How to build bmx bike – Sunday Forecaster
do you want to know how to build up your
sunday forecaster complete bmx bike today i’m going to show you how to build up your sunday
forecaster complete bmx bike so like always i tell you everything that all the other shops are
not telling you about bmx bikes and all the tricks to get your bike on the road or on the
trails or to the skate park or on the streets so uh let’s get to it um if you just ordered a
sunday forecaster this is how you build it up i’m going to show you all the tricks that i show
my employees that um that just help me build bikes fast i can build a bike usually in about 15 20
minutes um but in this video it’s probably going to take a little bit longer because i’m going to
actually show you how to do it so uh let’s get to it so your bike comes in a box like this um it’s
pretty simple to to build up but you’re going to need a couple tools so i’m going to show you those
tools so first off you’re going to want a set of wire cutters uh maybe even needle not needlense um
some side uh side cutters maybe even a razor blade um or xacto knife uh you’re also going to
want an an hex head wrench or allen wrenches or this um but hang tight because there’s one
tool that can eliminate a lot of these tools um also you might need a adjustable wrench
or a crescent wrench which they call it um you also may need a 17 socket an extension and
a ratchet if you’re putting on pegs if you’re not putting on pegs you’re probably
just going to need the ratchet and 17 now here is the amazing tool we got the odyssey
multi-tool here so this one has almost everything you need in it um you need a pedal wrench which
is a really thin wrench to get inside those pedals and be able to tighten them uh this one comes with
it uh if you don’t have one of these wrenches you could always get a open-end wrench grind it down
a little bit but make sure it’s not it’s yours and not your dad’s um but that could get inside
there and do that or you can buy a pedal wrench from your local bike shop or here online at
stackbmx.com um you’re also gonna need the 17 socket which this comes with and this one comes
with all the hex head or allen wrenches you need from four five six and eight so this tool pretty
much handles everything you’re also going to need a a pump uh or gas station or anything like that
to pump up your tires um next this is the number one thing that all my employees forget um even you
guys probably forget is a trash can make sure you have a trash can um because you don’t want to be
doing the work twice and this is where a lot of my employees fail um because they’re know-it-alls
they think that they know everything about bmx they’re not willing to watch my experience show
them how to do it but you guys are way smarter than them so pay attention keep the trash can
and i’m going to show you why because as soon as you throw it away you’re going to throw it
right back in into the trash can you’re not going to put on the floor and do the job twice
u but i’m going to show you some more tricks that’s going to help speed up this process
um so uh uh let me grab a marker real quick so forgot to show you the top of this i mark
off this label i didn’t realize the label was on there but so you’re going to get a box and
it’s going to have a couple of these straps right here what you’re going to do is you’re
going to either use the wire cutters to cut it and then here is where the trash can comes
into play throw it right in the trash can you see how easy that was now i don’t even have
to pick it up again um if you have a razor blade a razor blade also helps notice how
i slid it in sideways and then pull it boom done oh shoot move this little tripod i’m trying
not to move the tripod cuz i got it set up for the camera where the bike will be and everything next
up notice that there’s staples on these boxes and these things keep it closed uh a lot of people
tear up the boxes and all that stuff um but the easiest way to do this is actually grab right here
by the actual staples and i lucked out that this thing isn’t even really closed so once we got it
closed or open i’m sorry u you’re going to lift it up lift it up lift it up like so first thing that
it comes with is the seat this is where people kind of jump all over they want to pull the bike
out and all this other stuff don’t do that what you want to do you want to take the sleeve off
your seat i’m going to throw it in the trash right there right in the trash can you see that
didn’t even go onto the floor next up so we got the seat post and seat if you want
to know more about this bike and the parts that come in it watch my explain and
review video and it’ll show you everything about this bike explaining all the parts
and what it does and everything like that um next you’re going to have the handlebars this
is where a lot of employees they kind of get lost they don’t know what to do when they get the
handlebars it’s super simple man i got this all figured out for you guys uh so most bozos mess up
