Surviving the Sulu Sea | Bizarre Creature Encounters in Malaysia šŸ‡²šŸ‡¾ [SE E43]

Previously on ā€œTwo Up and Overloadedā€ – We delved deep into the heart of EastĀ  Malaysia, taking our little KTM 250Ā Ā  Adventure on some truly adventurous roadsĀ  through rugged jungle and lush palm oilĀ orchards.Ā  But now we were headed to theĀ  coast, and were about to delve into aĀ Ā

Very different type of scenery – the ocean.Ā  Yeah, from jungles to oceans, folks. Yes. The ocean is something that we, as ChicagoansĀ  from a big continent right in the middle,Ā Ā  not close to any ocean, are unfamiliar with. We’reĀ  also equally unfamiliar with jungle coming fromĀ Ā

Chicago. That’s true. But I understand forest andĀ  anything on land a lot better than I understandĀ Ā  the creatures of the sea. That is a world that IĀ  do not know at all. There’s things that zap you,Ā Ā  there’s things that sting you, there’sĀ  things that bite you… Like, “Nope.” [Bak Bak Beach – Malaysia]

So we left Bak Bak Beach. I wantedĀ  to say that one. Oh, you can say it.Ā Ā  Bak Bak Beach. And we headed to almost theĀ  Tip of Borneo where we were going to stay. Yes,Ā Ā  a little beachside cabin near the town of Kudat.

We had to take a small roadĀ  that felt more like a bike path. All right. This is the entranceĀ  to our, as Marisa calls it,Ā Ā  a beachfront resort. I do like theseĀ  little small roads. They’re likeĀ Ā  bike paths back in the States, butĀ  here this is two-way traffic, yeah.

There’s a couple littleĀ  wooden bridges that we rode over.Ā Ā  And we were in more of a ruralĀ  area, which is exactly what we want. All right, what do we got? A little bridge. So we were following Google Maps, and itĀ  said it should be right around here.Ā Ā

Oh, there’s little puppies. I saw your sibling upĀ  the street. And unfortunately, we didn’t see theĀ Ā  correct road to get to this beachside cabin, andĀ  we kind of got stuck in this little area betweenĀ Ā  houses where there was a lot of sand. Well,Ā  the problem was, is there were some roadsideĀ Ā

Houses and buildings and structures and thenĀ  apparently some beachside on the other side.Ā Ā  But we don’t know what we’re looking for, andĀ  so I’m just kind of riding around like an idiot,Ā Ā  and then I got us stuck in this little field thatĀ  was clearly a dead end of somebody’s backyard.

Do you want me to push you back? I do. Back back. Hut, hut, hike. But thankfully, there was a lovely woman that wasĀ  like, “These people need the guidance of somebodyĀ Ā  useful.” And we asked her where it was. Oh,Ā  through here? Yeah, okay, so motorcycle goes… SheĀ Ā

Wants you to take the motorcycle through that. AndĀ  she said, “Oh yeah, all you got to do is rideĀ Ā  through this little tiny narrow corridor becauseĀ  you’ve gone the wrong way.” Yeah, and I was like,Ā Ā

“I don’t know if you’re going to fit.” But youĀ  did fit. Heck yeah. There were hoses and boxes. Do I got it? Yeah, you got it! But yeah, that little 250 is just so like,Ā  “Jack be nimble, Jack be quick.” Yeah,Ā Ā

Very maneuverable. And we weren’t lookingĀ  for a proper hotel or anything. This wasĀ Ā  a homestay. This is someone’s propertyĀ  that they just opened up to tourists. ItĀ Ā  was very local and community-oriented,Ā  and that was exactly what we like. ItĀ Ā

Was awesome. I saw it. We booked it for oneĀ  night, and as soon as I saw it, I was like,Ā Ā  “Is it available for tomorrow night too?”Ā  And he was like, “Yes.” I said, “Okay,Ā Ā  why don’t you just go ahead and book us again,Ā  because this is going to be absolutely amazing.”

