ZLOČINI IZ SENKE 23 – PINK PANTERI i priča iz senke evropskog podzemlja

Dear friends, welcome to another episode of Shadow Crime. Tonight we will cover a story that stirred up the public at the time, that is, I can freely say the entire criminal population of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia when it happened. And not only the criminal population that lived mostly in emigration. A lot was written in our press about that event. And by God, it was also written in Western Europe, especially in the Fifth Republic, actually in France. The event is from 1983. Namely, on August 19, 1983 , in Cannes, two young men entered a jewelry store, which is actually the property of the famous chain of jewelry stores Cartier, and looked at the jewelry in a relaxed fashion as if they were customers. They were dressed like tennis players, as if they had come from a game of tennis from a nearby hotel. They nonchalantly tell the head saleswoman that they would like to buy a few pieces of jewelry . One of those young men said that he would buy jewelry for his girlfriend, that is, for his fiancee. And the other said in pure French without any accent that he actually came to buy a present for his grandmother for her birthday. And that he liked a brooch from the window of that famous jewelry store in Cannes. And of course, not only did they attract the attention of the head saleswoman, who was a beautiful blonde in her 30s, they attracted the attention of all the employees of that jewelry store. There were six of them in total, from the main boss, two security guards and three saleswomen. And what happens now? While the saleswoman who took it upon herself to respect these customers because they looked like that and were dressed like that because they were wearing expensive Cartier watches. They had matching gold Cartier sunglasses. They had the chains around their necks that were visible and recognizable to the skilled eye of the saleswoman that they were from that particular store, actually from that chain of stores, that they were Cartier’s. And she said to herself, “These guys can be really good customers.” She opened the brooch to show this guy with a French accent. And she asked the other young man to wait while she went to show him the rings that she would recommend to him for his betrothed. And what happens now? She heard from that young man who didn’t have a very pure French accent, but somehow as she said: “He spoke with a Russian accent.” She heard him just say, “Ma’am don’t be in too much of a hurry because this is actually a robbery.” And when she turned to see exactly what was happening, she saw in front of her the barrel of a Colt pointed right at her chest. And the young man told her: “Don’t be afraid. Go to your boss and just be calm and don’t panic and nothing will happen to anyone.” And everyone was astounded, they were searched, which is normal. They moved towards another young man. And he took out a Colt from his sports tennis bag and said: “Yes, this is a robbery, keep calm.” He placed the bag on the counter and took out a bundle of police handcuffs with his other hand. There were exactly seven pairs of handcuffs. And he ordered everyone to face the wall and put their hands behind their backs. While he was doing the work of controlling how everyone would face the wall of the store, a young man who spoke with a Russian accent went and closed the door with an automatic lock so that no one from the side, from tourists or potential customers, could enter the store. And what do they do next? When they tied up a total of six workers of the famous jewelry store Cartier, they ordered them to enter the boss’s office. They locked it. They went back to the sales area and opened the jewelry display cases one by one and picked them all up. They left absolutely nothing. They also took the brooch that was supposedly liked by the grandmother of the guy who spoke with a French accent. Before leaving, they did not forget to go to the main camera and take the video tape from it so that no video remains. After that they started laughing like crazy. And as the shop workers described : “They were laughing as if they came from hell itself.” Of course that laughter was supposed to be a warning to the workers not to take any action. And of course they didn’t do anything. They were locked up there in the boss’s office. And when these two guys picked up the jewelry, they put it in those sports bags. They put them on their backs. They walked right out of the jewelry store onto the Cannes Promenade and blended into the crowd of tourists and walked away. That was exactly at noon. At 12:10 a.m. a bunch of police came because the boss found the alarm button there in his office. He pressed the same button and the police came to the jewelry store and immediately began to search is conducting an investigation. The entire European and world press wrote about this, because at that time it was the biggest robbery of jewelry that was carried out, not only in that year, but in post-war Europe, it was worth 25 million dollars at that time on August 19, 1983. We have to admit that even for this time it is a huge figure, and for that time it was at least 5 times. And now, of course, they wrote about every piece of jewelry that was stolen back then from that famous robbery. They wrote about the famous necklace whose smallest piece of jewelry had 33 carats. You can imagine how valuable she alone was. However, what was most impressive was written about a lighter that was in the shape of a panther, a panther in a jump, which was encrusted with diamonds and had pink rubies in its eyes. And when Commissioner George came, the commander of the Anti-Gang Brigade, who dealt exclusively with the fight against organized banditry in France, he brought a bunch of pictures of potential robbers and showed them to the workers of that jewelry store so that they might recognize someone. And when they encountered these two guys, all of the workers said: “Yes, that’s them.” And George Mores knew that he was actually dealing with his old acquaintances again, actually with guys whom he had never met, unfortunately. And who were these old acquaintances of his? They were Novica Živković Steve and Bruno Sulak, guys who were considered the best robbers of jewelry stores in Europe at the time. And after this robbery, the Anti Gang Brigade went hunting for the Pink Panther. And since then, every robbery that was done in Europe, and related to what they then called the Jugo gang team that did those robberies all over Western Europe, and especially in France, Belgium and Germany, was called the Pink Panther operation. It was actually the beginning of the creation of a legend about a group of guys who never had a leader and who were never part of a gang, but they were called the Pink Panthers. And now we will talk about the origin of the legend of the Pink Panther gang. Actually we will talk about Novica Živković Steve, Bruno Sulak and Zdravko Gver. These are the guys who actually founded a special style of robbery in Western Europe, and I can safely say in the world. And what will be remembered as an anecdote after this famous robbery on the Cannes promenade is the statement of the youngest saleswoman who said: “Yes, those are the guys, and the only thing I regret is that they didn’t rape me.” To George’s question, did they use force? They all said: “No, they didn’t use any force except tying us up because they showed their weapons. But on the way out, one of the bandits opened the barrels and showed the store manager that they were actually blanks, that is, the so-called white bullets. And he said:” We certainly wouldn’t have killed anyone. We don’t use violence.” And George Mores knew that these guys do such robberies, that they never use force in the sense: No one ever got hurt. But still, what was terrible for him as a policeman was that the Minister of Police called him for a report and said: “You have a year. If you don’t find these guys and arrest them, you’re on your way to retirement. And who knows, maybe you will be added to some list of suspicious persons that you may have cooperated with in some way. Because you have been provided with everything you asked for from the Ministry of Police. You have unlimited funds, Nobody is complaining to you. You have the right to call anyone, say the head of the police or the head of the underworld of the famous Corsican underworld, to ask for information about who is robbing jewelry stores all over France.” And no one really knew. It was impossible to rob one such jewelry store in France and the Corsican mafia not know about it. It’s an impossible story. However, in this case, since this group that George followed for three whole years was formed, it has committed, believe it or not, a hundred robberies in France. And Now you know how it goes: Usually unresolved cases, it is possible that many robberies were done by the French Police. In 1955. March 13 in the village of Gornja Slatina near Leskovac. And he finished in that village elementary school. He later enrolled and However, he did not go to high school because in 1970, he went to work temporarily in France. And then he said goodbye to his village. His pigeons kept in the village, he distributed it to his friends and headed with his parents to distant France, to the city of light. He read a lot about Paris, he heard a lot about the guys who went there to gain their fame. And he said: “Surely it is a city that will provide me with everything I need in life. My village and Leskovac are too small for me.” Before he left for Paris with his parents, Novica also trained in boxing in Leskovac. Everyone called him Kadri. And in the old Arabic language, Qadri means one who is capable, strong, quick and skillful. Sometimes a nickname says a lot about a person, sometimes much more than the name itself. And in this case it turns out that it was just like that. However, everyone knew that he was considered a boy not to be messed with in the sense: He was physically strong and well trained as a boxer. And many were relieved when he left for Paris. Although the Leskovac police did not keep any record of him as a problem boy for the entire time of his stay, which is about 15 years while he was in his place, except that he forcibly took a pigeon cage from a boy from the village. However, after arriving in Paris, this guy still continues to engage in boxing. He was not interested in school. He has many friends from the South emigration in Paris. However, no one calls him Kadri anymore. Everyone starts calling him Steve. During that period, Steve starts hanging out with a guy named Bruno. That Bruno with whom he hangs out during that period is Albanian. His name is Suleiman and he came from Pec. He was nicknamed Bruno for some reason. He was several years older than Steve and was a well-known gambler. He hung out mostly with Albanians and loved Steve. He took it with him all the time. And Steve played bodyguard for him. Not that he was playing tricks, but he was his bodyguard. Even that Albanian Bruno enabled Steve to become the personal bodyguard of the famous actor Jean Paul Belmond. Steve also did that job for a period. He also appeared as a stuntman in some films starring Belmondo. And that group of Albanian gamblers, as Steve told our