Pang Bo Welcome everyone to Pang Bo’s Tongyi Spring Breeze ‘Comedy King Stand-up Season’ Season 2. Pang Bo divided into six groups. Pang Bo initiates unlimited call outs. Find a man and have a baby, then your hormones will stabilize. I said what’s the use of stable hormones when my whole life is unstable. I don’t want to work in sales, I feel like all these years of education were wasted. I really feel like I can’t take off this scholarly robe. But I also know there’s nothing underneath it. It seems to me that stand-up comedy in the past couple of years has been all about female comedians getting on stage, while male comedians are just getting into bed. It wasn’t until the year before last that I realized my birthday is April 8th. Because on April 8, 2023, I signed a contract to become a stand-up comedian. On April 8, 2024, I left with my two daughters and nothing else and got my divorce certificate. I think Yang Tianzhen, Yang Tianzhen, you represent us Chinese women. Yang Tianzhen, we are always fighting for ourselves to live toward the sun. Director Fang really performs at a finals-level standard. Wang Yue is too powerful. Next is the Boss Challenge segment. Pang Bo A round of applause for Fu Hang. I’ve known since I was little that as long as I haven’t given an answer, no one can judge whether I’m right or wrong. Just like my life. Challenge Fu Hang. Pang Bo Please stand up. Before dinner, my uncle personally came over to ask me, which table are you sitting at? Actually, I can fly. Flying Bat Ke Zhen’e. That would be me. There’s a fire! I sat down right on it, and my colleague came with a fire extinguisher. Where’s the fire? I said, the fire is in my crotch. (Champion) Congratulations to Hip-hop Pang Bo for completing the challenge successfully. Everyone has come with fierce determination this year, and Pang Bo’s competitions will be even more intense. Stay tuned for more excitement in the second half. Pang Bo, please welcome with applause our atmosphere coordinator, Pang Bo, Da Peng. (Handsome) (So handsome) Hello everyone, I’m Da Peng. Could you repeat those adjectives you just used? (So handsome) Where did you find these audience members? I know you’re all wondering what Da Peng is doing here. A director. We don’t want to see him promoting his new movie. What we want to see is Fu Hang and Liu Cheng. What a coincidence, they’re both in my new film ‘The Lychees of Chang’an’ they’re both in it. I’m not saying this to use them for promotion. If I wanted promotion, I would’ve gotten Andy Lau and Yang Mi instead. Coincidentally, they’re in it too. And Stephen Chow too. His comedic spirit is with us. I really admire Stephen Chow. 10 years ago when I made my first film, I wanted to invite him for a cameo. I took my script for ‘Pancake Man’ to Hong Kong, and I asked Stephen if he could be in my movie. Stephen said, ‘Da Peng, wait a minute. I also have a script called ‘The Mermaid.’ He asked me what I thought about it. I thought he wanted me to act in it. I stayed with Stephen talking for 6 days. Stephen said, ‘Da Peng, you have to leave now.’ I said, ‘What’s wrong, Stephen, is there something you’re not satisfied with?’ Stephen said, ‘Da Peng, if you don’t leave soon, your Hong Kong travel permit will expire.’ So I quickly asked him, I said, ‘Stephen, which role do you want me to play, the beauty or the fish?’ This time Stephen didn’t call me Da Peng. He fell silent. I understood then. Stephen actually never intended for me to act. He wanted me to direct. In the end, he was too embarrassed to say it. The ‘Pancake Man’ didn’t make a cameo either. But I always remembered that we were supposed to work together. So as soon as I received the invitation for this show, I came right away. I don’t want to wait anymore. I’m unilaterally declaring that this show is my first collaboration with Stephen Chow. (Good) Whatever happens, happens. (Good) We’ve collaborated, Stephen, we’ve collaborated. I really like this show that Stephen and I are working on together. I know all the contestants. Once when I was shopping at the mall, I even ran into Da Lao Wang. Although we were both wearing masks at the time, I recognized those teary eyes of his. I said, “Are you Da Lao Wang? I’m a celebrity too.” Da Lao Wang said at that time, “That word ‘too’ makes me very happy, even though I don’t know who you are. But we can add each other on WeChat.” I said, “Great! Then next time when you have show tickets, remember to save two for Fu Hang for me.” Yes. Fu Hang is really famous. When I say this, I don’t mean that Da Lao Wang isn’t famous. That’s not what I meant. Later, through Da Lao Wang’s WeChat introduction, Fu Hang, Liu Yang, Liu Rencheng, they all ended up acting in my new movie. Some people wonder if they’ll get cocky after becoming famous. I can’t say whether they’re cocky or not, but anyway, once on the film set… The audience saw the actors. The audience was very enthusiastic, shouting “King Liu!” Liu Yang and Liu Rencheng both stood up at the same time to wave, completely blocking Andy Lau behind them. You’ve all seen this situation now, recording until today, the two “King Lius” have gone over there. The movie is about to be released, and I’d like to give a heads-up to the three brothers who participated, just to prepare you. Actually, in the final cut, each of your scenes has been trimmed a bit. (A bit) The thing is, they only filmed a bit to begin with. But as a director, you often encounter situations like this: the film turns out great, but you have limited runtime, and at this point, do you cut Andy Lau’s scenes or do you cut Fu Hang’s scenes? (Andy Lau) I believe every director would cut Liu Rencheng’s scenes. I knew it. Just kidding. Everyone still appears in the film and you can see them, if your eyesight is good enough. They were very committed during filming. Fu Hang plays the role of a security guard at a lychee orchard in Lingnan. Some soldiers come to cut down the lychee trees, and Fu Hang refuses to accept it, saying he’ll defend them to the death because he has a deep emotional connection with the trees. Later, he even requested to add a fight scene, saying otherwise his character wouldn’t be complete. If you’re wondering how intense the fight was, well, that scene turned out to be Fu Hang’s final shot in the movie. The character was complete, alright. Indeed. After the fight, I said: “That was great, should we do one more take?” Fu Hang: “That’s enough. Have mercy, boss! Green roasted tea.” I quickly consoled him, saying, “Although your screen time isn’t much, when you go back, you can tell your family and friends that with all the stars in this movie, we’re featuring one Fu Hang.” I can testify his acting is extremely resilient to punches. I’m really not here to promote our movie. I’ve always believed that making people happy is something truly remarkable, so I’m here to cheer for all you remarkable people. Big Wang! Yes? Keep it up, okay? Although you didn’t get a role in my new film, Stephen Chow didn’t either. In my heart, you’re just like Stephen Chow. Thank you everyone, I’m Da Peng. Thank you, Director Da Peng. Pang Bo will present a stand-up comedy performance. Pang Bo, please take your seat. Da Peng. Nervous. Once again, welcome Pang Bo, our atmosphere team and all team leaders. Pang Bo, welcome Sister Tianzhen. Hello, Yang Tianzhen. Welcome Pang Bo and Dalin. And welcome back Director Dapeng. Pang Bo. Unified Spring Breeze Sugar-free Tea, one sip of Spring Breeze Tea is full of aroma. Director Dapeng is Pang Bo. Pang Bo, it’s been a while since you did stand-up comedy, right? Dapeng. Yes, that’s right. Pang Bo, how does it feel to be back on stage again? Pang Bo. My legs started shaking Dapeng. from the moment I got up there, but the audience was really great. Dapeng. I hadn’t even started talking and they were already laughing. Dapeng. Dapeng, so that gave me a lot of confidence. Later when I started talking, Dapeng. gradually they stopped laughing. Pang Bo, we were just counting downstairs how many people participated in your movie. Pang Bo, it seems you value Da Laowang the most. Pang Bo. Right? Da Laowang’s trust in Director Dapeng Pang Bo. and this responsibility he entrusted to you. Pang Bo. Do you have anything to say about this responsibility? Pang Bo. No crying, okay? Pang Bo. Good luck to everyone, especially our friends competing in the second half. Pang Bo. Let’s all do our best, okay? Okay. Pang Bo. The first half of the competition Pang Bo. was already very intense, and there was Pang Bo. also a boss challenge, which was really exciting. Pang Bo. Let me ask our atmosphere team leaders. Pang Bo. Pang Bo, what moments left the deepest impression on you? Yang Tianzhen. First of all, in the first half, I think I cried at Yang Tianzhen. the same level as last year’s finals. I think the first round is comparable to Yang Tianzhen’s performance and can match the excitement of Yang Tianzhen’s finals last year. Are you talking about your performance, Guo Qilin, or their performance? Their performance. Yang Tianzhen, I’m talking about how excited I felt. Pang Bo, the intensity of emotions, right? Yes. Yang Tianzhen, what about Dalin? Pang Bo, Guo Qilin, I was most impressed by Fu Hang. It’s Fu Hang. Guo Qilin, I’m talking about his attitude Guo Qilin, toward the competition. He’s always saying, Guo Qilin, he says I’m just Guo Qilin, a very ordinary small-time actor. And he really hopes that Guo Qilin, everyone is better than him. He has this kind of mindset. Guo Qilin, logically speaking, Guo Qilin won the championship last season, he should have retired with honor. Guo Qilin, he came back this season, and it’s not like Guo Qilin retired after just one year. Pang Bo, yes. Guo Qilin, he’s saying this person is so humble and steady, I really admire that. Guo Qilin, Pang Bo, and our new friends haven’t let down Fu Hang’s expectations. Pang Bo, Pang Bo, Fu Hang’s gold medal has been taken by Hip Hop, Pang Bo, our new friend this year. Pang Bo, Hip Hop is our first place winner in the first half. What