The intersection of Nanahonmatsu-dori and Izumi-dori the starting point As you can see there are many temples Let’s start There are many temples along the way to Senbon-dori As for the information in the blog article temples were not gathered together due to urban planning etc
It seems that temples happened to gather in this area in the early Edo period It’s still strange though It is also said that there is something called the Seven Wonders of Demizu that is related to the temples in this area
This intersection is the ruins of the En-no-matubara that I talked about at #18 Rokkenmachi-dori After passing Senbon-dori it becomes a residential area The red torii gate on the right is Sakuramiya Shrine This is a shrine related to Yoshimitsu Ashikaga the third shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate
Speaking of Yoshimitsu he is the one who built Kinkaku-ji Temple It intersects with Horikawa Dori but there is no traffic light so take a detour Via Shimodachiuri-dori This road is Horikawa-dori The arcade is Horikawa Shopping Street This shopping street is also a fun and lively shopping street
Pass through Shimodachiuri-dori and cross Horikawa-dori Pass through Higashihorikawa-dori and return to Demizu-dori The black pine came into view This is Kogido the site of Jinsai Ito’s house Ito Jinsai was a Confucian scholar in the early Edo period and Kogido was his private school
The white-walled storehouse was originally a storehouse and is a designated national historic site Japanese black pine has been designated as a tree of pride for Kamigyo Ward residents Let’s take a look at the bridge over Horikawa Demizu Bridge over Horikawa It is an old brick bridge The Horikawa River flows below
I returned to Demizu-dori The building in front is the Kyoto Prefectural Office building Demizu-dori is divided by the Kyoto Prefectural Office Also head to Demizu-dori via Shimotachiuri-dori in the south This street is Nishinotoin-dori This is Shimodachiuri-dori The Kyoto Prefectural Office which divides Demizu-dori is now visible
This is the former main building of the Kyoto Prefectural Office It is still used as the government office but you can also tour the inside This tree is called juniper It was planted here from a nearby temple to commemorate the completion of the old main building
This is an old tree that is over 300 years old This is a brick building completed in 1904 Let’s take a look at the courtyard This cherry tree is a relative of the weeping cherry tree in Maruyama Park
This Kyoto Prefectural Office was the residence of the Kyoto Shugo official in the late Edo period Before the guardian residence was moved to this location the main shrine was located at Kurodani Kinkaikomyoji Temple Speaking of the Kyoto guardian position it is Katamori Matsudaira of the Aizu domain
This is also the organization that Shinsengumi belonged to There’s no end to it if you start talking about it so that’s all for this story The stone pillars used at Gojo-Ohashi Bridge are used as landscape stones in the courtyard
It is said to have been a pier for the Gojo-Ohashi Bridge built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi I was surprised to find something like that in a place like this Head to the old assembly hall on the north side of the old main building This is the entrance to the old parliament hall
This old assembly hall was used from the late Meiji period to the late Showa period This chamber which you can currently tour appears to have been restored to a Meiji-era design It’s still a wonderful building I’ll go up to the second floor
The carvings on the stairs are also beautiful View of the courtyard from the second floor Next let’s take a look at the former governor’s office This room is the old dining room This is the old governor’s office It was used until 1971 It’s a great desk
But it feels a little small what can I do? Well I’m back to Shimodachiuri-dori Street again The Agency for Cultural Affairs which was a hot topic a while ago came into view Agency for Cultural Affairs Kyoto Government Building
The Agency for Cultural Affairs came to Kyoto as a move of government ministries to local areas But apparently it still exists in Tokyo I don’t quite understand it This road is Shinmachi-dori Now I’m back to Demizu-dori again We will soon arrive at the east end of Demizu-dori
I arrived at the east end of Demizu-dori The east end of Demizu-dori (the intersection of Karasuma-dori and Demizu-dori) The stone wall and forest in front is Kyoto Gyoen National Garden
This is an in-vehicle video of me cycling along Demizu-dori, an east-west street in Kyoto, from the west end (the intersection of Shichihonmatsu-dori and Demizu-dori) to the east end (the intersection of Karasuma-dori and Demizu-dori).
Along the way, we will provide information on Kyoto from a local perspective, so please take a look.

Hello everyone
Thank you for listening to Cycle Panda ch.
In this video, we will take you through the streets of Kyoto,
which are said to be shaped like a checkerboard.
I ride my bike (and walk where I can’t) at a leisurely pace.
I hope to be able to show you around the city along the way.
Please take your time to take a look.
Demizu-dori
An east-west street that connects Karasuma-dori in the east and Shichihonmatsu-dori in the west.
It corresponds to Konoe-oji in Heiankyo.
As you can imagine from the name Demizu,
In the past, there was a spring near the west entrance of the Karasuma Demizu intersection.
It was named Demizu-dori because water often overflowed onto the road.
Now that water has dried up, I can’t check it.
The street is also divided by the Kyoto Prefectural Office.
Although it is generally a residential area, there are many public institutions such as government offices on the east side of the street.
There are many temples on the west side of the street.