Jugovics when they asked him: “Okay, why are you guarding an Albanian? There are a lot of combinations and slag.” He said: “No, I don’t need any slag. Albanians do good jobs and pay well. And after all, I’m in the training room with half of those guys.” Those guys also liked to train boxing. And Steve became famous in the entire Jugo milieu. And Steve was doing bodyguard work for this guy, Bruno, an Albanian gambler from Peć. And of course he hung out with all the people from the criminal milieu of the South. And what is happening there now? They offer him various combinations. He accepted some and because of some he was stuck in prison. And now, while he was in a juvenile prison for about six to seven months due to some extortion, it was found out that he had schizophrenia. After getting out of prison, Steve decided to join the Foreign Legion. And he applied. He goes to that camp in Marseille in the south of France. He passed the medical examination. And at the same time, he was also diagnosed with mental problems, actually schizophrenia. And they told him that he was not for the army and they let him go. Later Steve used it. And whenever he was arrested by the police, he would claim that he had an F diagnosis and that he was actually for treatment. That the violent behavior he showed during some extortion is actually his illness and not his evil intention. And he took issue with that story several times and received some light sentences of several months in prison. And now it all worked that way. He trained in boxing, he did extortion. He used to resell some stolen things he got from Jugo thieves. He sold those mangupis to Albanian gamblers and some of their clients with whom they gambled. He met the complete Albanian milieu in Paris through his friend Bruno Albanc from Pec. And he knew all the people from all areas of the then former SFRY. And at the end of the day, I can say that the French police completely put all those people in one basket, the so-called Jugo gang. And who knows how long it would take for Steve to walk from one milieu to another. He also met the Croatian milieu. He knew that they were now in a completely different story compared to the Albanians. And he knew everything, actually, how it works and who does what jobs. And he knew that the Albanians got the drug business through the Corsicans and that they did the same business with the Turks and that they strictly kept that business under their control. They did not allow anyone to interfere in those affairs. He also knew that Montenegrins, Serbs, Bosnians, Croats do big robberies and rackets and that they socialize with each other, hustle and make joint combinations because they have a similar mentality. And it is most likely that Steve would join one of those teams from the South region, who would offer him who knows what great combination. And he would have entered the story because they had already mentioned to him that there are teams in Belgium and Germany who commit large-scale robberies of goldsmiths, especially some teams in Scandinavia. And through his friend Pećanac, he also met some guys who arrived from Belgrade. One of them was even Željko Raznjatović Arkan. He met him through his friend Bruno from Pec. And that came down to just a few get-togethers in Paris. Now, why exactly was Arkan in Paris at the end of the 70s? Only he knew that. And he was like three years older than Steve. And now Steve, in this search for himself, where should he fit in, which team and what should he do? Once, while he was sitting in the famous Trocadero cafe and while he was waiting for some of his friends to sell some jackets that he got from some Bosnians, an unknown guy came by who spoke fluent French and bad Serbian. He met him. And to his surprise, that guy’s name was Bruno, Bruno Sulak. Bruno Sulak is a guy who introduced himself as actually being a member of Jugo gang. And when Steve asked him: “Okay, why do you speak Serbian so badly? Where are you from?” He said: “Look, my parents are Serbs. But I speak Serbian poorly because I was born in France.” And that was the first meeting between Steve and Bruno Sulak in 1979 at the Trocadero Cafe in Paris. And of course all that lasted until the third drink. And when they had their third drink, Bruno Sulak told him that he was actually born in Algeria in 1955 , that his father was a member of the French Foreign Legion. And that’s why he was born there because his father served there. That his mother is a real French woman. And that his father is Polish and that his paternal grandmother is Russian. And that he loves all Slavs. That he has nothing to do with Serbs, but that he loves all Yugoslavs because they are Slavs. There are many of them in France and there is a lot of contact with them. And when Steve asked him where he was actually from and where he lived. He said he was from Marseille. And that he came to Marseille at the age of two from Algeria, when his father was transferred from Algeria to France, he was two years old. He came to Marseilles. And he spent there until he was 17 years old, when he went to prison for the first time for some theft. He robbed a gas station. And after leaving that juvenile prison where he spent eight months, to the general surprise of his entire family, he signed up for the Foreign Legion . He passed the examinations and went to Corsica in order to complete the entire camp for admission to the Foreign Legion. And he spent almost a year in Corsica. And in 1978, he was supposed to go with his Second Parachute Regiment on a mission to Africa. And he got 10 days off to spend with his family. And he was only a few hours with his family in Marseille. And then he ran away to Paris. And he said, “I’ve actually deserted and I don’t want to ever appear in the Foreign Legion again. And now I’m on Interpol’s red card.” And that he must not legitimize himself anywhere as Bruno Sulak. And that he actually uses a Yugoslav passport with the name Jovan Petrović. And that’s why he started to learn the Serbian language and hang out mostly with Yugoslavs. Now that was sometime in the summer of 1979 . Since then, Novica Živković Steve and Bruno Sulak have become inseparable friends. After a few months, Zdravko Gvero joins them and becomes their third pajtos. This is a guy who was born in 1960 in the vicinity of Mostar and who emigrated to France because he did not want to do military service. And now it becomes a trio that will go down in all the annals of France and the European police. They will go down in the annals as the team that did the most famous robberies of jewelers. Bruno Sulak, now hanging out with Novic Živković, actually Steve and his friend who was called the Third, i.e. with Zdravko Gvera, is trying in every possible way to fascinate them that he is a man of worldly manners. And that he has great ideas on how great combinations can be made. He said while he was in the Foreign Legion, while he was there for a year in Corsica, that he met a lot of Corsicans, well-known mobsters who know, for example many powerful people here in France. And that he can make a lot of strong blows for some combinations of the type: To carry out big robberies of well-known jewelers’ banks and the like. And at one point, Steve asks him: “Do you happen to know the big mobsters who are the godfathers of the famous actor Alain Delon?” And he said: “Well, I haven’t met them just now. But I know who those guys really are. And after all, I also heard about the big affair that shook the whole of France and maybe the whole of Europe ten or more years ago.” And they touched on the story of the late Stevica Marković, who was actually Alain Delon’s bodyguard. And in that story, Steve says: “Look, now and then, when there are big film screenings, I secure Belmond. But through Belmond, I met Alain Delon’s son, Anthony Delon.” And now Steve says in such a surprised way: “Come on, don’t tell me you know Antony Delon.” And he said: “Why not. I know that tonight at 10 o’clock he has a reserved table at the famous Maxim.” And now Sulak is winking at Steve. He said to escort his friend Gwer, to go chase the girls. They also gave him some money for expenses. And Sulak now suggests to Steve that they go to Maksim, to have a drink there. And so it happened. That evening in 1979, they went to Maxim’s. And there, in a large group made up mostly of Corsicans, sat a boy who was 15 years old and liked to hang out with people from a criminal environment. He was cute, of course he looked like his father Allen. And when Steve entered Maxima with his partner, he went to the bar. They sat down there, they ordered drinks. Young Delon immediately stood up. He walked up to Steve and said goodbye to him. And that’s where Steve introduced him to Bruno. Bruno spoke at length with Antony Delon. And even that conversation was very humorous at one point. Anthony called some girls over to introduce them to Steve and Bruno. Bruno was a nice guy just like Steve. And these girls liked it very much that they were now in the company of three handsome men. And what actually happens next? Was Bruno still hanging out with young Delon without Steve knowing? It’s actually a mystery now because Steve didn’t break it. But I believe that Bruno, as a skilled manipulator, started hanging out with young Delon. Because several times after that outing in Maxima, Steve saw Bruno sitting in some famous cafes with a young man who was actually the manager of young Delon. Because his father Allen hired a young businessman to introduce his son to the world of fashion business and maybe acting. And now, suddenly, the man who is the maltene guru in a way to young Delon becomes very close to Bruno Sulak. And she starts seeing him together in those famous Parisian cafes. And of course everyone knew Sulak as a Yugoslav. They called him by the nickname Jugo. He was known for changing a lot of those beauties, some famous girls from the world of show business. Through Anthony Delon, he also met the famous starlet of that time from Paris, Chantal, with whom he married after a long period of dating. The wedding took place in February 1979. However, then he had to show his right documents. And of course someone typed it to the police, because in every service there is always someone who is an informer and a collaborator of the police. It is most likely that it is like that everywhere in the world, including in France. And the French police arrested Bruno Sulak for desertion from the Foreign Legion. During a routine inspection of his car, weapons that he used in some robberies were found there. A large amount of cash and gold checks were found , which he did not know where it came from, nor could he prove its origin. Of course, he was transferred to a prison in the vicinity of Marseille, where he was supposed to await trial for desertion, and for money and weapons for which he could not prove the origin, that is, for illegal possession of weapons and most likely for money originating from bandit thefts. While he was waiting for that trial, an opportunity arose. And the cunning Bruno Sulak, after a year and a half spent in prison, escapes from prison and is free. He goes straight to his friends in Paris to people from the Jugo mafia world. And of course the first person to whom it was reported was Novica Živković Steve who was