まあ普通に考えて今時スマホ持ってない人間なんて想定しないからコンビニの店員がそっけないのも分からないではない。画面や地図見せながらだったらちゃんと対応すると思うよ。
The thing is Michael really likes camping. He goes camping pretty often so he wanted to do it in Japan also

Aww Ludwig came to your stream!
Ludwig appearing in the chat is awesome!
16:14 – isn't all humor pretty much just saying unexpected things? E.g. the obvious answer to "what do you miss the most" is probably "my girlfriend", so that's what you're expecting, so when you say that you miss YouTube shorts more, that's unexpected, and that's what's funny. It's the same with the prisons and guns answer, it's a stereotype (well, based on reality), but it's obviously not something you'd say you genuinely miss, so the joke is that you say it in a serious tone, even though it's clearly not meant seriously. You don't need to explicitly say that it's a joke or point out how ridiculous that is (I think I see that fairly often in Japanese comedy) because you know it's a sarcastic comment from the context. I'm sure you understand the concept of irony and sarcasm, I don't think one can really explain sarcasm because when you break it down, it just sounds stupid. If you grew up in a western country where most humor relies on sarcasm, it's natural.
I can explain American sarcasm to you. Ok so it requires that you, as the person hearing the sarcasm/joke can understand that what the person is saying is not "right", and often it is exactly the wrong thing to say, especially in how they were using it. It relies on you being able to hear that it is wrong, and trust your gut instinct in knowing that the person is being humorous and not serious. It often relies on "subverting expectations" which is a phrase that refers to the concept of things happening in a way you did not expect. The way they sometimes deliver their spoken lines is something described as "Dry Humor" which is really popular with comedians from England, where they will often deliver jokes in TV shows with a serious tone and sometimes with no cues that they are even telling a joke. People enjoy it because the comedy will often catch you off guard, you suddenly realize what they said was funny but there might not be any laugh track on acknowledgement of what they even said. Like sarcasm it relies on the viewer trusting their own intelligence enough to know it was a joke, and sometimes it feels good when you pick up on a subtle joke that others did not notice, it almost feels more personable. Jokes do not always NEED to be over the top loud and obvious, comedy is something we enjoy for fun, we do not need to understand every statement with 100% accuracy, so if people miss jokes delivered in a subtle way like that it is ok. There are TV shows I watch where if I watch it a second time I might catch some jokes that I did not even really notice the first time, which also adds to the fun of it all.
Really they are both just used in bantering ways, often with people you become comfortable enough with and can trust that they will automatically know when you are jokes and when you are serious, because over time they have gotten to know you and your personality. Michael Reeves (Mr Harry Potter) can make that joke about Hitler, because we all know he just likes making the most insane comments a person can get away with making 🤣 so there is zero percent of our mind that would ever think he actually means something like that, so we are free to laugh at him saying the most absurd/crazy things ever 😂
When children use sarcasm over here (and sometimes adults) or people making a sarcastic joke around people who do not know them well enough yet, they will often deliver the joke with a "mocking" or exaggerated tone, so people that do not know them can even instantly pick up that what they are saying is not meant to be taken seriously, allowing them to cue in on the fact that it is just playful banter.
my Japanese friends said that Tokyo gets colder than Hokkaido. I fought them on this but they kept telling me its true, what do you think?
It's just dark humor, also gallows humor, definitely not for everyone, I wouldn't say it's just humor in the US, here it works as well, but it also depends on the situation and the audience. There must be people with that humor in Japan even if it's a niche too. But it's also bravado to cope with the situation, no? Better than just complain that it's cold and sometimes scary to ride.
The Hitler manga reveal is the funniest bit in this series
Nice people are nice people, Ive been to 4 dozen countries and met countless amazing people.
I was in Hachinohe Aquarium and asked a Worker where a good place to get lunch was and they pretty much said "you know what ill go with you." and they walked us to a cold buckwheat soba restaraunt on the coast like 1km away from the aquarium and it was some of the best noodles ive ever had, We were a group of like 4 american dudes.
I was in Yokohama and we decided to take a short cut down a pretty sketchy alley, and the guy grabbed my arm and really freaked me out… he pointed to his skin and then to mine and said "Not same is dangerous." apparently the area we were going to was a pretty dense yaskuza area and he was protecting us…
I was with a friend in Shanghai and we were getting a beer and when we were paying this old Chinese guy behind us starts yelling at the cashier and grabs my card, i was extremely confused and a little on edge, the cashier was charging us $20ish a beer and was ripping us off because we were foreigners and the old man was protecting us.
I have countless stories because the average person around the world is a good person.
Thank you for watching the series! I really enjoyed seeing your reactions
Bikes in Japan is pretty common aswell. I watch bike vlogs from Japan and there are many riders.
American sarcasm and jokes like Ludwig's dream are mostly using a form of irony. Situational irony is the difference between what is expected versus what actually happened. So in the joke about his dream, the expected part is that they make it to Cape Soya and go home. The joke is that the "what actually happened" COULD be that they died and that would be a huge gap. The bigger the gap, the funnier generally.
fr. energy drink addiction is a real thing. had to adjust after two years 3 a day. demanding job. nearly double redbull can sized. very bad for you. just rest, eat well, and exercise a bit.
really stopping energy drinks was so hard.
Their sarcasm isn't even just American humor, I know for a fact a large portion of Europe is using this type of humor as well lol
They say stupid stuff, like saying they miss YouTube shorts more than their girlfriends, or that they miss the guns and prisons the most from America. It's funny cause it's silly. Same with giving each other opposite/bad advice on what they should do when driving a bike on a cold and wet road. Do you not use sarcasm in Japan? I am curious
This is one of the coolest youtube series ever made and I'm patiently waiting for T2T China 🙂 great reacts Tanuki always love the personal insights you provide.
this series was a lot of fun! ありがとうございます!
Loved this series. Great reaction. What makes this very compelling to me is that it is so relatable like they got so much done with a good attitude and limited language skills. Like almost anyone could do this. Personally i would do a bit less driving and more checking out places in the rural areas and more eating in local places rather than in konbini, but anyway loved it !
The boys are flying to China right now. Are you planning on watching?
Can't wait for the China reactions! These were so much fun to watch along again and your perspective was so cool to see! Thanks for the reactions!
Ludwig released a video where him and Michael watch the series after the trip and give their thoughts and some behind the scenes stuff from the trip. Might be fun for you to watch if you haven't already.
For the sarcasm, I think it’s funny because it can make a serious, awkward, or obvious situation into a joke instead of talking about it seriously.
Like if someone actually listed everything they miss, like their girlfriend or the familiarity of life, it could bring the mood down. But by exaggerating it in the opposite way, the listener still understands the real feelings while feeling amused at the silly exaggeration. That way the topic stays light and fun instead of feeling heavy or sad.
I’m trying to understand humour in Japan compared to my own here in Canada, so I’m still learning too 😂
