🇲🇾| Johor Bahru Is Maybe NOT So TOURIST FRIENDLY| Street Interviews In Malaysia 2024

We are in Johor Bahru, only minutes away from  Singapore, and in this episode, we’re going to try   to find a good mixture of people to see if this  city is worth giving a visit. Is this your first

Time here? I’m here pretty often. And why do you  come over here from Singapore? It’s only across   the river. Here for food mainly. I’m a teacher,  so in the afternoon when I’m free and done with my

Marking, I ride my motorcycle, park it over there,  and then I ride here and then I eat a lot of good   food. So it’s easy to go across the border by  motorbike. Yep, yep, and in the afternoon, right,

You don’t get stuck in a traffic jam. I meet  quite a few people from Singapore here…? Yeah,   yeah, we do that all the time, yeah. As long as  you don’t get caught in a jam, this place is a

Nice place to come to. Nice. So you don’t need  a visa or something, you just cross? No, no, no,   just with our passport, right here, man. Oh yeah,  you got your Singapore passport. There, you go,   nice. Were you born and raised in Singapore? Born  and raised. Nice. What is making this place so

Good other than the food and it, I can imagine  it’s quite cheap compared to Singapore. It’s,   I would say, inexpensive, chip can be a little  bit offensive. Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah,   yeah, yeah. It’s definitely less expensive than  compared to Singapore. Any other reason why you’re

Here? For cheap fuel to. Oh yeah. The petrol here,  I can say that it’s cheap. Yeah, it’s like, yeah,   exactly, without being disrespectful,  it’s very cheap. It’s like 50, maybe,   Sing… 1/3 the price of Singapore. Sorry? One  third the price of Singapore. Oh, there you go,

Yeah. Would you recommend Johor to go? For sure,  for sure, yeah, yeah, yeah, 100%, yeah. And why?   Inexpensive and good food. How about the people  here? Is it…? Yeah, very friendly. Yeah? Yeah.   Very approachable, very friendly, very nice.  Is it different than Singapore, let’s say, the

Friendliness? Similar. Similar? Yeah. What can I  do here? At night we have a night market here. You   also can go to Puteri Harbor. Okay. Have a nice  view there. Are you going on holiday sometimes,   somewhere else, or you staying here in JB? I’m  staying here at JB, yeah. You don’t go on holiday?

I’m going on holiday, but maybe you just go to  Bali, I think. Bali? Yeah, yeah. Not to Singapore?   Uh, no. Why not? Always go there to Singapore. Oh,  you always go there? Yeah, ah, my family there,

I have there. Do you also work there sometimes  or…? No. No, no. Is it easy for you to work   in Singapore? Yeah, it’s easy to find a job but  it’s tiring because so many jams there. Yeah,

You also have to travel all the time. Does it take  a long time to travel from here to Singapore? It   depends on the weekend, it will be longer,  I think. Εven with your own. car? Yeah, own   car. Ηow do you like it here?

I try. Ι tell you  I try to like it here. but today I’m… You know, you’re not feeling it here? Because maybe it’s not  sunny, I’m not sure. Is this your first time here?

Oh, it’s my first time to JB, always stay in KL.  So why you come here? Other cities I already went   there. So it’s time to check it out. Do you go  to Singapore or…? Not yet, maybe next trip. And

You go back to China after this, or what are you  doing? It’s long time ago I went back to China,   maybe two years ago. So you live in Malaysia? Oh,  no, I’m studying here, so I must stay here. Do you

Study in KL? Oh, yeah, study in KL. Compared to  KL, how do you like it here? I don’t know because   I’m not loving it here. How many days you going  to spend here? Two days, after tomorrow I will

Be back. What you going to do now? You’re  going to eat some food and relax? Uh, yes,   I try to buy something, and tomorrow I’ll go see  LEGO Land. Do you have a message to the world or   some wisdom to pass on, could be anything?

Just  do it. We started just 2 days ago in Singapore We have been to Mexico and the US before. Oh, on  your bikes? Yes. You’re traveling all the way with   your bikes, like around the world? Yes, but not  only the northern hemisphere. We just arrived two

Days ago and we don’t have a big plan, but we are  heading towards Germany. What!? So yeah. Via which   countries? Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, probably  Vietnam, Laos, and then we will see. And why are

You doing this on the bike? A cheap way to travel  and yeah, so better than flying. Nice. And it’s a   perfect pace. It’s, I don’t know, you are faster  than walking and you see everything. It’s like

