【八丈島】1日で島をぐるっと一周!!🚴海と山の絶景サイクリング
This is a video of a road bike ride around Hachijojima. The climbs are intriguing! The slopes of Noboryu Pass and the Sueyoshi area really work on your legs. The island’s perimeter road is about 50km long, but there are sections where you suddenly climb from sea level, making it a fun leg-strength challenge. The west side is dominated by sheer cliffs and rocky coastlines, while the east side is primarily home to coves, fishing ports, and settlements. The landscape changes dramatically from north to south on the island. This is a course that never gets boring. The Hachijojima Circumnavigation Ride offers all the benefits: the luxury of riding while enjoying ocean views, compact mountain stages, and island culture. Such rich scenery and experiences are packed into a distance of around 50km, making for a truly enjoyable cycling experience. After the ride, If you’re lucky, I recommend taking a dip in the ocean! Leaving Sokodo Port!!🚴 The two-story building is the Hachijojima Sokodo Port Tourist Information Center. The air conditioning is working well, and the restrooms are clean!✨️ Great weather!🌞 Tokai Kisen’s Tachibana Maru arrived at Sokodo Port at 8:55 AM as scheduled. After changing clothes and having breakfast (including the rice balls I brought with me), I set off on my ride. My first ride to Hachijojima is so exciting! [Hachijojima] One of the Izu Islands belonging to Tokyo, it is located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 287 km south of Honshu. A volcanic island, with two mountains towering in its center, Hachijo Fuji (West Mountain) and Miharayama (East Mountain), it is characterized by its abundant nature and warm climate. Location: Hachijo-machi, Tokyo
Area: Approximately 69 km², population: approximately 7,000 The climate is warm year-round (due to the influence of the Kuroshio Current), with relatively mild winters. The main industries are tourism, fishing, and agriculture (kusaya, angelica, passion fruit, etc.). There are two ways to access the area: by regular ferry from Tokyo’s Takeshiba Pier (approximately 10.5 hours) or by flight from Haneda Airport (approximately 55 minutes). Major tourist attractions include Hachijo-Fuji, Sokodo Port, Minamihara Senjojiki, hot springs, and diving spots. A sudden climb! This hill climb course ascends from Sokodo Port toward the center of the island, aiming for Noboryu Pass! The average gradient is around 4-6% (with a slightly steep section in the middle), the road is well paved, and there’s little traffic. This route begins its climb immediately from the port, making it easy to tackle even after arriving on Hachijojima. Its appeal lies in the sense of accomplishment and breathtaking views in a short time. This pass offers magnificent views typical of Hachijojima. The course begins with a gentle gradient from the port, then gradually increases in intensity, curving like a dragon ascending to heaven. This is said to be the origin of the name “Toryu” (climbing dragon). As you travel along the mountain pass, the east coast of Hachijojima unfolds behind you, and gradually the view of Sokodo Port and the sparkling blue Pacific Ocean comes into view. On a clear day, the blues of the sea and sky blend together, and the view stretches to the horizon. The area around the pass is a quiet space surrounded by trees, filled with the sounds of the wind and birdsong, creating a relaxing atmosphere despite being a tourist destination. This pass embodies the unique contrast between the sea and mountains of Hachijojima, and the fact that you can enjoy a spectacular view in such a short distance captivates visitors. It refers to the highly transparent, deep blue waters created by the influence of the Kuroshio Current. The Kuroshio Current keeps the water warm, making visibility 20-30m. Depending on the angle of the sunlight and the depth of the ocean, the waters show a variety of shades of blue, from ultramarine to cobalt blue. The curve continues.