about Director Dapeng? Pang Bo, Dapeng, I feel I need to reflect on myself, because you’ve been standing there. Dapeng, once you experience it, Dapeng, only then do you realize how amazing they are. Those performances that seemed Dapeng, so great, Dapeng, are now even greater in my heart. Pang Bo, indeed. Pang Bo, it was also a very exciting competition, if you look at the advancement seats, Pang Bo, you’ll find that from last year’s finals, our top ten, Pang Bo, six of them are competing again this year. Except for Yu Xiangyu who hasn’t performed yet and Pang Bo, the previous five contestants have all been sent to the waiting area by these friends already. Our waiting area is now shining with stars. Yang Tianzhen, can you see them? What happened? Zhai Jianing is gone, ran away. Tang Xiangyu, where are you running to? Tang Xiangyu, what are you doing? Liu Rencheng, Liu Yang, can’t see this. Chen Shu, he doesn’t know what’s wrong with Liu Rencheng, does he? Hei Deng, hello everyone. Hei Deng, this is Hei Deng, right? Pang Bo, back here we have Master Liu Yang, Liu Rencheng, Pang Bo – let me introduce them one by one. Hei Deng, except for Yu Xiangyu, everyone else is here. Hei Deng, Liu Yang, count off. Three. Hei Deng, Liu Rencheng, four. Five. Liu Yang, six. Tang Xiangyu, right, seven. Hei Deng, everyone’s here, Yu Xiangyu, hurry up and join us. Tang Xiangyu, Yu Xiangyu, I’m number eight. Yu Xiangyu, I won’t join them. Pang Bo, then let’s start our competition – the team battle. Pang Bo, the first half of episode two is now officially beginning. I hope our friends sitting opposite Pang Bo will perform well. Pang Bo And thank you to all our audience members here today. Pang Bo Just like in a theater, we’ll follow the usual rules. Pang Bo Laugh if you like it, vote if you enjoy it. Our opening performer for the first half Pang Bo has also worked very hard. And he is someone from Pang Bo overseas. He’s from Northeast China, Pang Bo but he lives in Singapore. Let’s give a warm welcome to Pang Bo A-Shui! Go for it! Pang Ying You can do it, Brother Shui! Dun’er Good luck! Hello everyone, I’m A-Shui. I’m a Chinese person living in Singapore. And my hometown is in Northeast China. So overseas, we don’t just have Chinese people, we also have ‘Hua-yin.’ Hua-yin. One of us. Chinese people in Singapore also watch Chinese variety shows, but not as regularly anymore. There might be some delay, many of our memes and popular phrases might already be outdated by the time they reach there. But we still love watching them because the quality is great and they’re entertaining. How should I put it, Aoligei, right? It describes something that’s super cool. Including stand-up comedy shows, I started watching them quite late. Let me put it this way, on overseas websites now, I can still see several Chinese stand-up comedy rising stars who are no longer visible in China. They’re now in their prime overseas. That’s why they say things are chaotic abroad. My life was also quite messy a few years ago. In terms of work, I was laid off overseas. Some foreign companies don’t give advance notice for layoffs. I was leaving work as usual that day. I saw HR suddenly working overtime. So I said, I’ll just head out then. Sure enough, early the next morning I received an email from the company CEO sent to the entire company, and the first sentence began… When I saw this, I knew they were getting serious. Right? I really could leave early, couldn’t I? I was fired that very day, let go on the spot. Let me tell you what kind of company it was, one of those foreign startups that claims to be global from day one. Global company. It’s not really that global, just a fancy website. They put a bunch of foreigners on display. Four people trying to represent seven different skin tones. Those people pretending to work on one computer, right? And the voiceover is so fitting. There’s… One computer is literally working together. I continued job hunting overseas at that time, it was exhausting. Having to deal with all kinds of HR people. You’ve just been kicked out of one company. Then you have to listen to new HR people promoting their corporate culture. In my mind, I’m thinking two words: bullshit, more bullshit. I was interviewing with one of our big domestic companies for their overseas division. I won’t name the company, but that HR person spoke with such style. It felt like every word had rhythm, really pulsating. That HR person said to me: If you join us, you’ll need to integrate into our culture, which is our culture. I asked, what kind of culture? They said our company’s employees need humility as their most important quality. Do you know what kind of people don’t talk like this? Humble people. Does your company care so much about being humble? Requiring people to be humble. If I join you, I can be extremely humble, right? The boss asks: Ashui, can you finish this by working overtime, is it possible? I’d say: How could I possibly have that ability? From now on, I’ll submit a humble resume. Can’t code, can’t speak English. The interviewer asks: Can you learn? I say: I can learn. I’m not saying HR work is bad, we’re all just working. What annoys me is how some companies have this pretentious attitude, where they’re hiring you but also trying to educate you. You don’t even know if they’re promoting their company or asking for donations. They come to you and say: Join us. What you’ll get is not just a job. It’s a journey. It’s a mission. And vision. It’s an experience. When you’re talking with HR you need to think big right? They’re always asking about what your five-year plan is. I went home thinking my labor contract is only for three years. Interviewing with HR is so exhausting because I never know what to say it’s tiring. I really wished I could be like people from Northeast China like my dad who at dinner tables is instantly familiar with everyone can handle any situation just pure confidence. Right? Usually when a lady picks up her glass she asks if any gentleman would like to say a few words My dad picks up his glass and says Hey miss, pick up your glass. Pick it up. In the glass there’s alcohol. I’ll drink mine, you do as you please. Let me tell you, I’m the kind of person who’s reliable. We should hang out sometime. If interviews were like that it would be like right now where nobody dares to speak. You might think this guy didn’t say much but you feel like he’s got something. If I showed this confidence during interviews if I were this confident in interviews who would dare look down on me? When HR picks up my resume. I’d say, no, no, no. Hey, HR lady pick up my resume. Pick it up. In the resume there’s already a brief summary of my experience. I wrote it. Whether you read it or not is up to you, right? Let me introduce you to people from Northeast China we Northeasterners are reliable. One of these days we should hang out right? If foreign HR doesn’t understand I’ll explain it to them. Reliable. Let’s hang out sometime. Thank you everyone I’m A-Shui. Thank you. Pang Bo thanks A-Shui for his performance. Audience members who enjoyed A-Shui’s performance Pang Bo please don’t forget to vote for him. Pang Bo. Pang Bo. Another round of applause for A-Shui. Although Pang Bo and A Shui are stepping onto Pang Bo’s Unified Spring Comedy King Stand-up Season stage for the first time, they delivered quite a solid performance. You can see Pang Bo was nodding his head the whole time. Pang Bo, Director Da Peng, you two sound like fellow townsmen, right? Pang Bo: Fellow townsmen, absolutely. Da Peng: I might know your father, had drinks with him before. A Shui: When Da Peng delivered his first punchline about overseas Chinese. Da Peng: Overseas, there are not only Chinese people, Da Peng: but also Chinese banks. I hit the buzzer right away. Da Peng: That’s so sweet, thank you, Brother Peng. A Shui: Why are you being shy now? Pang Bo: Brother Peng. A Shui: Last year I watched Brother Peng’s movie The Annual Meeting Cannot Stop. A Shui: Pang Bo, I thought Singapore just got Pancake Man. Pang Bo: And his performance really gives you a sense of time travel. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard Pang Bo: the word ‘hoodwink’ on a stand-up comedy stage. Pang Bo A Shui Yang Tianzhen: I see from your profile that you’re an AI algorithm engineer. Yes. A Shui: So stand-up comedy is your side gig? Yang Tianzhen: Stand-up is my side job. A Shui: Your main job is in the AI field. A Shui Yang Tianzhen: So how did you discover your talent for stand-up comedy? A few years ago during A Shui: the pandemic, I was in Singapore, A Shui: and I watched variety shows from back home, so I learned from them. A Shui Yang Tianzhen: Self-taught. Yes, self-taught by watching videos. A Shui Because it really gives you a sense of companionship. Shui. Actually, those foreign variety shows we watch. Shui. It’s really like Chinese variety shows with many actors that I like. Shui. Like Liu Yang, Zhou Qimo. Shui. And today, I came back with a bit of Shui. a fan mentality, meeting Liu Yang for the first time. Shui. Guo Qilin, do you think they just debuted right? Guo Qilin. Still stuck in that time period. Guo Qilin. Still there. Liu Yang. Rising star. Are any of you Liu Yang fans? Shui. (Yes) So you’ve watched their videos. Shui. Buddy. Shui. Let’s practice together. Shui. How about you do one set and I do one set? Shui. This is so similar. Tiantian. Even the voice sounds alike, you might as well drop out of the competition. He’s using AI. Liu Yang. Has he studied me? Pang Bo, I hope your fan obsession doesn’t lead you to Pang Bo’s waiting room, okay? But I think. Pang Bo. In his recent performance. Pang Bo. Actually, when he speaks. Pang Bo, I feel like I can see a little bit of Zhou Qimo’s Pang Bo. shadow in there. Now I want to present to everyone Pang Bo. a character you don’t know, Pang Bo. a scene you’re not familiar with, you can even choose one. Shui. I can imitate all of Zhou Qimo’s bits. Shui. Shui. Shui. Shui. Dalin, does it feel familiar after watching? Pang