You don’t miss so much. I don’t know, it’s just a  perfect pace. Cycling from Singapore to Malaysia,   it’s fun with all the motorbikes and  traffic rush hour, so it’s, yeah, a nice,   amazing experience. Yeah, the border crossing was  really funny. Yeah, what was said? It’s funny,

So many scooters and like if you don’t know  where to go, then you’re like, ‘Oh [ __ ], we   don’t know where to go,’ and then all these  scooters are appearing and then you’re… Okay,

Nice. It was just…. Did it take a long time?  Half an hour. When you arrived here in the city,   how do you like it compared to Singapore? I don’t  see a huge difference yet. At the moment, no, no,

No. Is that the same for you, or I mean it’s not  as clean, it’s still clean, but not as clean,   and it’s a little bit more loud. I feel it’s  louder. Yeah, okay. But I like it. Yeah, it’s both

Is nice. I don’t know, after this, you’re going  back to work or you are you traveling forever? We   have to because after this, we are running out of  money and totally… We have to work afterwards.   How long is your trip in total? Two years. Wow!  Hopefully, hopefully, two years. And what was your

Drive to travel? I wanted to travel for a long  time already. I didn’t do such a big trip before,   and I wanted to do it for a long time, but never  had the opportunity. Ι needed to save the money.

Βen had to work. I had to work, and now we saved  some money and could go. A message to the world?   I think just appreciating what you see along  the road and be open towards the people, yeah,

And ride the bike. How long have you been here,  sir? Uh, just a couple of days. I came from   Singapore. Is that where you work and live? No,  visiting, tourists. What’s your plan here, sir? I   was planning on traveling around the Malaysian  peninsula, for, for a time. yeah. Okay, a few

Weeks then or something? Oh, nice. And then after  Malaysia, what do you do? Hopefully Indonesia.   How do you like it over here? I love it. I love  Asia, yeah. I last year I was in Vietnam, I was in

Thailand, and then I flew to Japan. And I usually  travel by motorcycle. Usually? Not this time? This   time I’m trying. I didn’t have much luck finding  the bike I wanted here, so I’m going to KL.

Probably better luck there. How do you like the  city here? The city is very nice. Α little busy   for me. I don’t like big cities. But you had to  kind of start here because of the bike situation,

Let’s say. Yeah, and I was close to Singapore, I  just took public transport and came across. How   about the difference between Singapore and this  city? I think Singapore… Well, the area I state   is very touristy, yeah, okay. It’s different,  it’s a lot more expensive there, of course, but,

So far I’ve had a good experience. I haven’t  traveled much, so I can’t give you a complete   answer. Did you just spend time here in this area  then? Yeah, because I’m kind of limited to bus   travel and walking. Yeah that makes sense. What’s  the best thing that happened to you in JB then?

Just um talking to people. Which is what I enjoy.  Every time I go to a new country it takes me a   little while to get used to the way things work.  That makes sense. Yeah. Is this your first time

In Malaysia? Yes, yes. I would like to go to the  East Island also, hopefully, if I go there then I   can go by land cross over to Indonesia. Indonesia,  that’s such a, I’m sure you know, it’s such a long

Many, so many islands. So I’m trying to figure  out how to do it with getting a bike and trying   to. I haven’t figured all that out yet. Nice.  There’s a bit of a weird question maybe out

Of the blue but do you have insurance to travel  around or how do you do that? Usually, I get um,   travel insurance. I think it’s called Nomad, it’s  pretty comprehensive and so they say because if   you’re into like adventure more adventurous things  like I’m riding dangerous motorcycles and stuff.

They cover more things. You pay a little more I  think but then the long run is worth it. I always   find it interesting. We basically in Southeast  Asia only traveling to show people how we travel   but also other people’s experiences. What’s the  best experience so far in Southeast Asia also the

Other experience you had before? I think just the  people and the cultures I enjoy. Sites are good,   a lot of beautiful places, but I think just  to experience the different cultures. And a   good thing now as American speaker almost anywhere  you go, the young people, they all speak English

Pretty much. I was very surprised which is good  for me. I think a lot of Americans they maybe   hesitate to go abroad because of the language. But  you think it’s quite here. And I appreciate it. I   don’t take it for granted because I don’t expect  everyone around the world to speak English because

I speak English. You know, but I appreciate that  they make the effort. Also considering the other   journeys what did you learn from Southeast Asia?  I love the culture here as opposed to the Western   culture in Europe and in America. I think  the people here. hey’re more family oriented,

And they’re more social, I think. They look after  each other and also I think the governments too.   I don’t know, I don’t live here. Maybe you have a  different maybe a different outlook but compared   to what I’ve seen in America. Oh yeah and here.  Would you recommend people to come to this city?

