Ferry Terminal父島 This is our boat travel from Tokyo to Chichijima (Ogasawara) Distance between Tokyo and Chichijima is around 1,000 km. We have arrived at Chichijima around 11:30am After 24 hour boat ride from Tokyo. Quite surprising that there’s a welcome band when you arrive. I guess it’s a special event here since boat only comes here once a week. We are looking for our driver who will pick us up from here to our hotel. Monumento a la Ballena
クジラのモニュメント This is the common meeting place if you have a guide here. Today, we are staying at WEST Annex. It’s advisable to book in advance as there are only few hotels available here. Hotel tour will be in upcoming video… Before we go to our afternoon city tour, we are going to have quick lunch. The town is small enough to walk around. We decided to have a quick lunch here. “Snorkeling Tour” This is our meeting place for today’s afternoon city tour. Hie is our city guide for today. Our first location is Miyanohama Beach. It’s about 5 mins drive from the main town. Miyanohama Beach
宮之浜園地 This is the first location of our city tour. “You can do snorkeling around this area and the left side has many corals and fishes.” “There are many activities here like boat tours…” “…where you can swim with dolphins.” This is called “Takonoki” meaning “Octopus tree” It’s a unique and iconic tree found in Ogasawara Islands. “There’s also traps setup up to protect these trees.” He is explaining that this was used during war. “For your enjoyful diving… (written here what fishes you can see here at this area). “Toilet here is public use and maintained voluntarily by townspeople”. He explains the island names in Ogasawara Island Group.
“Anijima (Older Brother Island)” “Chichi (Father), Ani (Older Brother) Islands” “Otouto-jima (Younger Brother Island)” “Chichi, Ani, Otouto” Chichijima Retto ((父島列島) – “Father Island Group” “Mukojima (智島)- Groom Island” “Yomejima(嫁島) – Bride Island” “In between is Nakodojima – Matchmaker Island” “All together are called Mukojima Retto – Groom Island Group” “You can see these islands around 9:30am to 10:00am from the boat from Tokyo.” “So boat will pass thru Mukojima Retto first then arrive at Chichijima.” “Distance between two island group is 50km.” “About 50 km from Chichijima…” “Hahajima(母島)- Mother Island” “Anejima(姉島)Older Sister Island” “Imoutojima (妹島) – Younger sister Island”
“Meijima(姪島) – Niece Island” “Islands have female family members names.” “Hahajima Retto ((母島列島) – Mother Island Group” “Only islands inhabited with people are Chihijima and Hahajima”. “About 280km From Chichijima…” “…Iwo-jima Island Group.” “It was part of WW2 and currently there’s a Japanese military base.” “There are Northern and Southern Iwo-jima Islands” “These are also administered by Ogasawara, Tokyo.” “Those are 4 island groups.” “There’s another island 1000km from Chichijima.” “The island is called ‘Minami Torishima (南鳥島)’. ” “Another one, around 1,000km, the island is called ‘Okinotorishima (沖ノ鳥島)'”. “Those islands are not inhabitable by people.” “… and about 30km west of Chichijima is ‘Nishinoshima (西之島)'” “This is the recently formed island due to volcanic activity.” “All these islands belong to Ogasawara, Tokyo.” “Only 2 islands are inhabited by people: Chichijima and Hahajima.” ”Chichi-jima population: About 2,100″
“Haha-jima population: About 450” “About 2 hours by boat between Chichi-jima and Haha-jima.” “If you take a look at google maps, you can see how wide is the Ogasawara Island Group.” You can also see some wild birds in this area as well. Town Lookout
Road going to Weather Station This is our 2nd location that is overlooking at the town. The sea is crystal clear and blue. You can see Ogasawara-maru ship docked at the port. Our 3rd location is quite far. It might be better to go here by car. Miyazukiyama Observation Deck
三日月山展望台 Our 3rd location for the city tour. This is a scenic viewpoint located on Chichijima Island. This is on west side of Chichijima. You can see the sun setting on the Pacific Ocean from here. It is perfect spot for whale watching from land from January to April. “Humpback whale Behaviour”

“Tail slap” “Fluke up dive” “Breach” It’s possible to see Hahajima on a clear day. Unfortunately, we are in month of September so it’s not whale season. It was good that we had a clear day! It seems this is also a playground for children. We’re off to another location. The next location is called Hatsuneura Observation Deck. It takes about 15 min drive from Weather Station lookout. “Yoakeyama (夜明山)” Mt. Yoake

Elevation: 307.5m This is the hiking entrance to Mt. Yoake. But our tour does not include hiking to Mt. Yoake. “This is an old military power generator during WW2.” The hole you see it caused by a bomb dropped from airplane during WW2. He is explaining that this is used by military to provide electricity during WW2. We have to walk for another 5 minutes. We finally arrived to our lookout destination. Hatsuneura Lookout
初寝浦展望台 You can see the Hatsuneura Beach below. This is a scenic viewpoint located on the eastern coast of Chichijima. It’s a clifftop viewpoint roughly 250 meters above sea level. “Be careful of animals.”

東平 This is a central forested mountain area designated as a sanctuary for…. … Red-Headed Wood Pigeon. This is part of Ogasawara National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kopepe Beach
コペペ海岸 The name comes from a native of the island who used to use this beach. The beach is rich with corals and good for snorkeling. It takes 14 minutes by car from town. This was a turtle’s nest. “The turtle was about 130 kilograms.” “One turtle produces about 50 to 120 eggs.” “Turtles are born around May to August.” “All the eggs are gathered and delivered to Ogasawara Marine Center from tourist spots like this.” “Those eggs are taken care until they hatch.” Kopepe Beach is a nesting ground for green turtles. “Summary of City Tour”

There are public buses here but it might be easier to rent a car. We are now going to our last location. Seihyo Beach

大神山公園 This is the large park located within the town. There’s a beach just behind this park. This park is quite spacious. There’s an easy access to the back behind this park. Ohmura Beach

  2. The explanation of your guide of the Ogasawara Islands was so interesting. I knew absolutely nothing about them, and I find it great, that he explained all the names, and the distances between the islands etc. Its fascinating that they are so far away from Tokyo, but still "belong" to Tokyo.

    Thank you very much for translating all that great information ! I didnt realise that you speak fluent Japanese. I suppose that without Japanese, it will be very difficult or even impossible to visit this remote place ?