Bo. There’s a feeling, actually I was watching. Guo Qilin. Throughout the whole show, I’m guessing. Guo Qilin. Guo Qilin is actually quite an introverted person. Yes. Shui. You and Liu Yang. Guo Qilin. Liu Yang is genuine. Guo Qilin feels uncomfortable doing this. You’re imitating him. Guo Qilin. Hiding behind his persona. Guo Qilin still feels a sense of embarrassment doing these things. Guo Qilin. No, well. A-Shui. Introverts are like this. A-Shui. Introverts only express themselves very little in daily life. A-Shui. He only has those few minutes when he’s on stage. A-Shui. To show everyone what kind of person he is. A-Shui. Click another one. Stop clicking. Pang Bo. No, come on. A-Shui. The copyright of the original video. Pang Bo. Isn’t on our platform, this. Why does it feel like Pang Bo. we’re entering Oriental Scala? Okay, thanks. Pang Bo. Thank you for A-Shui’s performance. Pang Bo. Thanks. A-Shui has received Pang Bo. two votes from our atmosphere group. Pang Bo. Now we’re going to start the first challenge of the second half. Everyone. Pang Bo. Those who haven’t performed yet need to think whether to take the challenge. Pang Bo. Final countdown, 5 seconds. Teacher Zhen Yong. A-Shui. He’s a new face to me. When I first talked with him, A-Shui. I couldn’t understand what he was saying. This TV. A-Shui. Contact HR. A-Shui. I think A-Shui. he must be an incredibly talented person. And then, A-Shui. I’m quite looking forward to what he’ll say. Right? Zhen Yong. What’s this? I don’t know. I received an invitation for this show this year. Director. What was your first reaction? Zhen Yong. My first reaction was happiness. That feeling of time flying by. Zhen Yong. That sudden feeling of unreality. It’s truly brave, but that’s the day I’ve been dreaming of. It’s brave, but still a bit frightening. Honestly, the production team actually approached many people. I’ve always believed truly, that I could get on this show. Come on, just go for it! Honestly, we Hani people never give up. Wang Yue. Zhen Yong. (Zhen Yong) Hello everyone, I’m Zhen Yong, Zhen for genuine, Yong for brave. Thank you all. Well, it’s my first time on this stage, so let me briefly introduce myself. I’m from Yunnan, a young man from the borderlands. I bet you can see the ‘borderlands’ part, but not the ‘young man’ part? Well, besides my appearance, my most distinctive feature is actually my accent. Can everyone understand me? (Yes, we can) Right, my accent is quite strange, I can’t even speak standard Mandarin properly. To this day, my mom still doesn’t understand how with my Mandarin I can make money doing stand-up comedy. My mom has no idea what a difficult path I’ve chosen. Actually, with this accent, I could easily make money making phone calls. This accent of mine has also caused me a lot of trouble. My accent caused me the biggest problems when reciting classical Chinese texts in school. My teacher said my accented speech was harder to understand than classical Chinese. I remember once when reciting the ‘Yueyang Tower Essay.’ (Yueyang Tower Essay) I was reciting, saying, ‘It must be said, worry before the world worries, rejoice after the world rejoices.’ What was that? Unexpectedly, the teacher angrily said to me, ‘Zhen Yong, why don’t you try reciting it in your hometown dialect? At least that way we can be sure that Yueyang Tower is still in China.’ But the real reason for my accent is that I speak a minority language. I belong to an ethnic minority, and I was born in a multi-ethnic community. Let me tell you all, I was born in Yunnan Province, in a Miao, Miao-Yao-Dai Autonomous County. But living in a multi-ethnic area really makes us Hani people seem quite ordinary. Just listen to this: Miao people can cast spells – amazing! Dai people celebrate the Water Splashing Festival, which is very lively. I searched for ages, and the only promotional point for us Hani people is that we don’t leave the house on the first day of the Lunar New Year. What kind of ethnic custom is this? Then during the 2020 Spring Festival, the whole world became Hani people. But many people are very curious about our multi-ethnic regions. Someone once asked me, “Are there still ethnic groups living in tribes where you’re from?” Tribes? We changed that name long ago, we call them communities now. When we first changed it, some people even said they would send property managers to protect us. We said fine, we’ll protect these property managers. Some people are even more curious. Someone once came up to me and said, “Zhenyong, with so many ethnic minorities where you’re from, when you all went to elementary school together, wasn’t there cultural conflict between different ethnicities?” When I was in elementary school, we didn’t even have culture, so there was no culture, just conflict. And our conflicts couldn’t even get started because we couldn’t understand what the other side was saying. Besides being home to ethnic minorities, this is also our country’s frontier and border region. Let me tell you all just how frontier my birthplace is. In my hometown, there’s a piece of land where we grow bananas. On this side are bananas, and on that side are imported bananas. That’s how border it is. Even our country’s most famous frontier poet Wang Changling, to us, he’s an inland poet. The frontier where he was assigned, to reach my current hometown from there, he’d need to be exiled one more time. Some people are born in places where all roads lead to Rome. Where I was born, all paths lead to the Golden Triangle. But what I really can’t understand is, I live in Chengdu now, while my mom lives in our hometown, and she’s really worried that I might get trafficked to northern Myanmar from Chengdu. I said, “Mom, shouldn’t you be the one being careful?” I’m in Chengdu, over 1,000 kilometers from the border, while you’re at home just one kilometer from the border. But my mom is such an optimist. She told me, “Child, what do I have to worry about? I know the routes over there very well. If I get tricked into going there, I’ll just ride a motorcycle back.” So those people who got trafficked to northern Myanmar, they couldn’t escape because they don’t know how to ride motorcycles? And if motorcycles are so effective in northern Myanmar, society should give everyone at the Yunnan border a motorcycle each. Especially in our area, delivery riders should replace their electric bikes with motorcycles. When things are quiet, they can deliver food, and when needed, they can go rescue hostages. When we send our riders to attack them, right? The enemy sees us coming and reports to his superior saying, ‘Boss, boss’ ‘they’re attacking us’ ‘they’ve sent a regiment.’ What regiment? No idea, but they’re running and shouting ‘Hurry, catch it’ ‘it’s about to time out.’ And maybe because I was born in this hometown I’ve noticed whenever I come back home big data is biased against me, my phone’s big data is prejudiced against me. Because the foreign telecom news headlines I see are different from what you all see. What you guys see is ‘Foreign telecoms are scams’ ‘How dangerous Northern Myanmar compounds are’ but the headline they push to me is ‘Still scamming?’ That’s the consequence. Alright, that’s all for today, thank you all for your support, I’m Zhenyong, the frontier boy. Pang Bo: Thank you. Xiha: Zhenyong. Thank you. Pang Bo: Thanks for Zhenyong’s performance, audience friends who like him, Pang Bo: please don’t forget to vote for him. Pang Bo: Voting countdown. Pang Bo. Pang Bo. Another round of applause for Pang Bo and Zhenyong from Houyang Comedy, Pang Bo Zhenyong. Thank you. Zhenyong: Thank you everyone. Very brilliant. Pang Bo: Does this frontier boy’s whole demeanor Pang Bo: remind you of our riverside boy Dalin’s Pang Bo: memories? Pang Bo: I’m even missing Teacher Zhenyu. Guo Qilin: Last year we came back together. Guo Qilin: This year he went back again. Wu Zhenyu: Then you stay. Pang Bo: Quick, let his mother go rescue him. Zhenyong, don’t worry, my motorcycle is free for you to use. Zhenyong. Guo Qilin, you can just scan a code there and ride it back, right? Guo Qilin. That’s great. Guo Qilin, I know in Kunming they speak Mapu, right? Zhenyong. Mapu. Zhenyong, in our area it’s Hapu, because we’re Hani people. Guo Qilin, your region truly has a blend of many ethnicities. That’s what I’ve learned. Guo Qilin. It’s like New York, you know? It’s really vibrant there. Guo Qilin. And I think your Mandarin is actually Guo Qilin. quite standard, I’d say. Really? Zhenyong. Just because of how it sounds to us. Guo Qilin. Guo Qilin, there aren’t really many barriers to understanding. Right. Pang Bo. Because in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan areas. Guo Qilin. Guo Qilin, actually the Southwestern Mandarin there belongs to the northern language family. Guo Qilin. Yes, so everyone’s ability to understand is pretty good. Guo Qilin. And then combined with your natural geographical advantage, Guo Qilin, when you speak. Guo Qilin. I think people find it quite novel. Guo Qilin. And also. Guo Qilin, your performance is really quite entertaining. Thank you. Zhenyong. If ‘Tales of Bianshui’ has a second season. Zhenyong. You could recommend me then. You could play yourself. Zhenyong. I’ll play a local. Good. Guo Qilin. Yang Tianzhen, I think our newcomers this year are really impressive. Yang Tianzhen. And look, these two are both newcomers. Yang Tianzhen. And their styles are completely different, but the content. Yang Tianzhen. Yang Tianzhen, they’re topics and perspectives you’ve never heard before. Yang Tianzhen. You haven’t heard them either, I find it very fulfilling. Yang Tianzhen. I feel the competition is really intense. Yang Tianzhen. Yang Tianzhen, I’m not sure who’s winning between you two. Director Dapeng. Pang Bo. If only Dapeng. in my performance just now Dapeng, if I had added some of my own accent, you know, that characteristic I have, Dapeng. that vocal quality, it might have been even better. Dapeng. Pang Bo. He’s still learning. Dapeng, he made good use of