the wire they hang it they do all kinds of weird stuff this is how simple it is make sure this
little thing’s up boom handlebars are there out of my way no problem now here’s the bike pulling out
of the box um notice how it’s facing the sprocket towards the bike rack um what you want to do is
actually flip it around and face the sprocket on the outside uh the reason why you want to do
this is because uh now you can see the sprocket you could get out the chain a little bit better
you can see all the bike and it just uh creates an environment where you’re working on something
all the time and it’s kind of all the always the same so it helps you kind of build and work a
little bit easier so so there’s a few little things in this box got an invoice so i’m going to
set this down and i’m going to lean it up against the bike rack next up is this box this usually has
a owner’s manual pedals reflectors other little things like that next up biggest thing that people
do as far as mechanics or backyard builders is they just leave the box or do whatever of the box
don’t do that what i like to do and this is from experience over the years is i actually like to
break this bike box down so i’m going to go on the other side and i’m going to pop this off and a lot
of you guys are going “why are you doing that?” oh i would just throw my trash in there and blah blah
blah the reason why i don’t do that is because if a part falls out and it gets lost inside the
box where i don’t even know and i’m too horny to build up the bike that little seat bolt clamp
that little brake bolt whatever it may be might be stuck in one of these flats and if i’m carrying
this box all around the yard or the garage and stuff like that that bolt might fall out and fall
in my garage and i’ll lose it but if i break the bike box down here and i shake it a little bit
i know if that bolt falls or is in there it’s going to fall right on my feet and i can find
it very easily so number one trick right there it does happen all the time um so keep that in
mind um i’m going to use this affinity wrench cuz i kind of like it i might switch it out with the
other one um as needed but this one’s pretty solid so what i’m going to do is i so i’m going
to put this on with no grease and you’re going to go “why no grease?” the reason why
i’m doing it with no grease right now is because is because i don’t want
the grease all over everything else and i could always put grease at the very end and speaking of that i forgot to
even grab my grease so that’s another thing you need is grease let me go grab
that real quick can’t believe i forgot it all right i was forgetting something so
just some basic grease you could use but we’ll use in a little bit all right so now you got
your seat and seat post in there pretty good uh you don’t want to seat post super high you
want to keep it medium because when it goes into the rack it’s going to want to fall down
and if you have the post high it’s going to make the bike lower so now that it’s up like that
looking pretty good um first thing is that most of you guys get horny and just want to build
up a bike right away blah blah blah blah blah uh the idea of building up a bike fast is having
a structure and moving through the bike so you don’t forget nuts and bolts uh you make sure that
everything’s tight and once you’re done you don’t have to go back and look through everything so i’m
going to help you out with that so next up this is where the wire cutters come in uh usually the
wheels are are mounted on i’m going to try it’s a little bit harder doing this and showing you
because most people just get on the other side of the bike which helps out a lot um if you cut these
zip ties too certain spot you could save them and use them for other stuff if you’re a hoarder
or just don’t have any and you could use some um so boom so there’s these little caps right
here on the wheels try to show you pull these bad boys off take any of these thing now
set the tire against the bike rack a lot of people don’t do that um it helps out a lot
when you’re building a bike a lot of people don’t know where to put stuff so handlebars
here front wheel there bike here you’re good sometimes i like to put the trash can right here
because it might it makes it a little bit easier so what i like to do is i like to start
from the front of the bike and then work my way back so what we’re going to
do is we’re going to just pop this packaging off these little fork pieces now
you got your stem right here you got your handlebars now this one i’m probably going to
use this out um wrench let me make sure you guys can see because this is pretty tight yeah
it is pretty tight let me let me slide it over so you can check this out maybe i’ll turn it
yeah i’ll turn it for you guys bet you can see better like this oh yeah it’s pretty good sweet
man that bike looks really black all right cool so what you want to do is you want to loosen
up these bolts both sides i’m not going to loosen them all the way i’m just going to
loosen them most of the way because they come they get kind of loose and you could just finger tighten them or remove
