I asked locals: “Why do you like Phrae?” (Thailand’s City of Art)
Phrae might be the best small town I’ve seen in Thailand. In this episode of 30 Thai Cities in 30 Days, I explore a northern Thai town that feels creative, kindhearted, and deeply livable.
Phrae surprised me with its teakwood culture, bamboo-fiber clothing, local coffee farms, distilleries, markets, food, and overall sense of craft. It feels joyful. It feels tasteful. And for me, it felt like one of the strongest expat towns I’ve visited anywhere in Thailand.
I talk with locals, walk the market, visit the Free Thai Museum, try the food, check out the gym, and sit down with Udom for one of the most interesting expat conversations of the trip.
Udom’s extended interview
Key moments
00:01 – 03:05
First impressions of Phrae and why it immediately felt special
03:07 – 05:49

14:47 – 16:32
Why Phrae calls itself the City of Art
16:35 – 22:00
Coffee, local craft, teak, gin, and the creative identity of the town
22:10 – 32:24
Walking street market and why it feels like one of Thailand’s best. Local fashion, bamboo fiber clothing, and slow-life culture
33:26 – 41:57
Nightlife and talk with Tyger
42:10 – 45:09
Coffee tasting
48:00 – 59:30
Sit-down with Udom on identity, belonging, and why he is proud to live in Phrae
1:01:10
My final answer: would I live here as an expat?
About Philip + Contact
My vlog style is exploring places by talking with people — asking questions about the town or city, and what they love about it (or not). Places become most interesting when exploring local history, having conversations, and experiencing the daily rhythm and life through the eyes of locals, expats, and visitors alike.
I find each place has its own energy. My travel is inspired by the desire to gain a broader perspective. The more I travel, the less I know.

A special thank you to Tyger, Udom, May, Korbua, and the people of Phrae who shared their voices with me — and with you, the viewers — while I was making this video.
There’s no place like Phrae. It’s become one of my favorite places in Thailand.
My return trip is already booked.
A slightly more natural version for YouTube:

My next stops for 30 Thai Cities in 30 Days:
Lampang, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani.
Have you been to Phrae? If yes, did you love it?
You are right, Phrae does have that Napa Valley feeling. I noticed that the buildings architecture and the stores were very pristine, and well merchandised… Very kool place to visit and live if you met a great girl to spend rest of your days with… Great video…
All the women you spoke with in Phrae were charming, what a sweet town.
Im Thai and have to visit NAPA VALLEY California before i love it 👍👍👍
really LOVING this series of 30 in 30 !!! so cool to see the "off the beaten path" Thai towns that tourists are unaware of — Thank You Philip 🤠 — your drone shots are super awesome too !!! 😎
Questions:
1. How is the internet connection?
2. What do you do during the burning season?
What is the name of this resort. I have plan to visit this province.
You did justice to Phrae. By the way I would like to know the name of the resort you stayed, and how much does it cost per night?
I have always loved Phrae we also pass thru when driving. The one thing I always noticed in Phrae is all the clothes is that nice indigo blue! That museum was interesting…The sign you showed @13:05 said Japan invaded Thailand on Dec 8th 1941. That was the day after they bombed Pearl Harbor Hawaii
Save travel bro 👍
Phrae is a province where the local population has lived for a long time. Everyone lives in their own home, and there are no new immigrants from other provinces. People feel a sense of peace and tranquility here.
High recommend, close Nan province another mountain cool city, amazing scenic route for lover driving 😊
Great video.
The cliche american foreigner walking with cap and sunglasses at night ^^
Great Video! What a beautiful lovely person May is. In regards to the Thailand's WW2 involvement. It was rumored that Thailand played 2 roles meaning acting like they were Japan's Ally to prevent being under Japan but US's undercover ally.
Great episode Phil.
So have you got a suggestion for a hotel in downtown so I won’t need a motorbike.
Thanks 🙏
You didn’t put Mae’s restaurant info in the description. Would love to go there and support their business.
