Crossing into Rwanda 🇷🇼 The Cleanest Country of Africa S7 EP.35 | Pakistan to South Africa
The last page… Thank you very much. Assalam Alekum Everyone and Welcome Back to the Channel from Bwindi National Park. It is situated at the border area of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo… Very close to where Uganda touches Rwanda. And this does tell you about our plans for the day.
We have already seen gorillas here. Time to go to our next country. And that happens to be Rwanda. The border of Rwanda is about 60 km from here. There are two borders. Let’s see which one of the two suits us. I feel that the one named Cyanika may be more comfortable to cross.
Besides, there are some interesting places to visit near that border. So we’ll try to cross through that border. Around 60 km from here. And it’s gonna take 2 hours according to Google. One hour to go down to the main road. And then one hour ride from there to the border.
As for where we are gonna stay for the night, that I haven’t decided yet. Because we don’t know how long it will take at the border. So once we have successfully crossed the border, then we’ll decide to stay near the border or keep riding further. Time to get a good breakfast.
And keep praying for the weather to get better. Because it’s quite foggy at the moment. Don’t know what the visibility will be like at the road. That’s why I’d like to wait a bit before we leave. Thank you very much. See you again some day. Bismillah… In the name of Allah…
*Prayer for the journey* We pray to Allah for a memorable day and a fun ride. It’s 9 in the morning. Right time to leave. I actually woke up rather early but it was too foggy to ride. However, the weather is now getting better. The border is not too far away from here.
It rained a lot last night. Since it’s a tropical forest, it can start raining any time. But this scenery is just too good. Of course, gorilla safari is a big reason to visit here… That said, this forest is no less awesome. Oops, need to be a little careful.
I expect less jeep traffic here at this hour. Because mostly tourists reach the gate around 7 in the morning. And then the next group starts coming to the lodges between 3 pm to 5 pm. You can see that such great tourism here is mainly because of gorillas. Almost every lodge here is full.
And this is not the peak season. That happens during the school holidays in Europe; June to August. This section was a bit rough. But this off road gets better after some time. Only a few patches are rough. Let’s get off here. Tourism has changed a lot of things here.
Many people have their livelihoods attached to this industry. Mostly people work in this park. Because tourism has opened new avenues for the locals. That’s what most people here are doing. And gradually the poaching has almost disappeared from here. Tourism is very important for the national parks and wildlife here.
What a wonderful view this is. Good Lord Look at these clouds Awesome All the villagers are out on the road so early in the day. Quite lively. These villages are really beautiful. Rich in agriculture. You can see agricultural fields everywhere. I think we are finally on the main road again.
Don’t know where to go next. I think we need to go this way. Let’s stand aside for a minute and turn on the navigation. It’s showing me that the border is closed today. Today is Sunday. The border is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
However, when I called my tour guide, he told me that it’s open. And that I should go there. I have been in touch with a clearing agent for this border as well. To make this border crossing swift and easy for us. Gonna be an hour before we get there. What an awesome forest.
Loving this ride. And this road is simply amazing. With all the curves and zigzags. People smile at you and greet you warmly. On top of that, this beautiful scenery is all you need. What’s that?? Welcome to Cyanika. The last town in Uganda. It has been the best ride here so far.
The whole area is awesome. You can see that there is almost no pollution here. Riding early in the day here is such an amazing experience. Greenery all around you and this wonderful road beneath. Almost there. I think there aren’t many people at the border today. There’s a proper market out here.
This is the Ugandan side. Let’s ask them where we need to go now. Is that him? The agent I mean. That’s the area over there. I’m good. Thank you. OK. Good. Good. Yes. How are you? How are you? I’m good. Thank you.
So first we have to do this on Uganda side and then the other side. OK. This is not a one stop border. Let’s get the customs clearance from here first. Bismillah… In the name of Allah Thank you very much. Bye Bye Uganda Welcome to Rwanda
I had the motorcycle cleared on Carnet in Uganda. Got an exit stamp on it now. And the other thing… Immigration will be done on this side. Oops As soon as we entered Rwanda, the motorcycle stopped. I hope everything is fine. So you will do the motorcycle clearance. OK Lets see
Which office is this..?? Can’t see any signboard.. Which one is for Rwanda and which one is for Uganda?? The last page… Thank you very much. Wait a second. Thank you very much. Nice meeting you. OK. Thank you. Welcome to Rwanda This border crossing took a total of 50 minutes. Including both sides.
Quite quick. The first thing we did on the Uganda side was to get the motorcycle cleared. It was on carnet so I got the exit stamp on it. Then they checked if I had paid the road tax or not. Luckily I had the receipt.
I paid a tax of about 50 USD when we reached Uganda. Then the immigration officer stamped my documents. And the Rwanda officer gave us the entry stamp. I already have the visa for East Africa that I got from Kenya. A 3 month visa for Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda for 100 USD.
