassar. and Kuta Legian. Oh! I should have turned left. Let’s go. It just goes on and on here. So you just have to look for the quiet corners, like everywhere else. We don’t have nice routes everywhere. and today we go to Ubud. I lost my heart there then. Not because of love, but because the city was so beautiful. The place was so sleepy back then. It was an artists’ village. But that seems to have changed completely. So I’ll probably be shocked. but I do it to myself. I’m going up, also north of Ubud. There are also beautiful scenic corners there. Let’s see how the weather holds up, because it’s been raining constantly the last few days. It was bad and not much happened. I was also sick for the first two weeks. Now things are slowly moving again. Everything wasn’t optimal. but today we fight our way through. we face the things that come. and I hope it will be a nice video. definitely have fun with it. You have to be extremely careful here, it’s like Vietnam or the Philippines. There are no rules. There is no order. It’s just chaos. But orderly chaos. Everyone knows what they have to do. Only the Frankenpedaleur has not yet adapted. But that’s coming, that’s coming… I haven’t driven here that much yet. Every Asian country has its own transport structure. and I still have to get used to the Balinese one. Hello! Hellooo! Everything is not that easy. At some point you just have to squeeze through. So, I’m now just before Ubud. after a quick drive here. Pretty busy. Now let’s go into the town. I was here before when I visited the monkeys. and even then it was bad. and I wasn’t even really in the town, just on the edge. Now I’m excited, but I suspect it won’t be any better in town. Let’s take a look at it. and roll through. Then a little further north. So through Ubud. and there will be beautiful rice fields there again. That’s where the real Bali actually begins. not here, where there is all the noise and traffic. but that’s just part of it. so we’ll take it from me. and now we’re off to Ubud. So, here we are in Ubud. As expected, all hell breaks loose here. The last time I was here was in the last century. It was a sleepy and cozy place. with little traffic. nice pubs where you could listen to live music in the evenings. could chill out, but this has now become a tourist hotspot. Shops and restaurants everywhere. and hotels and whatever everything. Yes, okay, there are people who like that. I don’t like it. I don’t need that. but I wanted to show it. That’s Bali too. Everyone always imagines it to be so romantic. so great. That may be the case in some corners. But I’ll just exclude the southern peninsula from this. So let’s roll through and take a look. At the end of the video I will show a few more scenes from the monkey forest. I was there once separately. and it started raining heavily even after leaving the forest. So I did well. Today it still looks stable. but it can change at any time. But now I’m here and it’s already too late. and now we have to focus on traffic again. because everything is not that easy here. Ok, let’s move on! Yes, exactly, here is the turnoff to the left to the monkey forest. It goes down the mountain to the left here. and we drive straight into town. It’s also a bit tricky here. You don’t even know where they want to go. and who has the right of way here. But here it is relatively free. so let’s move on. Now let’s come here to the center. To the center of Ubud. I’m excited. I don’t think I recognize anything anymore anyway. but let’s see. We’ll look at it, as I said. Oh! You can’t go straight here. Once here to the right. Back then I lived in some kind of homestay for 6 D-Marks a night. German marks, so that would be €3.- That was really cool. It was a t-shirt shop. And out the back were the rice fields. there were the rooms with balconies. And we had a big lizard in the room that was up in the rafters of the roof. He always looked down on us. But we only discovered this after three days because the crook never moved. And that was really cool. It was really nice with a view of the rice fields. Sat on the balcony in the morning. There was the same breakfast every day. but that didn’t matter. There was fried egg with banana and toast. but it worked. This is now the parallel street to the main street. It’s a bit quieter here. Even freshly tarred. Dogs everywhere too. You probably have to pull up there and turn left twice. Then you come back to the main street. Because it was a one-way street. Every now and then small temples. like here. right in the middle…although that wasn’t a temple at all. There was one here, I think. such little bamboo houses. shops. Well, as you imagine in tourist places. So, I’ve already turned left and it’s a one-way street again, so I have to turn left again. I’m now driving back in parallel. but that is the main street in question, which was impassable earlier. where I had to take the parallel route. So, let’s drive through Ubud from top to bottom. Let’s take a look at everything. nice shops. where no one is ever inside and I wonder how they survive. There are also clothing stores in my town where there is never a customer. some of them are closed too. Nobody can shop there. Most people always go to markets anyway. and buy some cheap t-shirts there. but somehow I never see anyone in these boutiques. Maybe it’s enough for them to sell something once a day. then it’s already worth it. Yes, all kinds of clothing stores. Pottery, jewelry. Clothing again. Clothing. Here again jewelry. Clothing. then figures. And Ubud is also known for its wood carvings. If I remember correctly, that