There are many mountains in Gifu Prefecture, and some of them are said to have been inhabited by Tengu (long-nosed goblins) in the past. Tengu are mysterious beings with long noses and powerful spirits that sometimes help people and sometimes play tricks on them.

In particular, there are a number of mountains in the Hida region that are favorite haunts of tengu, and there is a legend that tengu hid treasures there. Furthermore, there is a legend of a mysterious river in Gifu Prefecture called “Hida no Shirakawa”, which flows with white water.

It is said that the water in this river looked white because a god once sent a white thread down the river to save the village. The fields that use this water are very fruitful and people are grateful to the god.
