Cycling in Slow German | Easy German Live
Hello, and welcome to a live stream from us, from Easy German, in slow German. We’re talking slowly and we’re live on YouTube and on Facebook right now . If you watch this video later, there are subtitles. You can click “CC”. And
Now let’s speak slowly. You can write to us, you can post a comment or a chat, a chat message on YouTube or Facebook. And today we have a special topic that is close to our hearts, two topics in fact, namely cycling and Poland, the country of Poland
And the city of Warsaw. And from this city I now welcome our two correspondents Cari and Janusz. Hello you two. – Hello Manuel! We are here in Poland, in Warsaw to be precise, and as you can see, it is very windy. – This is a completely new perspective at Easy
German. You two are sitting on the bike, Janusz is sitting on the bike, you’re still standing next to it, right, Cari? – Correct. We can show ourselves now. This is Janusz and here I am. And where are you? – So, Manuel, we are on Castle Square in Warsaw. Behind Janusz
You can see the castle. The Polish king used to live there. – Wow. – Wow. You’re impressed, aren’t you? Yes, should I say anything else? – We should get going. – Oh, I think Manuel’s internet is gone. Can this be? That’s dramatic. Then we have to continue without Manuel. Janusz,
We need to keep some distance. I hear myself twice, and people probably do too. We ‘ll just go, I’d say. Are you ready, Janusz? – Yes, I’ll film you from behind, okay? – No, you’d better film yourself. – Ah, okay. – Yes, dear people, our plan today is
To ride through Warsaw by bike, in slow German. Manuel, you’re back. – I am back. I am back. We had a technical problem here with the camera. You’re already on the bike. It looks beautiful, blue sky above you with fluffy clouds. And where
Are you going now? Yes, show me a little. You drive through the city center of Warsaw. Correct. We are now driving away from Schlossplatz to the south, towards the south. Look, it’s probably hard to see up there, you see a pierogi. Oh, there’s the bus,
Now I have to stop for a moment. Manuel, the cycling infrastructure here is a little different than in Berlin. There are either very good bike paths or no bike paths at all. – Yes. And that’s a problem because have you ever heard that it’s good for bikes
To ride on the street because then they’re visible? – Yes, it is sometimes the case that it is better if you drive your cars on a large street instead of on a small bike path. Our dear listener Creighton also has an important question about road safety.
Where are the cocktail bars? – Are you two able to drive? Are you allowed and able to ride a bike at all? Or did you drink alcohol today? – No, we’ve been two days… – Well… I’m happy to answer that personally, Creighton. I already drank a glass of champagne this morning
, but now I’m sober again. – Very good, exemplary. And where are you going now? We’re driving… Oh, we’re just… Wait a minute, I have to coordinate now. Look, we’re right in front of the presidential palace now. – Yes. – This is
Actually… – I don’t even know which picture to look at, there’s so much action right now with you. Maybe… So, I’m looking at your camera now. Maybe Janusz can change his camera so that we can see him, then… I think that would be good too. Here
You see, Manuel, the presidential palace. The Polish flag is flying up there. – Yes. – And behind it, you can’t see it, behind the equestrian monument you can see the EU flag. I’ll loop again , maybe you’ll see it then. – Yes. – There’s Janusz ahead. So, here, at the front,
I’ll switch around, you can see… Oh, now I’m gone for a moment. The technology doesn’t work as expected, Manuel. – Nope. – Can you still see me? – I got stuck again. What’s going on with us? – Yes, we also have a new camera,
Maybe that’s to blame too. But I hear you and see you. – Janusz. And we hear Janusz too. Janusz is very loud, right? – Yes. – Maybe we need to give it a try now and then. – I
Haven’t said anything yet. – That’s correct. So here you see the presidential palace and us drive on now. There are three flags, the EU flag, the Polish flag and the NATO flag. And there you see Janusz Hamerski. Let’s move on, Janusz. We still have a