already ordaining under the name Radiša Jovanović during that period. There, of course, he established a relationship with his wife Chantal again. He meets some other people from that Jugo ganga, which was proposed by Radiša Jovanović, i.e. Steve, of course. And Bruno Sulak then suggests to Steve that they do some much more serious work, actually robbing jewelers, banks and well-known chains of department stores. And of course he suggested Radiša Jovanović as a trusted man, since they cannot do that as a duo and Zdravko Gvera as the third in that team. And Bruno Sulak agreed. And they started their actions. And the first robbery they did in Paris was done as a trio, i.e. Steve, Bruno Sulak and Gwero, whom everyone from the underground, including the French police, called the Third. So we will call him the Third in this story of ours. As a trio, they robbed a jewelry store. And the entire booty was given to Bruno Sulak to sell through some of his connections and get the money. And he did it. And the money is divided into equal parts. He said: “It doesn’t matter who is in charge of this crew. The money is divided into three equal parts. But we have to give 50% to the people who buy the stolen jewelry because nobody will pay the real price.” And of course, that was taken for granted, i.e. they sold stolen jewelry at half price. And now the very strange thing: It surprised Radiša Jovanović, i.e. Steve. Immediately three days after the robbery, all the newspapers in France wrote that a well-known jewelry store in the center of Paris was robbed by people named Bruno Sulak and Radiša Jovanović. So Steve was surprised. He said: “How is it possible that the police immediately found out that we did the work?” And then Bruno told him not to tell anyone from the Jugo underground that his conspiratorial name for the robberies is Radiša Jovanović, because they will immediately galvanize him to the French police. And it’s a good thing that now the French police will be looking for Radisa Jovanović, whom no one knows, among the snitches from the South underground. And the man’s name is actually Novica Živković. And he says: “As long as they are looking for Radisa Jovanović, no one will arrest you.” And that’s how it worked. As a team, in just a year and a half, they committed over 50 robberies on the territory of the whole of France. What is strange to many who have studied this trio is why they did not withdraw after so many robberies and after so much looted money? The only conclusion I could come to was that they were a bunch of kids who didn’t care about money. Bruno Sulak, I don’t know what vices he had. But in general, after every second or third robbery, he had no money. Was he handing it out to the poor because he imagined he was the reincarnation of Arsene Lupin? Possibly. And then he shared a fist and a cap. Novica Živković, it is known for sure that in that period from 80 to 82 he opened restaurants for eight of his friends whom he knew superficially in various parts of Europe. Eight restaurants were opened in the territory of the former South or Western Europe, without him benefiting from it . He also opened a restaurant in Bordeaux for Bruno’s own sister Pauline. And during that time, as the press later wrote, and Pauline herself said, he gave one million and 400,000 francs. And that ‘s somewhere around $300, $400,000 during that time. That’s a huge amount of money. And he opened an extra restaurant. It’s actually a motel in Bordeaux and he said, “This is yours. And that’s what I did just so you don’t suffer.” And that was not done by his own brother Bruno. Now, according to some stories, later when it was all over, allegedly Steve and Pauline were in some kind of emotional relationship. And let me justify that, that restaurant. But why did he open up to, say, an acquaintance whom he knew superficially? That was the most fulfilling for Novica Živković, that is, for Steve to play Robin Hood. It was almost unheard of in the annals of crime until that period. Now, if they were not interested in money, then why did they go on robberies? Why were they robbing all that jewelry? I guess it was just about fame, that magazines write about these robberies and of course adrenaline. And perhaps also some great satisfaction when someone who has no money is given a large amount of money playing Arsene Lupin or, say, Robin Hood. For this third guy, I know for sure that he also liked to drink, and he also liked to play roulette. So his money was definitely going to gamble. I do not believe that he distributed his share of money there for humanitarian purposes. But he gambled. It is also a great vice. But my god, an easy hunt is easily lost. I can still understand him, but not these two. And now, before each robbery, they had an agreement on how to carry it out. And what was most important in each one there was security to that story, not only theirs but also the people who work there. And possibly customers who happen to be in that store or jewelry store. And they strictly took care that no child or pregnant woman was present, so that the stress would not cause a spontaneous abortion, or the child would not have any consequences from the stress. They simply did not want to carry anyone on their soul. And that is what is very strange. And even more strange in the whole story: In a city like Paris, where the anti-bandit brigades have been working to perfection for decades, where they have informants in every story, it was impossible to reach these three guys. What was that vow of silence? It’s so simple that people don’t believe it. Even if that silence is bought with money, no one can say no while drunk or whatever, especially not to the cunning and experienced French police. And that drove George to madness, a man who was awarded several times by the minister himself. He got to the point where François Mitterrand called him personally and said to him: “Georges, as a friend, I advise you to retire because everyone is laughing at you. So the entire ministry is laughing at you. People from your anti-gang brigade are laughing at you.” And George began to believe that story. He couldn’t sleep. He thought he was going crazy. And once, while he was lying down, while he was sweating , while he was drinking some sedatives to sleep, because he goes to work without sleep for days, his phone rang. And he said: “There must have been another robbery. They are calling me now to tell me that these mangups have done who knows what.” He answered, said: “Yes.” And from the other side he heard the voice of a young man who said: “Here is the man you are looking for. This is Bruno Sulak.” You can imagine how Georges felt. He thought that one of his colleagues was making fun of him. And when Bruno explained to him in detail where and how they committed some robberies. And when he told him the name of a bar called the Black Cat in Paris, which was run by a Yugoslav woman and where the entire elite of those Yugoslav criminals gathered. He said there was a tree in front of the pub. And that next to that tree they will find buried a ring that comes from the theft. And that inside there will be a letter addressed to George. George could not believe what this young man was telling him. And he could hardly wait for the morning. He didn’t want to go to work. He actually called his secretary and said he had to go to an important meeting. And no less, he immediately went first to the Black Cat tavern. He drank coffee there, talked to the owner, who was really a Yugoslav. And she said that she runs the bar with a French woman. That they are partners. And that the guests are mostly Yugoslavs who live and work in Paris. And to his question: “Who are these people and what do they do?” She said: “They deal with various things. Some are actors, some are tailors. Many work in some companies, and there are also political emigrants. Criminals don’t come to me here .” That woman immediately distanced herself and let George know that she did not want to cooperate with the police. Which he understood as something that was normal. And he said, “Surely a woman wouldn’t want to have any trouble if someone saw her too long to talk to me.” And he said, “Don’t worry, I didn’t come to do any searches, nor am I going to arrest anyone here.” He came out . And when he was leaving, he was approached by four or five young men who took out the metal police badges of the French police. And they said: “Boss, we recognized you. We are here every day on assignment. And believe us, here in this tavern, at least 1/3 of the total number of guests are always police officers in plainclothes.” And that simply confused George. He left as if walking. Then he went as if tying shoelaces to that tree. He bent down and with a ballpoint pen dug the exact spot next to the tree that the young man had told him on the phone. And indeed he came across a metal tobacco box. And he took that box, put it in his pocket and left . Immediately after getting into his car, he opened the same box and found a ring there. And he found some receipts that were actually taken from a jewelry store that had been robbed. And on each bill was Bruno Sulak’s signature and a greeting for Commissioner George. And now the commissioner was sure that he was actually talking to the real bandit, the bandit he was looking for. And he immediately asked to check where the call came from. They said it was a payphone next to the main one Garde Lyon train station in Paris. He knew that it was too stupid to put someone to watch now and wait for someone to call from that payphone at a certain time. Because he was sure that the next call would be from who knows where. And they agreed to hear each other at least once a week. And that’s what Bruno Sulak did all the time. And that drove Georges Moreas crazy. And he didn’t put it in his reports. When the entire case related to this team ended, he said: “Well, it was people so and so.” However, until we get there we have to go in one order. In the meantime, after that conversation, a robbery of a jewelry store in Paris took place in 1982. But neither Steve nor the Third took part in that robbery. That robbery was carried out by Sulak with another team of Yugoslavs and a French girl. And what happened? Immediately during the sale of jewelry, because someone from the team of guys that Bruno Sulak chose from these Jugovics, immediately wanted to cash in to get the money to honor the company. He made a mistake. He sold them to a jeweler who immediately reported them to the police. And the police arrested them all. And Bruno Sulak, unlike his companions who were taken to prison in Bordeaux where they were awaiting trial, was taken to prison in Marseille where he was supposed to be tried for desertion from the Foreign Legion, and then to be tried for banditry. However, Georges Morais immediately called Mitterrand personally and said: “I protest that some things, regardless of desertion and that it is against the army and against the security of the state, I do not allow some things to be put as a priority. I think that the priority is to try this man for organized crime.” And he said: “I personally want to welcome him to the prison in Bordeaux and put that bandit in the best guarded cell. And that he be tried for all what he did in France. Only then will he be tried