Katata, located on the western shore of Lake Biwa in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, is a town steeped in history. During the medieval period, it thrived as a key hub for lake transportation, with the “Katata Lake People” forming a self-governed community engaged in fishing and shipbuilding. The town also inspired many literary works, including Yukio Mishima’s novel Silk and Insight (Kinu to Meisatsu).

Katata’s notable landmarks include the Ukimido (Mangetsu-ji Temple), famous as one of the Eight Views of Omi for its “Descending Geese at Katata,” as well as the canalside scenery of its preserved historic streets.