Yes, I think you know some cities are maybn  not geared towards tourists. Everybody wants   to go to KL you know the most famous places. But  I think you have a richer experience when you go   to all different parts of a country. Not just  the best hotels or the fanciest restaurants.

So Johor Bahru, definitely go also? Oh yes.  A message to let’s say our American audience,   which message would you give? I would say  travel. Travel, travel. That’s the best uh,   learning experience in the world I think yeah, you  can go through books and you can go to television,

You can go to… But it’s nothing like the actual  experience when you do it by yourself, first hand.   Johor Bahru, JB. It is definitely worth giving  it a visit. I recommend staying here for only two

Maybe three nights because there’s not a lot to  do for tourists but yeah there is a Legoland and   there are a lot of good restaurants here and it’s  got a different vibe to this city than anywhere

Else we’ve been so far in Malaysia. You going to  have to check it out it is a border city and you   do feel that especially when you go away from this  particular part of town if you go a little bit in

The suburbs… I don’t know… But definitely  here in town in the center I think it’s quite   nice. I also hope we can show this in a vlog that  is coming up. We’re leaving soon for Singapore

Then back to Thailand and we’ll carry on our trip  in Southeast Asia. Thank you so much for watching   till the very end I would like to say from Johor  Bahru, JB Malaysia bye for now and stay champ!

We chat with random people on the streets of South East Asia to see what the places are like. Is it worth visiting Johor Bahru (known as JB) or should you skip this due to the lack of things to do here? Is this place tourist-friendly or do people recommend checking this city out on your next trip to Malaysia?

  1. Certainly a great place for Singaporeans to visit for a way less expensive meal than they would be used to paying for at home. Also an ideal opportunity to fill up the petrol tank and save a motza. Nice video Chai. Certainly enjoyed the last interviewee the most. Great work 🤩

  2. The Singapore JB price comparison (one third) is an exaggeration. It's actually about/less than half, because although the exchange is 3.5 to 1, prices are double in their local currency. Example, noodles cost SGD4 in SG but costs 8 to 10RM in JB. This information can be extrapolated to many other things.

  3. There not a river across Singapore but it is a straits of Johore sea. Johore have a lot of nice place to visit. Have a beautiful island, beach, shopping and food paradise.

  4. Fun fact about Johor, its 3x times more bigger than Singapore, but lack for touristy spot, for local, jb is nice place to living

  5. The American tourist can rent a bike in East Malaysia and drive it from coast to coast. Might be too much of a hassle to ship a bike. In any case…have fun.

  6. In essence JB is where Singaporeans shop and dine. Gasoline in Malaysia is the second cheapest in Southeast Asia. Which is why both Singaporeans and Thai's buy and often even smuggle gasoline from Malaysia 😂

  7. I live in Johor Bahru, but I haven’t been to Johor Bahru city center for many years. You can go to mount austin, sutera utama, bukit indah, eco palladium to get closer to the daily life of Johor Bahru people.

  8. Did the German couple have their bikes shipped to Singapore and then they flew there? Did they just start their trip and they have 2 years of pedaling before they get home to Germany? I would like to hear their thoughts at the end of that trip!

  9. Visitors to SE Asia should try the 2nd city tour . It will give a different experience.

So go to JB instead of KL. Then Chiang Mai instead of Bangkok. Luang Prabang in Laos. Siem Reap in Cambodia. Da Nang in Vietnam. Cebu in the Philippines. Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

  10. Years ago, and maybe still today, Singapore Customs would check your automobile gas tank when you leav; your tank would need to be 3/4 full. DOes anyone know, is it the same rule for motorbikes?

  11. Nice people selection interview done by you Chai , ❤ love to see people sharing there secrets 🤐 advice.. Great video bro , more to see.

  12. I'm in the north (Alor Setar) and tourists only stop over to transfer between Langkawi and Penang. I was showing someone around recently and he's really not feeling it. Urban sprawl doesn't help, with tourist attractions spread out so far from each other needing private vehicles for commuting since public transit is non-existent outside KL. Most Malaysians keep recommending places that are hard to get to as tourists, not understanding that most tourists don't want to do that because it's hard to do unless they have a local guide driving them around. There's a reason touristy cities like Georgetown and Melaka flourish, and that's because they're walkable.

  13. I’m from northern Johor district of Muar…to be honest, I just went to JB like 3 times in my life so far 😂😂😂 nothing special there actually, everything are overprice due to proximity to Singapore…I just go to Melaka or KL to shopping or food…Muar also a food haven in Johor…no need to travel 2 hours to Johor Baru to find any food 😂😂😂