for desertion.” And of course Mitterrand called the Minister of Justice. And so it was decided that in 1982, Bruno Sulak would be transferred from the Marseille prison to the prison in Bordeaux. Now, who did the security assessment of the transfer of this prisoner? I don’t even know that now . But it was decided that it would be enough for four policemen to escort this man, no less than by rail. And what happens now? That was Sunday. The train was passenger. It’s the weekend . There was also a lot of police who had nothing to do with that prison transport. At one point, halfway to Bordeaux, the train stopped. Someone pulled the handbrake. The door of the compartment where four policemen were with Sulak tied up was opened . Two gendarmes, members of the Anti-Gang Brigade, entered and only said: “Good day.” And the policemen greeted them. But what did these gendarmes do? They took out their pistols, they pointed at the policemen and they said: “We advise you not to do anything stupid because you will be liquidated immediately. And immediately untie the prisoner.” They were also in shock. But they had to listen. They took Bruno Sulak away. He stood up, said, “Well done guys, you did a good job on this.” He patted the leader of that team on the shoulder. He recognized that the Third was standing there next to Steve. And there was also another companion whom he did not know. Those guys were really dangerous. The third one in particular seemed like someone who was ready to kill a total of four policemen in one second. And he really was a very dangerous guy. And what happens now? The third ordered the officers to take off their seatbelts and took them. So he took all four pistols with official IDs and batons. They handcuffed the policemen, locked the compartment, got off the train, and walked about 30 meters. Because there is a highway right there. And there was a red Alpina parked there . Everyone got into that car, which drove away in an unknown direction with a loud squeal of tires. And while the car was leaving at high speed in an unknown direction, Georges Moreas was waiting for the arrival of Bruno Sulak in a prison cell in Bordeaux. And he almost had a heart attack when a policeman came in and told him: “The bosses just informed us that Bruno Sulak was kidnapped on the way to the prison cell.” I mean, the man almost didn’t slog. And when he heard that the deportation of such a dangerous prisoner was carried out as if someone who had been sentenced to a small time sentence was being deported, he simply could not believe it. At that moment, Bruno Sulak was not even charged for one murder. But just for what was attributed to him, it already exceeded the figure of over 50 million dollars robbed in various robberies of jewelers that he did with Novic Živković Steve and with a third man whose name he did not even know. And now what happens? He immediately called Miteran and demanded that Bruno Sulak and his friend Steve, i.e. Radiša Jovanović, be declared state enemies number one. Can you imagine? And that happened. An important extraordinary meeting of the national security of the Republic of France was held . And these two men: Radiša Jovanović, a man under a false name, and Bruno Sulak, were declared the number one enemy of the state. They have become like someone wanted for terrorism or for trying to overthrow the state. That’s how they characterized them. I can imagine what kind of attention there was in general towards this complete team. Everyone was looking for them now. And nothing less than the insurance institute Lloyd gave a reward for information about Radiša Jovanović and Bruno Sulak, which amounted to no less than one million dollars. You can imagine now the snitches in a big city in the Yugo milieu who are snitches for no reason, and now they can make a million dollars. A dream of dreams. And this is all happening in 1982. And from the year 82, when they escaped with that Alpina, until the year 83, when the event happened in Cannes in the month of August, this team committed another 50 robberies of famous goldsmiths, jewelry stores and banks. Can you imagine? And they used the most modern methods, ie radar jammers, lasers and alarms. They didn’t just enter the jewelry store as playboys: They pick up the jewelry and leave. They used the most modern methods, and they were not trained for it. Which indicates that they hired experts and paid big. Among other things, they robbed a famous museum. They took a large amount of French royal jewelry that was considered a national treasure. And what did Bruno Sulak do? He called Lloyd’s Insurance and told them exactly where the jewelry was: In a box in a small town in France, it was locked in a train station. The Lloyd people didn’t believe it at first. And when they went there, the jewelry was indeed there. And now there is such an organization to remove all those lasers, wonders, that jewelry is being robbed. Everything, down to the last piece, is stored in that cassette. And according to Bruno Sulak’s report, he finds himself where he said he would be. And now no one is clear anymore: Why did this team do something where they risked their lives? That they would later hand over the same thing to the insurance company and that jewelry would be returned to the French government. Now everyone was in awe. Georges Moreas was the most amazed. He said, “I don’t understand anything now. What are these guys doing? Are they really crazy or are they making fools of us?” Because they took it to a jeweler to cut those diamonds. As soon as a diamond is cut, it is no longer the diamond it once was. There’s no way the police will find him if he’s dismembered. That is no longer proven. A diamond has no fingerprint. But when it is cut, it is already another diamond. And when a large piece is made into 10 small ones, it is sold out at 10 different merchants and it loses every trace. And already at that time, the French intelligence service, not the police, but the military, received information that Bruno Sulak was starting to sell stolen jewelry through Basque terrorists. And no less than directly IRI. And that some international Arab organization for arms trade is involved in all of this. And now there is a general confusion. An emergency meeting is called again. And they say they have to increase the level of security against this team. And something is being enacted that has not been enacted as a security measure in France since World War II. And that is: If you notice the work of this team on the field to implement something that is really a very, very rare decision in France. And that is: Kill on sight. So there is no Stop warning. Now that’s a double-edged sword. What if someone who looks like these guys shows up? And they can kill an innocent man. How is this action done? George Moreas held a meeting with his Anti Gang Brigade. This kind of action is done so that if they have information that this gang is going to rob a certain jewelry store, museum or bank, they set up snipers, that is, an ambush. And as soon as he appears, they shoot at them and kill them on sight. And that action was personally approved and signed by the President of France, François Mitterrand. And now you can imagine what level this game got? Because something like this did not happen in the post-war period To France, I can freely say, maybe not even in post-war Europe in the hunt for some bandits. Now, was it justified or not? We’ll see later. Of course, when such a decision is made, it is not made against anyone. And that anyone against whom such a decision was made means that he also has some connections at the top of the police itself. And this trio, I assume all led by Bruno Sulak, received information that the highest police authorities had made a decision: Kill on sight. He immediately decided that an important decision should be made in an apartment that served as a shelter, an apartment where important decisions were made for this gang. He immediately called a work meeting at which Treči and Steve were supposed to appear in person. And that was done. They met at the appointed time. Bruno Sulak said that from now on no one has the right to sell jewelry to his dealers. That Bruno himself, through his trusted people who are people of repute, will only sell jewelry. That he would receive the money personally from Bruno by paying into secret accounts as they agreed. That they will live in various locations around France that Bruno determines. They will not be permanently stationed in Paris. And that they don’t make any incidents in the sense of: Getting drunk in bars, fights and the like. And that there is a possibility that they will either go to Argentina or Brazil, because he was thinking about that option as well. It means that they retire from work and go to South America. And both Steve and the Third agreed that it might be for the best. But Bruno said, “So far I still don’t think the police will go on a rabbit hunt for us. And we can still do what we’ve been doing, but we’ll be a lot more careful. And we’ll only go for the big shots.” And that’s what they did. In total, since this decision on action: Kill on sight was made, they have carried out another 30 major robberies, mostly of the most famous jewelry stores. And it all worked according to the plan that Bruno had set. And then came August 19, 1983, when the famous Cartier jewelry store was robbed on the Cannes Promenade, when a large amount of jewelry and the famous panther lighter encrusted with diamonds with pink eyes were taken. And when that case happened, now the police are hunting for the Pink Panthers. That’s what they called: Kill on Sight Pink Panthers. Of course, the informants immediately informed Bruno and the team that the military special police were now involved, that is, the intelligence service that was hunting them. That at least all telephone receivers in all hotels are turned on. That everything is under the control of the police and that they should be extremely careful. And they were. But what is happening? You can run away from anyone, maybe even the police. But you cannot escape from your countrymen. And now this team was seen by a team of Yugoslavs who were hanging out with them. And many of them even knew that Steve and the Third were actually robbing jewelers. One of them was a man who constantly emphasized that he was a citizen of Belgrade for 10 generations. They called him Seljak. That’s what the emigration from Paris called him. Another man who knew that this trio was robbing goldsmiths was an actor who came back in that period with Stevica Marković and started doing only commercials for some well-known French brands. And he was married to a well-known French director. Also, this trio knew a guy who was a playboy, who was a guy for both rich ladies and rich gentlemen. And he was somehow connected in that first story of reselling jewelry. And he knew that they were doing these robberies of jewelers, robberies of famous watches because this boy used to sell goods for them. And now all of a sudden they have withdrawn, they are barely visible. When he sees them they are now extremely cautious. He knew something was up. Also among the Yugoslavs, a man who knew this story completely was a man called Konj. They called him the Horse because he was always at the hippodromes. And