Big plan ahead of us. Who would have thought that we both have the stable internet? – Yes. – Here on the bike. We continue through the Old Town of Warsaw. There are police up front,
So you have to be careful. Janusz, how are you? – I’m doing very well. – Oh, I’m listening to music. There’s a street musician up front. There, can you hear that? This is the old royal road,
Janusz. Is that right? – Yes. – This is where the kings used to go to the castle, only… the king has moved to the castle. – Yes, but now it is called Krakowskie Przedmieście, which means Krakow suburb. – Ah, right, because the old town is behind us. It’s very nice here, Janusz. I
Have to say, Warsaw has a very nice city center. – Yes. – And I like that very much. Manuel seems to have disappeared. – I’m back. – There you are again, Manuel. – It’s really adventure. – Yeah, I don’t know what’s the bigger adventure here, our
Studio technology or your bike. – Cari, here on the left. – You’ve already announced that you’re doing a stunt today, is that right? – A what? – A bicycle stunt. – I fall on my face. – No Please not. – No, no stunts. No stunts, Janusz. – Can you answer questions? We
Already have a lot of questions here in our chat. Can you ride a bike and answer questions at the same time? – Very gladly. – Yes, sure. Oh, I’ll show you something. This bus, look where it’s going. Do you see
That? -Esperanto. – It says “Esperanto” as the target. – Interesting. – Esperanto was invented in Warsaw. – Is that so? I’ll do… I’ll take a quick detour to the Copernicus monument. Janusz, is Copernicus from Warsaw? Yes, right? – No not at all. – From Krakow. – No? – From
Krakow, he studied in Krakow. – Studied, studied. – Okay. – Oh, now Janusz is gone. – What’s going on there? Janusz, you were kicked out of the live stream. This will be cleared up immediately, Manuel. We will… – Here I am again. – There he is. – I’m back. – Well,
Copernicus is not from Warsaw. – No no no no. Many people laugh at the fact that he has such a thick monument here, but that’s because the Poles are incredibly proud that they have a scientist of this rank, from the Middle Ages, so to speak. However,
Copernicus was neither German nor Polish. Back then these terms weren’t so clear, but oh well. – Come on, Janusz, let’s move on. – The Germans say Copernicus is German, and the Poles say he is Polish. He was both and neither. – Janusz,
We have to talk slowly. – Let’s start… Let’s ask a simpler question, perhaps, than the story of Copernicus. “How expensive is Warsaw?” Sandeep wants to know. You’ve been here for a few weeks already. – Correct. – How much money did you spend? We… Well, Warsaw is cheaper than Berlin. – But not very.
But not much. So some things are cheaper, for example taking the tram only costs 80 cents. Taking a taxi, driving an Uber is much cheaper, taking the train is much cheaper, but cocktails here also cost ten euros in a good cocktail bar. Yes. – And… – Look, isn’t that nice?
Yes, show me first. That is beautiful. – This is Nowy Swiat, this is the new world. – Yes. And the new world is called that because it used to be here outside the city and when the first shops were built here, people said, wow, this is the new world outside the city.
Beautiful. Creighton wants to know: What are three things that surprised you about Warsaw? You seem very delighted with the city. Okay, Janusz, you start. – I had the strongest culture shock when I went to a Polish bookstore. I couldn’t stop, I can’t buy the books because I can’t carry them.
But I took a lot of pictures and it’s unbelievable how interesting the bookstores are here. I think they just take the most beautiful things from all over the world and publish them here in Polish. It’s really great. Bookstore, who would have thought? – Okay, bookstores surprised you.
Janusz, where are you anyway? – And you, Cari? I’m behind you, but you’re a kilometer ahead of me, I think. OK. What surprised me was that Warsaw is very diverse. The architecture is also very different on every corner, maybe a bit like in Berlin.
Maybe we’ll continue here? I don’t know it. I’m already looking for where we’re going. And what always surprises me in Poland is that you can see it again at the front: all the police everywhere. I have the feeling that the police are much more present than in Germany . Maybe that’s purely subjective.