them let me get it most of the way probably should be wearing an apron but
whatever all right so you pull the cap off notice how i just loosened the bolts up and
i grabbed the cap and now the cap has all the bolts these are the little small things that
help you build the bike fast uh whereas other people would set it on the towner push the bolts
out and they go all over the place uh this way makes it way simpler so another thing is everybody
tries to grab the bars and we’ve seen some dumb comments on my instagram and youtube saying that
don’t tighten up the bars like this to hold them up like this and then tighten it down those guys
are knuckleheads uh they’re hard-headed they don’t listen and they just swear they’re right but the
problem with this is that now you’re holding this and then you’re focused on tightening this and
doing all that other stuff whereas you can let it stay down and here’s where the knuckleheads
kind of miss the understanding is that we’re not tightening it all the way down what you’re
doing is you’re just getting them close because this is where you’re fumbling you’re trying to
get these bolts on here while you’re holding up the bars and all that stuff this eliminates
it so what i like to do is tighten the bolts down see so i’ll i’ll tighten this down i would
say most of the way see that one’s acting up i think if the bolts not going in and it feels
really firm uh usually the bolts hitting the cap like this one is this one’s hitting the cap
a little bit i probably tightened it up too much see i can tighten this one up this
one’s the one that’s acting weird all right so if you have a problem like this
definitely take a look at it before do everything my luck the bolts getting stripped
somehow or it’s not threaded right and now i got to put a new stem on this thing which is
not going to be fun it would be my luck filming a video i did another video haven’t posted it
yet but kind of the same problem i kind of got all the way through it and then just ran into
a freaking big problem that kind of baldled up everything um made the video way longer i
don’t know i might edit it down i might yeah see so this thing looks kind of gummed up
from my looking at it so what i’m going to do is i’m going to hopefully see these
holes are big enough sometimes they’re not now what i’m doing is i’m putting in there
but i’m just going slow dude i don’t know this is why it’s sometimes better to take it to
a bike bicycle shop because then a professional can look at it rather than you just trying
to wrench on it and then maybe making it worse but i hope this helps all right so
it is getting a little tight right here so what i’m going to do is i’m going to loosen
up these bolts here and i’m actually going to bolt this front wheel on let’s see if you
can see it in the video let me let me try to pull it up for you check this out see if you
can see there pretty sure you can see yeah now you tighten up these bolts
make sure the little hook washers inside the little hole and then you can tighten it down this one’s kind of cool cuz you could use a hex tool to tighten it up so all right
once i got the front wheel on uh give me a second i was looking at this
that’s pretty bad lighting let me move this light real quick see if i can make the
light better for you guys yeah that looks way better all right sweet um let me grab this
other affinity tool um it’s kind of cool looks like scooter handlebars and they make
scooter handlebars if you want the tools let us know we can definitely get you one all right
so let’s see if we could get this in the camera more okay the bolts all the way at the
bottom so i’m just going to back this out now instead of leaving the tool on it
at the end where the threads were kind of acting weird i wanted to take
the wrench off and use my hands so all right let’s try this
again put the bars on like so now i’m going to what i’m going to
do is i’m going to screw this one in first dang i’m already sweating getting a workout from this bike all right
there we go that thing’s going nice oh look look at how i
got cut do any of you guys else eat your blood i do it all the time scabs
all that stuff if you’re a boy you probably do this uh if you’re a girl you probably think it’s
disgusting um if you think it’s disgusting uh you probably are a girl even though you think you’re a
boy but uh all jokes aside uh do what you will man it’s just all fun takes takes too long to go get
a napkin and all that other stuff look it’s almost dried up all right cool so we got these things
tightened down most of the way but we’re going to back them out leave them a little a little
loose all right so on the bars what you want to do is usually see how the fork’s kind of
crooked and the bars are a little crooked the bolts aren’t tight but we can hold the i’m not
going to get it perfect i’m just going to get it kind of close okay so so you can see what you want
to do is you want to put the bars pretty close to straight with the forks put them forward more if