he said he had tips for safe bets on horse races. And he was a member of the old guard of the Belgrade mobsters who had been in Paris for decades. And the police started following these people as well. They were not even aware that they were under surveillance. They even listened to their mutual conversations in the sense that someone does not say something: “Well, this will happen. I saw this, this and that goods are being offered” and the like. Now what happens next? The criminogenic milieu at that moment in Paris is held by a man who is on the Paris-Belgium route and is originally from the south of Serbia, more precisely from Prokupilja. He constantly said that he is not a rightist and that he is not interested in conflicts in our emigration. That he is actually a leftist and that he is only interested in crime. And because of his political commitment, the guys in the criminal world called him Levi. And Levi, by God, knew the complete criminal milieu from the then Yugoslavia that operated in the area of Western Europe. He also knew Giška and Arkan and Ranko Rubežić. He knew all the boys. And of course his were Paris and Brussels. He also came to Paris as a boss. And he said that he still had to be paid by racketeers, regardless of whether they were running restaurants or tailoring workshops for making suits. And he also said that: “He hasn’t been seeing Steve lately, that is, Novica Živković, because he interfered in his work before.” And how did Novica Živković get involved in Levom’s business before? Well, because Novica Živković was a boy when he grew up, he was in love with a girl. And she invited him to her birthday so they could get to know each other better. It was the daughter of some of our guest workers. And this boy was 18 years old at the time. He went to sew a new suit. And when he went there he told this tailor that he urgently needed a suit in two days and not to ask for a price. And he told him five times the price during that period. Let’s say if a suit cost 1,000 francs, he said: “That costs you then 5,000 francs.” And he took it out and paid for it. And when he came to pick up the suit because he was going to a birthday party in the evening, the boss started laughing. It was a man from the vicinity of Požarevac. And he said: “Boy, come on, I mean come in a week. A girl will wait if she loves you, she loves you dressed like that. You’re not stupid to think that I can sew you a suit in two days.” And then he said: “Okay, then give me back the cloth and give me back the 5,000 francs.” This one said: “Come on , run away, get lost outside.” And that’s when Novica hit him so terribly and said: “From now on, not only have you returned these 5,000 francs to me, you will have to pay me 5,000 francs every month for protection.” And this man, not only paid him 5,000 francs, but also informed all his tailor friends who are there from Yugoslavia and who sew suits that a new mafioso has appeared who beats terribly and charges a racket. Now why did that man from Pozarevac do that? He asked Novica Živković to set up 10, 15 people that he would racketeer, but to release him from the racket. And he accepted it. However, Novica Živković did not know that they were already paying for the racket with Lev. And he came into conflict with Levi even then, but he was not afraid of him. And what did he do once? He called Levy. He walked in while Levi was sitting in a restaurant. He went in there and said: “Levi here I came because I’m not afraid of you. Now let’s go fight in the street or here in the restaurant, or if you want we go down to the basement and prove to each other who’s in charge. Whoever comes out first and has a drink with the boys takes the tailors’ racket from now on.” Levi laughed and said, “Come on kid, run away, I’m not going to think about it. You’re an outsider to me and I don’t have time to waste time with you.” However, Novica, since he was really crazy brave, and he was so strong, he was a boxer, said: “You’re afraid, you’re just an ordinary egghead. Because if it weren’t for you, you would have gone down with me either to the basement or out in front of the tavern so that they wouldn’t break the inventory here.” And what did Levi do? He said, “Okay then, let’s go to the basement.” And they went down to the basement. And all the Yugoslavs who were in the restaurant went out in front of the Crna Matka tavern to bet who would leave first, Novica Živković or Levi. And of course Novica Živković came out of the pub after about 15 minutes . There was absolutely nothing visible about him in the sense that he was injured or torn. He only went in his own direction. And half an hour later Levi appeared. He was simply disfigured from the beatings and all torn up. He saw a group of Yugoslavs sitting there. He called some of them by name and told a Montenegrin: “You have the task of collecting 10,000 francs from each of them for watching the play.” Which he did. He collected the money, took it to Levom. And Levi, of course, took a taxi to the emergency room. And there he said how he fell on some stairs. However, from then on it was only a matter of time when there would be a showdown between Levo and Novica Živković. And it didn’t take long to wait. While Novica Živković was sitting with his company on the terrace in front of the Black Cat, a black BMW with tinted windows and Belgian license plates appeared and the rear window on the passenger side rolled down . The barrel of an automatic rifle appeared. Everyone assumes it was an Uzi. He started shooting and several bullets hit Novica Živković. Everyone knew that Levy ordered this murder, or maybe he was the shooter himself. Novica Živković survived. However, one bullet tore the Achilles tendon on his left leg. Since then, Novica Živković was constantly visibly limping. He tried not to show it so much. However, even after numerous operations, he remained disabled for life. And now everyone was expecting when there would be an opposite showdown between Novica Živković and Levo. And Bruno Sulak forbade Novica Živković because they are in a big business to have anything more to do with Levi, to forget him and not to accidentally try to make fun of him. And everything was going as normal now. Novica listened to Bruno as his boss. Maltene thought nothing more of Lev. He didn’t even think about him when the weather changed and when he had to lie in his room for two or three days and drink brufene. He never mentioned Levo again to his girlfriend Nellie. He tried to simply forget him. And the Cannes case happened, the Cannes robbery. He, Treći and Sulak robbed a large amount of gold. The hunt for the Pink Panthers has now begun. Novica knew that it was only a matter of time before the police in Paris would pick them up and possibly liquidate them. And he let Bruno know that. And he said that he doesn’t like the fact that Bruno exposes himself too much in the newspapers, that he sends letters to various magazines, that he talks about stocks, that he plays Arsene Lupine and the like. And he said that there was also a journalist in Yugoslavia who wrote about them, but he mentioned Steve as the leader of the gang, of course because he is Yugoslav and told a lot of untruths. And he asked Sulak if he could threaten that journalist through one of his friends not to write untruths about them, but if he wanted to come to Paris in person to tell him in person what they were actually doing and to agree on how he would write a feature about them or maybe even a book. And Bruno Sulak granted him that. He also informed the journalist through his actor friend that he was free to come to Paris in order to take an interview from Novica Živković. And that’s what this journalist did. A meeting is secured. Sulak, Treći and Steve met there in a secret location . Steve suggested that the journalist give him some tapes on which he would tell his entire life story, based on which this journalist would one day write a book. And it was done. Several of those cassettes were given to Novica. I think as many as ten. And a time has been agreed upon when it will all be brought back. Novica said: “Don’t worry, I’ll let you know who will bring you these tapes, because it certainly won’t be me.” And now, after that robbery, something unforeseen happens. In a police raid after a stormy night in Crazy Horse, the car of a Yugoslav named Marko Nikov was stopped. Alain Delon’s son Anthony was also in that car. A large quantity of weapons was also found during the search of the car. And in Anthony Delon’s belt was a gun, no less than the same one that was taken from those four policemen when Bruno Sulak was kidnapped from the train. And of course Commissioner George was informed immediately. He came to the police station where this young Antony Delon was. However, before the arrival of George himself because he was in the field outside Paris, dad Delon, actually Alain, came. He came with his whole team of lawyers and was able to free his son and get him out of the whole situation about that gun and everything. Of course, this guy Marko was released from full responsibility, he was released. He went into the unknown that evening and was never seen again. Now what happened to that guy , I don’t know. But no charges were filed against Anthony Delon. And he was not even asked the question: Where did the gun that was in the official charge of the policeman who accompanied Bruno Sulak to prison come from? Commissioner George only said: “You never know with the Delon family. They can be freed from all responsibility, but it seems they can’t free themselves from the Yugoslavs.” Now, did Commissioner George mean the situation around Stevica Marković when the entire Fifth Republic was shaking or not? Only the commissioner knew that. But I think so he was just targeting that affair. Anyway, life started to flow in the same way. However, it is most likely that the Anti-Gang Brigade started following young Delon in order to possibly get to Sulak and his friends. And after this unfortunate event, when a gun was found with young Delon, Sulak decided that it would be best for them to leave France for a while and take refuge in South America. However, while they were postponing the day of their departure from Paris, they decided to do a few more robberies around Paris. And that’s what they did. Another Cartier jewelry store in Paris was robbed . A large amount of jewelry worth 5.6 million dollars was also taken . Another jewelry store owned by the Tiffany jewelry chain was also robbed, where a large amount of jewelry was also taken. And they attributed all that to this team, which they now called the Pink Panther. And did they do those robberies now or not? For this Cartier, Bruno Sulak later said that they were. But for the latter, it has not been proven because, as I said, almost every jewelry store robbery that happens in France was attributed to this team. And some robberies were carried out on the same day at the same time in locations hundreds of kilometers apart. You can imagine the paranoia among the police themselves. But this team decided to leave France on October 1, 1983. And he is leaving for Brazil no less. According to some information, they had about ten million dollars in cash with them. They left. They were there for two months and returned from Brazil