5 days bikepacking in Kyushu
[Music] [Music] Here we go. Brotherhood. [Music] I feel heat. [Music] Good morning, Rachel. Trying to pack everything as we did the day before. [Music] We’re taking the ferry in that direction to the other island. Should be a short ferry ride to I forgot the name. Puranamoto. And from there we’ll cycle further. So let’s go. [Music] No, they were going to have this rolling hills up and down, up and down. Few bumps. [Music] We just stopped along the road and here you can see all the flowers in the tree. It’s actually another tree growing in the tree. So many flowers. [Music] [Music] So, we’re biking and there is this random car behind me and it makes the weirdest noises. [Music] So, this is the end of day two of the bike packing trip. We are now in Kahushima. And as you can see, there are a lot of fairies here. And tomorrow morning, one of those fairies is going to bring us to the island over there. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] So, we just got off the third ferry of the trip, and it’s the last ferry, I think, of the trip, but it’s the first of the day. And this one is special because it’s big. It goes every 15 minutes or so. And apparently, it’s pay labor. And we’re now on the island with the volcano as you can see looming in the distance. That is beautiful. Here’s the map where you clearly see the whole caldera and the volcano we’re cycling around. Now we came from this direction yesterday. Now we’re going to loop around the island and then follow the bay up north. [Music] Cycling in Japan, there is always a bonsai tree somewhere. [Music] [Music] So, we’re now in a black sand beach where apparently you can dig your own hotring. They even have cute little shovels you can take with you. So, of course, we’re going to give it a try. Big hole on the beach with a very heavy shovel. Is it warm? It’s super warm. Cool. So, this is us trying. Apparently, you should do it with low tide and that’s not at this moment. But we got our own mini hotring. Maybe we can dip one foot in it or put it on our face. Maybe a toe. Maybe one toe. But it works. Pretty liquid. Now it’s time to cool down. [Music] Almost as far as the eye can reach, you can see vinegar. It’s aging here in clay pots or fermenting probably. Look at that countless [Music] Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. Day four on the bike. We started kind of late because we waited out the rain a bit. But as you can see, it’s still pretty humid and with occasional drops of rain. But even with rain, Japan is be full. This is the first break of the day. We’re on our way to a cave hidden in the pine forest. And again, another day with very different landscapes. Wow. Oh, wow. So, this is the cave inside. We don’t know what’s going on here. Maybe this is the first place in Japan where they tried LSD. It’s pretty big. [Music] We swapped the bikes for a proper jungle track. [Music] [Music] Heat. Hey, heat. Hey, heat. [Music] So fortunately after rain there’s always sunshine and now that we had a very rainy start luckily our clothes can dry off again and we can still enjoy a few hours of sunshine. Not sure if you can see this, but the roads can be pretty bumpy in Japan. Maybe we are a little bit spoiled coming from the Netherlands, but especially in the downhill, it really slows you down. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Well, good morning. It’s day five of the bike packing trip and the day starts a bit foggy. I don’t know if you can see it, but we cannot see that far. just to give you an idea what we’re dealing with this morning. So, the sun is trying to get through. [Music] 12:00 65k in and we see the city on our left hand. Finally the sea as well. So that’s where our last ferry is back home. [Music] [Music] [Music] So we were done with the busy roads are now the local roads. [Music] We’re getting close to the final ferry and in the distance you can see our destination. [Music] Okay. So, welcome inside the last and the most luxurious fairy of all. What? And we’re at the other side. [Music] We made it till sunset. We rode until taking the train back to Nagasaki. Beautiful train ride according to Eric. One of the best in Japan. bring to me. I can’t deny it. [Music]
Islandhopping from Nagasaki to Kagoshima and back via Kumamoto. We take you on a tour in rural Japan, including many ferry rides, beautiful coastal roads and active volcanoes.
