CRAZY! American Sees North Koreans For The First Time! ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ต (Bike Touring Korea #14)

Today, I get another glimpse into North Korea, but this time, I see ordinary North Koreans on the other side of the border. It was a pretty wild experience. It was an odd feeling just looking through the telescope and watching North Koreans go about their business.

When I was there, it also made me wonder how it feels for South Koreans when they come here and peer into the North. If you are Korean, if you don’t mind, how does it feel to go there and look into North Korea and see the people on the other side.

I met some more amazing people on this day as well. After being denied at the checkpoint, I went back into town and stopped at a 7-11 and met Mr. Chang. It was great timing in that he was getting off work and volunteered to take me up to the observatory.

  1. I ask the question in the video, if you don't mind sharing your thoughts, how does it feel as a Korean to come to the DMZ and look into North Korea?

  8. Good morning, Nick. Welcome back to Korea again. I am an old Korean (72 years old). I used to live in Houston, Texas for 7 years (1984 – 1991).

Gimpo and Ganghwa Island, which you visited, are close to the border with North Korea, so there could be conflicts over security issues. That's why there are many check points in those areas. The separation of South and North Korea is a tragedy, and we are trying to overcome it, but it is not easy. Older people like me want unification a lot, but young people seem to be gradually losing interest in unification, in my opinion.

Iโ€™ve found a related survey report regarding unification of South and North Koreas. The results of that survey conducted in 2023 were released which shows that less than half (49.8%) of elementary, middle, and high school students of South Korea nationwide think unification is necessary. According to the results of the '2023 School Unification Education Survey' released by the Ministry of Unification on March 16, 2024, only 49.8% of elementary, middle, and high school students nationwide think unification is necessary, while 11.3% responded that it is not necessary (38.9%) or that they 'don't know/are not interested.'

This is the result of a survey conducted by the Ministry of Unification and the Ministry of Education from October 20 to November 20 of last year with the cooperation of provincial and municipal offices of education across the country, targeting a total of 84,600 students from 756 elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. On the 16th March, 2024, the Ministry of Unification announced in a press release that the perception that 'unification is not necessary' was the highest since it was implemented in 2014 based on Article 8, Paragraph 4 of the Unification Education Support Act, which allows for an annual survey on unification education in elementary and secondary schools.

According to the survey results, the number of students who think that 'unification is necessary' has continuously decreased from 62.4% (2020) โ†’ 61.2% (2021) โ†’ 57.6% (2022) โ†’ 49.8% (2023), and in proportion, the perception that 'unification is unnecessary' has significantly increased from 24.2% (2020) โ†’ 25.0% (2021) โ†’ 31.7% (2022) โ†’ 38.9% (2023). Even including the 11.3% who responded that they 'don't know/are not interested', the positive perception that 'unification is necessary' has fallen by less than half. In particular, the number of respondents who responded that they are 'interested in unification' has also continuously decreased from 50.9% (2021) โ†’ 47.4% (2022) โ†’ 43.7% (2023), which is raising concerns.

In the case of teachers, the perception that 'unification is necessary' was 82.5%, far exceeding the perception that it is unnecessary (14.6%), but the response that 'unification is necessary' was confirmed to be gradually decreasing from 87.9% (2020) โ†’ 85.6% (2021) โ†’ 86.7% (2022) โ†’ 82.5% (2023). The response that 'I am interested in unification' remained at a relatively high level from 77.9% (2021) โ†’ 77.7% (2022) โ†’ 70.8% (2023). It seems that the inter-Korean relationship, which is heading towards confrontation, has led to a crisis of war, resulting in skepticism about interest in unification, its feasibility, and the benefits of unification. Hope the above will be of some help to you.