penniless. Most likely, that money was left there to be found, God forbid. And they returned here because they failed to immediately sell all the jewelry they had on their shelves. According to some estimates that Sulak told them at the time in Brazil: That jewelry they had with them was estimated at about 50 million dollars. And after arriving in Paris, they start thinking about how to sell that jewelry and to whom to sell it. A part of the jewelry was immediately reported by Sulak that he had given to verified people “from a strong milieu” as he said, to sell to some rich Jews. And he planned to sell the rest of the jewelry, or most of the jewelry, to the Basque separatists. And all of that was supposed to take place in Bijarica. Because Biarritz was considered the capital of the Basque separatists. And also the town of Deauville, which is located next to Biarritz. And there he was supposed to meet with the head of that terrorist organization at the Hilton Hotel. And the agreement was that Treči and Sulak would go to a meeting with the Basques, and that Steve would stay in Paris. And that happened. Right around the beginning of February, Steve stays to hang out with his high society friends. I assume it’s Delon’s son. And Sulak and Treći leave for the Côte d’Azur. And there in Deauville at the Hilton Hotel while the Third was waiting in front of the Hilton in the car, Sulak went to meet with a powerful arms dealer from Morocco who was doing a combination for the Basque Country and the IRU. And on that February 7, around 10 p.m. in Deauville, in the Hilton Hotel, while the music was playing Withered Leaves and while some girl was singing that famous Italian song next to the piano, a man entered with his bodyguards. He was a small, chubby Moroccan who was very well known in the world of arms dealers. He was also a relative of one of the most famous arms dealers of that period, the famous Khashoggi. He showed up with security, sat in a booth, ordered a drink. There he waited for Sulak. they greeted each other like old friends, which indicated that they were already trading heavily. They started the story. And then Sulak told him that he had a larger quantity of jewelry, about 10.15 kg of jewelry to sell him, but first he wanted to see what the price was. And then he said: “You know what, since it is a larger quantity of jewelry, I really can’t give you a higher offer. I can only pay 25% of the value.” And that’s where Sulak got so annoyed. He said, “Well, what’s the point now? Why 25%? Come on, 40%, but 25% is really small. Until now, it’s been 50% of the value.” He says: “Look, he says that since you now have such a large amount of jewelry, I can’t even give you the 300,000 dollars that I need to bring you. I can only give you now 150,000 thousand dollars for the jewelry that you gave me a few days ago because I thought it was only that amount. All this is now disturbing the story.” And of course that’s where Sulak got annoyed, but was cool. He acted like he wasn’t upset. He took the envelope with 150,000 dollars, put it in his purse. They continued the story. At that moment, a beautiful girl walked past them. The rich Arab asked, “Is this girl famous? Do you know her?” He says: “No, I’m seeing her for the first time.” She just looked at them. she went outside and lit a cigarette from a guy who was standing next to the bar. And then Sulak said: “It must be the girlfriend of that guy next to the bar.” He says: “No, those are my shooters from the Belgian mafia. I took them as bodyguards because I have to meet with people who work for the Basque Country. And the one next to that guy, that young man is an Irishman from the IRE. And they are my people. I have to give them some money and weapons. And I have obligations to them as well. So 25% and I’ll buy you a complete set of jewelry tomorrow and you go on your way.” However, at that moment Sulak lit a cigarette. He said, “Okay, if you think so, I have no choice. I expected more money. I don’t know how to explain it to my team, but I have no choice.” And while they were talking, as soon as Sulak lit a cigarette, he dropped it, whether intentionally or unintentionally. He bent down as if to pick her up from the floor and fell. And at that moment, three guys with automatic rifles run in and start shooting. They fired over 200 bullets. They also killed the fat Moroccan man and they killed the two guys next to the bar. As for Sulak, not a single bullet was fired at him. They turned and went outside. And immediately after this shooting, while everyone was still in shock, Sulak got up, took his bag and ran out of the hotel. And only the Hilton employees could know that the security cameras were not working at that moment. Nothing was recorded at that moment, so whenever some of those big spectacular murders happen in those famous hotels, for reasons known only to them, the security cameras don’t work. And of course Sulak ran out. His friend Treći was waiting for him there, and they fled from the scene in a direction known to them. The next day, both of them met in Bijarica in a cafe. They had a drink there. Sulak asked the Third if he brought the complete jewelry from the box? He said, “Yes, I have a bag with all the jewelry, just as you left me.” According to Sulak’s estimation, it was about 15 kg. Then Sulak took out that envelope with 150,000 dollars. He took out $50,000 and said this: “The third $20,000 is for you. Give Steve $30,000. And I need $100,000 because I have to go meet the Basques in person in Spain right now, because after this incident we can’t do this work here. And you go rent a car right now and go back to Paris.” And the Third said: “Ok, I’m coming back, because I’m sure Steve is very angry because we haven’t heard from him for 10 days.” And of course, there Sulak said to the Third: “Look, explain to him that we were not in a situation to call because of wiretapping. And tell him that we had business with the IRA and with the Arabs. Also explain to him how this all happened at the Hilton, that it was not my intention to spill blood. However, I broke in that they planned to liquidate me. And that’s why I hired Corsican shooters who did this work for us. I also have to pay them 50,000 dollars for the work done. That’s why I keep a larger amount of money.” And of course the Third said, “Boss you know everything that is best for us. I will convey everything to Steve as you said. And I will see you at the appointed place at the appointed time.” And of course everyone went to their side. As he left, Third Sulak watched as he brought a large bag of jewelry and placed it in Sulak’s BMW. And the Third went in a rented car back to Paris as they had agreed. And now what happens next? While the Third is traveling to Paris, Sulak tries to cross the Franco-Spanish border, which at that time was perhaps one of the most guarded borders in the world due to Basque terrorism. And of course the police stopped a young man who had Belgian plates on his car and had a Yugoslav passport issued just two weeks before, in fact he has only crossed one border from Belgium to France and now he is going to Spain. Nothing would be strange. But to that customs officer, all of that somehow hurt his eyes, especially the newest BMW and also the gold Rolex watch that the young Yugoslav had. He asked him: “Good Jovanovic, what are you doing in Belgium?” He said he was a car dealer. And the same thing that caught the ear of an experienced policeman is that the young man speaks perfect French. He asked him: “Where were you born?” And he said: “Well, I was born in Kragujevac and I finished high school there. And after coming to Belgium, I finished university and now I’m an experienced car dealer.” However, even if all that were so, the speech that a Yugoslav from Belgium would speak would be completely different French from the French that is spoken in France. Because the guy spoke with an accent that is spoken right in the vicinity of Marseille, because the customs officer was also from Marseille. And he said, “Okay, this is all nice, but you have to go out and have a chat.” And of course Sulak came out. He sat down in the office to have a conversation. He asked him: “What do you have of things?” He said, “Just personal.” Because the difference between the time when Sulak crossed the border and when he parted ways with Treći in Bijarica was almost three hours. During those three hours, Bruno Sulak went to a private bank and left an envelope with 100,000 dollars there. And he left 18 kg of jewelry that was valued at over 50 million dollars. And he said that he doesn’t know why the police have detained him now, that he is looking for a lawyer, that he be provided with a lawyer. The policeman said, “Don’t worry, the lawyer will arrive soon.” And at that moment, his colleague already called Commissioner Georges Moreas and said: “Mr. Commissioner, I think I have your man you are looking for.” And this one asked him: “Who exactly do you mean?” He says, “I mean one of the Kill on Sight.” And the commissioner immediately called for a helicopter and headed for Biarritz. Of course after a few hours he entered the office and saw Bruno Sulak. He sat down at the table next to him and said, “Bruno, you were right. You said we’d see each other soon. And I’m glad to see you.” Of course, everything was clear to Bruno Sulak now, that he no longer needed to pretend to be a Yugoslav who was accidentally stopped. He knew he was under arrest. And that happened on February 9, 1984. And all the news reported that Bruno Sulak was arrested. Steve was watching the same news. The Third was watching the same news in a cafe in Paris as soon as he arrived . I don’t know what to say, but most likely it was a big shock for them because nowhere was it mentioned that something was found with Bruno Sulak. But later in the same news the day after it was reported that no jewelry was found with Bruno Sulak, nor a large amount of money, only a few thousand dollars. He was immediately transferred by helicopter to the remand prison in Bordeaux. There, he was assigned a special cell and told that he would be held until a trial date was set. And as for Novica Živković, because now they already knew that Radiša Jovanović’s name is actually Novica Živković and they knew his nickname Steve. As for him, they will try to arrest him as soon as possible and to join him in Sulak’s trial. Now what exactly is going on at Steve’s place? Steve went crazy. First of all, he was furious because Sulak tried to leave for Spain without an agreement. He thought he had tried to trick him, to trick him. Also when he met with the Third he asked him: “Okay where is the jewelry?” He said: “I gave it to Sulak. But as far as I can see, it wasn’t with him. So he gave it to someone, or he hid it somewhere. Maybe someone was waiting for him.” The first person he thought of that might have been waiting for him, Steve thought of was Sulak’s sister. And he decided to visit her in Bordeaux. And that’s what he did. He leaves secretly. He didn’t tell Treje either, he didn’t tell anyone from his team that he was going to see Pauline. He wanted to ask her if she had the jewelry by any chance and if she knew where it was. He went there, saw Polina. She was scared. She was scared for a reason because she thought maybe Steve was