2 Epic Cycling Trips on Amami Island [4K]
Amami Oshima is a stunning island south of Kyushu and north of the Okinawa island chain. The island belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture and even people who have been living in Japan for a long time may not have heard of it! It is just as stunning as Okinawa (if not more!) and a lot less touristy. We visited this tropical island for a week in October and were lucky to be spared typhoons and enjoyed about 25 degrees and sunshine every day.
In addition to kayaking, surfing, swimming and hiking, Amami is an amazing place for cycling. As most parts of the island are mountainous, it’s advantageous to have a proper road / gravel or mountain bike or even ebike.
Lucky for us, we found out on our first day that the local community centre has a new and luxurious fleet of electric road bikes which we were able to rent for a reasonable price. The people there were extremely friendly and we were also able to rent brand new bike bags, chains and phone holders for navigation. With the local town’s cycling map in hand, off we went!
In this video you can see the highlights of Amami’s north, including stunning ocean viewpoints, Amami’s world heritage nature observation forest, the island’s shortest tunnel (famous for sunset spots) and more. We cycled around the northern area, mainly along the coast, for two days (accompanied by a friend on the second day). Hope you enjoy it! It would definitely be worth bringing your own bike and embarking on a relaxed week-long cycle around the island.

You were right: that's an amazing adventure! Excellent video footage and editing. I'm heading to Sapporo in July and then to Okinawa in late August. Japan is an awesome place to visit and the natural beauty of the place blows my mind! Where will your next trip take you?
