American Eats BUGS At Korean Market – How Is It!? (Bike Touring Korea Ep#4)
Hello there from Daegu, South Korea. Today we’re going to go try some street food here in Seoul Moon Market. I’m excited. I’m excited. Let’s go try some street food. And I’ll be joined by Mr. Mean right here. Hello guys. This is my host here in Daegu, the warm showers host. Great guy. He’s been taking care of me. And yeah, we’re going to do some exploring and some good eating today. I hope so. Let’s get started. So this one, it’s kind of a rice juice. I think I tried this maybe a couple of days ago, but I’ll give it a go. What’s it called? With some food, after some food, when you thirsty. Let’s do it later then. This one is chewy and sweet. Don’t try it. I would like to try this. It’s like a good start. I’m kind of hungry. This might be the thing I tried in Busan. Does it have honey inside of it? Want some? Sure. Nice. This one looks a lot fresher and nicer than the other one. You cut everything up with scissors in Korea, huh? Noodles, meat, whatever this is. Yeah. So when I was in Canada, I always used to see her when I’m cooking. But everyone looks like, what? Yeah, it’s not a common thing back home in the States. Yeah, but that’s smart. Right, it is actually. And so Mr. Meem has lived abroad in Canada. You didn’t live in the US, right? No. He just traveled throughout the USA. He’s done some really cool tours in the States. he’s done a bike tour from New York to San Francisco he’s seen more of the states than I have so pretty pretty incredible the the journey he’s been on and then he did a road trip last year from whistler to whistler whistler to Oh man don’t forget to tell me how to tell me Thank you Now I’m at Sundae Sundae time of Korea Okay, the original was the pig intestine outside the pig intestine and the blood, veggies and kind of a glass noodle mixed all together and put it in and it’s in there Let’s try one control maybe Inside there’s a lot. Okay, inside there’s a lot. I’m getting ahead of myself. There’s so much to look at. It’s hot. It’s gonna be really hot, huh? Kind of sweet. No peanuts in that one, but that’s delicious, man. It’s chewy and sweetie, right? Super chewy. Kind of crunchy from the outside. Yeah, it is. Because if they grill it, oh man, that is good. Is that a good one? Mm -hmm. Well, that’s good. Sometimes it’s good for vanilla ice. Oh, bad. Good ice cream would be so good. That would be money. Now, also here is that one, the noodles. Cold noodles? You can make it cold. Cold or warm. We are in food heaven right now, I think. So, first I can introduce all the food they have, and then you can choose. Good idea. So, some more of this right here, huh? Pancakes. I mean, fish pancakes. Fish pancakes. I had one of these in Busan. Yes, but not the red one, right? Not the red one, no. I think red one’s from, originally from Daegu. Oh, really? The Daegu food? Yeah. That’s what it is. It kind of reminds me of like foods, and then get something heavy later. Chicken feet, chicken heart. That’s a new one, not the chicken feet, but the chicken heart for sure. Is it good? With teriyaki sauce. Uh -huh. Are you a fan? So good. You’re so good, huh? I feel like chicken feet is pretty yummy. You said this is the biggest market in Daegu? Biggest market in Daegu, and Daegu is the third largest city in South Korea, and so it has like 2 .5 million people, so it’s a big place. Same thing we just had. so i think here we can go like this is exactly through it okay maybe we can go like this okay this looks like the other side nothing but clothes and things like that not really interested in that we can go not really interested in clothes just the food found ourselves with another snack it kind of looks like french fries or maybe cheese but it’s not i think it’s some kind of flour it’s called I’m not gonna be able to say it. It’s a chewy and delicious Korean nostalgic snack that you can season to your preference. Doesn’t really tell you what it is though. I’m curious, is it crunchy, is it chewy, is it half and half? All right, thank you. What is it exactly? Do you know? It’s a flower. Look at that. They look like hot french fries. Yeah, one of the brand, Andy’s hot french fries in America. You probably don’t know what they are, do you? Right, original one first. The original one? Or they look like sweet potato fries too. They kind of look like… kind of, yeah. It’s kind of chewy and like potato -y. Okay, okay. Maybe potato starch. Potato starch? Damn, that’s really good. It’s a nice chewy too, it’s not like… it’s too much, but good texture. You kind of have to work for it a little bit, but it’s good. I bet when these are cold, they’re not very good, huh? It is, no. No, like if you wait too long to eat these, probably not good. So this one in elementary school, when I was in elementary school, it was 10 cents. No, actually these do taste like those hot french fries. Can you get a little bit? These taste like the hot french fries that I was talking about, the chili ones. Okay. Yeah. Exactly, exactly the same flavor. I’m a fan of these, these are good. So this is something you ate when you were a kid, huh? Excuse me, what are the little things in there? It’s kind of like a soy drink, soy milk, it’s kind of like grainy too, it has kind of thick. Want some? I like it. It’s good. I wouldn’t drink a whole lot of it. the good one? yeah. is it a good one? pretty good. and so i guess can you just make this at home if you buy this and this? you can take it home and make it. usually they have a stone grinder. okay. they put some soy in it and then make it this soup. but somehow they make it i think i might have had the other day i had a like a noodle soup that had this kind of broth ford one. yes. this is probably what i had the other day. yeah. it tastes exactly like can i try it? that one’s probably like fried donuts maybe. yeah. fried sugary donuts basically. nothing wrong with that though. that’s good. it’s not donut but a little bit different texture. okay. a little tougher. and just like every other market in the world you can come get your shoes, your bags, your socks, your underwear, everything you can imagine. uh -huh. right. thank you. it’s good. i like it. it kind of has like a corn flavor. she made it. oh she made it? yeah. very delicious. thank you. i like it. it’s a good balance or mixture of like