Toyama Prefecture Kaikatsu CLUB Uozu Branch Morning of Day 3 of the Hokuriku Touring Today we head from Itoigawa to Hakuba and Shiga Kogen A special day to conclude this journey Departing from Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture Departing from Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture Proceeding along National Route 8 toward Benten Rock in Itoigawa Then taking National Route 148 to enjoy the Shirasawa Tunnel in Hakuba Village From Kinasa, Nagano Prefecture, we take Prefectural Route 36 towards Togakushi. Passing the Omoto Pass Observatory, we descend from Shinano Town to Nakano City. We race up National Route 292, the Shiga-Kusatsu Highlands Route. Visiting Yokoteyama Drive-In and Kemonotoge Pass, we head to Tsumagoi Village. From Tsumagoi Village, we return via regular roads to Ibaraki Prefecture. This route tours famous spots in Toyama, Niigata, Nagano, and Gunma. Toyama Prefecture: Nyuzen Kurobe Bypass, Kurobe City, Inuyama Entering Kurobe City, a vast plain stretches out. The Tateyama Mountain Range can be seen in the distance. The expansive terrain and mountain ridges are beautiful. Toyama Prefecture: National Route 8, Asahi Town, Shinkogawa Bridge Entered Asahi Town. The surrounding mountain ridges draw much closer. Toyama Prefecture, National Route 8, Asahi Town, Shiroyama Tunnel Entering the Shiroyama Tunnel in Asahi Town. This is the main route cutting through the foothills of the Northern Alps. Toyama Prefecture, National Route 8, Asahi Town, Sakai Bridge CCTV This is the Sakai Bridge connecting Toyama and Niigata Prefectures. Crossing the bridge enters Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Ichiburi Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Jodo Snow jets line the coast. Snow jets along the coast are rare. Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Near Oyashirazu Station This is the point where the Hokuriku Expressway and National Route 8 intersect. The Sea of Japan spreads out on the left, giving the feeling of driving over the sea. Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Aomi The refreshing views of the Sea of Japan continue Ahead, we enter the urban area of Itoigawa City Niigata Prefecture, Itoigawa East Bypass, Kaikawa Viaduct Driving on the Itoigawa East Bypass Kaikawa Viaduct The cityscape of Itoigawa spreads out from the elevated road Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Onifuse We’ve returned to the road along the Sea of Japan The national highway section continues, sandwiched between sea and mountains Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Benten Ohashi Bridge Benten Rock appears offshore. We stop at Benten Rock. Niigata Prefecture, Benten Rock This is Akebono Bridge spanning Benten Rock. Its distinctive feature is the red railing evoking a traditional Japanese feel. It’s a popular spot with an attached beach. The reefs are clearly visible in the crystal-clear water. We climb the stairs along the rock face. Reaching the summit, the stairs were quite steep. A panoramic view of the Sea of Japan and Itoigawa’s cityscape unfolds. At the top, a red torii gate and a white lighthouse stand side by side. A small shrine dedicated to the sea god is built here. This is a breathtaking viewpoint in Itoigawa that captivates visitors. The sight of the rugged reefs and the sea leaves a lasting impression. Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Onifuse Leaving Benten Rock behind, we head back to National Route 8 Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Yamato River We’ve returned to the city center of Itoigawa City A town known as a source of jade Niigata Prefecture, National Route 8, Itoigawa City, Hiraushi Leaving the Sea of Japan behind, we head inland The scenery shifts to mountain valleys. Niigata Prefecture, National Route 148, Itoigawa City, Negoya We entered National Route 148. The mountains of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range appear in the distance. Lush green scenery continues along the Himekawa River. Niigata Prefecture, National Route 148, Itoigawa City, Kotaki This section features tunnels and snow jets in succession. The road was carved through rugged terrain. Niigata Prefecture, National Route 148, Itoigawa City, Ōtokoro After about 10 minutes of driving, a tunnel section continues. This is characteristic of National Route 148 as it passes through the mountains. Ahead, we enter Otari Village, Nagano Prefecture. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 148, Otari Village, Yubara Tunnel Nagano Prefecture, National Route 148, Otari Village, Otari Onsen Exit This is the Otari Onsen area, boasting a 400-year history since its discovery. Deep mountain terrain means tunnels continue. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 148, Hakuba Village, Kitajo Passing through the tunnel section, we entered Hakuba Village. The road continues along the Himekawa River. This section is enveloped by the murmur of the river and lush greenery. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 148, Hakuba Village, near Iwatake The Northern Alps appeared ahead. Even shrouded in clouds, their presence is overwhelming. You can’t help but be captivated by their power. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 406, Hakuba Village, Kitashiro After about 7 minutes driving, the Northern Alps draw nearer. Hakuba Village’s scenery truly is exceptional. The magnificent view made me stop involuntarily. This is the summer landscape of the Northern Alps, different from winter. The mountainsides are dyed green, displaying a distinctly summery scenery. Even with clouds, it remains imposing. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 406, Hakuba Village, along the Himekawa River Heading toward Shirasawa Tunnel with the Northern Alps behind us Entering the uphill mountain pass road Nagano Prefecture, National Route 406, Hakuba Village, Kitashiro The altitude rises, and the temperature is just right at 27°C A mountain pass road where you can feel coolness even in summer Nagano Prefecture, National Route 406, Hakuba Village, Jinjo The winding uphill road continues Racing up the mountain valley enveloped in green Nagano Prefecture, Shirasawa Tunnel (Shirazawa Pass Observation Deck) We arrive at Shirazawa Tunnel. This observation deck offers panoramic views of the Northern Alps. A breathtaking vista from the pass at approximately 1,100m elevation. Surrounded by greenery in summer, it transforms into a snowy landscape in winter. Mountains including the Hakuba Sanzan range are visible in the distance. A popular scenic spot among photographers. The green-covered mountainsides appear vividly. Just four months ago, it was a winter scene blanketed in snow. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 406, Ogawa Village, Setogawa Leaving Shirasawa Tunnel, we re-enter the mountain pass road. The road continues through the mountain valley. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 406, Nagano City, Kinamari We have entered the Kinamari district of Nagano City. This historic area is known for legends of the Heike clan’s fugitives. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Route 36, Nagano City, Kinamari, Ichinose Entering Prefectural Route 36, the uphill slope steepens. Settlements dot the roadside, creating a tranquil landscape. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Route 36, Near Ubusuna Shrine The steep uphill climb continues. We ascend the slope surrounded by trees. We stop at another spot offering spectacular views of the Northern Alps. Arrival at the Daibo Pass Observation Deck. Nagano Prefecture, Daibo Pass Observation Deck This is the valley where the Heike clan is said to have hidden. Thick clouds obscure the Northern Alps mountain range. Greenery spreads across the valley floor, creating a tranquil scene. An information board for the Nishidake Range stands at the observatory. It’s a quiet spot, perfect for a touring break. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Route 36, Nagano City, Togakushi Leaving the Ōbo Pass Observatory, we enter the Togakushi area. The steep uphill climb continues. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Route 36, Near Togakushi Shrine We entered the temple town surrounding Togakushi Shrine. The street is lined with souvenir shops and eateries. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Route 36, Shinano-machi, Kashiwabara Leaving Togakushi Shrine behind, we entered Shinano-machi. The surrounding greenery grows denser. It’s a tranquil, mountain village-like landscape. Nagano Prefecture Route 36, Shinano-machi, Kurohime We entered the urban area of Shinano-machi. This is a tourist destination known for Kurohime Highlands and Lake Nojiri. Nagano Prefecture Route 36, Shinano-machi, Komaru A landscape where nature and human life harmonize. We drove through peaceful scenery. Nagano Prefecture Route 96, Nakano City, Nagae We entered Nakano City and stopped for a break since it was lunchtime. When in Nagano, savor soba noodles. Nagano Prefecture, Wakui Senta I chose the regular-sized zaru soba and small tempura. The crispy tempura complements the soba perfectly. The country-style soba has a rich aroma. Even the regular size is a surprising 500g. It offers a satisfying chew and spreads its flavor. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Route 96, Nagae, Nakano City Finished lunch and set off. Aiming for Route 292, Japan’s highest elevation road ahead. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Route 500, Kasakura-Kakita Bridge, Nakano City Kasakura-Kakita Bridge is a large bridge spanning the Chikuma River. It’s a vital route supporting Nakano City’s traffic. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 292, Ipponmaki, Nakano City Entered National Route 292 Mountains spread out before us Nagano Prefecture, National Route 292, Yamanouchi Town, Sano Entered Yamanouchi Town This is the entrance to the Shiga-Kusatsu Highlands Route Nagano Prefecture, National Route 292, Yamanouchi Town, Juunizawa Bridge Driving through Shiga Highlands, Juunizawa Bridge The scenery shifts to mountains, with an uphill mountain pass road continuing Nagano Prefecture, National Route 292, Near Biwa Pond Ski resorts and hotels are scattered throughout Shiga Highlands. It’s a mountain resort where you can enjoy all four seasons. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 292, Near Yokoteyama Sky Lift This is a ski area at an elevation of about 2,000 meters. The steep uphill climb continues, and the temperature drops sharply. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 292, Yamanouchi Town, Heiwa The uphill climb continues for about 6 minutes. As the elevation rises, the views become spectacular. Nagano Prefecture, Yokoteyama Drive-In We have arrived at Yokoteyama Drive-In. It is Japan’s highest-elevation drive-in. Yokoteyama stands at an elevation of approximately 2,100m. You can see the road winding through the mountains. Beautifully layered ridgelines stretch far into the distance. Impressive mountain faces loom close. A majestic view of mountains spreading out from between the clouds. It also features Japan’s longest Sky Lator. Nagano Prefecture, National Route 292, Yamanouchi Town, Heion Departing after leaving Yokoteyama Drive-In. A pleasant mountain road. Shibutoge Hotel stands at the border between Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. After passing the hotel, you enter Nakanojo Town, Gunma Prefecture. Gunma Prefecture, National Route 292, Nakanojo Town, Shibutoge Hotel Gunma Prefecture, National Route 292, Near the Central Watershed Monument A mountain road with sweeping, magnificent scenery Overwhelmed by ridgelines stretching as far as the eye can see A refreshing view typical of high altitudes Gunma Prefecture, National Route 292, Tsumagoi Village, Hoshimata Entered Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture From here, we head toward Kemonotoge Pass from the Manza area Gunma Prefecture Prefectural Route 466 Manza Onsen Entered the Manza area at an elevation of about 1,800m It has the highest sulfur content in Japan, and the smell of hot springs drifts through the air Gunma Prefecture Prefectural Route 466 Tsumagoi Village Hoshimata Leaving the Manza area behind, heading toward Kemonotoge Pass The temperature dropped to 19°C, becoming chilly Nagano Prefecture Prefectural Route 112 Takayama Village Maki We entered Prefectural Route 112. It’s a single road all the way to Kemonotoge Pass. Nagano Prefecture Prefectural Route 112 Near Gohan Falls The road narrows and has rough sections. The view is excellent, offering spectacular scenery. Nagano Prefecture Kemonotoge Pass We arrived at Kemonotoge Pass. Caution is needed as the road surface is unpaved. A sign indicating Gunma Prefecture stands in the distance. A town called Gunma once stood at this prefectural border. The Gunma Prefecture sign was renewed this year. The sign has a vintage-style finish. It is the new symbol of Gunma Prefecture. Compared to before, the entire area has been renewed. Suddenly, fog rolls in, enveloping the view in white. Nagano Prefecture, Prefectural Road 112, Near Gohan Falls Kemonotoge Pass is a dead end, so we turn back the way we came. The thick fog creates a fantastical atmosphere. Gunma Prefecture, Prefectural Road 466, Tsumagoi Village, Hoshimata Entered Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture. The fog from Kemonotoge Pass continues. Gunma Prefecture, Manza Highway, Tsumagoi Village, Hoshimata The road towards Kusatsu Town was closed this day, so we used the Manza Highway. Gunma Prefecture, Asama-Shirane-Shiga Sawayaka Road, Tsumagoi Village Cabbage fields stretch out as far as the eye can see. Tsumagoi Village is Japan’s top cabbage-producing region. Gunma Prefecture, National Route 406, Naganohara Town, Naganohara Entering Naganohara, the sky turns crimson. Even before 7 PM in August, it’s still bright. Gunma Prefecture, National Route 17, Maebashi City, Taguchi Town The surroundings darken, transforming into a night scene. The night view from National Route 17 is beautiful. 2025年8月の2泊3日北陸ツーリング、最終日です。
富山県魚津市を出発し、糸魚川を経由して白馬・志賀草津高原ルートを目指しました。