[Tajau Laut Guest House – 6.9712Ė™ North 116.8151Ė™ East] Wow, look at this. Oh my gosh, how cool. We got the romantic honeymoon suite cabin,Ā  with our own little balcony toĀ Ā  look out at beautiful stuff. And our own littleĀ  temporary cat it came with, thatĀ Ā

Followed us everywhere, and let us pet it.Ā  And it was just as soon as we saw what it was,Ā Ā  I was very, very, very excited that weĀ  were going to be spending a couple nights there. No air conditioning, extremely rustic,Ā Ā

No hot water in the shower, but who needsĀ  that? You are on the beach. The waves canĀ Ā  come right underneath the house itself. IĀ  mean, how cool was that? It was perfect. This is the story of two foreignersĀ  coming across an unexpected, yetĀ Ā

Magical gem of Borneo, leaving us with aĀ  lasting experience we will never forget. Hey everyone! Nice to have you here. We areĀ  Tim, and Marisa Notier. I ride in the front.Ā Ā  And I’m in the rear. We travel the world andĀ  we pack too much gear. Oh, all the places we’llĀ Ā

Go! Through rain and through sleet and throughĀ  mud and through snow. Oh, all the things we’llĀ Ā  see! We’ve been to a country or two. Or three!Ā  Oh, all the fun we’ve had! To have you along,Ā Ā

Would make us real glad. So give us a like, andĀ  hit subscribe to join us along our epic ride. [This episode is brought to you by Doubletake Mirrors.] [Foldable, indestructible… www.DoubletakeMirror.com] We were given these little biscuits. Yeah,Ā  from I believe her name is Zubaida. AndĀ Ā

She is the person running thisĀ  awesome beach place. And look,Ā Ā  it’s homemade! Bean dip. I think it’s mung bean paste.Ā  I have yet to try one. Can I have one? Please? I’m not the biggest fan ofĀ  things in the ocean. Yeah,Ā Ā

But it’s so beautiful. But Jason told us thatĀ  story of a fish biting on his nipple. Oh yeah!Ā Ā  That was the stuff of nightmares. I gotĀ  some fish bait going on here.Ā Ā  No snorkeling for me. But pretty stuff. Mhm. TheĀ  tide was all the way out. Yeah, and it was a very,Ā Ā

Very far distance that the tide went out to. Yeah.Ā  But it exposed a lot. That’s the part of theĀ Ā  ocean I like, the part I can see, the stuff onĀ  the bottom. Nothing’s going to getĀ me.Ā

We’re going to take a little walk along theĀ  beach as the tide comes in. See what we can see. And as we’re walking through, there’s…Ā  I didn’t think starfish got much moreĀ Ā  exotic than like the weird ones. SomeĀ  of them get like 40 legs. It’s creepy.Ā Ā

Yes! There’s neon blue ones and then there’sĀ  like the king of all starfish. It looked like,Ā Ā  I’m going to say, Patrick from SpongeBob, and I’veĀ  seen that, like, one time. This huge pink starfishĀ Ā  thing! With super spikes. With super spikes,Ā  like super power spikes. Wowzers. It’s amazing,Ā Ā

Yes. But I had done my research and I knewĀ  that this type of starfish is not poisonous.Ā Ā  Most starfish are not poisonous, and soĀ  we wanted to inspect it close up. Yep.Ā Ā  Oh, not my favorite side. No? That isĀ  sandworm side. Wowzers. This is cool.

Marisa is much braver than I am. I won’tĀ  even touch this side of it. There’s no way I wasĀ Ā  going to get bitten by a starfish. You can’tĀ  get bitten by a starfish. They turn intoĀ  little boa constrictors… And just start eating you?Ā Ā

They just eat you. Starfish are fascinatingĀ  creatures. Like Tim said, they can have up to 40Ā Ā  arms, and can lose arms and regrow them. They haveĀ  no brains and will extend their stomachs outwardsĀ Ā  to swallow large prey. Starfish can live up to 35Ā  years, but can’t live out of water for very long,Ā Ā

So we made sure to put them back in the oceanĀ  right where we found them. And one thing thatĀ Ā  starfish and I have in common… What isĀ  that? Expanding stomach and no brains. Oh yeah, I guess two things.

This water is so warm and nice. It feels likeĀ  the air temperature. It’s amazing. And we finallyĀ Ā  get to the little dead coral island, which hadĀ  some live coral on it too. But it was just…Ā  It was like an island made out ofĀ  coral bones or whatnot. Yeah, it wasĀ Ā

Really cool. That was kind of our destination. WeĀ  wanted to get out to this low tide island of deadĀ Ā  coral. Look, this tidal island that we’re on isĀ  completely made out of coral, like an atoll. LookĀ Ā  at this. It just crunches under my feet. ButĀ  even the island itself also had some strangeĀ Ā

Living creatures on it, including this green blobĀ  thing. Spider egg sack! It looks like it was,Ā Ā  yeah. Ooh, look at this green thing. Oh my gosh,Ā  check this out. Green and reds and purple, like,Ā Ā  you don’t touch stuff like that. Bright green!Ā  Weird little patterns. So bizarre.Ā Ā

The under the ocean life, and we’re talking aboutĀ  inches, is crazy to me. We haven’t even divedĀ Ā  deep, but I’m like, “There’s some exoticĀ  craziness this far underneath the water.” There is. So we made our way back to the beachsideĀ  cabin and saw the most beautiful sunset.