clothes and food all in the middle. so Daegu is famous for the clothing like textiles and fabric like your job right that’s why apparently my dad is working in Daegu that makes sense so in this market lots of clothing all out this way there’s a fabric store right there what kind of snacks are they selling over here okay he’s waving me over all right oh some biscuits and cookies where are you from Central Asia where I’m gonna get out of map and see where this gentleman is from Like rice cracker fried chips? Yeah. With chicken leg. Snack. Because it must be like chicken leg. Okay. This one, you guys have one in steaks. I thought that was going to be really hard and thick and like… Very easy. It’s white. Yeah. And like I bit right through that. Okay. He keeps… Very generous. Thank you. Okay. So he is from Turkmenistan. That’s a big country. That is good. 90% desert. Yeah, 80, 90. Wow. Wow. What is the capital? Ashkawat. The only city. How long have you been here? Two years. Two years? So I met Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan. A lot of people come here from Central Asia. Thank you. Thank you. This is a noodle roll right here. All noodle shots right here. Look at that. Some deep fried sandwiches. What kind do you have? So this is corn? Yeah, corn. Corn and ham? Yes. Egg? And mayo. Egg and mayo and then? Ham and cheese. Ham and cheese. Just all that fried stuff. I feel like it’s going to just weigh me down. I want to try a lot of the lighter things first. Stuff like that. That is the biggest. This is the biggest cake I’ve ever seen in my life. Wow. These are the famous silkworms that you can eat here in Korea. Oh my gosh. Oh, look at that. You gotta try it while you’re here. You gotta give it a go. Are you a fan of these? I like it. You like it? Crunchy. Not too bad. Not too bad. It’s pretty good. I mean, you can just get over the fact that you’re eating a bug. It’s okay. Not too meaty, I guess, it feels like you’re eating like shrimp, like the strips with scales and stuff like that. But it’s a good protein. Good protein? Yeah. Kind of crunchy like you’re eating shrimp. Help yourself, help yourself. Kind of leaves an interesting aftertaste too. Good source of protein though, huh? Yeah. A lot of interesting stuff everywhere you turn. What can I say? Kind of a Korean pudding. Korean pudding, okay. Kind of. Something like that. Jelly pudding. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. More kimbap. Hello. Hi. Yeah. Do you sell them by one? It’s one piece, seven thousand. How much? Seven hundred. Oh, seven hundred. Yeah, yeah. What is the most popular one? What’s your best one? I’ll try it. Best one, least, best one. That’s the best one? Yeah. What is it? Octopus. Octopus. Yeah. Okay, I’ll try one. One. Maybe you can try tteokbokki and fries and dumpling and this. Is this all the same place? Yes. Okay, let’s all do it from here. What is she cooking? What are you making? What are you making? What are you making? What is this? It’s rice. Rice pancake. Rice pancake? Okay. They have a very spicy one, white one, the spicy one. Let’s try it. Very spicy one. Just regular spicy. Very spicy. they got some good stuff over here too wow look at all the beans and grains over here oh the soup okay very hot okay thank you all right so they dropped off some some little slushies on the house it looks like they yeah they refry the things that are already fried out there for you make it nice and hot so this right here is the the famous Daegu dumplings can you only get it in Daegu or it’s just it’s known for being here really like from that book but maybe some in Seoul some of them they have some okay once again you chop everything up with scissors yep always always so time for a salve all right i’m gonna put the top of them in here okay so you can use the sauce over here and then you got some soy sauce yeah maybe just some delicious fried calamari like it really soft oh yeah mostly most of the time calamari is kind of chewy this isn’t chewy at all next one dipping here okay try this one yeah like this yo seasoning so good the chili season i don’t know if this is rice or uh flour but so soft so usually when we make rice cake we use two types of rice cake okay one with the rice one with the flour uh -huh so flour is more salt but rice one is more cheese okay but this one is flour flour yeah i’d say it’s not chewy at all pretty soft right it’s really soft hey um pig’s blood, noodle, and veggies, kind of chewy, it’s pretty good, okay, not my favorite but… Do you care if I show you your building? It’s okay? Yeah. Okay. So we’re back in Mr. Min’s neighborhood, we’re done with the food tour, that was freaking awesome. Very good. I got to try a lot of different things, I’m pretty stuffed. The only thing that wasn’t very good, I don’t think was the bing, wasn’t a soup, the bing soup, it just wasn’t it, I don’t know, it was just missing something or it just didn’t hit the spot, like the last three or four that I’ve eaten. But anyways, so Mr. Min is my warm showers host and he’s got a pretty interesting story, I just wanted to ask him, like, why you decided to become… a warm showers host because when i did the cross america uh -huh i used warm shower too and lots of hosts helped me a lot but you know i can help them right right so i decide yeah i can help in korea for the other bike tours okay good circulation you know pay it forward pay it forward right how many people how many times do you think you use warm showers me yeah in the states in the state it was 10 years ago so i can’t remember quite a bit though but over 10 times over 10 times yeah yeah they bring me to the restaurant pub or city tour or sometimes they drive me to the other place you know okay so they just helped you out a lot and so when you came back here you started doing warm showers yes as a host yes nice well uh if you’re in degu and you’re cycling and you’re on warm showers look them up you’ve got a great place to stay always welcome nice guy i’ve been cruising down this river for a while and i’d say it’s pretty lovely a lot of people out enjoying themselves working out walking their dogs uh you know playing little games and whatnot running not a bad little place i’d say i like you all right and they gave me a flag i’m good to go beautiful picture you

You met a great warmshower host. Enjoy your Korea tour~.
