Stuck On The UK’s Most Remote Island
I am stuck on St. Kilda, the UK’s most remote island. The St. Kilda archipelago sits in the Atlantic, about 110 miles from mainland Scotland, making it the most remote part of the British Isles.
I had planned to stay for two days and one night on this remote Scottish island, but as I prepared to leave, I discovered that my return boat hadn’t turned up….
If you are interested to learn more about St. Kilda, it’s UNESCO status, the evacuation of the island or about the birdlife and wildlife, make sure to watch my previous video which goes into much more detail about the island itself.

WHO AM I?
If we haven’t met before… Hi, I’m Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

Good luck, hopefully there’s a boat tomorrow in lieu of the one cancelled. Worst case scenario, get on that base, there’s always extra food. I’m sure they’d love your company.
Last but not least, the Vango Force 10 used to be the gold standard “in my day”. Use that as a baseline and get a tent you feel safe in along with some extra long tent pegs!! Good luck.
Could you not have slept in the museum Ruth?
Welcome as you begin to poke your head out of mommy’s cellar.
You are a brave lassie! To be camping by yourself. I used to go camping with my pals when I was in my teens, but there's no way my old body could do that now. Great video as always, take care.
I felt so sorry for you feeling all alone. Hugs
Little mice are like Hamsters, cute!
Ruth, I don’t understand dear. Why can you not stay in a cottage or other accommodations? Why only a tent is available for you ?
I must’ve missed all that part . If I were there, I would’ve gladly let you stay with me.❤
Hellos from Everett, Wash. Sunday 9"30 pm I watched this story earlier today up near the Canadian Border. Sometimes there are too many ads where comments
are so I could not post until We got home. That postmark from the island would be quite a treasure for stamp collectors.
Guess you'll be watching the new Saoirse Ronan film, The Outrun ?
Hey Ruth. It's been a while. It's getting cold and I came back to you. Lol.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Another wonderful and gloriously personal video.. thank you so much.Your endearing personality is so appreciated.
I relieved you to be able to back. Adventure is always with some risks. Take care yourself, Ruth.
Wonderful experience at St.Kilda, still waiting for………. c.w.
Hi Ruth. There is also a St Kilda down here in Nz. Near Dunedin, (our) Scotland of Nz. Good surfing too.One thing to always remember, with being on an island, is not to make plans with returning to the mainland. Always have a contingency plan. Because, you will always hear the response, yeah sure, we'll get you back, "Weather Permitting." Thank you for sharing. Atb from down here in Nz.
What an adventure. I can totally relate to when things go south and aren't in our control it can feel super frustrating, but you made the best of it in a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing!
Awful place, I was dive bombed by skuas and bullied by puffins. Seriously, it's the most remarkable place I've ever been, not that I'd want to be stranded there.
There's not many things that can spoil adventures more like irrational feelings and not knowing how to handle a tent in harsh conditions and how to deal with a mouse 😜
you need to make yourself familiar with basic camping and survival techniques … for choosing a location for your tent : if there is shelter from the wind, use it to the maximum, in your case you have a corner with one side facing the wind, use it !!! Set your tent up with the (closed) rear into the wind, and the opening facing away from the wind (and chasing rain, evt) … this also goes for your van : always set it up for the night with the nose in the wind (the van is made for driving fast forward, and supports heavy wind in that direction, but not (NOT) on the side !!!)
Just been slowly working my way through your back catalogue Ruth – fantastic content, keep up the great work. I live in the Netherlands now so it's good to see Bonnie Scotland again!
Waahhh hahhh. What a cry baby. Maybe you take up an indoor hobby.
Thank God you had us to talk to Ruth!
Thanks for sharing these videos. It's an island I have been interested in for many years but a place I never made it to. We got stuck once on the Isle of Rhum and it was 3 days before we could escape. I can imagine how tough it must have been continuing to film. Great job. Having a good tent makes a huge difference in these situations. Best wishes.x
Go Ruth.
I'm from Texas this woman in despair is breaking my heart I want to be there to just help her on her path and get the hell out of there!
Amazing woman!
Your adventurous nature is truly inspiring to others and the way you video document both your journey and your emotions honesty to your viewers is wonderful. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
You know when you see that perfect one in a billion and you just don't have the nuts basically !!!!! Yeah that's where I'm at.
Oh my goodness… I’d stay in the visitors centre if there was a mouse.. horrible things. Is there a lot!!🥹
You done it!!!! Love your honesty too, I’m surprised no one reached out that night, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger 💪xx
I was on a scuba diving trip to St Kilda back in the 80's. We were living aboard a good sized boat but we only had one night in the bay before a storm came out the Atlantic and chased us back to the Hebrides. In those days, there were no day trippers, no museum and I'm not even sure if the NT had people on the island for any length of time. But we did get an invite to the mess at the military base 🙂
Anyone would panic with that worry. Though a beautiful place, if you didn't except to become a permeant resident of St Kilda, you would be forgiven for being worried.
I would’ve put my blow up bed in the tourist shop for the night