you uh want to be like dan crook pull them back more if you want to be like sean butler um so
those are the kind of idea but majority of the riders they put them pretty close to straight
with the fork if you’re going to ride um it’s not too that crucial um so we’re going to go
ahead i’m going to tighten these up okay now here’s the crucial part um i am tightening them up
but i’m leaving a even gap on both sides but also too i’m not going to tighten these bars up all the
way what i’m going to do is i’m going to just keep them firm because once you tighten that down you
can actually squash the handlebars so instead of being round it’ll actually go oval and then if
you jump or something like that or you move the bar let me start over so it’ll squish the bar at
the oval and then when you jump or something or you tighten them all the way down or something
like that and let’s say you squished it you move it the bars into a different position and then
you clamp it down again uh most of the time this thing wants to jump back to where it was or if
you’re jumping or something like that you may think the bars are tight and as soon as you land
it might kick the bars back into that same spot um forever making it a nightmare for
you to get the bars in the right spot so if you’re having a problem with that
buy a new new set of handlebars and it should help you out quite a bit okay so
we got that on there uh notice how we did everything from the front so we’re going to
continue with that and work our way to the back all right so we got the front on uh we didn’t
put any air in it or anything like that but we got the brake cable brake cables here let me see i
might want to turn this to the side a little bit okay let me see if you can see the back brakes
oh yeah you can see that all right cool um so first off we like to i like to go from back
here kind of inspect it make sure the brake pads are hitting in the right spot um also make
sure that these little cables are inside there if they’re not they might be popped out uh just
put them back in make sure the cable’s straight um make sure the other side has a cable inside
of it um here’s a big problem that i see is that this cable is gets stuck right here sometimes
and you want it inside of here um here’s some paper we’ll just take this off so it looks a
little bit clearer for you so you’re going to run it up and now here’s a problem that most of
you people deal with is that on the back of the brake lever it has a little hole uh this barrel
adjuster has these little slots in it to line it up and you can drop this cable in there uh the
problem is is that you’re over here you have all these things on here and you go to put it in
and there is not enough slack for you to get the cable on you see that how you see how we can’t
get the cable on okay here’s the trick to it you’re going to pop these off again all right so
i kind of set you up so that you kind of thought you were going that way because that’s what most
you do so i can explain this and it just kind of makes sense all right so there’s a slot actually
let me grab that orange got one in my pocket um so there’s one bolt right here we’re going to loosen this thing up and
now if you look on the lever there’s a little slot right here and then on the top side there’s a
little hole so what you want to do is you want to put this cable right into that hole and then on
the lever you want to make sure all those lines are lined up and then you want to twist these
barrel adjusters and line them all up hold it with your other finger and then you can drop that
cable right in there now push it in there you can thread this thing back thread this thing all
the way down push the lever in run it back to the back back here make sure that’s inside of that
adjuster like we spoke pop that cable in there and then pop the cable on the other side make sure
they’re free make sure this thing is working good make sure all this stuff is working good
push back your lever to a comfortable position get your allen wrench uh snug it up um here’s a
little trick if you have problems with messing up your levers i keep mine slightly loose so that
if i crash it pushes it down it doesn’t break my lever and doesn’t bend it it just moves it uh
what’s cool about this is usually you don’t need tools and you can push it back and your session
isn’t ruined cuz you don’t have allen wrenches uh so kind of cool trick um next up is the stem
uh this one i am going to leave it loose because i’ll show you this is one of the things that we
do at the end but if you look at the bike majority of it’s built it’s almost ready to go there’s
just a couple more things um but i want to show you this technique um a lot of people building
bikes sometimes these things are kind of hard to uh take off the tapewise and i see a lot of people
scratch the bikes uh from using a razor blade or something like that but here’s a trick don’t go
in between it you want to go right on the edge of the cardboard and what that does is allows it just
to cut like so super super simple you don’t mess up your bike and you get the stupid papers off
