Good morning, Nick. Welcome back to Korea again. I am an old Korean (72 years old). I used to live in Houston, Texas for 7 years (1984 – 1991).

Gimpo and Ganghwa Island, which you visited, are close to the border with North Korea, so there could be conflicts over security issues. That's why there are many check points in those areas. The separation of South and North Korea is a tragedy, and we are trying to overcome it, but it is not easy. Older people like me want unification a lot, but young people seem to be gradually losing interest in unification, in my opinion.

I’ve found a related survey report regarding unification of South and North Koreas. The results of that survey conducted in 2023 were released which shows that less than half (49.8%) of elementary, middle, and high school students of South Korea nationwide think unification is necessary. According to the results of the '2023 School Unification Education Survey' released by the Ministry of Unification on March 16, 2024, only 49.8% of elementary, middle, and high school students nationwide think unification is necessary, while 11.3% responded that it is not necessary (38.9%) or that they 'don't know/are not interested.'

This is the result of a survey conducted by the Ministry of Unification and the Ministry of Education from October 20 to November 20 of last year with the cooperation of provincial and municipal offices of education across the country, targeting a total of 84,600 students from 756 elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. On the 16th March, 2024, the Ministry of Unification announced in a press release that the perception that 'unification is not necessary' was the highest since it was implemented in 2014 based on Article 8, Paragraph 4 of the Unification Education Support Act, which allows for an annual survey on unification education in elementary and secondary schools.

According to the survey results, the number of students who think that 'unification is necessary' has continuously decreased from 62.4% (2020) → 61.2% (2021) → 57.6% (2022) → 49.8% (2023), and in proportion, the perception that 'unification is unnecessary' has significantly increased from 24.2% (2020) → 25.0% (2021) → 31.7% (2022) → 38.9% (2023). Even including the 11.3% who responded that they 'don't know/are not interested', the positive perception that 'unification is necessary' has fallen by less than half. In particular, the number of respondents who responded that they are 'interested in unification' has also continuously decreased from 50.9% (2021) → 47.4% (2022) → 43.7% (2023), which is raising concerns.

In the case of teachers, the perception that 'unification is necessary' was 82.5%, far exceeding the perception that it is unnecessary (14.6%), but the response that 'unification is necessary' was confirmed to be gradually decreasing from 87.9% (2020) → 85.6% (2021) → 86.7% (2022) → 82.5% (2023). The response that 'I am interested in unification' remained at a relatively high level from 77.9% (2021) → 77.7% (2022) → 70.8% (2023). It seems that the inter-Korean relationship, which is heading towards confrontation, has led to a crisis of war, resulting in skepticism about interest in unification, its feasibility, and the benefits of unification. 통일부는 2023년 10월 20일부터 11월 20일까지 교육부와 함께 전국 초·중·고 756개교 학생 7만3천991명과 교사·관리자 6천469명을 대상으로 '2023년도 학교 통일교육 실태조사'를 시행한 결과를 2024년 3월16일 발표했다. 조사 결과 '통일이 필요하다'는 학생의 비율은 2014년 조사가 시작된 이래 처음으로 50% 아래인 49.8%를 기록했다.

반면, '통일이 불필요하다'는 학생들은 2020년 24.2%, 2021년 25%, 2022년 31.7%에 이어 2023년 38.9%로 가파르게 올라 가장 높은 수준을 기록했다.

학생들의 통일에 대한 관심도도 해마다 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

'(통일에) 관심없다'는 응답자의 비율은 2020년 20.2%에서 2021년 22.4%, 2022년 27%, 2023년은 28.3%로 매년 높아졌다.

북한 자체에 대한 부정적 인식도 강화됐다.

'북한으로 인한 한반도 군사적 충돌·분쟁 가능성'에 대해 '약간 있다'고 응답한 학생과 교사가 각각 56.5%, 50.6%, '많이 있다'는 각각 24.1%, 15%로 학생과 교사를 막론하고 다수 응답자가 충돌 가능성을 우려하는 것으로 나타났다. 같은 맥락에서 북한을 '협력 대상'으로 보는 응답자는 감소한 반면, 북한을 '경계·적대 대상'으로 보거나 남북관계가 '평화롭지 않다'고 여기는 학생·교사들은 늘었다.

1. 수천년을 함께 살았다
2. 강대국에의해 인위적으로 나누어졌다 헤어진지 100년도 안되었다
3. 같은민족 같은뿌리 같은 언어를 사용한다
4. 대륙으로 진출하는것은 깊은 마음속에 박혀있다
5. 언젠가는 왕래안될수가 없다 왕래하는 순간
그냥 자동으로 이루어진다

어린 소년일때는 북한을 보면 착취당하는 사람들이 안타깝고 우리 역사가 함께하는 한민족이라고 느꼈습니다.
30대가 된 지금 북한을 보면 이제는 아무런 감정이 들지 않습니다.