And does cycling feel safer than in Berlin or more dangerous? Yes, partly, I have to say, more dangerous. I’ll drive on now. Here comes Janusz. Oh, Janusz is being chased by a bus. The thing is, there are huge cycle paths, I’ll show you them in a moment, Manuel,
And it’s much safer to ride on these cycle paths because they’re sometimes separated from the road. But when you’re driving on the road, I feel like it’s a lot more dangerous because the cars aren’t as considerate. Well, I’ve almost been run over a few times.
Understand. But there’s not that much traffic, it doesn’t look that crowded at the moment. Yes, that… – Although it should actually be rush hour, right? That’s right, that surprised me here in Warsaw. I feel like the streets are very big, there is a lot of space and little traffic jams.
Yes. And what also surprises me is that UniqueChat BBR also writes about how clean Warsaw is. “Warsaw is a dream.” It really looks a lot cleaner than Berlin. Yes, that can be. Berlin is also one of the dirtiest cities in the world. Okay, now I’m driving totally illegally in the bus lane.
This is now the most dangerous part of our journey. We’ll turn back quickly. I see that Janusz is behind me. Oh, look, isn’t that nice? We drive on the main road at sunset. And Manuel is gone again. Yes, I hear you. It’s just the camera that’s causing problems, but I’m following your journey.
That is nice. Do you enjoy watching us drive around Warsaw? Yes, I would love to be there and would love to ride my bike through Warsaw with you. Next week. But it also looks a bit dangerous. Emanuel Schuchart writes “Epic!”. Your tour of Warsaw is epic.
Hey, Emanuel is sitting on the train right now, he was here yesterday. And are you ready for the first challenge? I don’t know if you can do it right here in the middle of the livestream, but Will wants you to talk to someone, talk. Can you talk to someone?
Yes, we’ll do that right away. We can turn right here, Janusz. And then you can talk to someone. Anyone? Anyone. Okay, then… I’ll just call. Dzień dobry! Przepraszam, may you have pani coś zapytać? Do you want to take a look at things like that in Warsaw? Tylko 3 minutes. Cari? Tak? OK.
Mieszkasz w Warszawie? A skąd jesteś? …Z Legionowa? – Tak. Nawet never wiem, gdzie to jest. Okolice Warszawy, za Ostrołęką. I co, study tutaj? Pracuje. Pracujesz… Tak. I think pracujesz? My robimy tutaj livestream, how? I’m going to take this challenge, I’m going to give it a try. Dziękuję ci, że nam pomogłaś, tak? Cześć. That was Polish. OK. – She was super nice. Here we now see Netflix advertising. And there they are again, the police.
That’s the city police and I… they stand there every day. And I’m always unsure whether we can or are allowed to go there or not. Yes. Look, Manuel, here is a cycle path, a cycle path, structurally separated. And here? Bike path end. No bike path.
Look, and now a car is coming, it’s getting tight. And now? And now? Yes. Pretty dangerous. Oh, that’s not dangerous. We can drive a car and we can ride a bike. What’s that supposed to mean? We’re here… What’s the point? We are not in a kindergarten here. Manuel, do we have another question?
Yes. Janek wants to know: Are you perhaps planning a meeting with your viewers in Warsaw? Of course we are planning that. We will meet on Tuesday, March 26th, next week. Manuel, can you still register? I don’t know whether the event is already fully booked or whether there are still places available,
But you can find it either way on our website, easygerman.org. There is a Meetups point there, easygerman.org/meetups, and you can register there if there are still places available. It depends on the bar we are in and whether there is still space.
Look, Manuel, now we’re really at… Zen… well, we’re in the center all the time, but here we come to the landmark of Warsaw, the Palace of Culture. This looks fantastic. Show us again, exactly, turn left, that looks incredible. Where is Janusz? Ah, there’s Janusz.