being followed by the police or something. She worried about her brother Bruno. She didn’t know what to do. She said that she didn’t know how the arrest came about and that she had no idea where the jewelry was and that she was going to go with the lawyer to try to find out something from Bruno and she would pass it on to Steve. However, she did not learn anything from Bruno, nor could Bruno tell her. He was under strict control. The only thing Pauline found out was that Bruno goes out for a walk every day at 12 o’clock and stays for 45 minutes and walks alone on the grounds of the prison. And what did Pauline do now? She was reunited with Steve as they were agreed and she told him everything she learned from her brother Bruno: That he didn’t try to deceive Steve, that she would give him the code and the name of the bank where the jewelry is. And that he does not take any measures in terms of his release. However, crazy Steve could not accept it. He had some other plan of his own. And what did he do? He made a meeting with the Peasant, with his trusted man from the South Underworld, and with the Third. And they agreed to go together to the Dragignon airport near Bordeaux and rent a helicopter there, which will be driven by a pilot whom Steve met through Sulak. And that they will go exactly at the specified time when the walk is on Sunday, say March 20, and that they will kidnap him. He will lower the ladder. He will copy the story and steal it. And it will spoil the story because Steve will convey to Sulak through his sister Pauline the time when he will be kidnapped. And of course that’s what Steve did. Treji and Seljak told him that it was very risky and that he had too much trust in Polin herself and Sulak himself and that they could set him up. However, Steve did not pay attention to all these warnings. He chose the exact time when he would go to rent a helicopter for the action. And he didn’t report it to his friend Seljak, nor did he report it to his friend Treć. He just told his fiancee that he was leaving the day before his birthday on March 12 to finish something in Bordeaux. And he is coming home for his birthday to Paris where he will celebrate his 28th birthday together with his girlfriend . And he set off for Bordeaux. And he was extremely careful. And he didn’t go by car. He went by train because he knew that trains and buses are the least controlled. And before he left, he gave the phone number of a journalist whom his girlfriend, Colleen, would call and who would give the tapes that Novica had dictated so that this journalist could write a book. And she did it exactly as Steve told her to. And of course she started preparing for Steve’s birthday. She called her own sister Natalie. She also went shopping. She bought a present for Steve. She ordered a cake. And she wanted it all to be so pompous. And Steve himself planned to propose to her that day on his 28th birthday. And now I don’t understand him. He plans it all . And regardless of all this happened with Sulak, he had a large amount of money. And I guess he left something there while he was in Brazil in a secret account. I don’t know what he needed all this for? He goes to Bordeaux for Dragignon to rent a helicopter and organize an expensive operation to release Sulak from prison. There, two Corsicans were waiting for him in Bordeaux. He made an agreement with them to go to Dragignon in order to rent a helicopter there for the next week. They drove him. He gave them half the money now, and half the money after the action was done. They were supposed to find the helicopter driver who was also a former legionnaire. And he had confidence in everything. I just can’t understand his concept of the brain. He is a criminal after all. Why does he trust all these people now? Why didn’t he look to make the most normal story, that is, escapes? They now have Sulak, they are satisfied. They know that Sulak knows where the gold is and where the money is. And in contrast he has a certain amount that he deposited safely in Brazil. I don’t know why he didn’t think of running away from France with his fiancee? Or first to delete? Then, of course, she should come too. Or did he simply run away to Yugoslavia first? Then from Yugoslavia, let him go wherever he wants. That was the safest for him. What is he doing? He goes with the Corsicans to rent a helicopter. And just a few hours before the train arrived in Bordeaux, someone called Commissioner George and said: “George, tomorrow morning between 7 and 10 a man will show up to rent a helicopter.” And he hung up. And Commissioner George called his entire Anti-Gang Brigade. He selected the best snipers and marksmen and headed to Dragignon Airport near Bordeaux. They arrived there by special helicopters. They made an ambush and waited for the morning of March 13, 1984. And exactly as it was said in that short phone call at 8:15 a.m. a red Renault 5 appeared. And only one man got out of the car and headed towards the entrance of the airport and he was visibly limping on his left leg. They knew right away that it was Steve. And everyone knew that he was always armed with two Colts. They immediately inserted a bullet into the tube and waited for the order of their boss. And he said: “We will not shoot until he reaches the very entrance.” And so it was. At 8 a.m. and 3 p.m minutes Steve found himself at the airport gate. And as soon as the door opened, a big bang was heard. Steve’s body flew back several meters and fell crumpled. He was all riddled. According to the autopsy, 86 bullets hit this young man, eight of them in the head. He was simply crushed. He had absolutely no chance of surviving this encounter with the police pipes. And at that moment, the car with the Corsicans had already moved far away. One thing is for sure, the Corsicans certainly did not sell Steve. And who told the cops that he was going to show up at exactly that time? This is someone who was very close to Steve. Because the Corsicans did not know exactly when they would go to the Dragoon Airport, nor did they know that they should go to that airport, until they met Steve at 7 o’clock in the morning. So they only knew that they needed to secure the pilot, but they didn’t know about any action or anything. So they didn’t sell it. That is something that is certain. Someone who sold it had many strong reasons. I even think it’s a woman. Regardless of the fact that later Georges Moreas said it was a man, I think it was a woman. And you decide for yourself which woman this story is about. What happens next? All the newspapers and the entire French television broadcast the news immediately at 9:00 a.m. that the number one enemy of the Kill on Sight action, Novica Živković aka Steve, 28 years old, had been killed. Novica Živković was killed on March 13, exactly on the day of his 28th birthday, in an action that was implemented after the Second World War and until today only against him. And now at that moment the cake for his 28th birthday arrives and the champagne arrives. His fiancee is holding champagne in her hand and looking at the beautiful cake and looking at the beautiful gifts she bought the day before. When she heard the news on the 9 o’clock news that her fiance had been killed, she dropped a bottle of champagne and fainted. In the Black Cat Cafe, Treći was sitting with the landlady and talking. And while the announcer was announcing the event on television, the landlady just fainted. The third one knew that something terrible had happened, although he didn’t even hear what the announcer was announcing on television. He turned around, saw Steve’s picture and everything was clear to him. He drank the whiskey he ordered and immediately went to the apartment. A great panic arose among the Serbian emigrants . And immediately at 12 o’clock there was a raid in all of Paris and about 90 Serbian emigrants were arrested for various reasons. Of course, everyone was looking for the Third. An actor was also arrested , who was detained for an informative interview and released because the man had never been involved in crime. And most likely, someone informed the police that he drove Seljak to the airport just two days before to go to Belgrade. However, Seljak changed his mind. He did not get on the plane to Belgrade. He went to Lyon. And when this happened, he returned to Paris and told the actor that he had arrived and was waiting for him at the Šuma cafe. And there came the actor. He talked to him and they agreed on how to organize themselves to survive these days in the sense that everyone was somehow directly or indirectly involved in hiding and covering up Steve’s actions. And they knew that the police would now retaliate. However, that retribution was not so terrible. All of them were held in pre-trial detention for a maximum of a few months and were released. What is certain is that Sulak remained in prison in Bordeaux. He was in the isolation block and had no contact with other prisoners. He had no right to listen to the news and didn’t know what was happening outside. He only heard the prisoners shouting: “Murderers! Murderers! Murderers!” And banging their little hands on the prison bars. The whole prison turned into one big beehive. At that moment, Sulak did not know what was happening outside. However, after about an hour, he heard his cell being unlocked. And when the door opened, Georges Moreas was standing there. He went inside. He sat down on the chair that was next to the table in Sulak’s cell. He looked at Sulak who was sitting on the bed at that moment and said to him: “Bruno I had no choice. I had to kill him. I killed Steve. He tried to hijack the helicopter this morning and free you.” That’s what Georges Moreas told Sulak. At that moment Sulak stood up. He stood next to the wall and just lowered himself down the wall into a crouching position. And so he stood for two days. He didn’t move, he didn’t take food or water. “He cried” that’s what they said prison guards. It was only on the third day that he went out for a walk. And after a week, he was transferred to the strictest French prison in Paris, where he was supposed to await trial for all the charges against him. He rejected the lawyer by saying that it no longer matters to him how many years he will be sentenced to, because the moment Novica Živković was killed, he was also killed. Did it really shake Bruno that much or not? But he continued his prison days in a French prison. and what is important to say, he did not rest. This brilliant young man tried to execute, no less than the young warden of the prison who was the wing of the judiciary of Mitterrand’s government. How did he recruit him? By starting a casual conversation with him at the hearing. And he began to tell him about his time spent in the great metropolises of the world and about his good life. And he actually wanted to let him know that his life was actually monotonous, which this young man was really made aware of in some way. And he began to think: “Well, what kind of life am I living? Here I am now playing the role of a prison warden. And there is no less than the number one bandit in France, Arsene Lupin, whom everyone admires. They want to make a movie about him. He tells me about beautiful girls, about adventures. And I have not experienced all that and I never will.” And