Exploring South Korea’s “Failed” New Capital ๐ฐ๐ท
Is Sejong a failed city? From what Iโve seen online and in YouTube videos, you might think so. Many videos label Sejong as a failed government project. However, I decided to visit and see things for myself.
Yes, some parts of the city feel a bit empty, but other areas are bustling with shops and restaurants. The infrastructure is modern, with brand-new roads and streets. The parks are stunning, and the river running through the city adds to its charm. To me, it seems like an ideal place to raise a family. It has all the amenities of a big city, without the crowds and traffic. Plus, it has a fantastic jjimjilbang. What more could you want?
Thank you Chatgpt:
Sejong Special Autonomous City, established in 2012, was created to decentralize government functions from Seoul, reduce overcrowding, and promote balanced national development. While it has achieved significant progress as a planned administrative city, it has faced challenges in fully meeting its original goals. Many government ministries and agencies have relocated to Sejong, and the city boasts modern infrastructure, green spaces, and a high quality of life for residents. However, some key institutions, like the presidential office, remain in Seoul, leading to inefficiencies and frequent travel between the two cities.
Sejong has also struggled with attracting a large population and achieving the economic and cultural vibrancy of Seoul. Limited job opportunities outside the public sector and fewer cultural amenities have made it less appealing for businesses and young professionals. Additionally, transportation connectivity between Sejong and other major cities, especially Seoul, has been criticized as inadequate.
Despite these challenges, Sejong is not considered a failure. It has succeeded as a functional administrative city and improved living standards for its residents. However, its broader vision of reducing Seoulโs dominance and achieving balanced regional development remains a work in progress.

I have been enjoying your video since you arrived in Korea. You are heading into my hometown next. I'm living in the US now, but I was born and raised in Gongju. I'm looking forward to see how it got changed.
Most of the citizens are flocking to Seoul, so there are not many people around Seoul or in the countryside outside the city center, which looks a bit sad.

In the past, even German vlogger used the word "failed" to Sejong, which is wrong. the entire administration and the National Assembly have not yet come Into Sejong City. It is appropriate to use the word "developing," not "failed." Anyway, there are so many intermediate ads that I feel like the flow is cut off, will it be possible to adjust it next time?

It's not fail.
A serious effort was made by the government to create a new paradigm for urbanism with Sejong City. Unusually high level of attention was made to create a livable city that was in balance with the river and the mountains. The initial masterplan was won after an international design competition by a Spanish architect/ planner 20 years ago. The architect designed a city that was not densely organized but rather designed around a ring road that went over mountains and rivers such that residents were never far from nature.
I visited the city several times over the years and have been impressed by how well the initial concept of city to nature connectivity works. Sejong feels ,Ike no other Korean city because of this aspect. I thought it felt more like a European village in the Alps rather than a half million urban development in Korea. I would want to live there. In my opinion , this is a good example of how to build cities in the 21st century.
The sky-bridge district of connected buildings is the government district. American landscape architect Diane Balmori designed the masterplan for this district in another international competition. This area is the reason for Sejong City cause the governmental offices which was the original reason to move the countryโs capital city to Sejong are all housed here.
Thanks for the tour. Really nice to hear your thoughts on your visit.
The jjimjilbangs I go to in Seoul only give you two eggs ๐
As I have potential retirement in Korea I am interested in seeing many cities from an American perspective. I liked most places that you presented except Sejong. At least not for me.
I lived in Sejong for a few months in 2013, and while it was extremely new and clean, it felt like a ghost town. On weekends, it was almost completely deserted, likely because a lot of the government workers commuted from Seoul. Honestly, itโs surprising that, even after 10+ years, the situation doesnโt seem to have improved much.

Thank you for the Sejong City tour!
It's very interesting. I don't think it's been completed as an administrative capital yet, but Nick is the first person to see the city in such detail.
OMG. You passed my parentโs house in Bansoek. Welcome to Daejeon. ๐
I know some people who invested real estates there big time like 10 years ago. They're having a pretty hard time.

Many Koreans often speak negatively about Sejong City, but this is because more than half of the population lives in the metropolitan area, including Seoul, and they do not want to lose their leadership. However, I heard that the upcoming relocation of the National Assembly and the Presidential Office to Sejong City, and the social inefficiency caused by concentration in the metropolitan area, are creating a trend of the times for regional decentralization.