Yes, we can stop here with this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful skyline of Warsaw. Are these actually e-bikes, electric bicycles? You’re moving very fast, aren’t you? Right, Manuel. We’re traveling unusually fast, you’ve seen that clearly with your eyes. Where did you get those? – Where is Janusz? Where did you get e-bikes?
These are actually bikes for couriers. So there’s a company that makes bicycles for deliveries… Look, that one there, for example, the Volt driver, he has the same bike! He has the same bike as us. And have you brought anyone food yet? No, I haven’t brought anyone food yet, maybe myself.
I’ll show you again how beautiful it looks where Janusz is driving from, look. Wow, beautiful. Isn’t that a backdrop? And Janusz is now filming me. – By the way, Vitalii explains to us why there is so much police presence everywhere.
Today there are demonstrations in Warsaw by farmers who are blocking the city with excavators. That’s why there are so many police officers on the road. Thanks for the info. I’ve heard that these protests are happening, but I’ve never seen them. I’ve even heard them, but never seen them. So there are farmers’ protests.
Manuel, now I have a quiz for you. – Okay. – Here we see the Palace of Culture. This is an interesting landmark of Warsaw because it’s a bit… how do you say it, Janusz? It is social realist. It has a diverse history. It was actually given to the Poles by Stalin
And was hated for a very long time as a symbol of Soviet rule. Even today it may still be a dubious monument, but it is now essentially the symbol of Warsaw. You see how big this is, right? Yes. I wrote down how many rooms there are. You have to guess now.
How many rooms are there in this huge palace? Wow, that is a very difficult question. So I would guess… how many floors could that be? Maybe… three thousand six hundred. Maybe thirty floors and ten rooms per floor or is that not enough? So I’ll say, I’ll say four hundred rooms.
There are actually over three thousand two hundred rooms. Wow. This thing is huge. We can drive closer again. Yes. But it’s just huge. There is even a swimming pool, a cinema and four theater halls. Four. – Four. Cool. You’re surprised too, aren’t you? You’re pretty surprised, Manuel.
Nancy wants to know: Are there fewer bicycles in Warsaw than in Berlin? Beautiful or? Yes. A lot fewer bikes. Yes, you can see that too, here in the middle of the city, empty cycle path. There would be a small bicycle traffic jam in Berlin at this time of day.
Probably yes. Should we continue again, Manuel? What are you saying? Absolutely. You wanted to get closer to the palace, to the Palace of Culture. I’m pretty close now. But we can drive closer again. The police are standing there again.
And have you already been approached by Easy German fans, Mitsue would like to know? – Yes. Not today. – Yes. Not today. – But otherwise almost every day, actually. And Janusz, where were you born, Mateusz would like to know? I was born in the north of Poland, in Ostróda or in German Osterode.
And what would interest me is to write in the chat, how do you like this format? Should we cycle through cities more often or is that too shaky? I would find that interesting to hear now. Live feedback. But the weather is really beautiful in Warsaw.
Yes, it is… – But it is also very cold. Okay, the first feedback is “very good”, “very happy”. So, please keep it up. Seems… – Look, Manuel. …what you came up with seems to be a good format, Cari. This hotel, right? On the first evening of our stay in Warsaw,
I took Janusz there and we were in a bar at the top with a view over the whole of Warsaw. How nice. This building… – And here’s another closer look at the Palace of Culture. Yes. – So. Look, I parked my bike.
So, I find it very difficult cognitively to understand what is happening in both pictures at the same time. It’s a bit chaotic, but it’s a nice way to get to know Warsaw a bit. And I’m now even more excited for next week when we’ll be there with the whole team
And make a video and do a podcast. Yes, I’ll show you something, Manuel, because up here, can you see that? Yes. – What’s up there? That’s too small. – Warsaw Centralna. Ah, this is the main train station. – It’s the train station, yes.
This strange UFO is the main train station and there, Manuel, you will arrive on Monday evening. So, dear Easy German fans in Warsaw, if you want to see Manuel, all you have to do is wait in front of the train station on Monday evening.