his own Dapeng. linguistic abilities. It’s not about using it, it’s because I have no choice. Zhen Yong. Dapeng, we could all hear his performance clearly, not only did we hear it clearly, but it also resonated with us, it touched our hearts. Dapeng. It’s really amazing, really great. Welcome to my world of accents. Zhen Yong. I think it’s honey-like. Pang Bo. No, honey is gone. Why am I calling you such an intimate nickname? Pang Bo. I think. Honey. Zhen Yong. You were just yesterday… Guo Qilin. Guo Qilin called me darling, you know. I think what I admire most about Zhen Yong’s performance just now Pang Bo. is that everything he wanted us to understand Pang Bo. was perfectly clear. Yes. Guo Qilin. And what he didn’t want you to understand Pang Bo. wasn’t clear at all. Pang Bo. That’s really impressive. Right. Xiaolu. His language skills are very sophisticated. I’m also from Yunnan, Xiaolu. and Zhen Yong is from Yunnan too. Actually, I saw Zhen Yong’s performance Xiaolu. recently at an open mic in Shanghai, that’s where I heard him. Xiaolu. And the last time I laughed so hard at an open mic Xiaolu. that I made chicken noises was several years ago. Xiaolu. Watching Xu Zhisheng. So Zhen Yong is really unique. Xiaolu. And he’s actually a very typical example of someone Xiaolu, who came from truly difficult circumstances Xiaolu. and made it through. Their hometown Xiaolu. is the one from that show ‘X-Change’. The filming location is amazing. Yes, Xiaolu. Yes, it’s really amazing. Honestly, my little village is just across from Vietnam. Amazing. Even back then when I was little, when I was born, Amazing. there weren’t any roads, no electricity. Amazing. The only thing that worked was ventilation. But all of this, Amazing. couldn’t stop me from becoming the person I wanted to be. Amazing. Pangbo, how did you start doing stand-up comedy? Stand-up comedy is… Amazing. I used to perform in Kunming, because I… Amazing. I’m not really suited for phone calls. Amazing. I feel… Don’t stereotype us. Xiaolu. Pangbo, you really insisted on working in a language-related field? Pangbo. Right? Amazing. After doing stand-up in Kunming, after learning more about it, Amazing. I kept performing in Kunming, but the market there is very small. Amazing. Last year I had an opportunity when I saw Chengdu Houyang Comedy. Amazing. They posted about a competition, so I went to participate. Amazing. At that time I only had a few hundred Amazing. yuan left, but I still went to the competition. Amazing. Because my mom told me, I’ll give you one more year. Amazing. Amazing. If you don’t make it, just come back home. Amazing. Hip-hop. I really want to cry, I’m getting emotional. Wang Yue. Even though it’s so risky to go back. Amazing. So I came back. Amazing. That was my only bargaining chip, but after I went to compete in Chengdu, Amazing. I actually won first place. Hip-hop. Xiaolu. Xiaolu, Hip-hop, and him. Xiaolu, do you guys hang out together often? Yes, and also Zhenyong. Hip-hop. Wang Yue and I were really touched by what he said. Hip-hop. It’s because when we first saw him arrive. Hip-hop. He really Hip-hop. was just wearing a pair of flip-flops. Pang Bo. His clothes were all worn out. Xiaolu. On top. Hip-hop. Xiaolu. It was quite shocking. You’re so brave. Guo Qilin. Let me add some information. Wang Yue. Wang Yue means when Zhenyong came to that club to participate in the competition. Wang Yue. What touched me was that he came to rehearsal. Wang Yue. His feet were swollen. Wang Yue. And later when I asked him, he was too embarrassed to tell us. Wang Yue. He said he bought a standing ticket and stood all the way here because it was too far. Zhenyong. Because that train from Chengdu to Kunming. Zhenyong. That train is very slow, 17 hours, right? Xiaolu. Yes, but… Zhenyong. I was standing the whole time, and I thought to myself then. Zhenyong. I said in the future I must find my place in Chinese stand-up comedy. Zhenyong. Find my own seat ticket. Thank you. Pang Bo. Thank you for sharing your story with so many people. Pang Bo. Pang Bo, and thank you for bringing such a brilliant performance to this stage. Pang Bo. I think this feedback from the atmosphere group Pang Bo. is also what you deserve. You got 3 votes from the atmosphere group, Pang Bo. a full score. Pang Bo. Congratulations, Zhenyong. Now let’s invite Ashui and Pangbo back to center stage. How will the competition between Pangbo and his opponent turn out? One from the border region against one from overseas with good words. Judging from their performances alone, Wang Yue, I think they’re evenly matched, it’s hard to tell who’s better. Wang Yue. Pangbo, please look at the big screen. Pangbo. Congratulations to Zhenyong for winning. And congratulations to Ashui and Pangbo for getting 170 votes. Pangbo, that’s an excellent result. According to our rules, Pangbo and Ashui need to go to the waiting area for now. Pangbo, you’re meeting all your idols. Xiaolu. Chasing Stars, Brother. Now you’re sitting as equals. Guo Qilin, Liu Yang, Liu Rencheng. Ashui, who else is there? Pangbo, you haven’t seen last year’s finals, right? All the participants are there. Pangbo. Pangbo, if you have anything to say to everyone, please share a few words. Pangbo, everyone should go Ashui, when you travel to remote places, please support Zhenyong’s performances. Ashui, and then, Ashui, there are some even more remote places. Ashui, like Singapore, when you all go there, Ashui, you can also come to our shows. Hope to see everyone again in the future. Ashui, then I’ll go learn from Liu Yang. He really performed well. Qiqi, no problem. Qiqi, performed very well. Zhai Jianing. Ashui, come sit over here. Sit next to your idol. According to the rules, Pangbo, the challenge continues. Our friends sitting across from us. Pangbo, if anyone wants to challenge Zhenyong, Pangbo, if they want to issue a challenge, Pangbo, countdown for the last five seconds, no one is challenging. Pangbo, Zhenyong advances. Pangbo, please show his final score on the big screen. 188 votes. Pang Bo, congratulations to Zhenyong for advancing. Thank you everyone. Zhenyong, my Hani people will always love you. Congratulations, Pang Bo for getting your own seat ticket. Wang Yue, that’s great. I know him very well. Wang Yue, it was Zhenyong’s first competition after coming from Yunnan to Chengdu. Wang Yue, I was there at the venue. It’s actually quite moving to see an actor like Wang Yue who came from the mountains. Wang Yue, he has such simplicity. Wang Yue, such sincerity. I remember when I chose this career. Zhenyong, my mom was really against it. Zhenyong, I said, ‘Mom, give me two years.’ Zhenyong, I said if I still haven’t been noticed by people, I’ll do as you say. Zhenyong, later I was completely broke. Zhenyong, I thought to myself, I can’t just waste away in Kunming anymore. Zhenyong, I need to go out and make my way, and there happened to be a competition in Chengdu. Zhenyong, it was called Houyang Comedy. Zhenyong, the 4th National Newcomers Competition. Because I had no money then, Zhenyong, I bought the cheapest standing ticket. And I was determined to prove myself. Zhenyong, let’s welcome today’s champion with applause. Zhenyong, that time I could only afford a standing ticket. Zhenyong, I was very poor. But I told myself I must, Zhenyong, through my own efforts, in Chinese stand-up comedy, Zhenyong, find my own seat ticket, and I’m happy that this time, Zhenyong, I got a seat ticket. Zhenyong. Jinping, rural passenger transport. Zhenyong, look, it says multiple landslides, road closure ahead. Zhenyong, we can only take the old road, going up from below. Zhenyong, it’s only 8 kilometers, but the old road is 20 kilometers. Zhenyong. Dad’s here to pick me up. Zhenyong. Happy to be going home. Zhenyong. Just 1 kilometer left. This is the Ailao mountain region. Zhenyong. When I was a child living in this area, Zhenyong. it was depressing because, look, Zhenyong. nothing but mountains everywhere. Zhenyong couldn’t see any hope at all, but back then I said, Zhenyong. I said, I must leave these mountains behind. Zhenyong. Zhenyong. Zhouzhou, look at your uncle. Here comes uncle’s entrance. Zhenyong. Zhenyong, about what you told me on the phone before, congratulations. Pangbo. Got her own seat ticket. She might not understand it. Zhenyong. But when she sees me on stage wearing our Zhenyong. Hani ethnic clothing and standing there, Zhenyong. she becomes happy. Because honestly, Zhenyong. during my first two years doing stand-up comedy, I didn’t make any money. Zhenyong. But now I can confidently say I will definitely change our family Zhenyong. because of this profession. Everyone. Keep going! It’s not easy. Pangbo. Everyone who walks from that position to this stage, Pangbo. it’s just a few short steps, but before that, they might have been walking for many days, Pangbo. walking such a long, long way. Let’s continue with our competition. Pangbo. The next performer Pangbo. this friend of ours has a very unique performance style, and she’s also making Pangbo. her first appearance on this stage. Pangbo. Please give a round of applause for Chen Ai. Everyone. Go for it! Hello everyone, I’m Chen Ai. I’m a normal person. Although doctors don’t think so. Around this time last year, I wasn’t doing so well. I went to a mental health hospital. 