姫川沿いを走り抜け、北アルプスを望む「白沢洞門」では夏の白馬らしい絶景を堪能。
その後は鬼無里~戸隠を抜けて大望峠へ立ち寄り、静かな山あいの景色に癒やされました。

ツーリング後半は国道292号線を駆け上がり、標高2,100mの「横手山ドライブイン」へ。
さらに県境の「渋峠ホテル」、そして荒涼とした景観が広がる「毛無峠」へと走り抜けます。

標高2,000m級の爽快なワインディングと、霧に包まれる幻想的な景色。
まさに天空の絶景ロードと呼ぶにふさわしいルートでした。

夕方には群馬・嬬恋村を経由し、万座ハイウェーから一面のキャベツ畑へ。
最後は茨城県古河市まで走り抜け、充実の2泊3日旅を締めくくりました。

気温は朝27℃から高地では19℃まで下がり、夏と高原の両方を体感できる一日となりました。

    こちらは関東ド内陸住みなのですが初めて新潟の海を目指して下道17号から湯沢や十日町を通って うみてらす名立に行って来ました 5時間かかりました🚗
    白馬や志賀高原経由も考えたのですが 17号ルートにしたので参考になります🙋

  3. 初めてコメントします。いつも色々な景色、風景、状況?(色とか空気感というか・・)を見せていただきありがとうございます。行ったことがあっても知らなかった場所がたくさんあって、また行ってみたくなります。次のツーリングの参考にさせてもらいます!
    ところですみませんどうしても気になるのですが「スノーシェッド」ではないでしょうか(笑)。失礼ながら自分が解ってないだけかも・・。

  4. 石川県民ですが、かなり前に車で走った記憶しかないので今度是非バイクで同じルートに挑戦したいです。何とか一泊二日で帰るコースを検討してみます。それより最後に見せて頂いたバイクのインナーガレージがめちゃめちゃ羨ましいです。宝くじ当たったら改築したいと妄想中です(笑)。
