Guatemala keeps on giving, and we haven’t even left the area surrounding Antigua! This video captures some of the best day trips from the city of Antigua, starting with the most popular day hike to Volcán de Pacaya and ending with a thrilling cycle ride through the towns surrounding Antigua, Guatemala.

Just an hour and a half from downtown Antigua is the most popular day trip that tourists go on in Antigua. The hike to Pacaya Volcano is not hard, and offers great views on a clear day (which we had for roughly 3 minutes). With our guides Joel and Omar, we climbed to the main viewpoint in less than an hour! Evie did amazing and loved meeting other volcano dogs on the way up. While Joel got our lunch prepared, Omar took us to the most incredible place – the petrified lava field on Pacaya Volcano. We have never seen anything like this before. There was steam coming up from the ground and the fog settled into the cater to give the lava field this eerie feel that perfectly matched the environment.

Using the grounds natural heat (this is a volcano after all),Omar handed out marshmallows androasted them right in the ground! We had read that most tours did this, and we thought it might be gimmicky, but it was honestly so cool to see the earth cook our marshmallows. After soaking in the landscape that looked like Mars, we had an incredible lunch with absolutely no view (but there definitely could have been one!), before heading back down the volcano.

Hiking Pacaya Volcano is an excellent day trip from Antigua for anyone, but we were especially grateful to see this be an option for families traveling with kids, or travelers who have some mobility restrictions. Or just tourists who don’t want to hike Acatenango, which is a very hard hike (but is amazing if you’re able to do it).

Next, we got on some pedal bikes for the first time in years, and rode our bikes through Antigua with our guide Christa. After exploring some of Antigua by bike, we left the city behind and headed into more rural areas. We made a very well timed stop at a chocolate shop to learn about chocolate in Guatemala (and to rest, let’s be honest), before hopping back on the bikes to weave our way through small streets watching local Guatemalan life happen in front of our handlebars. We ended up at a Macadamia farm before biking back to Antigua in the pouring rain (which was SO much fun!!).

There is so much to do in Guatemala as a tourist, and these two day trips from Antigua he been among our favourites so far. We love being active in our travels, and these two activities allowed us to do this while better understanding Guaetmala’s history, culture, and people.

  1. Did I miss it? Did you check out the bathrooms at Valhalla??? They also have incredible breakfasts there.

Thanks for video of Pacaya!!!! I know it's not Acatanengo but it's still a special hike!

  2. What a fantastic video! I totally loved it! The bike ride made me miss our place in Mazatlan. We will be there soon though. My Hubby and one of my sons has a bike there and I will get one eventually. He goes for a ride and tells me all about it! Haha. And because we don't have a place near the tourist zone, he rides to explore! Love it! ❤

  3. Amazing video guys, Thank you for visiting Guatemala and share all this wonderful adventures, hope everything goes well and good luck in all your next travels ❤

  4. Well I think I’ve seen all your videos I so enjoyed them all. I wrote a comment on a few. I still haven’t figured out how to show some support but I will keep trying. Take care and God bless.

  5. Amazing hike and bike ride! But what is this "meters" you speak of? Seriously, I admire your ability to smile/laugh through the obstacles in
life and not let those dictate the tone of your day. Also, how did you know the beetle larvae was a "he"? 😁

  7. Hiking in Guatemala is so beautiful (when you’re not stuck in those crazy clouds)! We didn’t a different hike when we visited to it is cool to see what we missed! I really wanted to do one of the tours with the smores or pizza made on the lava

  8. Was it a hilly ride? Looks like so much fun. I have signed up for things like this in the past and then realized th city is a huge hill and almost died 😂

From the official entrance I have hiked Pacaya 4 times and driven it twice in my 4×4 twice. The last time I hiked it was during the slow erosion in 2021 to watch the lave river. It was spectacular!

  11. Wow. Just wow.

Sad, too sad! The poor hungry dogs, and y’all think both funny an ok to feed any animals such non food! So inapprpriate. Embarrassed. Bring the poor hounds some beef jerky. Or a drink of water.

  12. Hello Nicole and Mico. If you go to Peten, to the North of Guatemala, you can go in a helicopter to visit the Danta Piramid. Have fun and enjoy Guatemala.