600 Wanping South Road. Yes. Before I went there, I heard people joking about it, and I was a bit worried. I was afraid the patients there wouldn’t be able to control themselves and might suddenly attack me or something. But when I got there, it was actually quite nice. They only attack themselves. Much better than people on the internet. As soon as I arrived, the doctor had me take one of those depression and anxiety assessment tests. Have you ever taken that test? (Yes, I have.) You should take it often, it can boost your confidence. That’s the only test where I can score high marks. And the process was really strange. Even though it’s supposed to be a professional psychological assessment, all the answers were left for me to choose based on my feelings. And then they prescribe medication based on these results. Is it really that casual? It feels like they’re just asking, “Are you sick?” I say yes, and I’m diagnosed. They’re respecting my opinion a bit too much. I think an effective examination should be something you can’t manipulate. Like blood tests or CT scans. Because once I can control it, it’s hard to make normal choices, and I start weighing pros and cons instead. For example, there’s a question asking if you feel life is meaningless, which is hard to answer. If I downplay it, the trip wasn’t worth it. If I exaggerate, they won’t let me leave. There were many questions like this. The whole test gave me the impression that as long as you think you’re sick, they’ll always find something wrong. So I came up with a slogan for this place. “Come to the mental hospital, become who you want to be.” The testing environment wasn’t good either. I’ve taken tests at other hospitals before, where they had a special small room for you to answer questions. But this hospital had too many patients. Many people who received the test had to complete it in the hallway. The hallway was noisy. The person next to me, to avoid being disturbed, had to read all the questions and options out loud. Successfully disturbing me. For several questions, I just followed his choices. The final results showed I not only had depression and anxiety, but also a mild psychotic disorder. I knew he was sick. No, actually it’s me who’s sick. My symptom is that I often hear many different voices in my head. You think I’m doing stand-up comedy now? No, I’m hosting the Spring Festival Gala. There was a time when it got so bad that I had to tell myself to act normal before going out. But that doesn’t help me relax, it only makes me more likely to say the wrong things. For example, one time I went to buy milk tea, before I even reached the store, I started rehearsing what to say: Hello, I’d like a milk tea, cold or hot? Hot. WeChat. I had it all prepared when I got there. I said, Hello, I’d like a milk tea, and they actually asked if I wanted large or small. I hadn’t practiced for that! But I told myself, it’s okay, you can do this. What would a normal person ask now? How much is a large, how much is a small, right? But I was so nervous, I asked, what’s the difference between large and small? I immediately regretted it, because I realized he was looking at me like I was mentally challenged, saying, ‘The large is bigger, the small is smaller.’ This was a bit I wrote before. Back then, I wasn’t ready to face my mental illness, so I kept telling everyone I had social anxiety. But people with social anxiety just fear socializing, they don’t have something wrong with their brain. But I thought at the time it should be fine, socially anxious people wouldn’t confront me anyway. But actually, I didn’t think I was that abnormal, I thought you all were the abnormal ones. It’s just that there are more of you, and I couldn’t be bothered to argue. And although there are many of you in real life, there are many people in my head too. I just keep them contained when I’m outside. Sometimes I meet people who tell me, it’s okay, just relax, don’t be so tense. And I think to myself, if I relax, then you’ll be the ones getting nervous. Actually, having a mental illness was something I didn’t dare talk about before, but in the last couple of years, the environment has improved, everyone’s gone crazy. I never expected that someone with mental issues would catch such good times. God knows how long I’ve waited for this moment. Because over ten years ago, I was already in this state, and I thought back then I would never be accepted, until these past couple of years, when I heard a voice saying, the time has come. Turns out I wasn’t crazy, I was just ahead of the curve. I can even see hope now. They say in the information age, people are more prone to depression, which means you’ll all walk the same path I did. Good luck to you all, you’ll all go crazy sooner or later, don’t miss this opportunity to go mad, I’ll be waiting for you in the future. (Good) Being diagnosed with a mental illness the worst part is it destroys some of your perceptions of reality. It means some things you thought happened actually didn’t. Like in your lives, you all have some happy moments. Promotions. Vacations. Romance. But what if someone told you none of that exists? That you’re sick. Isn’t that terrifying? Actually, this performance doesn’t exist either. You made me up because you’re unhappy. You might think, that’s impossible. Your jokes aren’t even funny. It’s not that I’m not funny, it’s that your imagination is limited. Don’t worry, my imagination is rich. I’m already imagining you laughing. How about that? Let’s go crazy first. That’s all for now, thank you everyone. I’m Chen Ai, thank you. Pang Bo, thank you for Chen Ai’s performance. Audience members who enjoyed Chen Ai’s performance, please don’t forget to vote for her. Pang Bo. Voting countdown. Pang Bo. Let’s give another round of applause for Chen Ai. Before going on stage, including yesterday’s waiting period. Pang Bo. You must have been very nervous. Pang Bo. Are you feeling better now? Not as nervous. Chen Ai. I guess my imagination isn’t rich enough. Director Da Peng also gave you his vote very early on. Da Peng. Yes. Are you imitating her self- talking style? If applied to your opening performance, at least that opening act. Da Peng. It seems like it really happened. I feel like I filmed too early, because it gets more brilliant as it goes on. Da Peng. Her script is so impressive, especially toward the end. Da Peng. I thought she would end on the crazy punchline. That punchline was already at its peak. Da Peng. I thought it would end there. But she kept talking. Dapeng, what she continued to talk about elevated the entire performance Dapeng, to another level. She said maybe I’m not performing, Dapeng, it’s all in your imagination. Dapeng, if I’m not funny, it’s because your imagination isn’t rich enough. Dapeng, that gave me goosebumps. Dapeng, that’s exactly how it felt. I was with her. Guo Qilin, I was following what others had chosen, the one that resonated. Guo Qilin, there were indeed many things worthy of applause. Guo Qilin, as they say, things that really resonated with everyone. Guo Qilin, but I found that particularly amusing, I thought that, Guo Qilin, it was especially interesting to me. then when you came up with that state, I mean, Guo Qilin, I was being narrow-minded earlier. Guo Qilin, according to my thinking, when you first came up, Guo Qilin, you seemed a bit nervous, a bit timid. Guo Qilin, but as your performance went on, I realized that wasn’t the case, Guo Qilin, but rather you were already immersed in your own world. Guo Qilin, and then eloquently expressing all your viewpoints. Guo Qilin, and I think, technically speaking, Guo Qilin, this could also be considered observational comedy, observing myself. Chen Ai, observing everyone. Guo Qilin, including yourself, so I think this is Guo Qilin, really quite profound. it’s definitely worth savoring. Thank you. Chen Ai. Yang Tianzhen, I really like the topic Chen Ai is discussing. Because I think Yang Tianzhen, that indeed everyone is actually a bit crazy. It’s just a matter of when you go crazy. Yang Tianzhen, what exactly is your definition of crazy or normal? Yang Tianzhen, is it defined by those questions? Yang Tianzhen, what standards define it? Yang Tianzhen, whose authority defines it? I feel like Yang Tianzhen, such a definition doesn’t actually exist. It’s just certain people Yang Tianzhen who have gained the power to define and then determine who’s crazy and who’s normal. These definitions Yang Tianzhen, don’t really mean anything. Yang Tianzhen, I also believe that each of us can accept ourselves for who we are. Yang Tianzhen, because I’ve actually been called a very abnormal person since I was young. Yang Tianzhen, I had forgotten that feeling for many years. Yang Tianzhen, but when I heard you speaking, those feelings Yang Tianzhen, came rushing back. I feel like in society, Chen Ai, normality is only allowed within a certain range. Chen Ai, in our entire social system, Yang Tianzhen has definitions for what is perfect, what is excellent, Yang Tianzhen, what is happiness, and even what is normal – there’s a definition for everything. Yang Tianzhen, anything beyond those definitions is labeled abnormal, unhappy, Yang Tianzhen, imperfect, and mediocre. Yang Tianzhen, I strongly oppose this concept. Yes, Chen Ai. Yang Tianzhen, I think without these definitions, everyone can live as their authentic selves. Yang Tianzhen, so I believe you’re living as your authentic self. Yang Tianzhen, truly, your topic is very challenging. Yang Tianzhen, but you explained it so well, I really like it. Yang Tianzhen, thank you. Chen Ai, Zhisheng once told me something. Pang Bo, brother is what others Pang Bo, see too much of. Pang Bo: Actually, Chen Ai has been doing stand-up comedy for a while now. She’s not a newcomer in that sense, she’s been at it for quite some time, right? Xiaolu: Yes, performers really love her content. I’m really touched today. Xiaolu: I think Chen Ai, from the content she delivers, Xiaolu: the things she pulls from her heart, can very quickly Xiaolu: reach everyone’s hearts. Xiaolu: I have this feeling that people want to express themselves on the comedy stage, to find others like themselves. Xiaolu: You must be someone who feels Xiaolu: very lonely in life, so you seek this path Xiaolu: to find your own kind. Xiaolu: And just now when I heard Chen Ai say that she was just the first to go crazy, Xiaolu: it really is true. I’m also happy Xiaolu: that you’ve shared these things Xiaolu: so sincerely. Xiaolu: I’m glad we can continue together being crazy, Xiaolu and all, you have your tribe. Xiaolu: Thank you. Chen Ai: Pang Bo: I heard from the directing team that the reason Chen Ai chose to stand on the stage of this show Pang Bo: was also because Heideng recommended you, Pang Bo: or gave you some encouragement, is that right? Yes. Chen Ai: I’m crying. Heideng: It’s not that her jokes are so moving, it’s that I know everything she’s been through. Heideng: I know that for her to stand on that stage, she had to make such a tremendous effort. Heideng: And from Chen Ai, you can see that powerful Heideng: life force. Heideng: I really need club owners Chen Ai: to give me performance opportunities. Just one person. Heideng: She might have developed some psychological issues, or whatever, Heideng: stuck in some trauma or pain, finding it hard to move on, Heideng: but… Although she’s still struggling Heideng is still in torment and constantly going back and forth between Heideng and this inner conflict, but from Heideng, you can see through this struggle itself that Heideng has a life force growing tenaciously. She’s already fighting against it. Heideng, Tiantian, Heideng and I were crying tears of joy. She really has it harder than others. Tiantian, everyone can probably see from the footage that Tiantian has poor memory and struggles to concentrate. Tiantian is already trying her best to perform well. Tiantian, and the fact that she’s being accepted is truly wonderful. Tiantian has finally caught her lucky break. Because before in my life, Chen Ai was very marginalized and repressed. Chen Ai wasn’t seen either. No matter how hard I tried in my life, Chen Ai just couldn’t become like mainstream society. I was always trying to get closer to that. Chen Ai, because feeling unaccepted is terrible, but after I heard Chen Ai Teacher Heideng’s comedy bits, I really liked them. Chen Ai, because he is giving a voice to this community. Chen Ai, I think a stage like this needs such voices. Do you have anything you’d like to say to the director, Teacher Heideng? Chen Ai is extremely grateful to Teacher Heideng. Just saying it with words? Heideng, I bow down to you. Chen Ai, the little dark room for solving problems. Pangbo, besides that, this stage Pangbo is also a place where everyone can be themselves. Thank you for your performance. Pangbo, and thank you all for recognizing Chen Ai’s performance. Pangbo received 3 votes from the atmosphere group. Pangbo, full votes. The challenge segment will now begin. Pang Bo. All performers present. Pang Bo, does anyone want to challenge Chen Ai? Pang Bo. Countdown for the last five seconds. No challengers. Pang Bo. Chen Ai advances to the next round. Let’s take a look at Pang Bo. her final score. 159 votes. Pang Bo. Congratulations to Chen Ai for advancing. Xiao Jia. She made it. Way to go! I think Chen Ai today was Wang Xinbo. beyond my expectations. Wang Xinbo, she truly performed brilliantly Wang Xinbo. and with composure. Wang Xinbo, this bit gave me chills down my spine. Wang Xinbo. I think this is Wang Xinbo. really excellent content. Xiao Lu, I really love Chen Ai’s content. Xiao Lu, a truly wonderful society should be one where no one judges Xiao Lu. whether you’re normal or not. I think she’s very brave Xiao Lu. to talk about such things. We are born Xiao Jia. as vulnerable in certain aspects of life. The stand-up comedy stage Xiao Jia. brings together a group of such highly sensitive people. Xiao Jia. And then they embrace Xiao Jia. and connect with each other. Stand-up comedy as an art form Ying Ning. allows different people to be seen. Ying Ning. It helps more people Ying Ning, with similar experiences connect with each other. Ying Ning. I believe Ying Ning. that’s the charm of stand-up comedy. This year’s new friends Pang Bo are indeed unique, each with their own style. Pang Bo Let’s continue with our show. Next up on stage is also a new friend, Pang Bo also a young performer, someone from a small town Pang Bo who has finally made it to the grand stage of Xidan, Pang Bo a young talent. Let’s welcome Pang Bo Lin Jianqi! Go for it! Nangua! Zhang Cailing! Lin Jianqi is so handsome! Lin Jianqi is incredibly handsome! Dun’er what are you doing, don’t kill me with your handsomeness! Dun’er is indeed very handsome. Huang Yijin Lin Jianqi. A-Shui he’s way too handsome. Jianqi has a kind of Yingning Northeastern high school delinquent vibe, like a Northeastern Shun Oguri. Yingning Lin Jianqi is so handsome. Hip-hop oh my goodness! What? Hip-hop some are even calling me a big idiot. Lin Jianqi, his aura is something else. Shi Yan he just looks like someone with that handsome heartthrob quality. Shi Yan but once he opens his mouth, he doesn’t seem that bright. Shi Yan he’s just that type. Director please introduce yourself briefly. Lin Jianqi. Now. Lin Jianqi currently lives in Beijing. The words ‘going to internet cafes’. Tang Xiangyu I haven’t heard that in years, I was wondering why… Tang Xiangyu do people still go to internet cafes? What’s going on? Tang Xiangyu are you a middle school student? Are you? Tang Xiangyu this kid Lin Jianqi. Zhai Jianing in our Northeastern dialect, he’s what we call ‘quietly mischievous’. Zhai Jianing. He has a very distinctive personality Zhai Jianing is like that eccentric Huang Laoxie type. Zhai Jianing. He’s so abstract. Yueming. Xiaolin. Liangyan. I think his jokes have really strange punchlines, Liangyan, but they’re worth pondering over, he has this Liangyan has this indescribable charm. Lin Jianqi is also very talented, Liu Yang is also a very promising newcomer. Liu Yang. Lin Jianqi. Lin Jianqi has won several competitions Heideng championship and runner-up titles. Heideng. Xiaolin is the one who at the Annual New Joke Competition defeated me, Liangyan and achieved first place. It’s well-deserved, Liangyan, I’ll break down first. Lin Jianqi. He almost broke down today. Hip-hop. As the team leader, hip-hop, I was a bit worried at the time, many people hip-hop might have hip-hop slightly high expectations of him. Hip-hop, I was afraid that if everyone did that, hip-hop it would put pressure on him. I’m not afraid of losing, Lin Jianqi just perform well. Come on, Lin Jianqi. Good luck. Nangua. Hello everyone, I’m Lin Jianqi. I’m from Northeast China. I was born in a small county in the Northeast, Fushun. I think being born in a small city, makes it difficult to introduce yourself. When people ask where I’m from, I say Liaoning, they ask which part of Liaoning, I say Fushun, they ask where Fushun is, I say it’s close to Shenyang. It’s always so complicated, so I usually just say directly, I’m from Fushun, near Shenyang, Liaoning. I’m from Fushun, near Shenyang, Liaoning. Until this guy from the South firmly shook my hand, and said, “Hello, Fushun.” “Hello, Fushun.” “I’m Guangxi, nice to meet you.” I’ve heard from many friends from small cities that when getting around in small cities you just hail taxis on the street and taxis there only do two things carpooling and refusing passengers. Once I was sitting in the front passenger seat when the driver stopped and asked someone on the sidewalk, ‘Need a ride?’ The person looked and said, ‘There’s already someone in the car’ then shook their head. After that head shake the driver started cursing saying, ‘What’s the big deal?’ ‘Why are you afraid of another passenger?’ ‘Is he a corpse or something?’ I thought that was really uncivilized. Another time when I needed a taxi I just waved my hand and two taxis stopped at the same time. Before I could say anything the two drivers started arguing with each other. One said ‘I already stopped, why are you stopping too?’ The other replied ‘Did I park on your father or something?’ ‘Just because you stopped’ ‘doesn’t mean I can’t stop too.’ I just stood there. When other empty taxis passed by I didn’t dare wave them down I could only wait there. Waiting for one of them to prove stronger and drive the other one away. Through the window, I asked the victorious driver ‘Sir, I need to go to the train station.’ He said, ‘Young man’ ‘I don’t go there.’ There weren’t any shared bikes either. Actually they had deployed a batch of shared bikes but they disappeared overnight. All taken by elderly people who sold them for scrap metal. It happened so fast just one night and Hello Bikes were gone. Just imagine the scene elderly women hammering bike frames into scrap metal putting it in their own bike baskets and riding off to sell it. We always talk about thinking outside the box but they took it quite literally. The frame is a frame, the structure is a structure. Old men would come out with tricycles loading shared bikes into the back. Piled up so high that just by looking at their tricycles you couldn’t tell if they were stealing the bikes or deploying them you know? One night I stepped outside in a daze and felt like I’d time-traveled. On the main street people were prying with iron bars and hammering away. It was shocking. A community activity. I said, ‘What’s going on’ ‘are we back to backyard steel furnaces?’ The elderly people there are extremely free, nothing can restrict them, not even religion. They don’t even follow mainstream religions, many elderly people become religious because they’re getting older and preparing for heaven. Few believe in anything else. If you talk to them about reincarnation, they’ll say, “Reincarnation? No thanks.” Religion has all these restrictions. Their religious principle is basically “I can do whatever I want because I can always confess.” So you can witness this strange phenomenon of many elderly people outside the church playing cards. Oh my! These fallen angels. They play cards for a week, then go in for a service. You’ve never heard them say, “Lord, I confess, I played my three-card combo too early”? There’s no cultural atmosphere either. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen those fake book shells, usually found in restaurants or hotels, in big bosses’ offices as decorations, just sitting on shelves, completely hollow inside. The first time I saw fake book shells was in our local library. I wondered, “Did this place first get fake books, or did it first lose its culture?” Can you imagine? All these eager young people thirsting for knowledge, open a book and think, “Where’s my culture?” I even looked it up online, these are called “simulation books.” Just listen to that name, “simulation books.” I’ve always been very clear about the definition of real and fake. When I was young, I wore some high-quality knockoff shoes and such. My classmate pointed at me and said, “Your shoes are fake.” I think real and fake depends on your perspective. To you, they’re fake Nikes, but to me, they’re… But these simulation books, they’re not even books, they’re just paper shells. If the elderly found out, they’d take them all away. What’s even weirder than having fake books in a library is that these fake book shells can actually be borrowed. When they told me these books could only be checked out for 30 days, I was completely stunned. I said, “There couldn’t possibly be words inside, right?” The teacher asked if I’d read Dream of the Red Chamber. I said, “When I opened it, there was nothing inside. Have I really read it?” I’ve seen right through it all. That’s all for now, thank you everyone. Thank you, thank you, Lin Jianqi. Pang Bo. If you enjoyed Lin Jianqi’s performance just now, dear audience, please don’t forget to vote for him. Pang Bo. Thanks again to Lin Jianqi. Pang Bo. A newcomer friend. Pang Bo. Before he came on stage, I didn’t dare say too much. Pang Bo. Didn’t want to set expectations too high. But actually, Jianqi has been someone everyone’s been paying attention to this past year. Pang Bo. A new performer who has also participated in many offline competitions. Pang Bo. A newcomer with excellent achievements, who has also won the Xiaolu championship. The Xiaolu Liang Xifan New Jokes Competition. Xiaolu. Since its establishment, Liangyan has always been taking the championship. Xiaolu. So it’s also called the Xiaolu Liangyan Cup. Pang Bo. Indeed. I see the hype team members were also laughing their heads off. Pang Bo. I remember it was Director Dapeng who hit the button first, right? Yes. Dapeng. He is. Dapeng. I am. When Chunfu introduced my hometown Ji’an. Dapeng. Nobody knew about it, so I was. Dapeng. The one who hit the button at that moment. Dapeng. I really resonated with that. Dapeng. I’m quite happy. Dapeng. I’ve been suppressing my accent all day. Dapeng. Dapeng. I want to let it out now, I’ve been forcing myself to speak standard Mandarin. Dapeng. But after watching his performance. Dapeng. I don’t know why. You manage to speak Northeastern dialect in a way. You speak Northeastern dialect in a way. Dapeng. That shows people unfamiliar with the Northeast. Dapeng. You’ve really well demonstrated what Northeasterners are really like. Da Peng has done a great job promoting his hometown. Da Peng, because I also love this land deeply. You can see in my movies, Da Peng. I often portray stories from my hometown. Da Peng. So I feel like there’s this kind of Da Peng. Northeast cultural renaissance happening on this stand-up comedy stage. Da Peng. Even the Northeastern dialect is making a comeback. Guo Qilin. It’s reviving again. Da Peng. I really enjoy your performance, Da Peng. looking forward to your upcoming bits, keep it up. Da Peng. Da Peng, we all love our hometowns and the people there. Da Peng. I think Lin Jianqi. Yang Tianzhen. He looks a bit like Zhang Ruoyun, don’t you think? Yang Tianzhen. I do. Guo Qilin. I agree. Guo Qilin. Da Peng, we have several celebrity lookalikes on our show, Shaobing counts as one too. Guo Qilin. Shaobing. Guo Qilin. He gives off Yang Tianzhen. this strange vibe, just really peculiar. Yang Tianzhen. What is it exactly? Lin Jianqi. It’s right now. Pang Bo. It’s you. Yang Tianzhen. Weird, but also really fun. Yang Tianzhen. Xiaolu. Handsome yet abstract. Yang Tianzhen. That’s a good description, both handsome and abstract. Yang Tianzhen. Pang Bo, I think he’s a bit like Dalin, they’re actually very young. Pang Bo. But they have this somewhat mature quality about them. Pang Bo. But the way you two are mature is completely different. Pang Bo. Am I really that mature? Guo Qilin. I’d also like to promote Guo Qilin. our Tianjin dialect, it’s actually pretty good too. Guo Qilin. Really excellent. Guo Qilin. Guo Qilin, I especially love your that hesitant delivery style. Guo Qilin. Guo Qilin, that flavor is just perfect. I love that punchline the most. Guo Qilin. I didn’t have time to capture it before it was over. Guo Qilin. We don’t have shared bikes where I’m from. Guo Qilin. But actually we did have them before. Guo Qilin. This punchline is just priceless, it’s so hilarious. Guo Qilin. So now you don’t ride shared bikes either, right? Lin Jianqi. Back then I had been to big cities. Lin Jianqi. No, just kidding. Guo Qilin. Really great, I think your Guo Qilin. style and everything is truly unique. Guo Qilin. And it really holds up to watching, Guo Qilin. and to thinking about. I think you should be Guo Qilin. a strong contender for this year’s champion. Pang Bo. Looking forward to your next performance, this time Pang Bo. you also got 3 votes from the atmosphere group. Pang Bo’s challenge round now begins. If any other performers want to challenge, Pang Bo. please stand up. Countdown for five seconds. Pang Bo. Director Da Peng hit the light. Pang Bo. Lin Jianqi’s challenge round has been upgraded to a gold-grabbing session. Pang Bo. Hip-hop, now that he’s got it, we have to snatch it from him, right? Da Peng. So many people. Yang Tianzhen. They’re going to grab the gold medal. (Yang Mengqi). They’re fighting now. Come on. Lin Jianqi. Yu Bo. Yu Bo is coming. Lin Jianqi. Pang Bo. A round of applause for Yu Bo, I’ve met Yu Bo backstage. Xiao Bei. He doesn’t look like this. Yu Bo. My name is Yu Bo, I’m from Qitaihe City, Heilongjiang Province. Here. Yu Bo. I usually perform at Comedy Union Box. Yu Bo. I am Yu Bo. I’m quite reserved. Liu Rencheng. Because I think Lin Jianqi. Liu Rencheng, because everyone really likes Liu Rencheng. We get along really well. Liu Rencheng, he’s definitely one of the newcomers everyone’s looking forward to this year. Liu Rencheng, of course, and everyone’s also looking forward to Yu Bo. I think for Liu Rencheng as a newcomer, for him to choose Liu Rencheng, such a highly anticipated newcomer as Liu Rencheng, is a very brave choice. Yu Bo. Number Seven is my mental demon. Previously in the Xifan New Jokes Competition finals, I tried to follow Yu Bo but completely failed. He won that competition, while Yu Bo I came in second to last. That time he performed so well that I, Yu Bo, had a complete awakening. He performed so well that I, Yu Bo, felt in perfect harmony. Yu Bo. My head was buzzing. Yu Bo, I thought, can someone really write jokes like this? For a long time, whenever Yu Bo wrote jokes, his head was full of Lin Jianqi. It’s a very personal decision for me. Yu Bo. I just want to beat Lin Jianqi. Yu Bo. I just want to overcome my mental demon. Yu Bo. Lin Jianqi is the strongest newcomer. Yu Bo. What’s going on? Hello everyone, friends. I’m very happy to perform for you all. My name is Yu Bo. I come from a province known for education (Shandong). Heilongjiang. Alright, Brother Peng, keep going. Number Seven talks about Fushun, Liaoning, a small city in Northeast China. I said, isn’t that basically the South? Of course, being an education powerhouse isn’t just a rumor. Everyone, I know in recent years, the internet has developed deep stereotypes about Heilongjiang. Kids from Northeast China smoking, drinking, fighting, hanging out with gangs. Standing there looking like they’re trying too hard to hide something. Heilongjiang is the place that values basic education the most in the country. It has the highest high school attendance rate in the country. You all might not know this. It’s much higher than Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. My small hometown has 600,000 people, 7 high schools, and no vocational or technical schools. Every troublemaker has a diploma. If you look at every person who beats you up. Everyone knows trigonometry. What’s the use of learning that? I say, watch those Hong Kong triad movies. I say in those films, if there was even one person from Heilongjiang, you’d spot them immediately. The boss would say, throw this guy into the sea, he’ll drown and sink. Boss, that won’t work. Because of the buoyancy formula, F(buoyancy) = ρ(liquid)gV(displaced). Once drowned, he’ll float. Valuing education, the idea that studying changes your destiny, is ingrained in our bones. We never hide the purpose of studying, it’s very direct and exaggerated. Back then in high school, even our class name was directly called the ‘Tsinghua-Peking Class.’ Tsinghua-Peking Class. Too direct. This is different from Hengshui High School, they don’t call it that. Whether we’d get in or not is another matter, we just named it that, named it first. Those who claim the name first get to enjoy Tsinghua and Peking first. But this name was too heavy. On the first day, the teacher would use that name to scold us, standing there, being very harsh. Thirty students, all thirty of you in this class must get into Tsinghua or Peking University. Whoever doesn’t get in is the class failure, a loser. That year, Tsinghua and Peking University only admitted 20 students from Heilongjiang through regular exams. In the absolute best case scenario, our class might tearfully produce a dozen or so. The losers forced to attend other top universities. This kind of class is terrifying. For Tsinghua and Peking, we decorated all kinds of slogans. Rush to Tsinghua-Peking, Dream of Tsinghua-Peking, the whole classroom was decorated like some kind of Tsinghua-Peking theme park. Everyone’s scores and line graphs of the admission cutoffs. The water dispenser was named Weiming Lake. Studying there, grading papers, we didn’t dare press hard. Had to write lightly. Every day in this theme park, studying until dazed. Wondering if at 6:30 the principal would parade around on a float? No. This name was very heavy, teachers would use it to scold us, many things became off-limits. Like using phones. You useless bunch want to get into Tsinghua-Peking? Do Tsinghua-Peking students play with phones? Do Tsinghua-Peking students date? Those Tsinghua-Peking students, do Tsinghua-Peking students even talk? You couldn’t tell if they were scolding us or the Tsinghua-Peking students. Sitting there, I was confused. I wondered what they actually do? They’re just a bunch of single mutes who can’t use phones. That year of the college entrance exam, I indeed missed the opportunity, didn’t get in. Because I knew too many things. I was forced to attend Tongji University in Shanghai and be a loser for four years. It wasn’t worth it, because honestly, it wasn’t what I wanted to study. Because in that educational mindset, if you don’t get into those two best schools, many life choices are no longer available to you. I really wanted to study sociology at Renmin University in Beijing. My mom said, ‘Sociology? Why study at Renmin University? Just learn from society itself.’ I listened to my mom and studied computer science at Tongji in Shanghai. I said, ‘Then why not learn computer science in an internet café?’ Because that mindset was instilled in me since childhood, saying you must study hard to earn big money in big cities. If you don’t study hard and stay in your hometown, you’ll starve to death. I believed this without question when I was young, until I actually came to Shanghai and realized it wasn’t true. Because I could study hard in a big city and still starve. If someone wants to starve, they can starve anywhere. With Shanghai’s cost of living, it’s even easier to starve. But honestly, the year I got into university in Shanghai, I was completely immersed in the illusion that I had escaped from that small city. I thought I’d work in Shanghai for a few years and then buy a house and car, while you guys back home would be nothing. Until I went home for New Year this year and attended a class reunion, everyone except me who stayed in our hometown had bought cars. Everyone from my hometown drove to the reunion. I was the only one at the class reunion who walked two kilometers to the restaurant in -30 degrees. When I was the only one entering the restaurant, my glasses were frosted over. Those who had cars could just wipe the frost off their glasses with windshield wipers. That’s the difference in our mindsets. Because in Shanghai, a city of struggle, you think, why would a 23-year-old fresh graduate drive a car? At 23 in Shanghai, you should be hustling, taking the subway. If you don’t take the subway at 23, when will you take it, right? For me, a car should be something I get after working hard in Shanghai for many years, struggling and building up savings, finally becoming middle class and pursuing cars and houses – that’s the reward for my hard work. Cars should be earned, but it’s different back home. Back home. What reward for hard work? You just need to reach a certain age, and your parents will buy you a house and a car. It’s not a reward for hard work, it’s more like a participation trophy. Just being alive long enough is sufficient. I really don’t understand why my friends back in my hometown have lives that make me so envious. Because from my perspective, many of them haven’t solved their own independent living issues, yet their parents have everything arranged for them, and I’m extremely jealous. Are they really living independently? I asked a buddy of mine, why did you buy a car? It’s different from your life in Shanghai, back home we can’t find ways to spend our money. I said, can’t spend your money? Are you getting counterfeit cash or something? That statement was a real eye-opener for me. At that moment, I suddenly realized that in the adult world, it’s not entirely about education changing your destiny. No one cares about testing them anymore. I asked a buddy, I said, come on, who invented the AC electrical system? He said, I don’t know, get lost, and then drove away in his Tesla. That’s all for now. Thank you, I’m Yu Bo. Bye-bye. Thank you for Yu Bo’s performance, Pang Bo. If you enjoyed his performance, please don’t forget to vote for him. Pang Bo, voting countdown. Pang Bo, final three seconds. Pang Bo, please lock in your votes. Pang Bo, thank you, Yu Bo. Yu Bo is actually Pang Bo, a performer based in Shanghai. Pang Bo is a comedian from Comedy Union. Though Pang Bo looks quite tough, Pang Bo is actually born after 2000. He actually just mentioned, Pang Bo, none of you noticed, right? Pang Bo, 23 years old. Da Peng, born in 2001. Yu Bo, everyone’s math skills. Yu Bo, you still need to work a bit harder, go study in Heilongjiang. Yu Bo. Also directed by Da Peng Pang Bo this fellow Northeasterner Pang Bo from ‘A Northeastern Family’ right? Pang Bo yes. Da Peng I thought this show Da Peng was being recorded in Shenyang. Yu Bo to be honest Yu Bo, when I was writing this bit I was deeply influenced by Director Da Peng Yu Bo actually quite profoundly. Yu Bo, I really loved your work when I was in middle school. Guo Qilin almost got into Tongji University, right? Yu Bo, I read your first book Yu Bo, ‘Laughing Out Loud in Difficult Times.’ Yu Bo, what really moved me then was a scene in it. Yu Bo about Ji’an the night it was upgraded from a county to a city Yu Bo the whole county was setting off fireworks Yu Bo and you were only 6 years old then Yu Bo, you could only see everyone’s heads. Da Peng thank you. Da Peng, through your stand-up comedy performance Da Peng really everyone now wants Da Peng Da Peng, to learn about your hometown. Da Peng, I also thought about my own hometown I try whenever possible Da Peng to set my stories Da Peng in my hometown for filming. I previously made a film called Da Peng ‘The Sewing Machine Band.’ At that time Da Peng for the filming of this movie Da Peng, we built a giant guitar in the town. Later Da Peng Da Peng, because of work Da Peng I rarely get to go back home anymore. Da Peng, later I saw next to it Da Peng, one of those social media check-in signs that said Da Peng ‘I’m in Director Da Peng’s hometown Da Peng missing you.’ I was standing by that sign Da Peng thinking to myself actually, Da Peng himself Da Peng Da Peng also misses Director Da Peng’s hometown. But Da Peng the place you can never truly return to Da Peng is your hometown. We may have traveled too far. Dapeng. Sometimes we need to return to the land Dapeng. that nourished us. Dapeng. We need to reconnect with it to gain strength to move forward. Today, watching your stand-up comedy, Dapeng. I gained that kind of strength. Dapeng. Thank you. Our hometown is called Qitaihe. Yu Bo. Qitaihe is actually a very small city. Yu Bo. It’s one of the smallest and least populated Yu Bo. prefecture-level cities in China. The smallest in Heilongjiang. Yu Bo. Even smaller than Fushun, right? Fushun is much bigger. Lin Jianqi. Yu Bo. We never even had shared bikes there. Pang Bo. Indeed, leaving your hometown and then going to these so-called big cities, whether chasing dreams Pang Bo. or pursuing further education, Pang Bo. is the life story of so many people. These people sitting here Pang Bo. actually share many of your life stories, right? Pang Bo. Sister Tianzhen. Just now when I saw Yang Tianzhen. Yu Bo coming down, I kept staring at his profile page Yang Tianzhen. over and over again. Yang Tianzhen. Is this you? Yu Bo. Yes, it’s me. Yang Tianzhen. Is this you from before? Yu Bo. I was younger then, probably. Because I always relied on studying when I was young. Yu Bo What’s wrong with wanting to study? After coming to Shanghai. Yu Bo My rebellious phase came a bit late, when I was about 18 or 19, Yu Bo I suddenly started rebelling. So how did you start Yang Tianzhen doing stand-up comedy? Back then at Tongji University, Yu Bo we had a club. Yang Tianzhen A stand-up comedy club? Yes. Yu Bo It was one of the earliest Yu Bo stand-up comedy clubs in China. Really early on. Yu Bo Then I enrolled in 2019, and that same year, Yu Bo I was immediately recruited by the club. Yu Bo I said I wanted to join the traditional comedy club. Yu Bo He said, ‘Don’t go there, you’re making the right choice not to.’ Guo Qilin I suddenly feel Guo Qilin like I’m getting old too. Last year when I saw Yu Xiangyu, Guo Qilin I felt like I was already old. Guo Qilin: Is Yu Xiangyu also born after 2000? Yu Xiangyu I was born in 1998. Yu Xiangyu We’re both post-95s, I’m just closer to it. Guo Qilin I’m 29. Guo Qilin Yu Xiangyu is 27, and then look at this guy, Guo Qilin he’s 24. I’m 26, Yu Xiangyu I haven’t had my birthday yet. That’s how young people are. Guo Qilin Pang Bo is so petty. Yes. Guo Qilin isn’t like that, he just feels. Guo Qilin Oh my goodness, that’s amazing. Guo Qilin I used to think I was still a kid, but now I feel. Guo Qilin All these people who are younger and more talented than me keep emerging, it seems like. Guo Qilin If I don’t work harder, it seems I’ll really have to. Guo Qilin focus on film and TV, I might have to. Guo Qilin No. Guo Qilin That’s great, thank you. Guo Qilin Pang Bo is really good. Pang Bo We all envy you, at such a young age, you already have such polished skills. You can take what matters most to you, and what troubles you the most. Pang Bo Clearly. Pang Bo Explain it all to everyone. Pang Bo The atmosphere team gave you full marks. Let’s welcome Lin Jianqi back to the stage. Who will win Pang Bo in this showdown? Pang Bo Please check the results on the big screen. These two are really Guo Qilin an unexpected powerhouse matchup. Guo Qilin I think there should be such. Wang Yue Some high-level competition matches. Wang Yue Let everyone experience this year’s new talents’ Wang Yue impact. Lin Jianqi and Yu Bo. Zhang Cailing Their topics are quite similar, but I really love Lin Jianqi’s set. Zhang Cailing I think he has a good chance of winning. Coach Xu Offline, Lin Jianqi might have performed better than Yu Bo, but that day I felt. Coach Xu Yu Bo connected better with the audience, I liked both of their sets. Coach Xu Please check the results on the big screen.

  1. 陈艾真的强,这么多生理女性演员里面,唯一没用用性别对立,自身不幸映射大众的。还演的这么好,确实厉害。