That’s why you didn’t need to get the new visa. The agent helped me get the motorcycle cleared on carnet for Rwanda. However, they did ask me to off load my luggage and have it pass through the scanners. Luckily, I had already put my drone in my pocket, thanks to its small size.
So no issues there. Otherwise, drone could be a problem in these countries. So if you have a small drone, kindly keep it in your pocket. And let the rest of your luggage pass through the scanners. Otherwise, the scanner would have caught the drone. Other than that, no problem at all.
We paid him 50 thousand in local currency. That’s around 12 to 13 USD. Previously, we were riding on the left side but now we are on the right side. So that has changed. Also, they speak French in Rwanda. However, the officers we met at the border could speak English.
So that worked out fine for us. Just need to get a SIM card from here now. Also need to get some dollars converted to the local currency. The first town here will be Musanze or Ruhengeri. Will get the money changed there. So far, I’m still using the internet from Rwanda to get directions.
We are headed to a cafe that I found online. Rwanda is considered to be the cleanest country in Africa. So far, I haven’t seen any garbage, any paper or plastic thrown randomly on the road. But we will keep on observing this. It’s just the border area anyway.
It’s almost a 22 minute rider from here. They have installed European cameras here. These are like pillars. Didn’t see them anywhere before here. That means we need to keep our speed in check. Quite a lively town. We may not get a SIM here as it’s a Sunday. Just saw an MTN shop…
But it was closed. Everything was open in Uganda. But not in Rwanda. Just spotted another MTN shop here. Let’s see if we can get a SIM card from here. Hey. How are you? Is MTN closed? OK. Thank you. So here they also have MTN and Airtel.
Compared to cars, there are more people on bicycles and on foot. That’s why we should be really careful with our speed. Since the driving side is also changed here, we might need a little time to adjust. Rwanda was a French colony whereas Uganda was British. That’s the reason you will notice some differences.
Especially the houses here look different from those in Uganda. Wow. That’s one overloaded bicycle. A lot of people ride bicycles here. Almost every other person is on bicycle. Not many motorcycles if compared to Uganda. So far, that’s the most amount of change we have experienced after a border crossing.
We can see many differences. Kenya to Tanzania, back to Kenya and then to Uganda… Most of that was quite similar. We have reached the first big town here; Musanze. According to Google maps, it’s also called Ruhengeri. But locals call it Musanze. This is also a tourist town.
To visit the Volcanoes national park or do gorilla safari, you have to come to this town. The bicycles here are quite similar to the Sohrab bicycles we have in Pakistan. It’s a very different world. Didn’t experience this in Africa before. The road is more beautiful after we entered the city.
The cleanliness here is next level. You can’t see any dirt of garbage around you. That’s how clean it is. I mean the locals are not too educated or rich… The country has a very normal economy. Such cleanliness is normally linked with these things. Seems like a football match taking place here.
Apparently, cleanliness has nothing to do with how rich a country is. Look at that… Awesome… Very impressive. There’s the cafe. Let’s stop here. Would be great if we can find a safe parking spot. Migano Cafe… That’s where we are going. Not just good internet but we also got a great cappuccino here.
Also got some fries, fish and salad. Seemed right to have our lunch here. We have also booked a hotel using internet. So we are staying in Musanze tonight. The capital is about 2 hours ride from here. Since it’s a tourist town, we can visit a couple of places here.
So I thought if we stayed here tonight… We’ll get a SIM card and get some local currency. And we’ll also visit a couple of places before we go further. Let’s enjoy our lunch for now. And after that, we’ll go to our hotel which is not far from here.
It is said that the best coffee in the world is in Rwanda. And this coffee is actually great. As soon as I was done with my lunch… And thought to go to my hotel which was just across the street from the cafe… It started raining cats and dogs.
Roads and everything else are now deserted. We better stay here for some more time. Will leave once the rain stops. Can’t even ride for even a couple of minutes in this rain. The rain has stopped here. I’ve made a blunder. I had put my phone on charging here.
Didn’t pull it out in time. Now, the water from rain has gone inside. Need to dry it properly, otherwise it will get rust. Don’t wanna get it damaged. Better not to make a mistake like this again but it’s natural. I forgot that my charger was still plugged in. And that’s how it happened.
Seems like a nice place… Clean… Spacious… Nice parking. The entrance of the hotel is pretty nice. Got ourselves a very nice room. It’s a very tidy and comfortable room. The washroom is also good. For this, I paid 36 USD, including the breakfast tomorrow. Will see that tomorrow.
Anyways, I checked its ratings and they were quite good. Hopefully it will be nice. As we travel in Rwanda… We’ll share more about the people, culture, historical sites, nature and national parks with you. Just like I have been doing so far in this tour.
Will try to share useful information about Rwanda with all of you. The content that I make involves a lot of hard work and costs a lot of money. My motivation has always been to share meaningful content with you. That’s why your support is very important.