so easy now let’s go to the cranks throw it on here throw it on here you ever uh hear that saying
when you hear your ear your ears ringing it means uh somebody’s talking [ __ ] on you um so
yeah my ear ear was ringing pretty loud quite a bit right now so uh whoever’s
talking [ __ ] thanks all right so we got that one over uh cool all right so
now your cranks are good the chain’s relatively tight your brakes are working
you got pedals wait you don’t got pedals where’s your pedals at they’re in that box
remember all right so let’s go over this box nice cool looking box same thing right you can go on the edge or whatever you
want to do hit it from the side boom got your owner’s manual get a chain guard i’m not going to show
you how the chain guard goes on because we’re going off-roading on this bad boy and uh yeah
we don’t need those if we’re going off-road and going big reflectors we’re not going to use these
all as well because we’re going to be going big uh off-road use you know that type of stuff the
usual all right next is the paddles yeah we’re going to be jumping over trucks uh jumping off
of buildings uh jumping over roads all that jazz trash okay so here’s reflectors and you might
have these reflectors you don’t want them on there i’m going to show you a little trick to
get them off no homo uh remember i don’t know if you’re old enough to know that but if you
are uh yeah they say now no diddy now which is pretty crazy um so there’s these little bumps
back here uh these little things hold it in so what you want to do is just push it it’s kind of
hard to show you but you’re going to kind you’re just going to push the pin like so and bam and
it’s going to p push the reflector right out so that’s what i’m going to do see if you can see
that there yeah there you go see it now just pops out now you have the odyssey pro pedals that come
in their packaging all right so that’s one this is two next one boom done next thing is a lot
of people will jump straight into the pedals but we got this zip tie right here and i don’t
want it to get lost and sometimes it’s hard to figure out how it goes so what i like to do is
i always like to put the zip tie in there and then make sure when i put it inside that the
the rest of the band is facing down or out of the way so what i’m going to do is i’m going to
do around here around the tube like so and then i can spin it and then tuck it underneath
the frame so i’m going to go up right here boom now i’m going to spin it took that
cable see where i put that cable now it’s loose you’re going to tighten it up
and then i’m going to push it all the way forward and put that cable downward so
so there you go got the pedals we got our grease yeah we got grease let me show you
these pedals real quick so these pedals the hardest thing for you guys is figuring out
which way they go uh always remember that the right pedal is regular thread and most of
the time it has a r right here on the pedal i don’t know if you can see that hopefully you
can see that let me let me see if i can zoom in be focused see that upside down r see the r
right there and then the left pedal has these little lines see those little lines on it so
that one’s the left one all right now zoom back out all right so what i like to do is i like to
just go a little bit on the edge right like so not very much don’t put a lot and then
all you got to do is put it on the side and swirl these around that’ll get good
grease on all of them all the way around and your pedals are ready to go on so we’re
going to put the left side down and then with the pedal what i like to do is i like to look
down and line up the pedal straight and then i don’t even use the pedal part i’ll just
spin the pedal cuz most of the time they’re pretty tight because once they break in they
loosen up yeah that thing’s almost all the way in and then i’m going to put
this one on the other side so uh yeah i closed the front door to
film this and all day it’s been dead and if you work at a bike shop
you know this every time you’re super dead you side close the door and all of
a sudden somebody’s at the door that’s exactly what’s happening right now but every time so when
you’re tight these pedals put them on there see how i like to kind of rotate the cranks to get it
tight once i get it most of the tight i like to change the wrench and place it on the crank arm
where i can push down cuz you get the most power when you’re going downwards so going downwards
and then see how this one’s up let me see this way this one’s kind of a weird angle so i can’t
go down yeah but it’s completely tight your pedals are on your brakes are working you’re all set um
what i’m going to do though is that i’m going to tighten these crank bolts as well so
just make sure that thing’s tight i’m going to use this king koopa one to
go on the side give me more leverage there we go okay remember too that these pinch
bolts do not hold these pinch bolts on the side do not hold that bolt in there uh
so you got to tighten this down what those do is they hold the actual crank arm