then Bruno once asked him: “Okay, what is your annual salary?” And he said so much and so much. Bruno laughed and said, “Steve and I used to spend it in one night at Maxim’s or Crazy Horse.” And what did this young man do? He checked and found the information to be correct. What happens next ? About 100,000 letters from all over the world came to the French prison every month. The girls simply adored Bruno Sulak. They wrote so many love letters that all the prison guards were jealous of Bruno. And in a way, they were saying: “If only we had one day to live like Bruno Sulak.” And Bruno, thank God, he had such an imagination that he probably magnified not 10 times, but 100 times. To some girls, he even answered those letters. He couldn’t read 100,000 letters a month. Well, I think the man received a couple of thousand letters a day. The man became the most popular prisoner in Europe. Writers also came to interview him. They talked to him and wrote several books about his turbulent life. He became a mega star. And what happens? Not only did the girls love him, the press and the media. In a way, the warden of the prison also liked him. And once, after one walk, Bruno asked for an extraordinary meeting with the manager. And I must mention that in the history of the French judiciary, Bruno Sulak was the only prisoner who had a conversation with the warden every day. And imagine that the warden of the prison was the generation of Bruno Sulak, who at that moment is 28 and he is 29 years old. I mean just unbelievable, but true. And not only that, but the prison is full of young guards to whom the warden is a role model. And therefore, Bruno Sulak becomes an idol as well as their manager. And what happens next? After one walk, Bruno Sulak asks for an emergency meeting with the manager. She goes to him and says: “My sister will come to your place and after the visit she will meet you for a drink in the city where you say.” This one says: “And why?” He says, “Well, let him give you $100,000.” The warden says, “Please?” He says, “That he will give you $100,000.” And he says: “And why? So you can organize my escape. And after that you will get a million.” The warden just kept silent and said, “Bruno, our conversation is over.” He called the guards and they brought Bruno Sulak out. For two weeks since then, the manager has not heard from Bruno Sulak. And Bruno thought he had misjudged the man for the first time. This skilled manipulator thought he had screwed up after all and said: “It was not for nothing that French security appointed this young man as the warden of France’s strictest prison. I was wrong.” And after two weeks while Bruno walked deliberately in the rain, he didn’t want to stop his walk. And while he was thinking like that and trying to cool his thoughts with the rain that was cooling him, immediately after the walk he was told to change and that the manager was waiting for him in his office. Bruno was happy. He went to that meeting. And no less than the manager said to him: “I thought about it, but I can’t do that job myself. It has to be done by the guards that I will engage. And for that I need 2 million.” Sulak was silent. He extended his hand, shook his hand as a sign of friendship. He left the cell never happier. It was agreed, meaning the date and time and everything. And exactly on March 18, 1985, at 2 a.m. as agreed, Bruno Sulak was supposed to be in the officer’s canteen, locked in a closet. And how did he get there? Because he had a special key delivered to him. That special key opens all the locks in He got out of his cell. He went to the officer’s hall . He went in and hid in his cell. And then he got out of the prison without being noticed. I right where the laundry room was, there was a car waiting for him to get into where the driver was waiting for him to get out of the prison. He didn’t even know who would be waiting for him in the car. And what actually happened? Something unexpected happened. That day, a man came to be the head of the shift because one guy got sick and told him to replace him. And the one who came, he never looks at the clock, the electronic one who is in prison, but looks at his watch, and he was in a hurry for two minutes. And he started to tour all the rooms with the guards. It is a tour that takes place every hour. He started his tour two minutes early. Among other things, one of the guards entered the officer’s canteen and heard something banging loudly in a closet. And when they opened the closet, no less than a man in a police uniform ran out of it. And he ran to the window, hit the window and threw himself into the abyss. He fell from a height of more than 10 m and simply smashed down. Of course, the action of setting off the explosives was stopped immediately because the guard who was supposed to do it electronically, when it happened, stopped the action immediately, he ran away. When the policemen went to see who threw themselves out of the window, they saw that it was actually the prisoner Bruno Sulak, who was holding a key in his hand that could unlock any prison lock. And immediately the head of the guard service called Commissioner Georges Moreas and said that the main inmate of the prison had just attempted suicide. The man couldn’t believe it at first when he was called at 2:50 a.m. in the morning. Ali immediately ordered a special helicopter and flew to the prison. As soon as he walked in, he knew something was seriously messed up in the prison’s security system. Sulak’s cell was also searched. A huge amount of explosives were found there, which had been planted and were supposed to be activated at exactly two hours and two minutes. However, no one could have predicted that the man would go on a tour of the prison on his own watch. And what happens next? George ordered a special investigation into the prison’s internal controls. And it was immediately clear to him that the manager was involved in all of this. And when they brought the manager into custody, he immediately confessed to everything. He said that everything was organized by him in cooperation with two other guards who planted the explosives. And that he personally waited for Sulak at the laundromat in order to drive him to freedom. And it would probably be one of the most spectacular escapes in the history of French prisons. However, fortunately or unfortunately, it did not happen. Sulak was seriously injured. They fought for his life in Paris hospitals for nine whole days. And after nine days he died on March 27. The warden of the prison was sentenced to 15 years in prison for accepting bribes. These two guards who participated in the organization of Sulak’s escape were also sentenced to five years each . No one accused Sulak’s sister of giving bribes and money to the warden of the prison. As far as I know, she also published some books about Bruno Sulak. By leaving this world, Sulak also took the secret of where the money and jewelry from their robberies, estimated at around 50 million dollars, was actually. What happens later after Sulak’s death? After Sulak’s death, they also arrested the Third, who was later released with the help of some Yugoslav politicians for reasons known only to them, that is, he was released to defend himself from freedom. After a few months, he also ran away to a place known only to him. He too has been officially listed as a missing person by the French police since January 16, 1986. As for the events that are interesting and should be mentioned: It is that the director of the company led by Anthony Delon was killed at a crossroads in Paris. while waiting at the traffic light. He was approached by two young men on motorcycles who had tinted helmets and fired 28 bullets at him. And what is interesting, the police immediately ordered that his apartment be placed under special surveillance so that it would be searched the next morning. During the night, exactly around 12 o’clock in the evening, no less than Anthony Deon appeared and tried to break down the door of his director’s apartment with a lever and enter that apartment. And when the police came running, when they arrested him while breaking down the door, they asked him: “What is he looking for in the apartment of his director who was liquidated that day?” He said he came to return the lever for the car. Imagine a statement. Of course Anthony Delon was taken to the police. He was detained for 48 hours . And with the help of a powerful father, immediately after the expiration of 48 hours, he was released. During the search of director Anthony Delon’s apartment, almost complete jewelry was found that was robbed in a jewelry store in Cannes. Only the Pink Panther lighter was not found. And do you know why? Because it was in the pocket of that Moroccan who was killed in the Hilton Hotel in Deauville while talking to Bruno Sulak. Now, what does it all have to do with it or not? I don’t know that. But after the murder of this director and the discovery of this jewelry, eight more bank directors who participated in laundering Sulak’s money from robberies were arrested. And some directors of some well-known jewelry stores were also arrested. Only the owner of the famous Cartier was not arrested. And now, did he have any collusion with this team? I cannot claim that now. But there are many, many strange things about this whole story. Many people were arrested. And as Commissioner George himself said: “This is one of the most mysterious things that happened in post-war French crime. And it turns out that everything is involved: High crime and high politics and high banking and high show business.” Now, is it all true or is it just Commissioner George’s imagination? Judge for yourself. But what is certain, and that is the following story, which is actually the point of my entire evening as I tell you this: It is that this team has become a role model, unfortunately a role model for many young men who operated under the name Pink Panther all over the world. Over 1,500 young men were arrested from the territory of the former Yugoslavia who allegedly belonged to the Pink Panther organization, which never had its own leader, and which always operated independently in smaller gangs. But because of the style because of the work they are all called the Pink Panthers. All bandits from the territory of the former Yugoslavia who rob diamonds and gold are immediately called members of the Pink Panther organization. And what I can say to all the young people who listened to me tonight: Don’t let Novica Živković Steve be your role model. Because he also went as a guy with big dreams to the city of light where he experienced darkness. Where he was killed as a beast, as a person Kill on sight. And he was brought back and buried in his place as a mere pauper with nowhere to go. And that’s why, young people, take heart. Earn your daily bread by honest work. I know it’s unprofitable. I know that it cannot arrange expensive champagnes, the most luxurious cars, beautiful girls. But what you have is the most beautiful. A woman or a girl with whom you can have a peaceful sleep is the most beautiful story in life. And so don’t sell your peaceful sleep, especially not the peaceful sleep of your family, for any antics . Let this be a warning. And we’ll see you in the next show Crime from the Shadows.
