The Perfect Matsuyama Introduction Ride – From City Streets to Mountain Peaks, this has it all.
Morning. Uh we’re in Japan now. Matsyama. We’re on a Heime Prefecture and we’re here for the fam tour, but arrive early. We’re going to do a bit of a adventure ourself. So, it’s been pretty cold here. Didn’t think it’s going to be this cold. Lucky I brought the jacket. So today is going to be about like a 120k or less than 2,000 m of elevations. It’s got the route from local bike shop. So we’ll see how we go. First the first 10k will be just getting out of the city. But look at that. Behind me is a Matsuyama Castle. The hotel is just located in front of the castle which is really good and convenient. Now it’s about 6:30 and the road’s really quiet. First thing first, breakfast at 7-Eleven. [Music] So far, I got the usual, which is the onigiri. back sandwich energy bar and coffee. We’re still around city. It’s not out yet, but the view started getting better. Not just buildings. Look at this. I’m just riding right next to the main road. It’s pretty busy. Just enjoying it and riding with the student going to school. Feels like we’re already outside the Machama City. We’re going to the next city. This is the type of view that you see in Japan where a lot of students just commuting to school by bike. We’re definitely outside the city and we’re going to start the first climb. It’s easy climb. 2.1K average gradient of 3%. It’s a gentle rolling. Yeah, it’s better for me to stay on the walk path. There’s so much left on the room on the main road and there’s a lot of trucks as well. So just to be safe. [Music] [Music] And we now arrive at the sea. We’re at the coastal, baby. [Music] Look at that. [Music] So far the coastal ride been really really great. so scenic. Wherever you see behind you, in front of you, the roads is fairly smooth. Kind of mix of a rough uh road like this to a smooth tarmac. Can’t complain really with this view. [Music] Now doing a bit of a detour. So we’re going to check out the famous Shimonetta station. It’s right close to the sea and apparently it looks like a movie from a Jibli studio. We’re going to check it out. [Music] [Music] That was interesting. It’s a beautiful place. Uh, now I know why it’s quite famous. It’s just located right across the sea. Well, not really really across, but Kushima station is closer to the sea to the sea compared to this one. But it’s beautiful. And now I’m joining I think the Kieran cycle or a fixy. Look at this. [Music] [Music] The coastal rides finished and we’re going inland. It’s a mountain now. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] We’re now stopping at Lawson for second breakfast. Uh cuz most of the shops still hadn’t opened yet this time around. So we’re going to have a a bit of a snack. So, beef bowl and a water. Got bought a couple of nigirus as well cuz it’s going to be couple more climbs coming. Let’s go. [Music] [Music] We’re now heading towards Ozu City, the city I can see now in front of me. Don’t think we’re going to stop, but [Music] [Music] We’re now at Ozu City. It’s not much to see apart from just buildings and everything like what the other city has. We’re already past Ozu City and going towards the next one. I reckon we’re going to go via mountains by the looks of it. Climbing time. I think I picked the right or the perfect day for it with the route. So, I’m getting tailwind more than halfway. Been so good. It’s really quiet. We gently climbing up. It’s one or 2%. You don’t really feel it, but because of the tailwind just kept getting pushed, which is perfect. [Music] We’re pretty close to the Ucho city. We probably going to stop for a bit to eat before continue on to the fun and back to Matyama. It’s beautiful here. Senza, we’re riding at the outskirt of the town. So, don’t think there will be any restaurant as we go inside. So, we’re just going to continue on. I got onigiri and the the gel’s ready anyway. So, let’s go. All right. Now, it turns out found a cafe just before the kumak, which is where the climb’s going to be. So, it’s really convenient. Make an easy decision to actually stop for a bit of a coffee and food. Let’s go. We’re officially in a mountain now. And that was a good little stop before. Bit of a crepes and bit of coffee and orange juice. Enough to keep me going for another what back to Matyama again which is another 60k. So there will be climb coming like a proper climb or segment of 8 km in about 10 km from now. Let’s go. So far I’ve gone through about three tunnels and this is going to be the fourth one. Mountains. Mountains everywhere. All right, here we go. 8 km segment of a climb to the top to Kumaken City. So far, there’s a lot of green and yellow and bit of red. We’ll see how bad it’s going to be. first one kilometers just hovering between three four five six% and kept on going really I think from the profile potentially going to be it’s about 5 6 7% anyway it’s about 8k but bit of a red at the end we’re still climbing halfway and so far the profile is nothing above six So hovering about five four five six 56 again. So it’s it’s enjoyable really. But you can definitely use this for an FTP test cuz you got like consistent gradient. So yeah, halfway halfway done and another 4K to go. The scenery changed to a forest road which just beautiful. A lot of shades makes it really cool and pleasant. So going to keep on going. But another 3 km to go. There you go. Last 500 m of the climb. Bit of red. I don’t know. Sometimes red is just going to be about like 8%. So we we’ll see how we go. But so far it’s really constant. Reminds me of Springbrook Gold Coast but less steeper. It’s just it’s on and on like four five six%. You can take it really easy or we can just hit it. So far really pleasant really really quiet place. It’s amazing place, right? Go to waste. Finishing the climb with a tunnel like 700 m of a length. Going to be descend from here before starting the next climb again. Word. I know. Word. Word. You are the Lord. You are the Lord. You are the Lord. You are the Lord. You are the Lord. Heat. Heat. We’re about 120 plus and 30 km back to the city again where we started. It’s only one more segment of a climb. It’s about 5 km before we descending down to the city. bit more. We just passed Kumaken City. It’s going to be climbing now for 5 km before we’re descending all the way to city. Now, it’s the last 500 m of today’s climb before we all descending. It’s it’s different than the last climb cuz you you start in the city of Kuma Kogan. It’s fairly busy. There’s road work, but the remaining climb is pretty quiet as you can see. Mostly nothing above 6%. So, it’s hovering between 3 to 5, which is good. So yeah, almost there and we’re descending. It’s about 20 km. Looks like we’re descending, baby. Oh w Oh [Applause] wow. Wow. Oh, oh h oh. Oh wo wo. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Stopping in the middle of the sand just to see how beautiful the road is. Look at this. That’s city. We’re going that way. [Music] [Music] Let’s go. [Music] [Applause] [Music] We’re now back to the city and so about 3 kilometers left back to the hotel. It’s been a amazing day. Testing out a new local recommended loop. I was sold by a bike shop. Let’s give it a go. I’m looking for like a 100k ride and didn’t disappoint at all. It’s been really amazing. Now I just try to find a public on sand to recover for tomorrow. [Music]

Japan is awesome. A thing I was surprised with is how unmanicured it is. Not a lot of attention is given to keeping anything by the road neat and tidy. But the riding is sensational. Jealous, but thanks for taking us along on the ride. Vintage cycling is big in Japan. Not surprised to see steelies on the road.