Over the ocean, skies of pinks andĀ  oranges and purples. And the cloudsĀ Ā  streaking across the sky… It was really nice. Completely ruined, though, in my opinion,Ā by…Ā  the seafood dinner. Oh, TimĀ  doesn’t like fish or seafood. Yeah, pretty much every meal you had there wasĀ  rice and a fried egg and some vegetables. BecauseĀ Ā

Watching you eat your meals was like, no way. I hadĀ  some of the greatest seafood meals of my life. IfĀ Ā  you are a fan of seafood out there, you’re goingĀ  to be salivating over the meals that I had at thisĀ Ā

Beachside cabin. Maybe not by the looks of itĀ  though because I really don’t know how to eatĀ Ā  crab properly and I just made a huge mess. I thinkĀ  that crab that I had that night was the messiestĀ Ā

Meal of my life. But so worth it. She was like a toddlerĀ  eating chocolate ice cream. Like, “It’s so good!” “Help me!” Oh, that’s good! I’m sorry to everybody. This is not how you eat crab but it’s really good. [Southeast Asia Journey – Day 124]

So the next morning we woke up andĀ  it was still cool in the morning. The whole night, the tide had come in and itĀ  physically came in underneath our little abode.Ā Ā  So we hear just the water splashing underneathĀ us. Most people have littleĀ Ā

Machines that make wave sounds and we had…Ā  The real thing. We had the real thing. Good morning, this is amazing! And we wake upĀ  and we look outside, and we went to sleep to aĀ Ā  beautiful sunset, and now here we are rising toĀ  a beautiful sunrise… And… Perfection. Perfection. Wow!

We’re going to sit here and have tea andĀ  coffee and just watch the ocean roll inĀ Ā  right underneath us. It’s amazing.Ā  And to make it even more perfect…Ā  This is where I can agree food-wise – the homemadeĀ  fresh donuts! Is that what you were going with? Yes,Ā Ā

Exactly! They made their own baked goods atĀ  this place. And to have that gorgeous sunriseĀ Ā  with the ocean right in front of you and thenĀ  be offered a platter of freshly baked donuts? Ah! It’s heavenly! Good morning, everyone. So this has been aĀ  fantastic morning so far. We watched the sunrise,Ā Ā

Then we took a little nap. Right now, itĀ  is apparently the height of high tide,Ā Ā  and so it’s the perfect time to go snorkeling.Ā  So we’re going to get some snorkeling equipmentĀ Ā  and see what is below the surface of the watersĀ  out here. So the owner of the beachside cabinĀ Ā

That we were at offered us a chance to goĀ  out on a boat to go snorkeling. All right,Ā Ā  so we are getting a boat to go to the place toĀ  go snorkeling. I’m so excited! Here we go! AndĀ Ā

We had made a friend there, our ScottishĀ  friend Mark, and he said, “Yeah, I want toĀ Ā  join this boat snorkeling experience.” And evenĀ  though we are not so familiar with the ocean,Ā Ā  we wanted to really see more. After that walkĀ  on the beach the night before, we were like,Ā Ā

“Wow, this ocean is amazing. Let’s checkĀ  it out by snorkeling way out in the ocean.” Yay! Yay. Woo! The level of where Marisa and I are on ourĀ  snorkel level experience… We don’t even know ifĀ Ā  they’re called fins or flippers. I know!Ā  Some people say flippers, some people say fins.Ā Ā

And I don’t really know how to use themĀ  very well. You have to like walk backwards andĀ Ā  stuff. It’s very awkward when you’re on land.Ā  But yeah, I kind of like “flippers.” Yeah, Ā Ā

Flippers. So if we’re wrong you can tell us in theĀ  comments but I call them flippers. We put those on,Ā Ā  we put our mask on. Yeah, I got thisĀ  beard, it’s not very manly, I know.Ā  But it’s still there. But it’s just enoughĀ  to not make a flush mask, and I’m not goingĀ Ā

To shave. It’s hard to snorkel with a little bitĀ  of facial hair because it doesn’t make a reallyĀ Ā  good seal. And so when I’m underwater I kind ofĀ  have to hold the mask against my face, andĀ Ā

Then I have to plug my nose. So I’m like givingĀ  myself the Vulcan death grip on my face. It’s so beautiful! And what’s weird to me,Ā  and I’m not under the water very often,Ā Ā  as you all kind of assumed by now, butĀ  there’s this radioactive crackle. And I’mĀ Ā

