I just arrived in Wanaka, a stunning lakeside town on New Zealand’s South Island — and what I found here genuinely surprised me. From the moment I pulled in, it felt like I’d stepped into a postcard. Surrounded by stunning peaks and crystal-clear water, Wanaka feels like the kind of place you hear about in whispers… a hidden paradise you almost don’t want to share.
In this video, I explore the town, soak in the calm beauty of Lake Wanaka, and hit the trails on a mountain bike — only to unexpectedly stumble across a local beer and wine festival called RIPE. Locals, music, incredible food and drinks — it was the kind of surprise that makes travel so unforgettable.
The next day, I take on one of the most iconic hikes in the country: Roys Peak. The climb was no joke, but the view at the top? Worth every step. If you’re planning a trip to New Zealand or just dreaming of epic scenery and small-town vibes, don’t sleep on Wanaka. This place is something special.

I'm a Retired Kiwi who owned Christchurch's best Thai restaurant for over a decade, Keo's. Have many Thai friends here still, my two favorite countries are Aotearoa New Zealand and Thailand. Chalk and cheese but the people make both places special. Trust you enjoyed your Kiwi experience, come back soon, cheers mate. By the way 40 years ago I jogged up Roy's Peak, memories, now I'd struggle to rum to the corner shop. Bugger, enjoy your youth.

Wow Paddy – . Great videos …ethereal music… great views. Thanks. Do plan to return one day for a more extensive and perhaps less expensive tour . As a local I think we are overpricing ourselves out of the global tourist market. – I don't want us to become the bolt hole for fleeing Billionaires such as is happening in Central Otago and the Queenstown area where much of the land and developments are now owned offshore.

Wanaka is my number one spot in NZ. I did Roys Peak in my early 40’s. It’s a killer hike but oh so worth the pain! Standing up there felt like the top of the world – just breathtaking. Thanks for the fab video! ❤️

I loved the way you edited the music when showing the festival. Multiple shots but the music continued to play, utterly convincing that it was what was playing in the background as you walked about. Nice touch!
Can't wait for your next journey. Just done Roy peak few days ago for the sunrise and started at 3.30AM. We are blessed with very clear sky and a good view of stars & milky way on the way up and spectacle view of the sunrise.
Unpredictable weather is the challenge part for our trip but god bless 9/10 its a very desire weather and what we wish for.
What NZ offer is just unbelievable seeing with your own eyes and be there in the moment.

Don't sleep on Wanaka ? Theres already way too many tourists in town another 5 yrs and it will be a nightmare like Queenstown has turned into !!
I knew you would enjoy New Zealand, I have visited there 3 times, 2 Times on the Magic Bus tours and the last time I cycled on my own from Auckland to Christchurch Camping and Hostaling all the way, took me about 2 weeks, best thing I have ever done. Note I had never travelled anywhere on a bicycle before, there was some real challenging times including Volcanoes and extreme winds, but I completed the entire trip 50yrs of age:-)

When you go to the North island next time the Tongario Volcano Crossing is well worth the hike (done twice before)

This series has made me tear up more than once. I feel so lucky to be born here, New Zealand is so beautiful and I'm grateful ❤ sometimes I need to see it through somebody else's eyes because the day to day of life can really make me lose sight of how good I've got it.