was in the north. Where does it go from here?, it also goes somewhere else here. I’ll have to explore later. Well, that was somehow in the north, I remember. there were all these wood carvers on the outskirts of town. I even bought figures there back then, and I still have them today. They’re standing around in my living room. Maybe I’ll see them then. I want to go there anyway. then I can show them too. These are really nice things they produce. But here in the center I haven’t seen anything like that. They are more on the outskirts of town. But if you ever come to Ubud, you can take a wooden figure with you. there are also small ones. I took such big ones with me back then. I don’t even remember how things worked with the airline back then. I arrived at the airport with 4 or 5 additional large figures. wrapped in newspaper. they then went onto the conveyor belt. with a label. and were then passed off as normal suitcase goods. and arrived in Frankfurt again on the conveyor belt. would be unthinkable today. You’ll probably have to pay €500 in bulky luggage fees and whatnot. is weighed and measured straight away. Now everything was problem-free with Singapore Airlines. I also had way too much with me. I had 25kg free. and still had a huge hand luggage suitcase. This one had 12kg instead of 7kg. was totally bloated. Nobody was interested either. and an additional bag with all my electronic equipment. Everything was easy, but it depends on the airline. Temples everywhere left and right. The temples are beautiful, but at some point you get tired of them. According to the motto: If you have seen one temple, then you have seen all the temples. but you have to see it. So, me now next to the monkey forest. and here the monkeys jump around on the street. steal the offerings that people left here. And there’s one on the street. Yes, some of them break out here. because the forest is here. but they don’t care. he’s rummaging around here. The monkeys are of course an attraction here. everything is photographed. you save the entrance fee. you just need to get to the street here. They’re not afraid they are not afraid. This is already part of the monkey forest. beyond this chain here. you can’t go through there. The guards sit there. and then you can go for a walk here. is quite interesting. Cost…how much did it cost? I think 125,000 rupiah. which is approximately €7.-. Can be accepted. But you can also just walk along the edge here. then you also see a few monkeys. It’s just a nice little jungle to walk in. As I said, I also made a few videos of this and will show them afterwards. You can see the rascals there. how they always tease each other, chase each other or pull fleas out of their fur. The colleague here is also sitting there completely relaxed. Yes, as you can see, you see the same thing over and over again. many many shops and so on and so forth. That’s why I’m now making sure that I continue to pave and pave my path. But they still have beautiful alleys that sometimes lead off to the left and right. Um… Here, Bali Logistics by the way. here on the front of the scooter. Here they have…ah, I was late. There are always alleys with lots of shops. But okay, I’ll see if I can get to the north now. and show something else. What do we have here? Pasar Ubud. Is this the local mall? No idea. Um…yeah… where does it go? I think the computer wants to send me this way, so we’ll just drive this way. Yes, it is very touristy here. This has nothing to do with the Ubud from 1998 or 1999 that I still know. My goodness! Now the New Year will soon be here on April 29th. That’s also a peculiarity here. This is only available in Bali. But I don’t want to give too much away. In any case, there will be a nice celebration in advance with parades. Oh there was…I smelled durian. There was probably durian somewhere there. it was in the air. In any case, there will be nice parades then. with costumes and music. but April 29th is a very special day. and I have to look at what I’m doing that day. I have to make a decision. Yes, this Luwak coffee is also very well known and famous. I’ve already made two short videos of these sleeping cats. or civet cats. which digest this coffee bean. and then poop again. and then they are ground and sold to you as coffee. Expensive stuff. I tried it, but well… it didn’t taste much different. it’s just such a hit here. But I’ve also heard bad stories that the critters are forced to eat it. So they don’t look for it naturally. but they basically get it thrown in as the only food they eat. and are then forced to eat the stuff, well. This is the case with everything where animals are sold to people and put on display. That’s where they are exploited. Yes, a beautiful path here. so beautiful that we’ll end the video right here. Look! The rice farmer over here. somehow a completely hidden path. Sometimes Komoot is good for something. That it leads you down such paths here. because you’ll never discover them normally. However, there is also a lot of scooter traffic here. but what the heck. and also tourists walking around here, but also beautiful landscapes. Rice fields here, as I said. Ok, I’ll end the video here. because the battery is running low anyway. and I don’t feel like filming with the phone anymore. I’ll drive a little further anyway. and see what else comes next. Or maybe I’ll go back. I now depend on the weather. Anyway, thanks for watching. I’ll see you next time if I don’t make a fool of myself here. and then I wish you all the best. Take a look again at the next video here from Bali. Until then, ciao ciao!