Manuel. – Will you pick me up on the delivery bike? Or… I would be happy to pick you up on my bike, but you have a lot of luggage with you. I can’t wear that. – That’s correct. That’s correct. That’s correct. Josef would like to know how long you will be in Warsaw.
We’re still in Warsaw for exactly ten days. Janusz, you somehow have the camera set up strangely. We want to see you here now. Ah okay. We’re still in Warsaw for ten days. That’s not that long now, right? Yes, ten days is a lot.
We have to distance ourselves a little more, Janusz, otherwise we’ll be heard twice. I’m leaving. I’m leaving. I don’t want to give anything away, but tomorrow we have a very special day. Oh, Manuel, tomorrow is Janusz’s birthday. And what have you planned? Do you know what we have planned? – No.
This man will celebrate by riding his bike around the city. From mall to mall. From mall to mall. And his wish is that he can decide where we go, when we take a coffee break and when we… where we go in. All day long.
Beautiful. And how can we go about this, how can we take part in this day? Are you going to post about it somewhere afterwards? Yes, sure. No. – No? – This is our private day, Manuel. Maybe in the podcast, in the Easy German Podcast? We will definitely call you. I like that.
Go away, Janusz, you’re too close. Yes, of course we can do that. I can tell you about it in the Easy German Podcast, Manuel. What about that? I like that. That’s a nice cliffhanger.
So tomorrow is Janusz’s birthday and if you want to hear how Janusz spent his birthday in Warsaw, then you can listen to the Easy German Podcast next week. You can find it on easygerman.fm. And Cari and Janusz, we have to break up slowly.
Oh, it totally smells like fries in here and now I’m really hungry. I think it comes from this place. Then get some fries at the end of the day. Or from this place. Someone just asked when people get off work in Warsaw. Maybe now is the time to call it a day.
Yes, the sun is setting. We’re leaving now… What do we do now, Janusz? Shall we go have a beer? Probably. We have to drive in slowly. Jakub… – You have to go. Jakub recommends the viewing terrace on the Culture Palace. Maybe that would be something for tomorrow. The Yes!
That’s a great idea. This is also on my bucket list. There’s a viewing platform up there, there, there, we definitely have to go there, Janusz. This is an idea for your birthday. Yes, but I don’t know if we’ll get around to it because we want to shop all day.
Shop all day. This is Janusz Hamerski’s wish for his birthday. Hey, I never get anything done… – Shop, shop, shop. I never get around to buying anything sensible for myself. And I need a jacket or a, like, a blouson, because I have to… A blouson? So what is that?
A jacket. – A jacket. Ah okay. I have to look a bit respectful in the German embassy. We’re doing a podcast next week in… a podcast recording in the German embassy. Do I also have to buy a blouson? Do we have to… Is there a dress code? Or what’s the plan?
We represent our company there. OK. Manuel, is our internet actually bad? No, your internet is, to be honest, good. We had a few technical issues with this livestream, but it was still fun. It was wonderful to see a bit of Warsaw and watch you ride your bikes.
If you would like to become a member of Easy German, you can do so at easygerman.org/membership. This is how you finance wild adventures like this one. You finance Cari and Janusz’s cargo bikes and e-bikes. I bought these privately. Did you buy privately? Oh right. From my private money. Okay, well.
Do you actually see how beautiful the sunset looks here, Manuel? Yes, it doesn’t come across like that right now. Ah yes, slowly now. Okay, what are your last words? Would you recommend Warsaw? How many stars do you give the city of Warsaw? Of how many? – How many? – Of five.
Five. – Five. Five out of five. Five out of five. – Yes definitely. – Very good. Greetings to everyone who is watching us from Warsaw and Poland and from all over the world. Glad you were there and drive carefully, both of you. We do! – See you soon! Ciao! – Ciao! – Ciao!
Join Cari & Janusz as they cycle through the streets of Warsaw, Poland.
