This time I am visiting Scotland’s most accessible island, Great Cumbrae. Due to the short ferry 10-minute Calmac ferry crossing, Cumbrae island is a popular day-trip destination. Despite its small size, this Scottish island is home to around 1,300 residents.

The Isle of Great Cumbrae’s 10-mile loop road is a popular cycling route and takes about an hour to complete at a leisurely pace. If you don’t have a bike with you, bike rentals are available in Millport.

Join me as I explore the Isle of Great Cumbrae!

WHO AM I?
If we haven’t met before… Hi, I’m Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

  1. Great footage, I'm definitely saving for one of those cameras, hopefully they work better at night than my current cameras, which are terrible in low light… Looks like you can change from fisheye to normal easy enough, which looks really cool, it's looks like a mini drone constantly following you..

  2. Great video Ruth – thanks. When I was a lad back in the 50s, "Millport" as we always referred to the island, was the No 1 place to go as an organised group with the BB for charity fund raising "Round the Island: bike rides. I wonder if it still is?

  3. Hi Ruth , usually love your videos but this one I found the distortion using your camera very unpleasant . I also have an inbuilt objection to adverts especially since I pay good money to youtube for ad free transmission . Is this a breach of contract ???? Sorry could'nt cope with the whole vid , but I do understand the temptation for you and others to pick up an extra few quid , your reply would be appreciated . Mike in Exeter xx

  4. Yet another great vlog. One of my favourite channels. Can't help but notice, though, you weren't wearing a cycle helmet. I know there is not much traffic, but if you hit a pothole and fall off hitting your head, you could regret the decision not to wear one 😢

  5. Always enjoy your vlogs, and look forward to the next ones. Have to say that I can only take limited sequences of fish eye / 360 imagery. It distorts the surroundings way too much, and is a bit headache-inducing!

  6. Ruth, thank you for another great video. You have introduced me to another part of Scotland I want to visit! I have to admit, I’m a little jealous, how interesting it must be to make a living exploring the beautiful country of Scotland and sharing your adventures. I can see a use for the 360 camera, but I don’t care for the fish eye view, it distorts the scenery. However, I would never force my opinion on others. I like how you interspersed the 360 with the conventional camera views, that provides some variety of views. Anywho, thanks again for sharing with us. Looking forward to the next adventure! Cheers!

  7. I love your videos. Returning to Scotland (I live in Canada and have visited your country twice) is on my bucket list and you've shown lots of great places to see. Good use of the Insta360 camera, too! I use them for my videos and they let you get angles that are difficult for other video cameras. Keep up the great work, Ruth!

  8. Being a Southern fairy from London…. Scotland had never really appealed to me, I was more a venture to Cornwall type lady…. well, that was until I found Ruth's channel! What an amazing country! I really aim to visit this year! Thank You Ruth x

  9. Hi Ruth. Thanks for another entertaining video. I do not like the camera shots that were taken with this video. The reason is that it distorts the views and you lose actual sizes and distances in view. This effect is commonly used in the US by real estate agents showing sizes of rooms etc. I don't feel this will improve your already nice video style. Thanks, really enjoy your efforts.

  10. Thank you Ruth, for braving the cold and the wind to bring us a fantastic video of this gem of an island. Your passion and enthusiasm for exploring is inspiring. The views you captured were jaw opening. What a truly beautiful country we have, right on our doorstep. You have inspired myself and friends to take up the same challenge. We truly love your videos and hope for many more. Thank you Ruth, we love you. xx

  11. Ruth, you have the most original and most “sense aware” experiences of what it means to travel, no matter where you are. I think you have a number one Travel influencer channel on YouTube. I’m just saying honestly without any hesitation I love it.

  12. Thanks for the interesting video! The new camera takes very nice shots. My only suggestion is to use it for outdoors and large indoor areas, but not inside smaller buildings like the chapel. The 360 shot distorts the image so much in a small space that it was hard to look at and it isn’t possible to appreciate the architecture, etc. 😊

  13. I really enjoy watching your videos! I can feel your enthusiasm and excitement with nature and is refreshing to see the joy you have for life. Your courage and independence is inspiring! You have a forever fan in Tennessee (USA)

  14. Husband is enjoying this little trip. About 1988 we were in Cebu and one of my wife’s cousin asked if I wanted to go for a bike ride. I am age 45 at this time and didn’t think there would be a problem even if I hadn’t ridden for many years. You never forget how. When we got back after perhaps a total of 45 minutes total riding. My legs and back side were very sore.

  15. Another great watch!…the insta is good tech….clever!…
Watching this in Adelaide… normally Inverness..
    . loving the heat…hate cold!!
    Cheers!

  16. Ah so many holiday memories of Millport, scene of almost every family holiday in my childhood/teen years up to 1985 which was our last holiday just before I turned 17. We always stayed in a various single ends/small houses with external toilets. That necessitated packing the "pee pail" when we were young to save going to the outside loo in the night. When I learned how to cycle I spent hours going round and round the island, especially in my teens to get some freedom, going one way, then the other. The island was always hoachin' with people on holiday in the summer, and the day trippers on the Keppel, the car ferry and the Waverly. Happy days.

Edit – there are a number of interesting rock formations on the island, such as the "Indian Rock" you spotted through the trees on the NW side, the "Lion Rock" on the SE side as you close in on the town, the "Crocodile Rock" in the middle of the town, and there was even a headland just on the start of the stretch into the town (called Marine Parade) which for a time looked a little like an older Queen Victoria in profile.

  17. Wow! Thanks so much for the video. Fully enjoyed and wonderful about the 360 camera. Wonderful 💯
God bless to all the nice people around the world

  18. Hi Ruth, we had a great trip around Dumfries and Galloway in our van last September, largely prompted by your videos – then we travelled on to Great Cumbrae and stayed for a couple of nights on the exact same pitch where you parked Ernie! (only one other van even then). It's nice to know that we managed to discover somewhere lovely, even in advance of your recommendation 🙂

  19. I’m also not a fan of the distortion. But I get the problems with the drone. It’s just that I love your photography generally, but I get a bit dizzy looking at curved pictures racing by, and that makes it hard to pay attention to what you’re saying, which I really want to hear.

  20. I really love your stuff Ruth, but as a 'virtual' friend, I have to tell you that you did drift a bit with this one.
It became like a protracted paid promotion regarding the camera, which isnt your usual output.
I have seen this become a thing with other channels and have unsubscribed as a YouTube Premium user.
I fully understand you wanting to maximise your income, however just don't lose sight of what brought us all here in the first place.
    Keep up that good work.
