Everything I eat to cycle across Japan! 🍜🇯🇵

This is how much I have to eat in a day to cycle across Japan. On the agenda for today, we’ve only got a pretty short 31m ride from Kitakata to our next ramen city, Yonazawa. In this neck of the woods, there’s a deep tradition of asada or morning ramen. So, before heading out, I had to grab one final bowl of Kitakata’s local variety. This ramen is super light and has a gentle soy sauce-based broth, and its noodles are a little bit flatter and craggly with a nice and bouncy chew. I also snagged a little tuna mayo rice bowl which was nice and creamy with a little bit of umami from the seaweed. As I got rolling, I was making my push out of kitakata. But when I spotted this little peanut hut, not stopping was simply not an option. All the dishes they offer use their locally grown Isizu peanuts. So, I grabbed this peanut soft serve topped with peanuts that had even more peanuts integrated throughout, which gave the cone a super earthy and nutty taste. The ride from here on out is basically one straight shot through the mountains with a pretty bananas amount of tunnels before descending into some farmland and eventually this little frog themed curry house for some luck. This was definitely kind of a local type of spot with pretty healthy portions. And when I received my meal, I found that the chef planted a little flag on that boy to make sure all the other customers knew that there was indeed a large person in the house. The curry was loaded up with tons of different toppings like tonkatu, karag, fried shrimp, sausages, and more, and came with a little rice mountain as well. The curry itself was pretty healthily seasoned with a nice little bit of spiciness and wasn’t too sweet. And overall had the perfect amount of viscosity. Then I bounced over to my pretty old school hotel that ran me 50 bucks a night and then took a quick walk to this spot selling Yoshiaki, which fun fact is named after one of the most famous samurai commanders in Japanese history who was forced into hiding after the game war of the 1180s. And while he was on the run, he and his followers were said to have eaten sheep to survive. And that’s how this lamb barbecue set got its name. Here you grill all your own meat and fry up some veggies in the fat drippings and is traditionally eaten with this special tangy miso sauce to help remove some of the giness. Then I got this frozen berry pecarino log which is pretty cheese forward with a little bit of sour and a little bit of sweet. See you guys tomorrow.

This is everything I eat in a day on my bikepacking trip across Japan! Today, we travelled from Kitakata to Yonezawa!
