This video follows a 2025 winter cycling trip along part of the historic Nakasendo, a major Edo-period inland route that once connected Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto through Japan’s mountains and post towns. The ride begins at Sakata Station (坂田駅) in Maibara, Shiga Prefecture, and traces the old route westward toward Sekigahara Station (関ヶ原駅) in Gifu Prefecture, passing through lightly traveled rural roads, small towns, and historic roadside scenery that still reflect the spirit of the Nakasendo. Along the way, you can sense the history of the route as you pedal through landscapes that once supported travelers and samurai on foot.
