Tsugaike Kogen sits at the northern end of Hakuba Valley, quietly holding its ground as one of the most rewarding yet underappreciated ski areas in all of Japan. While resorts like Happo-One tend to draw the biggest crowds and the loudest praise, seasoned skiers who make the journey to Tsugaike are rarely disappointed, and many find themselves coming back season after season. The resort sits at an elevation that catches generous amounts of the famous Japow, that impossibly light, dry powder snow that falls in the Japan Alps and has made Hakuba a pilgrimage destination for skiers from Australia, Europe, and beyond.

The mountain offers a wide, open character that sets it apart from some of its more densely treed neighbors. At the top, broad bowls open up under big winter skies, and on a clear day the views across the Japan Alps are nothing short of extraordinary. Foreign visitors often remark that Tsugaike feels like a place where you can breathe, where the terrain unfolds generously and the crowds thin out in a way that lets you find your rhythm and hold it across long, satisfying runs.

For intermediate skiers, Tsugaike is close to ideal. The groomed runs are well-maintained and offer just enough variety to keep a week of skiing interesting without ever feeling intimidating. The mid-mountain zones are particularly enjoyable, threading through light forest sections and opening onto wider pistes that let you build real speed. Advanced skiers and those chasing powder will find plenty to explore in the upper bowls and along the edges of the groomed trails, where untracked snow lingers longer than at busier resorts in the valley.

One of the great practical advantages of Tsugaike for foreign tourists is the relative ease of the experience. Lift queues move quickly, the gondola is efficient, and the general pace of the mountain is relaxed without ever feeling sleepy. English signage has improved considerably over recent years, and the resort staff are accustomed to international visitors. Several rental shops at the base offer good quality equipment, which means traveling light from overseas remains a very realistic option.

The base area has a comfortable, unpretentious feel. A handful of restaurants and cafes serve warming bowls of ramen and curry rice, and on a cold afternoon after a long morning of runs, sitting down to a proper Japanese lunch with snow falling outside the window is one of those experiences that makes a Hakuba ski trip feel genuinely complete. The resort also connects to the broader Hakuba Valley lift pass system, meaning a stay centered around Tsugaike can still include day trips to Happo-One, Goryu, and Cortina without any logistical difficulty.

Tsugaike rewards the curious traveler, the one willing to look slightly beyond the obvious. It is a mountain that gives generously to those who simply show up, point their skis downhill, and let Japan do the rest.

  1. HAKUBA TSUGAIKE is known as the QUEEN OF GREEN in Japan, one of the biggest and widest with so many green runs for beginners, a 6km green forest trail, one of the longest red intermediate trail in Hakuba, a real jump terrain park, and double black diamond off-piste powder forest areas, one of the biggest in Hakuba. It's less crowded and slightly cheaper than some of the more famous Hakuba areas. Check out the video and find out about it!!!

  4. Thanks for your detailed video! May I ask when this video was taken? Particularly for the part of Kane-no-naruoka Slope and Karamatsu Slope?
I'm just trying to get a sense of the crowd density in that area as a reference. Thank you very much!