on the spindle so um yep there it is um bike’s pretty much complete uh let’s see if i
could air one of these up sit on the floor yeah you’re not going to see that this hose is a little
small um well you guys know how to pump with the tire i’m going to bring it down right
here let’s see if i can back it up all right spinning it threading this bad boy on i’m just going to air
up the front tire uh just so i’m going to lift it off the ground so that the tire bead doesn’t
bust off and i’m going to slowly pump it up keep an eye on the tire i did notice something i
did something you seen it in the video hopefully you call me out on
it leave a comment but i’m going to show you what i did right now and then i’m
going to fix it and show you which way to go all right so you want to air it up to about 35 psi loosen her up we’re almost done all right so i’mma throw it back up here again clamp this bad boy and we’re going to turn it cross over here all right so here’s
where i screwed up i wasn’t even paying attention can you guess see if
you can leave me a comment and guess what i did wrong before i take
the wheel off and tell [Applause] you pull this up a little bit more okay so
we got our tire on i forgot one thing too okay so see the tire it looks like an arrow
and it’s facing towards the back of the bike you want to turn the wheel around so
that the arrow is pointed to the front and then you want to put this back on and don’t
forget to drop these washers into that little hole tighten up the bolt tighten up the other side all right now the next thing i’m going to do is what
i forgot you always put the valve cap back on boom got that now i’m going to lower the bike and show
you a few things that you got to do in the very end okay so first off what i got to do is i got
to line this front wheel so let me see if you can even see this i don’t know i don’t think
you can see this right here no not even um so notice how it’s crooked actually what i’m going
to do this is what the first thing i need to do i’m going loosen these front bolts and
i’m going to put pressure down on this front wheel and then i’m going
to slowly snug up one bolt not even tight just touching do the other side
and then i’m going to go back a little bit tighter a little bit tighter go back to
the first one and then really good tight really good tight and then pull it up again and
then notice how it is still slightly crooked what we like to do is we like to hold the wheel
and then we turn it and we look down and it’s straight so now that it’s straight check the
tension on there um if your headset is loose like so sometimes i like to tighten these down cuz
sometimes these may make it feel like it’s loose um but it actually isn’t if you loosen up this
thing you could you could also straighten that out so i’ll actually show you how to do that in a
sec let me uh loosen these bolts or snug them up they’re like way loose so
tighten them up most of the way loosen it up loosen up that bad boy spin the
cap make it straight with the fork line it up snug that cap down and then i’m
going to tighten up these bolts right here just snug snug on the other side boom all right snug on the other side all right so now
those things are super snug i’m going to feel where i want the bars and the bars feel pretty
nice right there um this one you’re going to snug them back down but i’m not going to snug these
ones all the way down we’re going to let the customer tell us where they want it and put the
bars where the customer wants now we’re back to the seat post okay seat post um for me what i like to do is most
people put it on the post and stuff like that what i notice on those ones is that
the grease seeps out and it covers your c clamp with it we’re going to do it
and then it’s hard to get that grease the crack but boom see how that one’s there
what i’m going to do is i’m going to put it in there hey check this out this is i see a
lot of people what do you do with grease this is perfect what i do is i like to scrape
it off my finger right off the edge move it around if there’s too much or if it’s
getting back on your finger and you can get majority of it off let me lay this thing
down really quick i’m going to grab a rag right here rags nice should probably have one of these as one of your tools as well all
right so we’re lifting it back up and there’s a limit line right there so
this has to go at least into your frame and seat clamp to there um if you have it higher
than that you’re going to damage your frame damage your seat post maybe even get hurt
so don’t do that um sliding it down it’s a five slide it down right to that mark and you’re
going to put it wherever you want and then adjust it but we leave it tall at the minimum mark
like so because if a tall customer buys his bike i didn’t scratch a seat post and i don’t have to
buy him another seat post because his is scratched um yeah air up the back tire you should be good
to go but uh let me get down here so you guys can see me so yeah this is how to build a sunday