Like, “What is that?” Yes, there is. The soundsĀ  of the ocean is really interesting. Yeah. And that coral was so beautiful out there.Ā  I mean, huge brain corals and weird kind ofĀ Ā  fan things coming up. And then the fishĀ  darting in and out, yellow fish, blue fish,Ā Ā

Black fish, all sorts of different colors.Ā  One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish. Ā Ā  Blue fish! Beautiful! The coral is so cool. The SuluĀ  Sea, which is part of the Pacific Ocean, is aĀ Ā  fairly small basin, covering only 260,000Ā  square kilometers, or 100,000 square miles. But it’sĀ Ā

Extremely biodiverse, as we were figuringĀ  out. Because it was gorgeous down there. So here’s an interesting fact. Bonus fact! TheĀ  Star Trek character Hikaru Sulu is actually namedĀ Ā  after the Sulu Sea. Apparently Gene RoddenberryĀ  said that he wanted a name to representĀ Ā

All of Asia, and not a specific country.Ā  And so he chose the Sulu Sea. But our time snorkeling in the ocean came to anĀ Ā  end, and we got out and back intoĀ  the boat, and headed back to shore. Oh my God.

I’m a Klingon! Oh my gosh. Wow.Ā  That was so cool. We had a little bit moreĀ Ā  planned for the day after our excitingĀ  snorkeling. We wanted to go to the TipĀ Ā  of Borneo, and there were more beaches to come inĀ  our immediate future. With a very very differentĀ Ā

Type of beach experience. This is true. OneĀ  that we had never done the likes of before. So thank you so much for watching this video. IĀ  hope you liked it. If you did, please give us aĀ Ā  big thumbs up, and hit the subscribe button below,Ā  and we’ll be seeing you next time. StayĀ Ā

For Tim and I, diving into the ocean is like arriving on a distant planet – it’s full of strange and exotic creatures that are completely unknown to us, some of which can be quite dangerous. So as we found ourselves on the shores of the Sulu Sea, one of the most biodiverse expanses of ocean on earth, we were apprehensive to go into the waters where there were spiky and bizarre marine creatures living just below the surface.

But it was the beauty of our rustic beachside cabin in East Malaysia (a place with a view to die for) that finally drew us into the Sulu Sea. Because we might only be here once in our lives…

And so why not?

  2. Seafood lover here šŸ‘‹
That pink starfish looks like punk metal head Patrick🤘 be careful with venomous stone fish, blue ring octopus etc they like to hang around at the shallow corals/rock like that..also that green coral forest is beautiful

  3. Lovely! The accommodations, the food, the location, the marine life, and snorkeling are all fantastic to show on your ride..
I really loved the epic snorkel music to set the adventurous mood. Flippers and fins are both correct.
Most serious divers call them fins and most vacation users call them flippers.
We smear Vaseline on our mustache to seal the mask. You get used to it.
As always, a fun and interesting episode!

  4. I can hardly see the colourful fishes 🐟🐟🐠🐔you mentioned while snorkelling. Maybe not captured by the camera but I do see some anchovies šŸ˜‚ plus a mermaid too šŸ˜‚ 😜 šŸ˜ Regarding the shoe or flipper etc, well I call it duck šŸ¦† legs. Hahaha my silly version šŸ˜‚

  5. Yes there are poisonous creatures under the sea, eg box jelly fish, snakes and eels, lion fish, certain octopus etc etc. That is why when diving, we should not touch anything.

  6. The one thing I don't understand is: When you arrive in places like these, how can you convince yourself to leave again? šŸ˜³šŸ˜

  7. It’s only good food, when you wear it too. Tim you need to dive into the seafood. It’s great. We love snorkeling too, saw great sealife in Bonaire and in Lake Gatun, Panama.

  8. I've been waiting a week for this video! šŸ˜€Love all the videos from you guys.. not just because I'm Malaysian but because of the casual, relaxed, fun, adventurous and goodhearted narration and couples jokes haha… Keep it up and wish you can travel around Peninsular Malaysia one day KL-Malacca-Johor Bahru-Mersing-Kuantan-Kuala Terengganu-Kota Bharu-Perlis-Langkawi-Kedah-Penang-Perak-Cameron Highlands-KL. Trust me.. lots to see and capture

  9. another nice video guys. good to see that the keep the beach at the cabin very clean.
but let me pre warned that some are not like that šŸ˜… mainly because tidal flow that bring in ocean trash or areas that are inhabited by the stateless Sea Gypsies.
Plase do visit those areas too to see it first hand. Continuous efforts are being done by the Government and NGOs to provide educations and facilites for them but some things are difficult to change šŸ˜…
